Absolutely! Filling those with the soils needed is going to be $$$$. Hügelkultur is the best way for sure! 😊 Send the feral boys out on stick patrol!!!! Their such good helpers!
I’m Australian and I love my Birdies raised beds. I half fill them with branches and logs and then fill them up with soil and compost. Enjoy your raised bed garden.
Used mulch one year -- had a ton of weeds by the end. Never again!! Now use landscape cloth Living Traditions Homestead uses. Very few weeds and no mud!!!
"Two longs, a long and a short". I worked for Bell Telephone. That statement reminded me of the phone ring on my grandparents 8 party phone line. Can you imagine 7 other families able to hear your calls?
Aussie Aussie oi oi oi. Nice to see an American family using product made in Australia. Our colour bond products are usually guaranteed against fading and determinations for up to 40 years.
Acorn Nuts, Sam. They look good. Yours are not quite as easy to assemble as Doug and Ashley's. Hope you fill the bottoms with branches and leaves. It will save a lot of dirt.
Just going to say ...before you drop a single thing in those beds...put down some sort of wire barrier or you'll be dealing with moles and gophers. It is like the little critters have raised bed radar lol.
1" chicken wire if it does not need to be predator proof... er wait thats for chickens. 1/2' hardware cloth to predator proof, 1" chicken wire for digging proof.
Birdies are top notch garden beds. I like the way you have them, tall beds will save your back. Filling them can get very very expensive. Use hugelkultur methods to fill them. Basically you fill the bottom half with logs, sticks, branches and leaves. Then you put your soil in the top. The wood will break down over time and act as a sponge holding water for your plants.
Sam I fill our raise beds ( made with roofing tin standing up with 2X4 top, saw on another U-Tube channel several years ago) to save dirt we filled them with wood from trees we trimmed, of course we didn’t use any black walnut or we would of had a problem with stuff not growing. Then filled with mushroom compost from JR Farms in Miami, Mo.
I switched to raised beds for same reasons and mine are 32" high. You will love them. I am blessed to have free materials and compost. I believe you are making a great investment in your future.
We bought a really, really, REALLY, BAD! mobile home on one acre. I was telling my sister of the troubles and she called it green acres. Then I said green acre. Then I realized y’all were called green acre. 😂😂😂 y’all give me hope that someday we will have a beautiful home. Y’all are much younger than we are so it may take us longer😂.
That is most definitely in my opinion a raised bed...not a foot high..but a trough size high...you will really enjoy that height..I had five troughs in my back yard..and it was such a joy, to plant the starting pots and seeds..with having to bend way down to the ground...never had the critters trying to eat them...and weeding was kept at a minimal...and then to harvest your treasure..nothing was back breaking...easy reaching towards the center...fir peppers, tomatoes, beans, even cucumbers..up on the trellis..you most definitely are going to enjoy that...can't wait to see the finished project..have fun...
Wow,I love those raised garden beds. The color is so pretty. I bet the boys would love peeling off the plastic coating. I know my kids would. I can't wait to see their final location and what you plan to grow. Your little farm is coming along so nicely. Everything is so perfect and planned out. I love the way you have organized each building. Do you plan to get any animals? I hope you get chickens. It would be a nice project for the kids. They could feed and collect the eggs and keep the coops clean. The bonus is all the eggs you will get. Happiness is watching your videos and dreaming about having a farm someday.
We have chickens already. :) Four laying hens that have been with us a bit. They moved over here when we did. They are the boys' responsibilities -- feed, scratch, water, eggs, and to help when coop clean out is needed. :) We've considered other animals, but need fencing first (on the short to do list).
@@sam-and-angela Didn't realize you had chickens. I guess I'll just have to wait to see what additional animals might be joining the Green Acre Homestead. I hope it's goats.
I have a raised bed from a different company. I suggest using logs, leaves, and sticks to fill the bottom half of the beds, and then you will not have to use so much soil. Have you considered doing a video on bloopers?? It would be a good video.
These are made to last our Aussie sun. If something can last in the sun in aussie, then you know its good!!! Im still not sure about why you put all the compost down for though as well it was a lot just to spread on the ground...would have been better with something cheaper like woodchips
I love you to kids, yes, and I say that because I'm 65 years old. These birdie beds look fantastic. I think that's something I might be interested in next fall. I'm interested in what you're going to be using for a fill for those boxes because they're so deep
I love the garden beds! I decided to try bucket gardening this year. I found a local guy that made the raised forms in any arrangement you desired and he supplied the buckets as well. I’ll let you know later how it all turned out….lol. Love your vids. God’s blessings from southwest VA.
If you haven’t already filled them you can use popcorn packing or the plastic bags from your mulch or garden dirt. Use the bag to fill up with popcorn packing or other mulch bags. You will use less dirt, the plastic does not absorb water and roots can still go down and around the voids. You can reuse again next year.
We made our raised garden beds like a hugo garden.... first we took all of our old bills and junk mail that had been saved for who knows how long and dumped them in the bottom of our raised beds to break down over time. Then we added cardboard along with branches and tree limbs to break down (helping to take up space so we didn't have to use as much compost the first year... then we added compost and steer manure or bags of chicken manure... been so long don't remember for sure now... we love gardening in our raised beds... last two year I had the best tomatoes we have ever grown
If you use the the Hugelkutur method, it is a good idea to leave enough space through the logs and branches for the dirt to sift and filter down through; they can still be pretty densely packed but you want dirt and water to be able to get through to the bottom. With the dirt being able to get down through, then theoretically the feeder roots from longrr/bigger root balled veggies can get around the branches and logs as well if needed.
I agree with Ruth. Your will save so much money and you have the tree line behind your home. You probably already have free materials from that area. You won't have to burn it, etc. I think your new place is shaping up nicely. 😊
Those are the beds I am wanting to go with also, you can't beat the quality or the price that i found them at and with it being metal they won't rot! Totally a great opinion!!! Love your garden
I like enough room to get a wheel barrow around at least the outside edges and around at least some corners crosswise. As needed for space reasons, put 2 beds side by side with a narrower width space which is big enough for walking, watering, and harvesting inbetween. But then on the outer edge of each bed combos, leave enough room for a wheel barrow and/or garden cart to get up to the edge of the beds.
Hi Angela and Sam. I hope you don't mind me passing on another TH-camr besides epic gardener you are obviously aware of called Self Sufficient Me, he's Australian but uses the beds you use. One day I will get to this too much on a smaller scale.
The garden beds look great. Can't wait to see your goodies start to pop up. I never was a good gardener but I surely could and enjoyed picking and preparing everything for all of us to enjoy. Thanks. Your little guy is going to be a great help in the garden. See ya all.
A friend of mine filled the bottom of the beds with straw bails she did that a couple of years ago with no problems. Good drainage and every spring time tops it up with compost and mulch as it sinks and decomposes. Good to hear an Ausy company getting a good wrap thanks love the channel Steve Australia.
Oh man, you won't regret the taller beds!! A bit more investment up front, but oh how it saves the back. I have the same color. Love how it's all coming together!
Hey Sam and Angela, I was wondering with the upcoming spring weather, storms, and tornadoes if you guys have a future project in the works for a tornado shelter?... keep me posted I would love to see that!! :)
Really like these raised bed planters also so smart to make them higher. I'm 70 and lower ones are starting to be hard on the back. Since these raised beds are so high, I'd fill them up half full with leaves and sticks from the forest. You could put larger limbs and logs in the bottom of the beds.
The more you educate us about the tractor and getting to watch Angela learn to master it, I think you've done the research for me. I can stop researching and possibly buy one like yours.
I LOVE THE GARDEN BEDS AND GREAT JOB TO ALL OF YOU. I LOVE BIRDIES BEDS BUT CAN'T AFFORD THEM SO I HAD TO GO ON THE CHEAP ONES AND I ONLY GOT THE 2 FOR ONE PRICE ON 2 - 4 X 8'S SO I WILL BE HAPPY SINCE I CAN GROW AND TWO BEDS I BUILT WITH 1 X 6 X WAS 12 CUT IN HALF. I KNOW THEY WON'T LAST BECAUSE IT'S PINE BUT IT WAS WHAT I COULD DO AT THE TIME.
I've seen these beds on self sufficient me channel. you should use galvanized pipe over your bracing rods because over time... as your soil settles it will weigh down the rods and pull the sides inward. the rods keep the sides from bowing out but not from bowing in. just keep that in mind.
Hey guy, I don’t know if you ever watch Mark from Self sufficient Me but he uses those same beds. He has great information on them and raised bed gardens. You should check him out if you haven’t already. Love your videos ❤
Are you putting fine mesh hardware cloth in the bottom? Seems that would be handy to guard against voles/moles. They look awesome!!! Anxious to see them all planted! 🌸🌸🌸
Hugelkultur gardening. This would be the thing. Saves on dirt and over time makes good compost for plants.
yes, I hope they see this
You spelled it right and absolutely what I was thinking. Fill the beds with sticks or logs at least 1/2 way. Then add your compost and/or dirt.
Absolutely! Filling those with the soils needed is going to be $$$$. Hügelkultur is the best way for sure! 😊 Send the feral boys out on stick patrol!!!! Their such good helpers!
Yes hugelkultur. Large yard waste goes in first. Branches and log sections.
I’m Australian and I love my Birdies raised beds. I half fill them with branches and logs and then fill them up with soil and compost. Enjoy your raised bed garden.
Hi fellow Aussie we love ours as well, how cool is it to see Aussie made sticker! 😂💚🦘
This was SUCH a good setup guide guys!
Thank you! We're eager to finish the rest of assembly and layout our garden!
Used mulch one year -- had a ton of weeds by the end. Never again!! Now use landscape cloth Living Traditions Homestead uses. Very few weeds and no mud!!!
Did you see Doug’s and Ashley’s cut up plastic culvert raised beds? Pretty handy. These look good, too.
We did! :)
Well…..Look at Ms. Angela pulling up to a structure on a tractor... You go girl!
Take care
"Two longs, a long and a short". I worked for Bell Telephone. That statement reminded me of the phone ring on my grandparents 8 party phone line. Can you imagine 7 other families able to hear your calls?
It's pretty cool to see you building your homestead from scratch. I think it will be great!
Pretty labor intensive 😉
I couldn't believe that big thing came out of that box.
You can put branches, etc in the bottoms so you don’t need so much dirt
Aussie Aussie oi oi oi. Nice to see an American family using product made in Australia. Our colour bond products are usually guaranteed against fading and determinations for up to 40 years.
Love all your videos can't get enough of your wonderful family. Your homestead Is looking awesome. Love those two great kids you have.
U can fill the bottoms up with tree limbs. Which would make it dual purpose. Happy planting
Acorn Nuts, Sam. They look good. Yours are not quite as easy to assemble as
Doug and Ashley's. Hope you fill the bottoms with branches and leaves. It will save a lot of dirt.
Good evening Sam and Angela .Hats off to the both of you . literally lol

1" chicken wire if it does not need to be predator proof... er wait thats for chickens. 1/2' hardware cloth to predator proof, 1" chicken wire for digging proof.
Sure will make gardening easier, but now the work of filling them becomes a chore. Good luck and time to get the boys busy. Good video
I love how the boys like to help
Angela you did a fantastic job driving wtg great video from over the pond in 🇬🇧 ty for sharing
Angela you rock that tractor!!

The outtakes are so much fun.
Hi Sam Angela & boys,I really like your raised garden beds.I love the height of them.Have a great week! 🌷💕🌷
The bloopers are always the best!! Great job Mr Sam & Ms Angela
I agree! Love the bloopers! 😂
I switched to raised beds for same reasons and mine are 32" high. You will love them. I am blessed to have free materials and compost. I believe you are making a great investment in your future.
Awwww guys, y’all are working the feral right out of them boys. Lol
Stay safe
Liking the birdies
You should try and get heirloom seed varieties, so that you can collect seed to grow your vegetables going forward.
Good job Angela driving the tractor!
Thanks 👍
Yes , use old tree branches, smaller logs ect for filler before filling with topsoil ! All will compost down and save on topsoil !

0:23 😮Amazing, that y’all picked out the same bed I found and favored myself! $299 each. Did Epic sponsor that video?
Love those raised beds! You might consider placing tree branches and such in the bases, to save on using so much soil.
Can’t wait to see the gardens!
This is the best video on these garden beds so far. You guys did a fantastic job!

I love the idea of raised garden beds. However, Vego bed are just as good, 2 inches taller and less expensive.
So excited....I want those garden beds...good choice Angela for your back....😊
Thank you! 🤗 -A
Looking beautiful, are you going to use Hügelkultur and put dead trees and mulch inside?❤❤❤❤
I love you to kids, yes, and I say that because I'm 65 years old. These birdie beds look fantastic. I think that's something I might be interested in next fall. I'm interested in what you're going to be using for a fill for those boxes because they're so deep

Way to go , working smarter not harder! Make sure the soil you get is certified grazon/pesticide free!
Plus save all the cardboard
Thanks Sam and Angela, I found the web site.

tractor supply 3 pt carry all $250 + lumber, better than the bucket for carry boxes

Are you putting some type of barrier keep critters out? My daughter didn’t and critters just came up the bottom and ate roots of plants.
Take care and be blessed.😊
Looking great! Are you planning to make them mole proof with some chicken wire in the bottom?
I'd lay ground cloth down before I fill with dirt.. JIC gopher/moles.
Thanks you all. Great video!!
Thanks for sharing. Those beds look .
i would fill them up with logs and wood chips then soil
I really love the beds. cant wait see them all set up.

Glad you finally got a equipment sponsor. I didn't know about Birdies but I do now and will look into their products for my raised beds. Thank You.
Sam and Angela are on the way to 100k subscribers!
Have a safe and happy
Hudelkultur indeed. Others have commented. Save money on filler soil. Begin with large items from clearing the homestead.
I can't wait for the planting to begin 🙂
I love the babies always helping.❤
Those deep beds are great for wicking (self watering) beds. Means putting less soil in there, and saves a lot of time watering plants.
Love the raised beds and color
Those are some nice looking beds! Was just going to ask where they came from, thank you for the link.
I love your channel. Hugs from NM ❤

Wow, thank you!
fill the beds 1/2 way with rotting logs and sticks before filling with soil more along the line of a permculter beds
At $300 a pop, I'll stick with my 2 x 10'S raised beds.
Nice, looking forward to the competition 👍🎅🏻
