    I am in zone 8b, but it’s a PNW zone 8b, so pretty rainy in the winter. My greenhouse has been amazing this winter, not so much out of necessity, but because I can go in there, be by myself, listen to the rain, and work with some dirt and plants. It’s totally unnecessary, but damn it’s a constant mood/mental health boost as I balance home, work, and grad school.

    Great video! Thanks for all the information for hardening off seedlings, very helpful. Love the greenhouse. I can’t believe how big all your seedlings are already. Your petunias are blooming and its only February, but you live a much warmer climate. So it is great that you can help us who live in the north and are not able to bring our seedlings out yet. My last frost date is In May. Thank you so much.

    Thanks for all the tips on hardening off seedlings! I have a small greenhouse like yours as well, a little smaller and it works great in the shade specifically for my winter sowing seedlings that are ready to have the tops opened but not ready for in the ground. Great info on hardening off. Your seedlings look so good and you even have some blooms. I bought one of those inexpensive portable Amazon greenhouses 3 seasons ago and it has worked well. Mine is smaller but can fit nicely against a wall in a little nook. Once spring comes I take the cover off and use the shelving unit to store my terra cotta pots.

    I enjoyed your video. I’m glad you showed the rebar stakes, I didn’t know about them. I’ve bought several portable greenhouses over time. My last greenhouse didn’t have a back window and the wind blew it off the frame. I strapped the cover on with ropes across the top weighted down with empty cat litter jugs full of water. I’m getting a permanent greenhouse this month. I’m zone 5b north Idaho. I actually have a greenhouse like yours in my basement with heat Matt’s and fluorescent lights.

    I agree, in Texas we would need something more like a high tunnel style green house with temporary heaters. Something where you could roll the sides up from the bottom and eventually remove the plastic and exchange for a shade cloth to fit over in summer.
    I have a much smaller version of yours, basically a single section of racks about 2-2.5' wide and 5' tall. I have one placed on the south facing wall and another one that I use for inside/outside. They are great for use if you are starting seeds outside or need some temporary space where your nursery grown plants can wait to get into the ground.

    I live in a more rural-like suburban area east of San Antonio. My husband built me a glass greenhouse a little over a year ago and I love it. Yes, it gets REALLY hot in there in the summer time but I do keep my tropicals in there in summer with 9 open windows, and open Dutch door, a ceiling fan and an exhaust fan 😂. That said, in the winter and early spring, I can protect a bunch of my “annuals” in the greenhouse allowing them to survive and thrive sometimes 2 or 3 seasons which saves me a bunch of money 💵 💵 . I have had some confusion about hardening off though. All the videos about seed starting talk about starting seeds indoors and then hardening them off to the outdoors. If I start my seeds in the greenhouse from the beginning, do they need hardening off from the greenhouse to the outside? They are getting sun, wind, and temps in the greenhouse already - just a few degrees warmer than outside.

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If you start the seeds in the greenhouse, there is no need to harden them off as long as they have has some exposure to the temps outside of the greenhouse before you plant them.

    • @Bandaid17

    I have this exact greenhouse. Have used it for 2 seasons. I live in zone 6 in Canada. I use my greenhouse the same way you do. I set it up in March or April depending on the weather. I use it to harden off my seedlings and plants. I also use a little heater in it in the evenings if needed. It is an electric heater made for greenhouses. In May everything gets tucked away until the following spring. It’s easy to set up once you get the hang of it.😊

      Ive had mine for 5 years and took it down for a house move. Was able to figure it out (took 3 hours though). I use it for the shoulder seasons. The wind is a concern so weigh it down with cinder block or rocks. The Velcro and the outside ties degraded in the sun so I use bulldog clips to roll the door and windows up. The shelves are a little shaky so I use the zip ties to attach them to the frame. I keep it up and store pots and some tools in the rest of the season. I’m in (now) zone 6 in PA. Thank you for this great video. Maybe it will save a lot of gardeners a lot of heartache. (Been there done that!)

    Last year, I didn't know that I had to harden off dahlia tubers that I started early indoors in front of windows (with foil around them to reflect light on to the growth). I just planted them out after last frost. They were beautiful, tall, and bushy. I had about 8 dahlias.
    This year, I've been growing saved tubers under grow lightbulbs in a lamp that bends... not your standard grow light. They have all sprouted and grown beautifully, 11 pots. One didn't sprout. I lost a lot tubers to gall, noticed it after I took them out of storage, so I ended up with the 10 after division and throwing away the diseased ones.
    Wonder if hardening off is necessary for bulbs/tubers? Possibly a day or two at most?

    • @shesamadgardener

    I have a smaller version of your greenhouse. Right now it gets 3-4 hours of morning sun. If I understand your information, I could bring out, say my ranunculus, but still for the first 5-7 days, only a little bit at a time and it would be okay to harden them off in the greenhouse. But until they've had about a week outside, I shouldn't leave them in the greenhouse overnight. At the point they've been hardened off, I could leave them in the greenhouse overnight as long as the low temperature isn't a deep freeze.
    I'm going to need shelf space inside so I'm trying to figure out which plants can go out. I may try to put them in the ground but if I can get to mid-March that would be better.
    Do you think my coneflowers that have been growing since the end of November could be hardened off with the ranunculus?
    I agree this process is not for the faint of heart!!!

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So I don’t recall your zone, so my advice ja just for my own zone … ranunculus LOVE cold weather but cannot handle freezing weather. You can definitely start hardening them off just protect or bring in during freezing temps. Start in the shade and gradually add sun and reduce shade … once they have been in the sun all day, more to greenhouse.
