Loved every bit of this match. A true thriller! The way York took an early lead, fell behind and made a comeback only to be differentiated by a tie-break is a story to remember. Bachelor and Miss Smith were amazing. McMillan from Birbeck already showed himself in the first round so it was no surprise when he clutched the tie break. Also loved the fast discussions from both teams even when they were leading. True sportsmanship even after the tie where both of them congratulated each other.
For classic university challenge you have to go back to the '60s and the legendary Bamber Gascoigne (if you can find any still available!) The semi-famous British celebrity Stephen Fry appeared on it once decades ago... I'm pretty sure you'll find that one. The anarchistic British sitcom called the Young Ones did a brilliant piss-take of it back in the eighties... You got a lot of catching up to do!!!
Wow! A thrilling ride from start to nail-biting finish! It was truly delightful to watch McMillan and Mariner's arm positions in the maths answer for "complex conjugates". This was the best match of the season so far and I can't wait to see the winners again in the quarter finals. Bravo to both teams for a stunning and enjoyable match. As always, thank you CP!

Damn - guess you can be a blessing and a curse in Mr McMillan's case 😯. All three of Birkbeck's interruptions were from him, but he did solve the TB and get the bulk of their starters again, so guess that makes up for it? That was rather devious of Rajan 😅with such a long pause for the last question as well. Also weirdly both teams seemed to swap performances - York far better on bonuses this time 16/24 vs a much poorer 14/30 for Birkbeck - oh well - let's see what happens in the next round 😊.

I loved the synchronised hand movements from Mariner and McMillan when working out the Argand diagram question [6:00 onwards], but Mariner is the maths student, so how come McMillan [the doctoral student in Irish history] also has the moves?
Considering his success at anticipating answers, at least that's how it seemed to me, what were the odds for Mr McMillan at the end? Especially with that little pause after his answer.

I found this match a bit slow-paced at first, but York's stellar comeback and the nail-biter finish more than made up for that. Bonus: a rare chance to catch Amol Rajan in a mistake ("Nouveau Roman" means "New Novel," not "New Roman"). I also don't see Birkbeck carrying off the trophy, but would love to be proved wrong!
Amazing game! Though does anybody else find it slightly unfair that the pace of question-reading always speeds up near the end, favoring any late-breaking comebacks?
I think the question said these languages have official status of India, not that the languages DON'T have the status in India. Bengali of course is a very prominent language in India
Sure, but it was a good gamble. Already from the premise of the question the eye is the most likely answer, you would need to look for very specific works for any of the other four. I probably would have buzzed at that point too. It was also a lucky coincidence, as this particular regeneration trilogy happens to be on WWI :)
