I've always had a different take on the final scene. Rather than everything seen on the show being in the mind of Tommy Westphall, I believe that Tommy actually created the final scene in his mind. Watch the final scene. Dr. Westphall and Tommy are in Dr. Auschlander's office.. As Dr. Westphall is sitting in the chair and mourning the loss of his close friend, Tommy is looking out the window at the snow. He then glances back at his dad and sees his sadness and grief. So, he decides to create his own reality in which his dad can be happy again. So, St. Eligius and all it's problems (all the problems that have caused his dad sadness over the years) are now locked away in a snow globe where they can no longer cause his dad sadness. He then brings back Dr. Auschlander as his grandpa, because he was such a father figure to his dad; also neither one is a doctor so no more life and death situations / decisions So in his mind,. Tommy has created a happy ending for his dad and Dr. Auschlander.
Imagine creating a tv finale that so breaks the audiences suspicion of disbelief that it causes other shows that crossed over to also suffer from suspicion of disbelief with out the creators of those shows doing anything to warrant it.
The best part is...that this continue until today, like DC and Marvel are part of this Univers, so all their films and series are, things like Netflix's Sandman or the literally new released Dead boy Detectives (released like...6 days ago?) are part of that Universe alongside all the MCU, all Disney + shows (Girl meets world been a sequel to Boy meets world) etc etc, it is impossible to escape from it
The other creators of those shows do not have to accept it. And St. Elsewhere producers said it can be looked at as the snow globe scene is a fantasy in his head. Most likely to alleviate the sadness he feels but can't express.. his father's loss.
@@66zebulon There’s diagrams of the Westphall universe showing it. St Elsewhere crossed over with Cheers which spun off into Frasier which crossed over to Caroline in the City which crossed over to Friends. There’s literally like 600 shows in the Westphall universe
Best finales ever: Newhart and The Wonder Years. Funny how Newhart is a dream from the Bob Newhart Show. A dream within a dream of characters that exist in Tommy’s mind. Great video!
If over 500 shows are not only in the same universe as each other but are also all set in the mind of a quiet 12 year old autistic boy than what the hell would the real world universe be like?
In St Elsewhere's finale there is a scene with a group hug. Dr.Fiscus suggests "Should we sing It's a Long Road to Tipperary?" And they all laugh/cry, breaking the tension of the goodbye. "It's a Long Road to Tipperary " was famously sung on the Mary Tyler Moore show's finale as the group hugged goodbye and scooted toward the exit together. So....they were having fun with us,indeed.
Recently, I decided to revisit St. Elsewhere. It was a terrific show in its day and was the precursor to the even grittier ER. I hopped around a bit, but it still took time to watch my own edited version of the series. After finishing, I found myself less irritated by the final scene than I once had. I'm not sure I liked it, but I do appreciate the showrunners attempting something original and unexpected. Curiosity got the better of me, and I figured I'd see if anyone in 2024 had any thoughts...positive or negative...regarding the infamous snow globe. Well...WOW! I had no idea this even existed until what, an hour ago? It may not make the finale better, but it sure as hell makes it more memorable and fun to talk about. Still, if this is all Tommy Westphall's doing... Damn kid! Your mind is incredible!! But why did you have to kill Tara? Just when Willow found herself and true happiness.
There's one thing that's being forgotten. I haven't seen the grid of shows, but John Munch and probably a lot more characters have showed up in Family Guy as cartoon versions of themselves, but what brings this into the real world is the fact that there's been real life clips shown in Family Guy. This expands the universe beyond shows and might suggest that everything that's ever existed is part of Tommy's mind. Also, you have a great video. Thank you for the history and explanation.
Hi, NvG Nick! I have to say that I'm very impressed with your theory on the Tommy Westphall Universe. You've done a great job explaining how this universe came to be, and how St. Elsewhere is connected to all these other great TV shows. I hope you continue to create more videos like this about TV & Movies in the near future, and I hope you get this message. Have a good day!
That's pretty cool. I've had dreams that were like tv shows after dream Journaling I noticed the same phenomina. It's weird how they interacted over over the past ten years
Fantastic! St. Elsewhere is one of my favorite shows, and I have never seen anyone go so in depth! One little thing though... It is Grant TINKER, not TINKLER. He is a very well known person and saying his name wrong all through the video is cringey.
I think the ending was brilliant People ( the audience) invested years watching the show , for it all to be a kids day dream made people feel like they been taken for a ride The series lost also ended the same way with everyone dying in the plane crash
St. Elsewhere also crossed over with The Bob Newhart Show when Mr. Carlin was featured, portraying his same mentally troubled character. (St. Elsewhere, "Close Encounters" episode)
My only problem with this is your addendum that Mary Tyler More connects the fictional dream universe to our universe. I would argue the Mary T Moore on Ellen is a fictional Mary T Moore and not the real person, even when the character was played by the real person.
To me it a bit of a stretch to include the actors in the theory but the characters showing up in other projects like dick van dyke first playing dr mark Sloan on an episode of Jake and the fat man before the character becoming apart of diagnoses murder for 8 seasons linking the two shows together through mark Sloan not something like ncis linking with st elsewhere cause mark Harmon isn’t playing dr Robert Caldwell making the shows unrelated unlike cheers and homicide life on the street cause actual characters appeared on those shows it makes it easier to understand and not feel like a big stretch for probably a good chunk of the shows in the diagram
Way too much overthinking going on about the ending. It was a brilliant ending. Period. Remember the show fondly and move on. And it’s Tinker, not Tinkler. And it’s Bochco, not Brocko. I’m outta here.
LOL. It wasn’t necessarily brilliant. I read a retrospective article with the producers. The ending was a massive piss off from them due to the show being canceled unexpectedly. So they decided on a totally off the wall ending. So I don’t know about this “exhaustive explanation.”
Well most movies and TV shows that are fiction are spin-offs of St Elsewhere. The ones that aren’t are films based off true stories so movies like Ford V Ferrari or Green Book wouldn’t be in the Westphall universe.

Yep. Even Friends is a spin-off of St Elsewhere. Quite a fact that most don’t know.

No. You need an actual life.
Could we all right now be figments of Tommy Westphall's elaborate imagination?
Who knows?
We’re all living in his head
(Cue Men In Black ending where the camera zooms out into all the different multiverses in a bag)

I’m surprised Deadpool hasn’t met Tommy Westphall yet.
Just make one crazy series called Westphall. You could literally put any one from cheers to Star Trek in it and it would be fine.
I would make it an anthology series similar to Amazing Stories.
It's Grant Tinker, not "Tinkler." BOCH-CO, not "Brocco."
My memory is pretty fuzzy on whether it was the final episode but News Radio ended one episode with an homage to the snow globe scene.
Also- I would love to see a video on Mary Tyler Moores impact on Minneapolis MN and scene locations. It’s my home town.

the guy that writes a lot of black dc comics characters wrote a lot of st elsewhere so it makes sense that this ended up happening

There is no “L” in Grant Tinker’s name.
