- The Miis are without a doubt one of Nintendo’s most iconic creations, but there was one game that featured these loveable avatars that took them to the absolute limits and created one of the most silly, creative, and charming games Nintendo has made in recent memory, Tomodachi Life. Tomodachi Life is one of my favorites from the 3DS and in this video I take a deep dive into the game and see what makes so great. This is a Tomodachi Life retrospective.

For me personally, Tomodachi Life is so entertaining because of the fact that you can basically put anyone you know, IRL or Fictional, in Mii form into the game and then just watch them get into a bunch of entertaining situations
Hopefully, a future Tomodachi Life has the makeup feature from the Switch version of Miitopia in it to really widen the creativity
I agree! It's most likely going to be made by the same company who made the Miitopia one, and if so... makeup could most definitely be added!
I was thinking hair color spray could be repurposed to add fades into Miis' hairs (like wigs in Miitopia) instead of changing the color altogether, since that's already a feature in the Switch Mii maker.
I think the switch might not have street pass and other features like it to have tomodachi life sequel so they may release it at the next generation console

It would be amazing, but the touch controls would be really hard to port onto the switch in docked mode.
Fun fact: the reason tomodachi collection never came out everywhere else is because the voice synthesizer couldn’t do other languages that well.
The initial Japanese release of Tomodachi Life apparently reuses the original DS voice synthesizer from the first game, which explains why it sounds far worse in quality compared to the international ones. It wasn't until Miitomo where the Japanese voice synthesizer got better.
I will never forget that time when I was playing Tomodachi Life in gym (we were allowed to play video games as long as we were standing) and Avril Lavigne cooked soft serve ice cream in a frying pan and gave it to me. My friends and I were dying 😂 Also, my aunt (not related by blood) and uncle fell in love and got married in game, which I thought was adorable.
Edit: No, my aunt is not related to my family by blood. My uncle is the one I'm related to by blood. What I meant is that they were married in real life and I thought it was adorable that they got married in game too. He passed away in 2015 before I played the game.

Also, here’s an idea that could make a modern Streetpass work: P H O N E S. Everyone has a phone, and an app that uses that would work incredibly, because I’m not taking my Switch to the Gym, Mall, or Movies. But I will take my phone! And everyone loves Nintendo, so many will have this app.

I think your idea is fantastic but, I don’t think a feature like this would be worth it to the detriment of battery life of the device. The only reason I say this for a more modern device to be doing more task anyway in the background that causes battery life to decrease adding more would be the last thing a user would want.
I think it’s a cool concept and I applaud you for thinking outside of the box ❤

I had the welcome demo for 2 years before the full game yet it still had enough content to satisfy me

I remember playing the heck out of Tomodachi Life when it came out, such a bizzare and funny experience. The dreams and concerts were my favourite parts of the game. I'm always hoping we get a port/sequel on Switch, would easily double dip!
If a Tomodachi game ever comes to the Switch, I think an interesting thing they would add would be preexisting family relationships/trees.
Sounds confusing but hear me out. You would first add your own Mii caricature through the Tomodachi Switch game.
Once you've created it, you'll unlock a feature that allows you to choose your Mii characters' family relationships, like who's whose parents or who's a sibling with whom.
I don't know whether this feature would boost or hinder the Tomodachi Switch game's quality, but it's an interesting idea nonetheless.
@Lunaradical Just another reason why preexisting family trees and relationships should be added into the next game, to prevent gross and weird scenarios like that.

I played this game religiously back in elementary school. I graduated last week. I am really hoping they announce a sequel for the switch in the upcoming direct.

Tomodachi Life is a game that inspired me and my art as well. Playing this everyday non stop just to see my Mii's interact and do things.
I once stopped playing this game for about 2 years ago ( the reason I stopped plaing it is because of lack of interest, stress, and the addition of Tabby ) , but came back playing the game due to how charming and well creative the game is. ( I added most of my OC's in my island. ) Hopefully they'll make Tomodachi Life for the Switch, that would be amazing. ( My island's name is Rendale )

Tomodachi Life is a really fun and interesting game, it deserves to return in a port or sequel, it had so much potential. It needs to return.
What makes the game great is that its basically like a tv show with your favorite characters that lasts forever and also is on crack.
Man I want this game on the switch so badly. I think it would be cool if they also added an 'enemy' relationship to the game. There is so much more that could be expanded on, and i'm going to keep hoping that it happens. I'm not going to get my hopes up for one, and if there is one I will be cautiously exited.
If they made a sequel with the new make-up features that were added to Miitopia I think it would sell very well.

Tomodachi Life felt like an entire shitpost, but that only makes it so much more lovable to me. I really hope someday, I don't care for WHAT console, either a remake or a sequel is made. I want to be able to decorate Miis SO much more in-depth as well as be able to give them a larger variety of foods/drinks, items, and outfits! I would buy a remake/sequel game IMMEDIATELY if it ever became a reality
My Brother had Tomidacti life and it was so fun to watch them life live. I remember a rap battle where Chris Columbus lost because he said “You drive a old car”
I also thought my Mii died when I fed them their all-time worst. I was so scared that I might've cried... lol. I was only 7 or so, though.
God is this game really 10 years old now? I remember being in 5th grade when I saw the trailer for this game. No joke I was so hyped and excited that I had dreams about playing this game before it came out. I asked all my family members to make miis of themselves for when I put them in my island. The game came out on the last day of school and all day it was all I could think about. My parents picked me up and we went straight to best buy who had to take it out of their backroom storage because it was so new.
Man I remember seeing the fact that computer AI voices could sing and having my mind absolutely blown. I thought it was insane that a computer voice could sing. All I had known back then was those classic mircosoft and speakonia computer voices so this was utterly mind blowing to a little kid.
And man I would change in and out a whole shit ton of fandom character miis depending on my hyperfixations. The last one I had before my 3DS broke being Steven Universe Miis. I had them for years and Peridot was the only other mii besides myself that was level 99 lmao.
I sadly grew out of playing games when I entered my teen years in favor of pursuing my creative passions like art and writing. (I now actually have an associate's of fine arts) But I do still play games on occasion, and I tend to play life sims like ACNH. But no joke, if Tomodachi Life got a sequel or hell even just a port, no joke, I would relive my childhood and play the fuck out of my switch for weeks on end.
I remember hearing a lot of people not liking Tomodachi Life when it came out and it made me super sad. I felt like I was alone. But seeing all the hype and fond memories and hope for a sequel on the switch makes the inner child in me so happy. I was like 10 or 11 when this game came out. Now I'm almost 20. I miss playing this so much, and I really hope I can get to play it again on the switch one day. I'd Honsetly make a shit ton of The Owl House Miis becauses it my current hyperfixation (and maybe Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel Miis too haha)
I think the biggest reason why I loved and connected to this game so much was how fucking weird it is. I love weird shit. Growing up neurodivergant in a world built for neurotypical people is hard as shit, and I was the weird kid that everyone hated and made fun of. Seeing a game like this that openly embraces weirdness, and people actually like it, defintely means a lot to someone like me.
In all seriousness I cant describe how much it means to me that so many people have fond memories of this game and want a sequel on the switch. I wish my child self got to see that. It warms my heart.

I think the only issue is that Tomodachi life had features with camera and voice things as well and I don’t think the switch allows that, but I honestly think people won’t be that worried about features like that as long as they stay on the same path.

One of the best parts of Tomodachi Life was that it knew when to take itself seriously. Like seriously, as hilarious as the game was, seeing Miis get depressed genuinely was heart breaking. Breakups and Divorce were actual mechanics with depressing music to accompany with it.
It could be hilarious or somewhat hard to take seriously if the breakup was between something hilarious (Godzilla and Queen Elizabeth) but could genuinely be heartbreaking (Personal ships)
Tomodachi Life is in my top 5 favourite games oat. I still play it to this day
I got this game when I was making my communion (along with my 2DS) and the amount of years I’ve spent playing and restarting this game. I feel like it will never lose its charm of shipping your Miis together and watching their lives on your personal island where you tend to their needs. Awesome game and I just wished that Nintendo would stop ignoring Miis and bring them back for a sequel.

I downloaded Tomodachi Collection, and got an english patch, it's essentially like Tomodachi Life but it can run on my R4 card, because I haven't modded my 3DS yet

Funnily enough, playing Tomodachi Life's EU version makes me realize that I actually really prefer the European localizations of Nintendo games over the North American ones despite being a Canadian.

We already had a miitopia port and also on the 3ds you literally use your islanders on tomodachi life as the characters so we should get the sequal and call it a day

Yeah the game is great, I played this game so much a few years ago, my mii's lvl was so high, I basically played through the game. Ai could significantly improve the game, by having unlimited unique dialogue etc.

The lack of what is essentially a "gay button" isn't really a big deal. If you change the gender of a mii to the opposite gender, relationship compatability is achieved. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's not like there's no way to achieve such a thing in the game.
I'd rather save the hassle and have the real deal for immersion and all that jazz. Not to mention just things like an ace/aro option for Miis instead of having to deny their romantic advances constantly for that reason, as well as a proper family tree/relationship system between Miis other than the players so that we don't run into incestuous relationships for good.

The fact that they promised that they’ll include Sam sex relationships in a new one if it’s ever made just cements the fact that they’ll never make a new one. I love Nintendo for what they are but I fully realize and accept that they are not perfect and I know what they will and won’t do. And that’s not one of the things they’ll do.

A Tomodachi Life sequel on Switch is my biggest dream ever, but I highly doubt it will happen given that the console is near its end and how Nintendo has treated Miis very poorly on it. Yes, Miitopia was Mii focused but that was a 3DS port, and all the other games that did had Miis like MK8DX and Smash Ultimate, used them as extra characters.
And do I even need to talk about Nintendo Switch Sports ? 😑

Despite not allowing same sex relationships, it never stopped you from giving miis clothing or facial features of "other genders" so I just gave them the outfits and made them look as such.
The biggest thing for me if there ever is a sequel or port, is that I SO WANT the makeup feature miitopia for switch added
