The winning team was just more knowledgeable about the questions asked, and quicker on the buzzer as well. The losing team was a wonderful group, and I'm sad to see them go. But it is a competition after all, and the better team most definitely won. My best to both teams, and to each individual.

They’d try to figure out the answers and were very often wrong, sort of like that kid who thinks he’s the smartest one in the class but isn’t. (In contrast, a team like Birkbeck - London was really good at coming up with the answers.)

you know what ? that first collective question about the Matter of France ? i had never heard of it !! i did learn something about my country history, through a British tv programme.
Christ Church’s Arthur Wotten did fantastically well this match-his answer regarding the “early astronomical device” on the flag of Portugal 22:57 really surprised me as I had no idea about what the flag of Portugal even looked like (and, if I had, it wouldn’t have occurred to me that that “device” even _had_ a name!). He was ably assisted by teammates Eliza Dean and Melika Gorgianeh (with Elliot Lowe chiming in). Amol Rajan, somewhat untypically, refers to Gorgianeh’s area of expertise-“If only you had an astrophysicist on your team” 9:12-which she takes in good stride. She _does_ name the possible answers to all the questions but guesses wrong on one of them, the kind of thing that haunts one. The Christ Church team gives the impression of actually _knowing_ the answers-Wotten just nails them-in contrast to Open University, who seem to be trying to deduce the answers-which _can_ work, just not as well-a lot of the time. In these final matches, the questions _do_ seem a lot harder-I myself got only eight correct this match but at least one answer, regarding “primordial soup” 4:46, was one that _none_ of the contestants knew, which counts as some sort of consolation.
These folks are so knowledgeable that when they don't know something, it sometimes comes as a shock. "Black Swan" in the sense Taleb defines it has become a basic part of vocabulary in some circles, it really took me by surprise when they didn't know that one.

Maybe I was just lucky but I was surprised how many answers I got today including a few which eluded them. Usually at this stage of the competition most of them fly by me, unanswered.
There's been a recent twitter attack on Gorgianeh and I just want to reach out and say I've been so pleased to see her come into her stride in this challenge. She possesses everything the UK should be proud of as a doctoral student competitor. And great job to all, for this episode and the whole series!

There is a mistake in the question about quaternions. Amol said that the symbols i, j and k were the unit vectors in the x, y and z directions. They are in fact three orthogonal square roots of minus 1,such that :- i squared = j squared = k squared = ijk = -1 When i, j and k are used as unit vectors in 3-space they are written as î, ĵ and k̂ and are called i-hat, j-hat and k-hat. Bamber would never had allowed such an error to get through.
Wotton did well to hold his team together given two of the contestants look like some of the most nervous people one has ever seen on University Challenge
Poor Amol had to sit there and listen to them butcher the pronunciation of Malayalam 😄 (Based on his name, Amol is most likely of Malayali ancestry himself.) To be fair, the fault is with the anti-phonetic nature of English spelling and the way the transliteration "Malayalam" really gives you no clue about the vowel lengths.
There's also a (proud?) British tradition of blithely mispronouncing even well known foreign placenames. One example I'll always remember was an announcer on the BBC World Service pronouncing PITTSBURGH to rhyme with EDINBURGH.
Lot of sitters missed in this episode. For eg: JBS Haldane and moment. Also, it is quite unpardonable by UC standards to miss Periodic Table questions.

Wotton absolutely broke the back of that quiz - think he almost singlehandedly dragged Christ Church from 55-55 to 135-55 or something.
Mr.Davidson & Mr.Wotton have got 9 correct starters in a previous stage. But in this episode the questions didn't have so good comparison for OPEN.
