  • Big Jim has seen it. He's even featured in it. Chasing the Sun 2 - it's the epic story of the Springboks journey to Back 2 Back Rugby World Cups BUT is it any good?
    Jim reviews episode 2 of Chasing the Sun 2 including Rassies interesting approach to coaching, South Africa's response to Ireland defeat and the story of Bongi Mbonambi.

    I’m gonna be honest, as an irishman, even though we didn’t obviously win the team who I did want to win after us was SA…. I love how the players constantly speak about playing for South Africa!!! It was amazing to see how they constant talk about loving their country and playing for their country, and sia kolsisi is an absolute legend! Looking forward to watching this!!! Congrats again boks well played.

      Likewise. The IRE vs NZ semi was an anomaly. Like the French sides of the past they can produce "that" game, but I'd be surprised if Ireland and SA don't start putting 20 points over NZ on a regular basis, because we're clearly learning from one another.
      The ABs are masters at killing the game in their 25 with deliberate fouls. That leads teams into becoming despondent and believing they are invincible, but SA and IRE are beginning to dispel that myth. The elimination of Bongi in the final is a classic example of that type of play, with multiple players committing deliberate fouls.
      Remember, for the 75 years prior to '95 the Springboks dominated the ABs. Once that memory begins creeping back into their headspace it's going to be a different playing field entirely.

    Great review Jim thanks..I’m a dual SA/UK citizen who lived in the UK for 18 years day dreaming about returning to Africa every single day..Covid cost me my job there so I drove my Toyota Hilux Invincible for 8 months back from London to Cape Town overland on my own. I miss the £ I’m not going to lie but South Africa is such an amazing country I’d rather struggle financially than live comfortably abroad and feel that constant yearning to this rugby mad country with its unique set of challenges..once Africa is in your blood it’s in your blood!

    • @blaquenguni9249
      @blaquenguni9249 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There was nothing magical about Brannas hooker roles in the final, our line out was so bad we pretty much gave up on it and we zero parity in the scrums.
      What he did was tackles and carry like a warrior. But a large part of our tactics went right out the window the moment Bongi got injured. That's not magical, we were lucky.. the youngest Barret missing a kick he's nailed many a times was part of that luck

    • @GBH001
      @GBH001 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In truth your lineout disintegrated and your scrum wasn’t great against an Ab pack with a back on the side. You got through it tbf but that was mainly due to factors outside of your control

    • @71bootneck
      @71bootneck หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It’s great reply when kiwi mates give you kak about them getting red carded. Or in general. Marx was our best player going into WC. How ouke Ireland without sexton , France without DuPont , NZ without Savea gone ?

    • @GBH001
      @GBH001 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@71bootneck In hindsight, I am sure Ireland would have rather left Sexton out of the squad. He was a passenger in the qtr final loss against NZ.
      Fair enough on Marx, tbf SA did have a few major injury problems. I’m sure you have an actual 3rd hooker in SA who can throw the ball in and scrum properly though 😉

    Jim your love for the game and your levelheadedness are a credit to you! People from outside of SA have no idea how great Rassie actually has to be as a person in order to be able to pull off what he has, and to continue to do what he's doing in SA rugby. By going to the Apartheid museum you have got a taste of it, and I think you'll appreciate him more and more over time as you learn more about South Africa. Rassie's stature is so far beyond his greatness as a rugby coach, which on its own is astounding. To be able to resist pressure from all sides on all fronts, be they political, intracultural or whatever, and stay the course on the high road he took, requires something we can barely fathom. There is a marvellous poem by Rudyard Kipling called "If". Rassie is just about as close as one can get to embodying and living that poem. He'll be remembered, and studied, in South Africa for generations. And the best part of it all is revealed in that little clip from the celebrations after the RWC '23 medal ceremony - Jacques Nienaber quietly walking over to Rassie, the two of them hidden behind the celebrating Boks and letting all and sundry take the glory. Humility. God bless that man!

    Bongi’s as a kid left the black side of his small town where all the kids were playing soccer to the white side to join the kids playing rugby. I watched an interview with his mother and she was so happy that the white kids befriended him and they just had fun together. A conservative and tough part of South Africa one cannot take these things for granted.
    Thank you Jim for your interest in SA rugby. Ya when Marx got injured I thought that was the end of our World Cup dreams.

    Contrast the Six Nations documentary to Chasing the Sun 2, the Netflix documentary was good. But when you watch the words of Rassie speaking to his players versus Gregor Townsend, chalk and cheese. Especially at the end of episode 2 after losing to Ireland, they way that Rassie spoke to the team, he brought them down to a level where they needed to want not to be there again. I tell you what, I cant wait for the Irish tour in July...

    Irishman here. The rugby media in Ireland with the exceptions of lads who have actually played the game at the highest levels like Luke Fitzgerald, Alan Quinlan, Brian O'Driscoll, Bernard Jackman and Stephen Ferris are an absolute and utter disgrace. Off the Ball radio show both AM and PM (with Quinlan and O'Driscoll the exceptions) are utterly clueless and their daft views serve only to pump-up and motivate Irelands opposition. Well done on Rassie for calling out Off the Ball!!

    Thanks for this Jim. Great to hear the 'outside' perspective.
    Chasing the Sun 1 was the best documentary I've ever seen. They HAVE to get these on Netflix for the US market to see.
    Highlights for me from Ep2
    1. Malherbe saying "they have some big guys too you know". He says it like any 60 yr old Afrikaans farmer and I wish I could translate it culturally for the Irish to understand that it's the biggest compliment you can get from a guy like that.
    2. Rassie going for the jugular in the Monday morning was hard to watch. Imagine the amount of player respect you need to have built up to go after the captain and after the songs (remember Bongi). I'm still not sure if he was really pissed off or if it was his plan to get them ready for France (and maybe get the focus off Manie).
    3. PSDT being such an incredible introvert. He doesn't even say much in Afrikaans. Good luck with that interview ;)

    What really struck me from the episode is just how angry Rassie was after the Ireland loss. I think he didn’t like the way the Boks lost. This, even though he previously said that it wasn’t a must win game.

    Many Fans (me included) and Commentators mentioned the words that Marx is the 1 irreplaceable player in the Bok squad; but how the dealt with that setback and Bongi's injury to follow was flipping amazing. Pollards call up was the best off-set to the loss of Marx.

    As rugby lovers we respect people like you, you played hard but after the game all was forgiven and the (rugby) fraternity is stronger for that. As a pundit you clearly love rugby and the respect you show us (RSA) and your objectivity makes for great viewing. You will always be welcome in my house, Big Jim.

    I love your input your knowledge of the game and just you as a person and you trying to understand we as a country with all our different cultures, where we came from and what the World Cup means to our people. What Rassie has achieved to abolish the word quota which was like a swear word in all our sports, but Rassie turned this all around went to shop wide and far in our country to bring the best possible players black, white, brown, and even Indian into our Springbok team and now that evil word does not exist in our sport anymore, thank you Rassie and SARU❤🙏. Jim thank you for your kind words, I have three guys I follow yourself, Wildcard, and Eggchancers love you guys you three are real rugby lovers, no bullshit, woke, correctness because of main stream media. Thank you Big Jim love you man.

    Thank you, I cry during every episode. I really don't think the rest of the rugby world gets it, but thank you for trying to learn more of our country. Weekends when it is provincial rugby, us SAFFAS are in a war with one another, but oh boy, when our boys play in green and gold, this country unites like you cannot believe!!!

    i think the thing that stands out about rassie as a coach is the way he treats the players. He can hype them up, but also show an almost fatherly disappointment in them, like being scolded by your dad. The end op episode 2 was like, wow, rassie was really pissed off.

    We really should thank the Irish for that game. Turning point indeed. I feel without it we wouldn’t have won Bok to Bok comps to be crowned the greatest rugby nation ever. Thanks you Ireland!

    Clips of the second episode doing the rounds on social media and lots of people here in South Africa dislike the way Rassie started to speak to the players after the Ireland defeat. Can clearly see these people have never been in a cut-throat environment. Love the inside look this series offers to the public.

    Rugby is fortunate to have hosts such as Big Jim...open-minded, honest and able to present the game of rugby to us in a balanced manner. I love it! Very few presenters are able to do this. If I stumble on a Big Jim excerpt, I never pass it up. Our own Schalk Burger does it fairly well along with John Smit but not quite as well as Jim. Wish John Kirwan and especially Jeff Wilson could take their cue from Jim...
