I got an ‘01 Pete 330 with an 8YL 3126, half a million miles. Its a hobby/ RV truck. I only drive it a few thousand miles a year. LOST POWER, SMOKING so
I had a shop confirmed a #5 injector is bad. I watched your video and took notes. I used to overhaul my 3406s so I felt confident and excited to go and change the injector.
Came out ok. I evacuated oil n fuel lubed new unit… as I should.
DID NOT WANNA SEAT PROPERLY…
Used index pry-bar to push it down.
It ran good for 3 min with valve cover off than I saw oil splashing out. I also think fuel went in oil too as dipstick indicated that.
Have to pull it out n get new o ring kit I think, I DAMAGED O RINGS OR JUST DID NOT SEAT IT PROPERLY.
What did I possibly do wrong?

Best in-depth explanation I have seen. Only one I found that actually shows evacuation of the cylinders. Not to mention all the videos that show using a mallet on the injector to seat it. Makes me cringe when I see it.

Hello sir, I have a 2001 3126 in an F650 with 437k miles. When I first drove the truck the oil level was good but checking it after 200 miles I found that the oil level had risen considerably and was deluted. I did a running temp fuel dye test and found nothing around the injector or on top. At that point I decided to pull the injectors to examine the O'rings. As I removed each injector I notices a lot of fuel running out the tip. Is this normal when first pulling them out? There were no visible breaks or blowouts, but I did notice some dye on the edge of the top O'ring. There was a bit of pitting on the center O'rings of a couple injectors. I am just trying to see if I should just replace the O'rings or order some remains and just be done with it? Thank you for all the great videos and any help you can give.
What is the injector hold down torque spec for a C9 ACERT? Also, is the tightening sequence the same as in the video?

I have a CAT 428f2. This machine have problem with starting. It starts well first but after an hour, if you switch off the engine then it wont start again unless you use a quick start. Can this problem be cause by injectors? All pumps have tested fine.
When simply pulling the injectors out to replace the cups and putting the old injectors back in, do you need to put them in the same cylinder? My truck seems to run rough after installing cups and I'm pretty sure I did not get the injectors back into the same cylinder they came out of.
If I replace injector 3 and 4 do I have to clean fuel and oil on 6 as well or just 3 and 4

Do the injectors on a 3126b have to have trim files loaded for replacemt? I got in a hurry and pulled all the injectors without marking them. Iv got Cat et so I'm assuming that I can just hook up and see which injector goes where? Thanks
+Stephen Cox They don't have any trim files like the C7 engines do. If you are resealing them though, if you get them in different cylinders it shouldn't matter too much.

My caterpillar 3126 is smoking a lot of white smoke and excessive blow by. I just bought the truck and drove it for a week with the old fuel in the tanks still and it’s was smoking a lot I was told to let it go empty, Now I have new fuel in it and it’s still bursting lots of smoke at start up and well driving now I’m told it’s the injectors to replace? As well can the cause lots of blow by ?
@adeptape I have a 99 3126B. One of the injectors is going bad. Is there any way of telling which one of them is bad? Do you recommend getting CAT reman injectors or will it be ok to use aftermarket injectors?
can you give me info on a compression tester i took my 3126 to cat service center and they say i either have a blown head gasket or cracked head $3000,00 for them just to determine which so i picked it up and was gonna verify the #2 cylinder and #3 has no compression before I pull the head

Hello adept, I want to thank so much for your help yesterday. I did exactly what you told me to and I was able to take out the broken screw that hold the injector in place. I really appreciate that, I would highly recommend you to anybody, you're the best diesel mechanic in the US so far that I know no question asked. I when to cat and i bought the 2 screws and the plug to conect the injector it was broken that was the miss i was having. Thanks to you my friend now my truck is up and running. found the issue with the fuel leak the head has multiple out let ports for gauges or what ever you want to put in there and one of the plugs O-ring was bad so just replaced O-ring no more leaks and no removing the valve cover. Thanks for your help keep up the good work....
That shop obviously didn't tell you correctly then. Glad you found it and it was a cheap fix. Yeah there is a gauge port and the fuel return line on the back of the head.

I bought a new o ring kit for a 3126, and a bit confused on one part. The middle o-ring (second from bottom) originally had a back up o-ring installed with it. The kit does not come with another back up o-ring, so I’m wondering do you reuse the original one? Or install the new o-ring without a back up o-ring?

I have a 2007 C7 and I changed the o-ring seals on it. Everything went really good except it will not start. I pulled the top of the valve cover off and oil is blowing by all the o-rings it looks like. I changed the o-ring as it was getting fuel in the oil. Seemed like the best place to start. I used Delphi o-rings on the injectors. Everything went together pretty smooth. Any suggestions would be great. Your videos are great I just didn't find one that showed this issue.

Question I have a 2007 Cat C7 that has Fuel in the Oil. Do the O rings on the injectors fail and cause this?
+Kevin Bethke It can be the orings, but usually it's the injectors themselves and they have to be changed. Watch my fuel dilution video and it'll show you how to troubleshoot it properly. Hope that helps.
When you are talking about getting the oil out of the cylinder are you talking about the injector cylinder or the Piston. My dad and I are replacing the injector cups truck has been broke down for 2 months and we finally got everything to do this is my dad's life line and I don't want to bend a valve getting the first crank over if you can message me back it will be greatly appreciated thank you!!!

How would I charge the injector seals on my 3126
have a question on my 2004 c7 with 28k miles on a f750. most of the time when I go between 50 & 60 mph. it make some pinging noise like timing is off or some time at idle too. what do you think that could be ?
Kevin Tran I have a C7 in a bob tail water truck with the same issue, the shop wanted to change all six injectors, pump and clean out all fuel lines for around $5000, I think all just change the one that’s plugged and see how long it last, you can use a infrared thermometer on the exhaust manifold to see witch one it is( should be cooler than the rest of them) while it’s pinging.

I have a C7 Caterpillar motor I would like to know are there any type of cheap scan tools you can use I have a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust and it has a smell of unburnt diesel I have 4 lights on on the dash two pictures of an engine one picture of a engine with a fan and a oil light
+duane addison I don't know of any cheap scan tools for these engines, although "cheap" is a very subjective term. Car sells little datalink setups and so do companies like Pittsburgh Power that will tell you what the code is, but if you want an actual tool that can be used for troubleshooting you'll basically need Cat ET, which I wouldn't consider cheap.

Hi have you come across c7 transferring engine oil into the fuel? From what I can gather the high pressure orings on the injectors can fail and allow high pressure engine oil into fuel gallery in the head thus returning to tank. But is it correct that the injectors can leak oil internally to the fuel side, I ask this because all the injector orings have recently been renewed but we have oil transfer.

It is a rare problem but yes the injectors can do that if one has failed internally or the orings have failed. It is also possible the head itself could be cracked between the oil rail and the fuel rail.

Hi NuLine, the injectors were at fault, I removed them and had them reconditioned at a fuel specialist and they have been fine ever since. We were getting oil in the fuel and it was visible in the primary filter glass bowl. Where are you based if UK I can put you onto the fuel injection company.

Do you have to put a new valve cover gasket on anytime you remove & replace the valve cover?
+dobb673 Really depends on the engine model and how old the valve cover is. On these smaller engines it's a good idea, but the C15 and C13 engines, they can usually be reused a few times due to them being a really thick rubber gasket.

+Balan Visva Hmmmmm, well without a check engine light, my guess would be injectors. The injectors don't typically send a check engine light and the fuel mapping changes around 150 degrees from cold mode. Without getting a computer on it to troubleshoot though it's just a guess.

If it's just 1 injector then maybe just replace the one. If it's more than one then probably replace the set.
@@AdeptApe thanks! so i think my injector is stuck open.. have a miss and smoking grey smoke that smells like raw diesel. luckily I was only 10 miles from the house, if it happens again, far from home, would you disconnect the injector and limp it home so you don't wash the cylinder out? the truck is a 1999 but only has 21k miles.. like I said new truck for me.. no idea how many hours, need to get the eco scanned to find out

+Bruno Lamote No injectors are painted, the solenoids do have different colors sometimes though. Not sure why they are, some are brown and some are white. I'm sure there is a conspiracy or reason for it, but I don't know it.

You don't need to drain the oil pan to remove the injectors. You do need to evacuate the cylinder of oil and fuel though after pulling the injector.
I have a 03 T300 with 3126 I had a shop replace injectors afterwards it idled very badly and 4 days later one of them split a tip and had to be replaced now is smokes very bad at startup smells like oil. my question is could it be the cups need to be surfaced and oil is leaking into engine when sitting overnight?
+shawn Niehaus Bad injector cups usually leak fuel into the coolant. If you're getting an oil smell it's possible that the orings were damaged when they installed the injectors. Could be a few bad injectors out of the box as well.
I did a manual cut out test this am and did not notice any one injector stand out like you showed in the cutout video my problem is I have no one locally who can test the injectors and that is why I just had a whole set put in do you think it would be worth it to pull them and check the rings? also is it possible that the tech did not suck oil out and caused internal damage? Also will I need to code these injectors on an 03 3126? trim codes?
+shawn Niehaus 3126 engines don't have injector trim codes so you are good there. It is possible that the engine was hydrolocked when they did the injectors, but if you had mechanical damage it should smoke all the time. If you can hook up to it what are the desired and actual injection actual pressures? Have you checked the fuel pressure? Perhaps the wrong injectors were installed, there are different part numbers for the different horsepower ratings.
can I tell by looking at the top of the injectors what number was used it I pull the cover off also for some reason my scanner keeps giving me an error on the fuel pressure PID

In case of a faulty injector, im pretty sure its okay if i only change the faulty injectors and not all the injectors like dealers recommend, dont you think?

Go Reman, they are much cheaper and have the same warranty. If you have a bad HEUI pump and it sent metal debris into the injectors it's a good idea to change them all. If you just have a weak cylinder or two, you can just change them as they go bad.
@adeptape can you use the removal tool to install the c9 injectors?
ive seen some guys just smack em in with a mallet but im scared this will damage the o-rings
+Julian Pineda The removal tool? I only use a heel bar to remove them. You don't need any special tool to install them, but they are a pain. Lubricate the orings with engine oil, then set it in the hole then press firmly down on the top of the injector and try to move it side to side slightly, they will pop in. Then just install the holddown bolts exhaust side first and run them in gently, then torque them.

Yes sir you do, the seals on the sleeves will leak over time which will put diesel fuel in your coolant. If your changing the head, it will have new sleeves in it. If your doing all the injectors and sleeves are over 10 years old it isn't a horrible idea to do it, but if they aren't leaking you don't have to change them. Hope that helps.

+Freddy Polanco If an injector sleeve is leaking fuel into the coolant you can try to pressurize the cooling system when the injectors are out and look for leaks, but this rarely works. If you are getting fuel in your coolant the best fix is just to replace all the injector sleeves. Hope that helps.

If the 3126 has the same heui system as tbe c7, and both have the same hp rating and 7.2 l displacment, then whats the difference between them? is it just the acert and the strict emission ratings?

I have a 3126 with high oil consumption with no smoke or evidence of high blow by. Found evidence of oil in fuel I suspect the reman injector installed about a year ago how common is a crack in the head between the fuel and oil galley? Engine got about 228,000 on it and Thanks for theses videos.
A crack between those two ports is rather rare. You most likely have a bad injector, although it is also possible you have bad oring between the ports on an injectors. You could reseal all the injectors first if you wanted to see, but the issue may be internal to the injectors.

check you heui cranking oil pressure should be 870 psi @350 rpm

does a cat c7 have a intake manifold pressure sensor??
I didn't see your comment earlier or I would have commented earlier, but yes it does. Cat just calls the Boost Pressure sensor and there is an Intake Manifold Air Temp sensor as well.
have a 3126 that is leaking diesel fuel out of the valve cover my oil level is not rising and does not smell like diesel i do not know what is leaking and it is in my tow truck need it fixed asap and dont have the money to send it to a shop. i am a mechanic by trade but no experience with these engines i know i could do the work my self im just looking for a starting point. im thinking it might be one of the injector O-rings any help would be nice thanks
+Steve Porter The oil level isn't rising, the oil isn't diluted and thin either is it? I'm going to assume that it isn't diluted either. Hmmmmm, I know these engines well, but if an injector failed you would have major fuel dilution in the oil. Is the fuel coming out of the crankcase breather? It's hard to troubleshoot over the website, but the fuel runs from the transfer pump then up to the cylinder head under about 70 psi of pressure. Check out my videos on HEUI systems and HEUI pumps, I talk about the fuel system a little bit in them.
the oil is not coming out of the breather it is coming from the valve cover on the drivers side rear after you start it and it runs down the back part of the engine onto the ground. the oil does look a little thinner then is should after looking at it again but it does not smell like diesel. maybe a little fuel is getting into the crank case. i had a shop just take a visual look at it and they said it was coming from the valve cover but just like any other shop they would not tell me much more unless i paid them. i dont want to take the valve cover top plate off and run it to see the leak and take a chance of damaging something. and make a mess.
+Steve Porter If the fuel is coming out of the valve cover, then you should do a fuel dilution test, I've got a video on testing for fuel dilution. You can run the engine with the valve cover off, it'll have some oil throw, but shouldn't hurt the engine. The fuel return line is also on the back of the head so check the connector for leaks.
okay thanks for the info im use to building gas engines and running them with the valve cover off was not sure about the diesel engine with the higher pressures if i run it without the valve cover i might be able to see where it is leaking thanks again i will keep you updated.

It is an OTC vacuum brake bleeder. Amazon has them for 73 dollars or you can get them on any tool truck for about 120 dollars. They work great. They just need shop air to work.

Hmmmmm, any check engine lights? Have you tried getting blink codes with the cruise control switch?
no check engine light...

If it is a regen engine you can't, if it's early you can, I have a video that talks about check engine lights that describes how to pull blink codes. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge to test the fuel pressure? You need to find out if it has check engine lights as well.

+Adan Castro Yes sir I do. Please check your fuel pressure, this complaint you have isn't a common one that is why I'm asking about the check engine light. I haven't seen this on a regular basis.
3126e valve adjustment video
the trim codes are only for when the engine is at idle, (smog reasons) once you step on the accelerator it throws the cal, trim codes out the window.

+Alex Chavez You need the trim file number from SIS. Then go into calibrations under service and select injector trim calibration. Then input out calibration file and it'll ask for the 4 digit confirmation code.

Hey Bud, You appear to be a real cat man..I really enjoy your videos, Im shopping for a newer 5 ton (pre DEF) In your honest opinion,which cat engine would you suggest to be the most trouble free? years ago i owned an 1987/ 3208 cat, i loved it..I think im afraid of the C7, Im l@@king reliability,Your opinion would mean lots to me.. +langgbob If you are looking for a smaller truck engine it sounds like, I would try to get a 3126 if you are going with a Cat engine. They are the precursor to the C7, but have a lot less problems with the HEUI system. The valvetrain and everything what is pretty much the same though. The C7 is an OK engine, but has HEUI problems more commonly.
I have a 1995 3126 in a motorhome my injectors are not that easy to get to they sit under the rack is that definitely a 3126
How to diagnose the injector is bad with out scanner.
