    omg thats actually very nice ship lol. im suck at making ships but my imagination is basicly fighting that sucky building of mine. i want to make good ones and i never thought of making external first and then go internal. because i was good at space engineers and now 1x1x1 blocks idea is actually very neat. thank you so much for putting alot of effort into this video to explain both visually and with words.

    This was the first ship modelling video I saw for Avorion, so despite playing for 230 hrs in game, I never attempted something like this...
    I gotta say, wow... When you're inside that giant hollow fuselage putting down structure supports, I doesn't even feel like you're playing Avorion anymore. Kinda reminds me of the inside scene of a Borg cube from Star Trek.
    Gotta try this sometime. Great video, very helpful!

    Fantastic video, it's nothing too long winded nor complicated. As someone who's enthusiastic with the game but has only just begun to make larger ships, this video has given me some insights on how I should go about it (my last build kept getting incredibly awkward gaps and misalignments as it neared completion).
    Some people might say that you delivered the information too quickly and briefly but for a good majority of people looking for a tutorial to build bigger ships, we're not familiar enough to get into more complex details- and given how long making ships can take, the prospect of watching several hours of building tutorials comes across as daunting.
    Cool beans.

    Ooh I've never seen this approach before! That explains how people can create those very smooth designs!
    I usually go with a modular design where I make a bunch of hull pieces that slot together. They're filled with scaffolds and have integrity field generators already installed. And I can easily build many different ships by putting them together in different ways.

      The key is blocking it out first. It takes time but if you get the basic shape right others can help you if you run into any problems smoothing it out.
      Some things to remember
      1 use 1by1 HULL blocks for basic block out
      2 after basic block out use 1 and 2 ARMORED corner blocks to smooth out.
      3 if you get misalignment peel back a few blocks and try again if the problem persists ask for help on discord.
      4 Once smoothed out and looking good delete the hull blocks of the basic block out then place IFG and fill the inside with framework.
      After that, it's all Deco and personal test GL :)

  • @YammoYammamoto

    I think the "smaller thrusters creating more power" was back in the day, when the thruster measured surface area in direction of intended action. This lead to players slicing the thrusters in thin layers.
    Today, it no longer matters - afaik. (At least I seem to get exactly the same numbers sliced or not)

    • @lordmaddog6003
      @lordmaddog6003  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know that use to be the case. In fact, it used to be surface area, not mass that mattered.
      However, some say that when thrusters get to large they start having less of an effect.
      some even go as far as to color their thrusters different colors so they don't combine.
      If they do start losing efficiency at larger sizes though I have never tested because they are talking about 1k+ giant ships and I don't build that large.

    I think surface area makes a difference for thrusters. Multiple blocks have more surface area than one block using the same volume. I would have to experiment but that sounds like what is going on. So don't always combine.

    • @lordmaddog6003
      @lordmaddog6003  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Though for builds such as mine block count is a real problem so sometimes it is worth combining just to get the count down.

    so this video basically gave me the foundations to how to build good looking ships in this game. the thing is i dont know how you made it have light in the inside. I am building my ship out of titanium (since i dont have any other material) and even with glowing blocks in the inside it is still dark. Any tips??

    • @lordmaddog6003
      @lordmaddog6003  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      9:17
      Integrity field generators are the light source in my Tut.
      You always place them first when doing internals makes things a million times easier :) Its is also why I use framework to fill out the inside then convert it later: it allows the light from the IFG through it.
      On a side note turning off shadows in the graphic settings can help a lot as well and if you are still having problems go into a single-player creative game and find a sector that is bright.
      Also just in case, you did not know you can easily change the material of your entire ship with a few clicks.

    Every time I try to build a ship larger than a VW Bug, i get "NOT ENOUGH PROCESSING POWER" nonsense. Everything I can find says adding "Functional Blocks" increases processing power but its BS, it just uses it up. I can find the stat for how much I have but I can't even find where it says how much is used up as I add components, it just runs out eventually and the ship gets no bigger.

    So I'm not super far into this video and I'm not watching as I can only listen and use voice to text controls on my phone but I wanted to add a note about one very valuable technique that I have and that is subtractive building...
    To clarify this method utilizes volumes created of minimum desired block sizes and essentially you just subtract or delete blocks from that volume to create the shape that you want this can be done by rotating the camera and using the selection tool to create lines and can be used with other lines to create more complex and subtle forms.
    Note that this can be done two dimensionally or three dimensionally by creating slices instead of full 3d volumes of blocks. Oftentimes it's very useful to just set up essentially an ex and a y in a z array that you can then subtract from to define the general intended layout. Once you do that it's not too complicated to connect those regions in a free-form way by just placing blocks in the grid where you would like them to be in stringing them together at which point of course you can go back and subtract from that as well leaving what is essentially the wire frame.
    After all that you can go through and fill volumes if you like or you can just complete a shell or you can smooth and finish surfaces and framework by adding in the other more complicated shapes to fill rather quickly if you utilize the match block buttons like shift all control or whatever it might...
    It's funny how easy it is to get sucked in to creating things in this game and very difficult or inefficient ways only to take a step back and see that you could have done it in a completely different way and saved a lot of effort and had equivalent or better results. Realistically the most important thing is suggest no what the type of blocks required to be efficient such as thrusters need to be towards the outside and things like gyros need to be near the center and to account for things like field integrity block placement and what that can do for you if you compartmentalize regions so that you can have a certain amount of ablation should you so desire... It really is pretty cool what some of the systems in this game can allow for it.
    Anyway thanks and I'll probably have more to ramble on about later LOL if anybody learned anything from this long-winded comment please just say hi and tell me what it was as I'm curious about how people build in this game and what they already know or whatever blah blah blah XD

    • @seanwarren9357
      @seanwarren9357 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah bears mentioning the significance of the utility of block placement when setting down to design your ship...
      If you align placement to the voxel grid and you always have a consistent block size then you should have very few alignment issues utilizing the method that I spoke of in the previous comment. That said all of the placement methods have their own merit and utility and definitely deserve to be played with a little bit.

    I’m looking for a guide on clipping and stacking blocks with no luck.. any tips?

    • @lordmaddog6003
      @lordmaddog6003  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly most clipping has been removed from the game :(
      It makes building hard some times.
      As for stacking that is not possible in-game at all unless you have legacy stacked blocks save in your blueprints already or DL one from the workshop
      here is one steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1813467204&searchtext=stack
      That all said you can open the ship .xml outside of the game with a text editor and manually change the numbers but that is not an easy endeavor. It can take hours to find the block you are looking for and even longer to move it into the place you want.
      While you can find the block you are looking for a little easier if you color it and you know the color code number for that color it is still a hard task.
