Yeah, I agree. Plus I don't think a high school student would want to wear the calculator watch because of the possibility of being made fun of. Other than smart watches I have seen a lot of younger people wearing the gold Alarm/Chrono Casio watches, probably because they're sold at Zumiez.

When I was a student intern, my bosses loved discussing watches. I got intrigued, started reading up, and understandably got into watches. As I started my first job at 23yo I wanted a watch to commemorate graduating/starting work, and during a family trip to Japan I bought a Seiko SARB033 for less than 300usd. At that time I was proud to get a Japanese domestic model that I was eyeing at such an affordable price. It fit perfectly on me, works well, and looks good with different straps for various occasions. Seiko has since discontinued this model, so it is even more valuable to me now. It so happens that this watch has 23 jewels and every time i see '23 jewels' printed on the dial, it reminds me of the excitement of being 23yo, graduating and starting work. And as I bring the watch to my ears, the ticking still reminds me of the joy I had after buying this watch, as well as the memories of a wonderful family vacation. I have since gotten a couple more watches, but nothing beats the SARB033 in my heart! (maybe not until i get another 32 or 35 jewel watch to commemorate another life event few years later haha. ps: no. of jewels do not correlate to quality, but to me its a nice way to relate to an age)

As an American of Finn decent, I can assure you that the grade and school structure here is still somewhat open to suggestion. It really depends on where one lives and what one wants to do.
I can relate, though. When I watch my favorite Scandinavian guitar TH-camrs, I often don't really know anything other than I really enjoy how they play, and what they have to say about the music and gear.

Quartz, solar, and analog-digital combo: these are all my criteria for a watch I want to own. And that makes me an all-Casio guy since high school. Four Casio watches is all I need: a G-shock for daily beater, a Pro Trek when traveling, an Edifice for going out with friends, and an Oceanus when I have to dress up.
    G-Shock G-steel: around $400
    Pro Trek: around $500
    Edifice: around $350
    Oceanus OCW-S100 : around $500
The longevity of these four watches is amazing. I'm not a student anymore but these four watches have been with me since high school and I haven't bought anymore new watches since.

I think this is an important topic. A lot of decisions and time efficiency are required from students and a watch you like can be a token of the way you value Time (more than style!). For my high school senior year I got a beautiful Tissot V8 chronograph to the split second. I wore that watch almost everyday until today, that I'm finishing my masters degree. I'm now the guardian of my father's Omega Speedmaster 145-022-69 pre moon watch, as well as a smart watch I got as a graduation gift. I really feel naked without a watch in my wrist and I repeat, not for fashion style, but for lifestyle. Time costs lives...

I was a pretty big nerd in high school, all honors and AP classes, debate team, all that stuff-and even I knew wearing a calculator watch was like wearing a shirt that said “Bully me, I won’t fight back”. I wore a Seiko Kinetic in high school and then a Seiko Flightmaster quartz chrono in college. I loved watches, but I didn’t know a lot other than brand names. If I could go back and do it again, I think I would have gotten a Seiko SKX007 and worn that all through college. With college comes a lot of bumps, nudges, spills, and waking up in weird places and positions. Much like the Seiko 5 Sports you mentioned, the SKX was attractive, durable, and had good WR. Could easily survive a keg stand or pub golf tour and do it with a bit of a rugged panache. If I were to do it now, I’d probably go with a Hamilton Field or Seiko Turtle.

I'm a student (getting into uni in 2023), and my next watch is most probably going to be a Grand Seiko 9F GMT, preferably the SBGN003 or 005. I wanted the 011/13 but it had too much Zaratsu and I'd be uncomfortable beating the crap out of it, so that's that. I needed five qualities, which are:
    1) Easy to maintain
    2) A GMT to track multiple timezones with a "true GMT" movement
    3) At least 100m of WR (preferably a screw-down crown)
    4) Extreme versatility - enough polish to be dressy but I should still be able to beat it up and it should be fine.
    5) Under the radar (this being the most important characteristic for...let's just say obvious reasons)
Given that these were the circumstances, the SBGN003/005 were pretty much the only watches I could think of. I'll most probably go for the 005, because I have more than enough black dials in the collection. Plus, wearing a Grand Seiko, and that too a quartz one at that - it gets attention, sure, but it gets you the right kind of attention that only an enthusiast can give. By the time I do start residency, I should be able to at least have the 005 and the Sinn 104.

For medical students residents and fellows. Since hospitals run on military time Hamilton khaki field auto (or any watch with quick 24hr time reference) is great for quick time conversions. Especially useful for calculating drug trough levels and timing of lab values.

I got into watches towards the end of my college years and just like many, had no financial way to back any of my wishes at the time. I remember thinking that Breitling was the pinnacle of watchmaking lol. I was obsessed with busy dials and since Breitling was waaaayyy out of my budget, I was hoping to save enough money one day and get a Citizen World Chronograph. $300 seemed so much money at the time for a watch and I was reading reviews of the watch and people saying how they owned 2-3-4 citizens… they seemed as the biggest watch collectors ever and I thought how cool would it be if i ever owned 3-4 $300 watches… By the time i got enough money to start buying some entry level watches my taste changed with more research so I started buying mostly divers and field watches.
Finally this year, I downsized my collection to only 12 watches… looking to get a speedmaster this year

Sophomore in college, my daily wears are my amphibia 110750 and my komandirskie 811783. Though I tend to wear the latter one more. I love the slim manual winding komandirskies. Especially with the less kitschy 783 dial.
Though, I've slipped into the vintage watch rabbit hole. Got a funky 1970s chaika quartz and it's really cool. Also bought a bunch of tools to begin to service watches myself. Honestly with all the old broken watches out there I think I'd have a lot more fun than just chasing my next purchase. Could even sell them once I get good enough at servicing.

Most watch "pundits" only talk about high priced automatics, cool watches but out of reach for most of us.✌🏽

I remember, my first watch from highschool to college was a Seiko SNK809 on a frayed up fabric strap. Today I wear a Tudor BB58 to work years after college. Still have the Seiko but on a much better strap (which still looks very handsome! The straps really make the watch).

Love the vid, and I hope to get some of these later in life, but out of med school we get paid 30-50,000, usually 40,000 per year for 3-5 years after accumulating 200,000-300,000 in debt, so buying a luxury timepiece usually isn’t an option because majority of finances are lost to various insurances, car payments, mortgage/rent, loan payments, groceries, phone bill, Wi-Fi, etc

Thanks for the video! Really nice recommendations but when it comes to choosing a watch to use on daily basis, my go to has always been a G-Shock. I don’t know why these watch channels don’t recommend them, but in particular to this video, I think when it comes to durability and limited budget, G-Shock’s are beasts and really hard to beat.

Law school students: law is one of the professions where you are still expected to wear a suit and tie on a regular basis. Aim for a luxury swiss watch when you graduate law school. It will help you catch the eye of the senior partners or the judge you are clerking for.

    • @pistonburner6448

I say for lawyers you should wear a fake of as expensive a watch model as possible: show everyone that you can get away with crime in front of everyone's noses... 😅
