      Had the same issue when I had to learn it. They just said "you can also use a PNG", but didn't show how to hehe. So I'm glad you liked it :)

    You have no idea how long I looked for a video like this. I was having so much difficulty manipulating a PNG someone sent me that already had bones. Every other video showed the individual sprite method and not the whole sprite sheet method, which explains why none of those tutorials worked.
    Thank you AGAIN for going so in depth! The best video out there on this subject.

    Commenting the same as others who found this resource - this is the best tutorial on png sprite importing, skinning, rigging and animation. I've completed most of the Unity Learn tutorials and this is far better. This should be referenced in the Unity forums (if it's not already). Thanks for an excellent resource!

    cheers, thanks for the png heavy tutorial :) i spent about a day trying to set up a png sprite sheet.
    its set to multiple, i sliced them up and by what i understand now i made the entire skeleton only for the hip xD.
    you are very correct in pointing out that there isnt much on the web for png, plus this is very well explained and easy to understand :)

    I've been trying to figure out something for a while, now- if you're using the Unity 2D animator and rigger, how do you add in an eye-blink? Or maybe a mouth movement? I know you can use sprites, but I've found no way to add sprites into the bone system itself.

    Awesome video! I have a question about flipping from let to right. Say I want the character to have a "paper" feel, so when changing direction, the character physically turns to the camera on their way to changing direction (like a rotating a playing card in real life), is there a way to program that in or would that need a separate animation? This wouldn't have any effect on movement, one a direction is pressed it moves, just a visual effect

    Thank you for this tutorial!!! after quite the emotional rollercoaster of debugging I was finally able to make it work. Bless you!
    EDIT: tried to follow along - my PNG appeared to load correctly and I’ve applied the bones, but when I pivot any of the bones, the image doesn’t move but the bones do. I can’t get my image to move at all.
    Edit2: I think my issues had something to do with my PNG layers not being completely clean from photoshop. It’s working now!!!

      @@96Tornadoboy are you perchance also using photoshop elements? Once I made sure none of my layers were overlapping (using the transform layer tool to ensure the box didn’t clip any of my other pieces on the same canvas), I was able to get my sprite into Unity, add bones, and successfully use the auto-geometry tool to bring it all together. Before, when my layers were overlapping due to errant pixels, using the auto-geometry tool just turned all of my image the same color and only the bones moved. Now, everything is weighted properly based on the locations of the bones.

    If there's anyone like me out there and the bone movement at @10:49 isn't deforming your underlying sprite, de-select (double-click in the transparent area), re-select the image(double-click) and re-run "Generate for selected". Your image should turn into a rainbow, with colors matching local bones.

    thank you so much i've followed all the steps and it really helped me. the only issue i faced is in the polygon collider that's generating according to the old sprite positions so it doesn't match my assembled character. i really need help on this one.

      Don't use polygon collider , use capsule or a custom collider

    Hello! Thank you very much for your fantastic tutorials. I have followed a video, but at the end my character didn't move around (I watched the character movement video), however the animation worked perfectly, i.e. it just stands still, but when I press right arrow key it activates the running animation. Do you have any ideas how it might have happened?

    This video was awesome up until the point you flipped the whole character horizontally. If you've layered your character's sprites or your character is holding a weapon, it'll suddenly be in the wrong hand. What's the alternative?

      Creating a sprite for both left and right, and rigging both.

    just one thing, if smthg happened and the player was for example facing the left at the beginning, that would be a problem for your value " facingRight ". Otherwise, it will be so rare and nearly impossible, but it's just for clarifications purposes and to make you think in a developer way so you never miss any logic.

      I think you are confusing yourself because of how I named the fields. 🙂 The issue you refer to won't happen in this example. If your character was somehow facing left instead at the beginning of the game, it would still work in the exact same way in the codes logic. Yes, the naming of the fields would be switched around, but it has absolutely no effect on the game, or on our perceived logic when looking at the code. The way I set this up, is specifically to not miss any logic. 😉

    hmm my entire character just turned red when i did the auto weight thing and the bones arent attached to the character. like the skeleton bone moves without the texture weird

    Does the IK limb solver not work for multiple sprites? Every tutorial I find assumes your limb is made up of one sprite with multiple bones, not three sprites with one bone each. But I need three sprites for each arm because I want to mix and match upper arm sleeves or skin color with fore arm bracers with gloves on hands.

    Im using a .Psb file and the bone depth won't work, the back leg is on top of the front leg /: been stuck on this for like 2 hours nothing seems to put it on top unless i use sprite render on the front leg but then the leg isnt facing the right direction, do i make another sprite that is rotated so i can slap it ontop? i can't think of anything else

      I still haven't found where i made a mistake. so i use this method and it works.

      I was able to fix it. There needed to be one more bone in the skeleton and now its working fine

    I have PSB file, but i cant add as player sprite! I can only see body party one by one. For example there is no full body sprite in my PSB file, Just have leg arm head etc. What I can do for that ?

    Even though my sprites are all physically separated on a transparent bg on the png, for some reason the auto geometry is like connecting everything rather than having them separate! What am I missing? I can't figure this out :(

    I have one question why do gamedevs mostly use psp instead of adobe illustrator I feel like illustrator makes more sense when you're not editing real life pictures?

      There are a couple of reasons. 🙂
      1: Unity supports Ps files, but not Ai files.
      2: Ai is mostly meant for illustrations, and isn't as versatile as Ps.
      3: Ps is easier to learn.
      4: When you export images from Ai, the "vector benefit" goes away.
      In general... Ai is for a very specific type of drawings, which aren't that flexible for certain types of media like game dev. Where as Ps is extremely flexible. But you can still use Ai for game art if you want to. 🙂
      Yes... Ps is "technically designed for editing photos", however it is also an amazing tool for creating art, including 2D art for games. 🙂

    every time i use the sprite editor, and put it full screen, it becomes hard to exit out of it. The only way for me to exit is to press the X and quit Unity entirely.
    When i return to unity, i see nothing is in my scene at all. Anyone know how to fix this, or what exactly is going on?

      you can right click on the tab written sprite editor and click close tab also don't forget to press apply before closing and you can just switch to other tabs also without closing it also

    Hi, I've been troubleshooting for a while - How do I animate without using skeletal features? I have several PNG images I have that I want to combine together to create a "slashing" animation for one of my characters, but I have not been able to create an animation in Unity for these pictures.       Please use Unity Animator. There you can place the frames and it will create an animation for you.

    When import psb files in unity, the layer effects i used in photoshop not showing in unity. Is there any option for this problem?

      Layer effects can’t get exported into Unity, but there is a workaround. Inside Photoshop, select the layers, and right click, then choose “convert to smart object” (if I remember correctly). This will allow you to edit the effects layers still, while it working inside Unity 🙂

    I have an issue when flipping the sprite. The sprite isn't centered due to the way the sprite sheet is drawn. So when it flips it does a small teleport. Where can I center this? I looked everywhere for it.

    Hi, when i flip my player the y scale also flips, how can i solve this ?

      It's a bit hard to say without a code snippet hehe, but my guess is that you are accidentally flipping the Y in your Flip() method.

    If we have a psb file how to replace the box character with that

      You can't from my understanding 😕 It is one of the most disappointing issues I have had with Unity ever since I started using it.
      A PSB file is actually a empty gameobject with multiple sprites inside of it, so because a PSB file isn't a single sprite, you can't just drag and drop it into the placeholders Sprite Renderer to replace it.
      The solution to this issue is to just drag your PSB file into your scene, and then copy and paste ALL the placeholder components to your PSB file... One by one... Since Unity doesn't have a "copy multiple components" feature build into it.
      Not being allowed to "copy multiple components" is literally the worst user-experience issue I have ever encountered in Unity hehe.
