Another great project! If you haven't started filling the 2nd bed yet, you might want to fill the lower foot - 18' with cheaper bagged topsoil, then put some of your good soil from the 1st bed to top it off, then shift the remaining good soil in the 1st bed to one end, put in the topsoil in the empty end & and shift, etc. Bagged Topsoil is a great lower level soil as it will not sink as fast as the fluffier better raised bed or potting soil. I also garden on a strict budget and even fill the 1st few inches of my bigger pots with bagged topsoil to help with the cost. Keep up the great videos!!
Glad to see you've bounced back so quickly from the devastating storm. Love your design. I put together a 17" high vego bed, recently. I did one layer of logs and debries. Also, underestimated how much soil I would need. It's been 3 months and very little settling.
Wow, your plans are really coming along nicely, Amanda! I'm loving it! I've just bought four new raised beds and holy smokes is soil expensive these days! I opted to make my own with 1 part top soil, 1 part peat moss, and 1 part compost, then I top it off with a layer of the good stuff. I mix it in a blue kiddie pool and also use the logs at the bottom. I found that if I water in the soil as I go, I skip a lot of the settling I was getting later when I was planting. I don't know if that would help with yours, but it might be worth a try?
The drawing of what your plans are is going to be so pretty. Do you think about maybe adding a couple of benches to sit at and enjoy all your hard labor? 🤗 with a beverage of your choice. 😌
Yes, I would love to have some chairs on the other side of the arbor but truthfully, I spend most of my relaxation time on the front porch where I can see my kiddos.
I love that you are such a do-it-yourselfer. I could make the beds, but if I tried to carry them outside by myself, I would probably have dropped the bed and tripped over it--hard to say if the bed or myself would have looked worse when done.
Hi, love the new raised beds, I have some , but they are a bit shorter than yours, I used a lot of old newspapers & cardboard I collected over the winter to add to the bottom before added the compost & dirt, looking forward to the next video, Happy Gardening, Ann from Ohio , btw, good drawing 🙂
Put wood logs along the bottom. Less soil to add. I just planted 4 raised beds this way less expensive. I’m loving my raised beds so far!!!!! Mine were from gro right. So easy to put together l
Good morning. Yes I too would be exhausted after filling just one of those raised beds. What a change to the backyard. Amazing. Looking forward to seeing what veggies or plants you plan to grow. So exciting, it is like christmas in early summer. Enjoy the rest of your day.
I have put together a lot of those beds and they are such an improvement to my garden. Yours look so great already. Can’t wait to see the plant, arch/trellis etc. I love the projects you are doing. All that lugging is so hard but the outcome is so worth it. Thank you for the sketching session; that is how I work out things too.
Exciting to see new projects in the works for you. I love the raised beds with the arbor growing vines. Everything you do always looks beautiful. Looking forward to another garden tour in person! It was so wonderful to see it all and meet and chat with you. Now if we can just get some sunshine and a little less rain. My weeds are outta control to the point I'm ready to adopt them as "new garden plants." LOL.
It may help to avoid so much settling if you were to water the soil as you place it. That would help eliminate air pockets as you go rather than allowing the air pockets to settle after you plant your perennials..
I seldom ever get the right amount of soil or mulch. I usually underestimate. The topsoil idea is an excellent one It's probably good that you ran out of soil for your project. That way you physically have to pace yourself. I want to get my project done, so I work really hard and get a bunch done. Then next few days I am so exhausted I can hardly go. Not my best plan.
Amanda, now I'm scared! 😲😨😱🤑 I'm adding MANY new tall raised beds, mostly for veggies but some for cut flowers, and I may need to take out a loan to fill them! (Just kidding on the loan, but not on the being scared part.) Seriously, I need to keep costs reasonable. I plan to use a layer of organic matter, mostly from this recent storm, a layer of cheap but okay topsoil, and then a layer of some good container mix with compost and worm castings. Now I wonder if a free load from Chip Drop to fill between and around the bottom layer would be a good idea. People are concerned about buried wood becoming anaerobic and/or drawing nitrogen from the soil. Maybe I'll do it anyway to save money and compensate by adding more sources of nitrogen as needed. I could refrain from planting many perennials the first year to allow for settling, and I would top off my beds with fresh compost each season anyway. Any thoughts?
I don’t stress about the wood causing issues … I add fertilizer everyone I plant and my soil in other raised beds seems fine. Chip Drop seems like a good idea as well!
@@shesamadgardener Yeah, that's my thought, too. I watched a couple of Chip Drop videos and found out that they can include some logs in the drop, too, if you check a box allowing it.

Good idea on the watering in! Luckily we have had a down pour today, so it is getting very well watered 😂😂😂

I used a bunch of the cardboard when mulching so didn’t have much left over for this project!
Put wood logs along the bottom. Less soil to add. I just planted 4 raised beds this way less expensive. I’m loving my raised beds so far!!!!! Mine were from gro right. So easy to put together l
Whoops I see you put the logs. My mistake
Yes adding logs works so well!
Greetings from Ireland, Great job and lovely raised beds, They are the bees knees.
Yes, thanks!
Yayyy for more garden space!!!
Yay!!!

Loving how the backyard is looking Amanda! I am so sorry for what you all are going thru in Texas. Hope power is back for everyone soon.
The weather has been crazy! We got almost 5 inches of rain yesterday as well.

I think so too!
It's going to be beautiful! ❤
Thank you!

Agreed! We actually just got 5 inches of rain, so I’m hoping that helped with the settling!
Less and less grass!!! You're getting there!!! Can't wait to see what you do with this space.
Can’t wait until all of the grass is gone!
Beautiful lisianthus.
Thanks!
You need to take a vacay to reboot 😂😂..so much work and I know it will be beautiful with the flowers and trellises..great video 😊😊
I leave for Alaska in two weeks!
It’s gonna look awesome 💪👏👏👏👏 lots of work though hauling those bags 😅
You got that right!

Looks great, maybe filling the bottom of the beds with logs or some sort of you don’t need so many bags of compost?
Logs were added to the bottom before I added soil!
@@shesamadgardener sorry, I didn’t write that properly, I meant up to more the half way mark 🤦🏻♀️
I bet you are worn out! Looks great. Hard work but well worth it, I’m sure.
