It is not a coincidence that the country with one of the largest populations of single, lonely, and unsocial people is also the country where everybody wears a mask. Face expressions are the key to any human communication. If you are spreading fear of other humans, of any contact, how will you make friends, fall in love,... be social? I have lived for many years in Asia, and there is a kind of fear of human contact that does not exist in Europe. We hug, we shake hands, and we even kiss to say hello (in Serbia it must be 3 times). As much as I prefer the Asian way (no kissing), it creates lonely and isolated people. "People are discussing and dirty, so let's wear musk, isolate ourselves as much as we can, don't talk to anyone, don't touch anyone, just live in front of a screen" - how any society can exist if their people think like this, if people are scared of each other?

I have been to China several times from 2006-2008 and there it is quite common to wear the masks too since there has been a lot of pollution especially in cities like Beijing. On certain days the air was really exhausting and a lot of people used facemasks to prevent the biggest dirt to enter their inner organs. In Europe especially in Germany face masks have been very uncommon before covid in the public crowed.
Yep, I wear a mask when I take a train. I generally don't wear one otherwise. Sometimes when I go to the grocery store and I'm not feeling well, I'll wear one too. I've noticed that in the city there are fewer people wearing masks than in the suburbs.
I'm an Australian living in the country area of Japan and out here the percentages aren't high as this. A lot of restaurant workers and staff don't wear masks anymore. And as for me, someone who never wore a mask his entire life before COVID, I do wear it from time to time for example parking and popping into a conbini for a snack. I fell the guilt of not wearing it. ultimately i wear it just cos it's only for a little bit. Thankfully I don't have to wear one for work anymore. I hated wearing that thing all day.
It’s perfectly fine to still wear masks. COVID is certainly not gone, I just caught it again recently here in US. Better to stay safe and protect others too.

I think it's spot on. I'm a Japanese person older than him, and I think 20-30% of people wore masks even before the pandemic, although there are other reasons besides the ones he mentioned.
Surprised by this explanation bc I figured it was the intense conformity of Japanese. Like being the one person without a mask makes one an outcast and feel shame as result.
In the US, especially in the college campuses, Asians are the only one group still wearing masks. First, they are very self-abasement; secondly, with mask is telling others that “I don’t want to talk to you”. I have raised this questions to many Chinese here, and not surprised the same thing happened in Japan. Nothing related with allergy and illness, or public transportation, they need to go to see a therapist.
They did say this... The Japanese live in fear, the Chinese are driven by ambition to become rich, the Koreans are prideful. I guess, that is why you have the Hikikomori in Japan. Young men who are afraid of rejection, and afraid of conforming with societal norms.

Anxiety is not a genetic problem, it's a cultural problem. People born outside of Japan who have Japanese genetics do not display the same level of anxiety.
The idea that such characteristics are genetic is mistaken. It’s social and perhaps historical but not genetic. Actually there is a dark history in Japan related to eugenic theories of the 1930s and 40s which attempts to suggest that ‘character’ is based on blood and thereby race. In the 60s some doctors in Japan even claimed that it was impossible for a non-Japanese to master the Japanese language as it was learnt in a different part of the brain from other languages. Of course this is wrong and was quickly proven thus by non-Japanese who learnt to speak the language fluently. I think face mask wearing is a social phenomenon.
People across the world wore masks during the Spanish influenza , including Americans. Some countries continued to do so when sick even afterwards, others did not, I wonder if because Japan is quite small in area, and the culture tends to be more group focused than the US tendency towards self-focus, Japan kept that habit while Americans lost the habit after a while of no sickness (this is not me saying one culture is better than the other, I think all cultures have good points and bad points, just pointing out the differences).
As a Japanese person who lives in a place where many people wear masks, I was surprised to see so many people overseas who stubbornly refuse to wear masks. It's a difference in thinking and customs.
Here in the US most people are not wearing face masks anywhere even in hospitals and doctor’s offices unless they are immune compromised and they choose to wear them. I am mostly speaking in one of the most democratic States, California. I am in the San Francisco Bay Area so we had been highly mask mandated.
As much as I understand the use of masks for certain cases, I find it a little over the top in Japan. I have seen people driving their cars, ALONE, windows closed and using mask. Why would anyone need to do that? Other cases I see is for example, someone walking near the river or in a park (any big open space) with mask. I feel that in some situations (if you go to a hospital and don't want to have the risk of getting contaminated by someone else) it's totally reasonable. But for other mundane things I think it's a little exaggerated. Yes, there is the pollen season allergies and so on, but most of the time I see many people who is using masks on their chins or under the nose, which completely defeats the whole purpose of it, so I find it a little stupid to be honest. The more I see this kind of people the more I start to think that they are doing it more to hide their faces than protect themselves.
There was a video with a Japanese girl who put the mask on. The interviewer asked her: "Why? You are not ill." She replied: "I don't want to put on my makeup today." So a mask is an easy way to avoid makeup for some Japanese women!!!
I would have to be paid then yes, painter, doctor, cleaner, solderer, or front desk receptionist with client interaction. Casually hanging out in a clean space with well washed clothes? pass.
Honestly, I miss the adoption of masks during lockdown. I understand that this sounds terrible, but it helped with anxiety since I didn't have to focus on my appearance nor seeing faces. Its not hygiene thing, I just hate being looked at or looking at people. Its no surprise.
There are still new COVID-19 variants in certain countries. So, it is better to wear face masks in crowded places (at one's discretion). Better be safe than sorry. The recent outbreak of flesh-eating bacteria, Streptococcus pyogenes, in Japan is quite worrying too.
I don't live in Japan and I still wear a mask whenever I go out, but not before Covid. Covid has taught us a good lesson in cross infection. Although getting Covid is not life threatening, getting the flu, the normal flu is still an unpleasant experience. Hence, I still wipe the supermarket trolley handles down and wipe all products before putting them away. This is not paranoia, but good hygiene practice learnt from Covid.
Everyone here is right in a way. It's true the virus is so small it can pass though a surgical mask fiber like a mosquito though a fence. What's wrong about that idea though is the virus doesn't travel though the air as just a virus particle but mainly on top of droplets which are much bigger and can be blocked by masks. If you don't wear any mask at all you'll get the full load of all particles bigger and smaller and get the full load. If you do wear a mask even if it doesn't block all the particles it'll block some and depending on the situation, that might mean the difference between getting enough viral load to get sick or not. It could be the difference between getting a mega dose and getting long COVID or getting a smaller amount and you having a mild case. Since no mask is fully protective you'll always get a little COVID in your system so your immune system gets to train itself on it but you might not actually feel sick. I make my daughter wear a mask at school nowadays but before COVID she always gets sick at least 4 or 5 times a year but after wearing a mask she only gets sick like once or twice. And one time it was because she sat right in front of another kid that was hacking up a lung. No mask can project you from that. I have no doubt masks help but to what extent depends on a lot of factors. I don't feel weird wearing a mask at all. It just got over politicized in the US. People should be free to do what's best for them.
I like that even pre pandemic, people wore masks during allergy season, for simple colds, or to skip makeup! Lol and other reasons. I wish it were seen as a simple safety and politeness tactic in the US. But instead, there are Americans who will bully or attack others for wearing a mask. I have an 8 month old son, and I've barely taken him outside of the home because I find I actually don't trust Americans as much as Japanese. I lived in Japan 6 years and my husband is trying to get a job in Japan so we can move back. I like the structure and politeness, personally.
Yes skipping makeup, shyness, and mask-fishing are the true reasons. What about other parts of USA? I'm sure there must be nice neighbourhoods in such a large country.
@@hannesRSA Maybe. Since having the baby I've moved apartments a few times trying to find a unit where neighbor's marijuana smoke doesn't come in through the vents, and it seems impossible, even though recreational marijuana is still currently illegal in the state I live in. Also, there has been an increase in shootings where I am due to relaxing gun laws in the past year or so. These are things I never had to worry about in Japan. I mean, school shootings are a thing here. I'm afraid to take my son to school when he gets old enough. Also, as a teacher, it's impossible to make enough to retire here. I still have a chance abroad. But thank you for asking! Anything I like about America also exists in Japan, for the most part.

During that whole insanity, I kept telling people In Japan, they wear them when they are sick, so they don't infect others. It doesn't protect YOU. it protects others, when you are sick already. Not complicated. They've been doing it for many years, because they always go to work, even when sick (like us lol). I do think it's unfortunate so many Japanese people kept going in to work instead of working remotely. I feel like that's why they had such a bad rate of infection. That, and perhaps already being a bit weaker to disease than people of other races whose ancestors mixed a lot more and lived through more plagues.
Based on the latest research and the quality of air nowadays, I think face masks are a simple way to protect yourself but mostly protect others. All the literature on viruses suggests people shouldn't be trying to get constantly reinfected. However, in the US and other places wearing a mask even in medical or work settings can cause bad outcomes for you.

I think it depends, like if you are immunocompromised or something. When I was undergoing chemo the last 6 months, I wore an n95 mask everywhere and it really worked well. I never got sick and people in my area open mouth cough on everything and everyone.
It’s also a bad thing, everything in life has its good and bad attributes. Nothing is solely good or bad so have you asked yourself what is the bad of wearing masks and does it outweigh the good? Or did you just see wearing the mask as a way to claim your moral superiorty over people who don’t?

I would have to be paid then yes, painter, doctor, cleaner, solderer, or front desk receptionist with client interaction. Casually hanging out in a clean space with well washed clothes? pass.
Honestly, I miss the adoption of masks during lockdown. I understand that this sounds terrible, but it helped with anxiety since I didn't have to focus on my appearance nor seeing faces.
Its not hygiene thing, I just hate being looked at or looking at people. Its no surprise.
This is Japan
@@askjapan9669 i know its different, i meant no offence. my apologies.
You're clinically insane and you need a psychiatrist
There are still new COVID-19 variants in certain countries. So, it is better to wear face masks in crowded places (at one's discretion). Better be safe than sorry.
The recent outbreak of flesh-eating bacteria, Streptococcus pyogenes, in Japan is quite worrying too.
Hi Japanese dude. I have a Honda Civic
And I have a Toyota
I also have an Honda Civic, 1997
Have you ever played Silent Hill?
guys, thank you for wearing your face mask
it's much easier to see idiots without even wasting time
Interesting
Babe, wake up. Askjapan has uploaded.
Askjapan back with another banger💥
I would be ok with wearing a face mask everytime I went out so that people didn't have to see my ugly face.
Can't wait for this friday night's midlife crisis depressing video! 🍻🍻🍻
See you soon, folks!
Haha
@@askjapan9669 see you soon, mofo 🍻

They live in FEAR, this is why.
I agree
Wow
japan don’t play about hygiene
I like watching videos about Japan, but i totally loathe those muzzles. Stresses me just look at it.
The problem is that a virus particle is so small that it can pass through the mask like a mosquito could pass through a chain link fence...
Surgical masks offer no protection. N95 offer minimal protection.
@@Chaggy1978 Better to have some protection than no protection. It is the droplets when people cough and talk that I want to avoid inhaling.
by doing that, you would lose your immune system a bit.
also it's gonna prevent to provide oxygen to your brain, so I don't think it's good habit.
孤独アピールBusiness😮
@@MyvPops818 Sounds like my old neighbor i lived next door to year's ago back in 2008 marijuana smoke lingering through the walls down the hall right into my apartment next door music turned all the way up at 3:00am in the morning cranked plus playing his video games literally the walls would be shaking all while i had to be up for work at 5:am every morning him on the other hand did not work but was laid off enjoying drawing his max unemployment every month God how awful i don't miss those days.
During that whole insanity, I kept telling people
In Japan, they wear them when they are sick, so they don't infect others.
Exactly. it's not a filter, it's a 'sneeze guard.' it stops your splatter from spreading, but it doesn't protect you from others'
I think japanese taking care of the world too much anyway its good but i want to say them don't be hard on yourself guys u all are good its 🆗.

I just farted out loud
Take that stupid face mask off. It's unnecessary.
I think it depends, like if you are immunocompromised or something. When I was undergoing chemo the last 6 months, I wore an n95 mask everywhere and it really worked well. I never got sick and people in my area open mouth cough on everything and everyone.
Wearing a mask😷 is an act of care of your neighbors 🤗
Some people even forget how to smile after wearing a mask for a long time.
In the US, spreading one's cold or illnesses is a sense of pride. Chalk it up to the lack of respect and empathy.
SHAMEFUR
japanese just want to cosplay being surgical doctors or dentists 24/7
Maybe true, maybe not
Wearing face masks is a very good thing and I wish Europeans would have stayed on the trend
nah its not
It’s also a bad thing, everything in life has its good and bad attributes. Nothing is solely good or bad so have you asked yourself what is the bad of wearing masks and does it outweigh the good? Or did you just see wearing the mask as a way to claim your moral superiorty over people who don’t?
@@tristonthomasmusic It makes you less sick by design. Idk what nosense ur mentioning. You think i like masks cuz im so much better than everyone XD
@@---ie2ms depends on the mask. Those ones the normies wear are not healthy and does nothing to stop viruses.
Outside of a surgical environment they are absolutely useless.
If you learn how to say masks correctly I'll learn Japanese.

That's fascinating, Kathleen. Thankess a lot for sharing
I thought.. I had hoped Japanese where smarter than wearing masks.
But it's not a matter of intellect, it's spiritual. We must rely on Jesus Christ for truths or else be swept away in Satan's deceptions
