    UCL Finlay here following in the tradition of other contestants posting here (thanks Mr Pumpkin having these episodes on TH-cam is such help for revising to prepare for the show and getting it out to friends not in the UK) - well I think the only more stressful experience in my life than watching that back was playing it the first time. Still not quite sure how we did that - trinity were mighty opponents whose performance in previous rounds had reached us before we even played this round, not to mention incredibly gracious and friendly ever since. Not sure how I pulled some of those out of my brain before my name was called (as you can see most of my memory of to pimp a butterfly is pretty rubbish) and found myself playing along getting more of trinity’s bonuses than our own. (I’m very pleased with the confidence I guessed the dalloway principle with when I was only thinking of time in the Virginia Woolf novel) hope you’ll be watching the remaining rounds and thanks for all your support :)

      Exhilarating match, my heart sank at Taoiseach but you rallied brilliantly with back to back starters that sealed it. You had to take some risks with swift answers to pull ahead! Really hoping to see a UCL - Imperial showdown!

      Hell of a performance all round, though. Honestly I thought you guys were toast and a minute later it was tied, then the race to the finish... Very well done.

    Hello everyone, it’s UCL Hall here adding to Finlay’s comment - what a match!!! I really hope you enjoyed it, this is the one I’ve been most excited to watch so far as I’m sure you can see why. We knew this match would be very challenging going into it, but I think when we found ourselves 100 points behind it was going a lot worse than even we had anticipated it might. Thankfully, the UCL spirit kept us going and some aggressive and perhaps slightly risky buzzing paid off and gave us that edge over Trinity in the end. I am very glad I got that osprey question, as it is a running joke in the team about my weirdly niche British bird knowledge - I could feel the team looking over at me and knew I had to pull something out the bag. This match was ridiculously stressful, I knew something big was happening when I felt my heart beat at the same speed as one of the fast music questions! It was incredible fun though, as every match with my incredible teammates Ali, Tayana, and Jacob was, and the team from Trinity were incredible opponents and all-round lovely people. Keep tuned to see who we play in the semi-finals and what happens…
    Edit: I’ve seen a few people here and on Reddit say this sounds like me spoiling our semi-final match. I promise there is genuinely nothing to infer from what I say about whether we win or lose it, I’m just happy to have another match to enjoy playing and watching no matter what happens! Hope you enjoy when it comes around - I know I will, regardless of whether we win or lose. All the best!

    This was another very exciting and close match. It was definitely unfortunate to end up losing after such a strong start, but that comeback from UCL is greater than any other I've ever seen, and at least we still have another chance. It was close enough that a single question going differently (and there were some close buzzer races) could have changed the outcome of the match, although that's also true of a lot of our matches. UCL were definitely a very nice team, though, so congratulations to them!

      You still did unbelievably well! I am so impressed with you and your incredibly likeable team. When a team starts to come from behind like UCL did, having nothing to lose, they tend to be impossible to stop. Just like the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 ACLS series against the New York Yankees. I

    25:00 kudos to UCL here for quickly passing or giving their immediate best attempt answers, instead of taking their time, despite the fact that they had the (narrow) lead and delaying would be to their advantage. The kind of sportspersonship all teams should aspire for.

    Uhhh you mean we tactically lost so that we could maximise our TV appearances, right...?? 🥲
    In all seriousness, huge congratulations to UCL. They were incredibly fast on their buzzer which paid off in the end when they pipped us to a few starters. The UCL team are all such lovely people and glad to have been part of yet another nail-biting UC match (becoming a bit of a pattern with us😅) with them.

I _really_ liked how you and your fellow teammates were fully engaged with each other, attributable, I’m sure in large part, to your terrific captaining. Perhaps it’s unsporting to say so but Trinity - Cambridge is one of my favorite teams this series. (Imperial is the other.)

      Jaksina looked so unhappy at the end (27:35 to 27:37). Just pure stone-faced misery. I suppose I'd be upset too if I got as many right as he did but my team still gave up a 105 point lead.

    What a comeback. It looked like Trinity were gonna run away but that answer by Izzatdust to get them to 0 from -10 just woke them up and you could see Trinity were getting more and more nervous as time went on and Kang was probably just beaten to the buzzer by Finlay on a couple occasions. This was probably the best match of the tournament since Manchester's win over Trinity.

    Absolutely astonishing comeback victory from UCL. Such a well-rounded team. I loved their tendency to avoid time wasting, even with a slender lead so late on. What a match! And what a comeback from UCL. Behind by more than 100 points with not even Zero as their starting point when they got their first starter correct. It was lovely to see Hall and Finlay getting negatives yet being the MVPs, especially Hall. Not to forget they had so many negatives, more than Trinity, yet didn't back down. Also special mention to Jaksina, who carried this round.

    I think my heartbeat fluctuated too much during that game ;). Really thought UCL had blown it at one stage on -10 with just under half the time used up. But despite that and FIVE penalties, like Lazarus, they rose from the dead with a good 18/30 bonus to semi-compensate :). That's the second time Trinity has completely squandered a big lead - their chances are still good in the repechage but not sure they'll win it all now - maybe the first all-London final since 1996? We'll just have to see.

    One gripe I have against Trinity is the signalling during a starter to decide who will answer it. It is unfair and against the spirit of the game, when the rules clearly say "you may not confer". Other teams have done it too, so I guess the fault lies with the producers for not enforcing their policies or communicating properly to the teams. Now that that is off my chest, thank you, UCL, Trinity and Cosmic Pumpkin for that nailbiter.

    • @sunway1374
      @sunway1374 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      "Conferring" is discussing the answer. Signalling who answers starter question is not conferring. Also, it would be difficult to monitor fairly, teams will work out secret signals to use.

    • @zaphbrox8239
      @zaphbrox8239 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@sunway1374 classic letter of the law vs spirit of the law dilemma. The spirit should always supercede the letter. Sure, teams could come up with clever ways to signal, but if it is clearly stated that any form of communication is prohibited during starters, that should cover it, and I'd say most people would adhere to it. As I stated in my earlier comment, I'm not faulting Trinity here. Its probably something the producers should address to maintain the spirit of the game.

    • @sunway1374
      @sunway1374 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @zaphbrox8239 i am not sure your interpretation of the spirit of the rule is accurate. It could be only your opinion or preference.
      I have watched UC for 30 years. Signalling does happen although usually more subtle. It's never an issue.

    • @gooscarguitar
      @gooscarguitar 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think non-verbal signals are fine, especially when it's as simple as "don't buzz yet". You can't discuss the question just with hand gestures.

    • @whateverkatana
      @whateverkatana 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@zaphbrox8239 Going to have to agree with the other commenters there: if the spirit of the law was to prevent any and all _communication_, then the law would state exactly that. Conferring relates to discussing the answer itself, not who is going to answer, and I also don't see how this would be unsportsmanlike or hurt the spirit of the game.

      @arkdeniz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It does seem a bit like collaboration, for sure.

    • @late8641
      @late8641 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since they're not pondering and working out the answer together, I don't think it's strictly conferring. It's a simple gesture of "don't buzz, I know the answer."

    • @raphaeleyald
      @raphaeleyald 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      It should be done. After all, University Challenge is based upon the U.S. television show G.E. College Bowl, which aired from 1959 to 1970. At about the same time, there was a U.S. television show which featured college debating teams. A debating team came here from Oxford to face the U.S. champion. All I remember was that the Oxford team didn’t take the match seriously. They were more interested in clever remarks than logic.
      But, yes, I wish there would be competition between U.S. and U.K. teams - that would be great television.

    9'40": "mise en abyme" is an expression (locution in French) but definitely NOT a hyphenated term. If it was written with hyphens it would actually be called a word (like chef-d'œuvre, arc-en-ciel or pot-pourri which are "mots composés"). Always disappointing and a bit worrying to catch the researchers that prepare the questions at fault, and this one was especially easy to check and avoid. Hope they are more accurate in the fields I don't know about... Otherwise an epic match, congrats to both teams!

      Looks like the captain is just signalling to the other two that Jaksina has got the answer. It's not like they're conferring. The rule says the starters are individual efforts, which it still was. I guess any team could have agreed on hand signals ahead of the game to indicate who should and shouldn't buzz.

      Good call. Kang just seemed to be telling the other team members to let Jaksina answer. But as far as I can judge no information passed to or from Jaksina himself before he did answer. Still, no conferring should mean no conferring whoever does it and whatever it's about.

    • @kevindennehy7105

      It's not considered to be consulting. There was a debate on this some years ago after a similar incident. Kang did it earlier in the game, he held his hand up when the question continued after an incorrect interruption by UCL. As long as nothing is said to indicate the answer it's deemed OK. It's just clever answer management.

      So if being from "that part part of Europe" means that you automatically get everything right that has to do with it, why don't get people from the other part of Europe get everything right that has to do with that part? Moreover, since when are Jaksina's answers of Franz Hals, Buenaventura Durutti, Sacco & Vanzetti, Surrealism, President of Ireland, and Indus River connected to Eastern Europe? There were only two answers that he gave that were linked to Eastern Europe, namely Bulgaria and Bakunin. And you don't learn about those facts in high school in Poland. Jaksina also got a whole bunch right that had nothing to do with Eastern Europe!. Moreover, there were only two that were connected to Eastern Europe. And prove to me that those qustions are generally considered asy! As for what you remember, nobody gives a toss. There were several over the last few years.
