In today's video I will show you step-by-step how to change the spark plugs on a 2004 Lexus GS 300. The process is very similar for a variety of Lexus/Toyota vehicles with the 2JZ-GE Inline-6 cylinder engine as listed below:
2nd gen. Lexus GS 300 (1998-2005)
1st gen. Lexus IS 300 (2001-2005)
1st gen. Lexus SC 300 (1992-2000)
Naturally Aspirated (NA) Toyota Supra (1993-1998)

Just changed the plugs and wires on my SC300. Crazy that Lexus runs the wires in that heat soaked channel on top of the head and then of course covers everything up with the throttle body and plastic to make sure it all gets roasted in that engine oven. Almost guarantees you’ll have to change everything out every few years. Having said that it is a 30 year old car so the fact that it’s still running and in such good shape is a testament to the build quality. But some of the design choices leaves me scratching my head.
I agree! A few other things that come to my mind are the placement of the oil filter, having the brake booster and ABS module as an integrated unit resulting in a 2000 dollar repair bill if either goes out, and so on. Luckily the build quality does save the day! Thanks for watching! :)

I replaced the coil packs and plugs in my Lexus GS300. I just can’t remember having to remove the throttle body etc. how time flies!

Very good video and explained very well. I just replaced the 3 coil packs, spark plugs and spark plug wires on my 2000 GS 300. Plus replaced the valve cover gaskets . I got a misfire on several cylinders. The spark plugs looked really rough when pulled out. Car , engine just turned 267k . Did timing belt /WP a couple months ago. Goal is to hit 400k with it. I have owned it 6 yrs. Best car built in my opinion. Again appreciate your video it helped me on the coil packs. Learned something new with the waste spark system. Pretty smart technology from Japan. 👍

@@theautochap Valve cover gasket leaking may be why they were drenched in oil. Should've replaced the gaskets too since you've pretty much done 90% of the work already. Just needed to remove a few more bolts to get the valve covers off.

I am going to be doing this on a 1JZ GE engine everything looks similar apart from some things are in definitely places. Also there are not so many vacuum lines and the air intake pipe is a lot different

I was wondering if your planning on doing a GS door lock actuators replacement video, and possibility a Lower Ball Joints, Rear main seal, and maybe suspension shocks and springs replacement video as well? Your videos are very informative and helpful for all Lexus GS Community. Definitely I can see your channel growing with more helpful and useful video like these for all GS community.
Unfortunately I replaced the front LBJs and the door lock actuators just before I started this channel :( but I just finished rebuilding the entire rear suspension and got some great footage, that will cover replacing the shocks! I plan to do my front shocks in the future as well, so I’ll definitely have a video for that too. Regarding the rear main seal, I do plan to drop the tranny at some point in the future as my garage is just too small currently, but I will definitely make a video when I get around to doing that. I’m glad you find my videos helpful, I’m very happy to give back to the GS/Lexus community in whatever way I can :)

Please explain why my bolt holding the coil is not catching on the bolt hole it just spins snd doesnt tighten

I didn’t miss any hoses. I didn’t have to remove all the hoses because I’m not completely removing the throttle body only inverting it to access the spark plugs.

1:00 how cold the engine need to be, can it be modertly cooled like, 1 hour after drive? or does it need to morining start up cool?
Hi Mohammed, ideally it would be best to leave it to cool down overnight, because the engine and also all its hoses are very hot and take a long time to cool down. Since you’ll be removing a lot of hoses and the throttle body itself there’s a risk of burns. If you are in a real hurry, you could wait 5-6 hours but you’d be doing so at your own risk. I'm trying to do the 2jz on my 93 GS but it's totally different than all other 2jz I see online.. nobody has info on my specific engine.. I did my sparkplugs & now my car shakes...😢
Would you estimate how much time it should take to do this? It looks about like 1.5 hours.
Hi Doug, I would say approximately 1-1.5 hours. A big factor is how old the various hoses are and when they were last pulled off, as really old ones are virtually glued on and require a lot of effort to take off. Other than that, everything else is fairly quick.

Are those denso spark plugs the same as oem spark plugs?
Yes denso and ngk are up when cross referencing them at a auto parts store
Denso ARE the oem spark plugs. Most oem Toyota parts are made by Denso, the coilpacks, spark plugs n wires are all Denso OEM. Furthermore the 98-00 GS300 actually require Denso Twin Platinum spark plugs, not Iridiums.
It would be a good idea to take 10 minutes to allow the engine to relearn
