I wholeheartedly believe that the After series would be far more compelling if Harden was portrayed as the villain rather than a love interest. It could be Tessa's coming of age story, diving headfirst into a toxic relationship and slowly learning to believe in herself and make her own decisions and discovering who she wants to be, while Harden is her antagonist.
I actually read the last book when I was in sixth grade and they do have a kid or a few I think and he’s a devoted father for some reason I don’t know, seems like bs 🏃♀️
She's attracted to Hardin cause her dad left her - this actually makes so much sense, if only they focused on Tessa's mental why she's so attracted to Hardin despite him treating her like shit
And also she’s basic and toxic too, but not as harmful because her toxicity doesn’t always to violence. Tessa needs to get a personality and get busy with herself and maybe then she’ll see how much of a bitch hardin is, everytime they split up, she’s like going down that good road of building herself, but goes back immediately to being basic and toxic everytime for some reason.
@@myunwantedopinion7278 all early relationships can affect how you form them later on, especially a big one like a parental relationship that young. it also shows how her mom likely chose bad partners and what they were used to putting up with for multiple reasons. the bs tolerance meter is higher than other healthy individuals. it's not uncommon for kids to follow their parents' habits subconsciously. it would be a bit more interesting, if not very cliche, to explore that part of Tessa but her and her trash bf are both the worst so I think ending it would be better and finally send a healthy message after the toxicity that the audience had to endure. her having no/a poor relationship with a parent that left them like that, it makes sense that she'd be more likely than others to put up with poor behaviour from others regardless of the type of relationship, but also that she doesn't have a great example to model or compare with a healthy partner in a romantic relationship. but unlike her mom, she doesn't have kids so she doesn't even have that to consider as a reason to stay -- like girl, just run and work on yourself. I'm not even completely aiming this rant at this awful trilogy and the characters but in general because people are so quick to name stuff like this "mommy or daddy issues" when it's dismissive of the actual problem and in modern day has gross connotations like you're implying. I'm sure there are fans who see the character like that but I don't think that's what OP was hinting at.
Hardin: “Be honest. I won’t be mad.” Tessa: *Is honest with him and tries to communicate like an adult* Hardin: *Storms off like a toddler having a temper tantrum*
There’s a major difference between walking away when mad as to not hurt your partner during a hard talk, and what Hardin does. Good god he needs to stop
How is it that all the bad fanfiction gets made into movies when there's actually talented writers making good stories and they always get overlooked for stuff like this?
Hardin-spawn are capable of burdening any ol’ uterus. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no version of this fictional universe in which Hardin _doesn’t_ cheat on Tessa. (Shocking, to be sure. Not least because he “totally” seems like the strictly monogamous type)
@reading_and_hiding the film isn’t real and her statement is about the film which again isn’t real. so don’t take what the op person said to heart because i doubt they would say such a thing to a person in real life
This guy in my class (he's a FILM STUDENT by the way) told me these are his favorite movies and talked about how amazing they are (you should've seen my face). It's kind of wild because when I was a teen, I used to eat stories like this up and I never realized how toxic it was (especially since my mothers relationships have always been toxic as well) It wasn't until college (majoring in psych) that I realized how horrible these relationships are. They're not about love but rather control and I'm super glad I never dated back when I had that old mindset because it could have caused me even more damage.
It's sad that more teens are being raised on stories like this and they won't realise the harm in it until they're well into adulthood. Some might never even realise until it's too late
THIS is the problem with this disgusting genre. Telling young impressionable teens (especially those who are already dealing with life and mental issues) that relationships like this are okay because “relationships are complicated.” They won’t know the truth until they see the bigger picture as an adult, and by then, they may have already made terrible mistakes that can never be undone. Or worse, they never really wake up from this mindset… And it always irks me how they throw so many sex scenes because they know that’s what these teens want. Honestly, aside from sex, what else is there in this godforsaken relationship!?
@@minisn3066 we can only hope the last movie will end this terrible relationship and bring to light that it's abusive and unhealthy. that's the only way this series could work in an actually beneficial way. but i doubt it will - i think the writer has some unresolved issues and thinks this is what love is. very sad. i appreciate commentary and review channels going in depth about why the movies are problematic, but unfortunately i'm pretty sure at least some of the fans will be brainwashed into thinking relationships like this are okay.

This whole “toxic boys are sexy” thing created by that ghastly Stephenie Meyer makes me sick, and it’s so harmful to young women. Ick. Your commentary is A+++ though!!
I agree that the bad boy trope is harmful, but I think you’re giving Stephanie Meyer a little too much credit lol-I don’t think she created the trope. She certainly utilized it liberally and could even be said to have been the catalyst for a certain type of “supernatural emotional bad boy” (or just bringing about a new wave of the trope in general-seeing as ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and ‘After’ aren’t supernatural, but are direct results of Twilight) but the “bad boy” trope existed long before Twilight ever did.
Yessssss!!!!!! Preach. Because people say you can’t control what people wanna write and watch, but the impact is that these medias influence young girls, and in the back of their heads they’re fantasizing about toxic man boys
I got halfway through hate reading the first book before my phone cracked out an exited the ebook and I took it as a sign to stop reading and I’m glad.
One of the worst reads. I struggled to get through the first and second book (why did I read the second? I hate myself). Didn’t go any further than that because I just really hated both of the characters.
I read out of curiosity, and I wish I could get my time back… such a waste, I hate the fandom defending the toxic behavior too, this type of relationship is abusive to the least.
The whole 'boyfriend comes to visit you because he dreamed you cheated on him' actually happened to me. In that moment you don't really know how much of a red flag that is. Until you brake up and you start to think back and question some of the things you ignored because you liked him. Then you realise all the red flags that were in your relationship.
A wild thing about this series, is that Harry Styles seems like he would be a great BF, and he's just overall a really likeable guy. So the fact that someone was so obsessed with him that they wrote a fanfic, yet wrote this character that is NOTHING like him, is really weird. Like, there are PLENTY of garbage men out there that will treat you like this, so why did they choose one of the guys who, to the best of my knowledge, never would?? The biggest draw to most of the adult women that are into him, is his personality, and the author of this distorted it into something so unrecognizable, and effectively sucked out every good quality he has, which makes me wonder what she actually even likes about him... Two of his biggest songs are literally about adoring you, and going down on you lol
Yeah the whole “Harry Styles bad boy” used in a story narrative was so weird to me, and I would know, I was a directioner at the time. I remember finding dozens of fanfiction that depicted Harry as the bad boy type and/or serial dater and it always rubbed me the wrong way, especially in real life where the media thought that’s who Harry actually was
I was never a dirsctioner so I may be wrong but didn't Harry styles get this image of a bad boy heartbreaker cause he dated and broke up a lot back in one direction peak days? 🤔
Dylan thinking the 4th movie will be the last one of this series is the highlight of my day. Plot twist - they announced that they've already shot not only the 4th one but also the 5th movie so Dylan, you've got at least 2 more to go... Yeah, good luck with that

Dylan: “The thing I love most about this movie is the establishing shots.” Also Dylan: “STOP USING THE SAME ESTABLISHING SHOT!!” Even the one thing he enjoys is ruined by this toxic franchise
Dylan's braincells collided and fell out of his ears after watching this movie. But seriously are they really called 'After We Collided' and then 'After We Fell'? What are the next movies gonna be? 'After we hit the ground' and 'After we got back up'?
You laughing at Hardin's pain, while excitingly saying "YES SUFFER, CRYYYYY", was the most hilarious shit I have seen in a while lol. This whole reaction was the type of quality content I signed up for.
I watched the movie in the cinema with two friends of mine. And at this scene everyone got so sad because of Hardin and dylans reaction was mine in the cinema. I litterally laughed my ass off.
“How is this a joy to read” Dylan I’m glad you asked. As someone who read the series when it was first published on Wattpad this was a PAIN to read bc he is sooo much MEANER in the wattpad version and the only thing that got me through was the v fire **x scenes (much better than the movie) & the fact that is readers were able to comment on literally every paragraph dragging him to filth & cracking jokes. It really was the community that made the suffering worth it
so pls tell me that the author is aware that Hardin is a toxic terrible boyfriend and she didn't try to romanticise him. Please, please, tell me it wasn't her intention to make his abusive terrible behavior look hot and desirable...
There should not be a theme of “Tess meets a nicer guy than Hardin to show how horrible Hardin is. Hardin gets jealous and Tess goes back to Hardin despite there being a nicer guy” in every movie. It gets redundant
They're going to let this toxic relationship have a child and act like they skip into the sunset after we watch Hardin emotionally abuse Tessa her whole pregnancy. And scene.
Same xD When I've heard from other channels that there are like three more movies coming after this one, I was just like "but why???"... The first three movies seemed all the same to me, so what should be different in the rest of them?
if anyone ever tries to convince you that you’re the “best thing” to ever happen to your partner and guilt you into staying with them: GET TF OUT OF THERE!!
I couldn't effing stand this, when other people who somehow love Hardin (basically his family and whatever few friends he has) constantly pressured Tess into staying with Hardin, when clearly, her staying with him literally did NOTHING and they were both miserable with each other the whole movie/books. It was a really bad case of "Tell, don't show", which tends to happen with beginner writers (as Todd was when she wrote the first fanfic). They TOLD us that Tessa was the best thing ever for Hardin, but SHOWED the exact opposite.
@@Astrocam88 Thank you! The truth is she is probably than all the other gf's but even so he is bad for her and she deserves better. @@jclyntoledo Exactly. Just because Hardin started interacting with his family more after he met Tessa and found out she was friends with his step-brother, doesn't mean that he actually cares about being around his family. He's literally just there because Tessa is there, and he can't leave her alone for five seconds without being jealous of her interacting with someone else, even if it's his family. I've seen people on my Facebook be in abusive relationships, post about it crying and upset all the time, and yet when the fighting is over momentarily, their friends congratulate them on "working things out" and "getting back together". No, those are enablers, not friends. You know things are inevitably going to go south again, but their friends just keep encouraging them to stick it out. It's sad.
the fact that the original fanfic was written about Harry Styles when Harry is literally the exact opposite of Hardin irl. If y’all don’t leave that sweet ass man alone 😭
Imagine how sad Dylan will be when he finds out there is already a planned 5th and 6th After movies announced. On a prequel and the other a sequel. I felt his despair for finding out there will be a fourth. I can't imagine the sadness that those movies may actually exist someday.

I have to admit. I read the books because of a friend of mine and i asked her immediately after Smith and hardin connected if there might be a connection. I love how mad he gets about Hardin being rude to the waiter. I work at a hotel reception and help out at the restaurant and people think way too often that they have every right to treat their waiters etc like sh*t and I appreciate people standing up for all of us in the service industry. Like dude, we are not getting paid enough for this sh*t but we just have to smile through it and hope karma will come around and do its job. Or Dylan.
The way they literally change the actors for any character that is not Tessa and Hardin in each movie. Different mum, different boss, different Landon. Dude some consistency please!
I think he was worried she'd get along with her dad and no longer have daddy issues so she wouldn't need him anymore. Lmao On another note, this has to be my favorite commentary by far 😂😂😂😂
I love how the only thing that really made Dylan happy was establishing shots and Hardin crying. This is literally the worst toxic relationship i've seen in a movie and I agree with Dylan that they could've made Tess and Hardin have happier scenes and not either: 1. Harding being in a mood or 2. Them...doing things...yeah I just want to say Dylan that I love your videos and I always look forward to watching them after school and when I haven't had the 'best' time, I know you and the troublemakers will be there to make me happier. You make me smile and laugh every time and it's amazing.
What does it for me is that the author didn't write this toxic abusive character to put a spotlight on abusive relationships or inspire people to get out of them, but because they genuinely thought all of the abuse was romantic and hot... It's so messed up and I can't believe it was made into a movie 💀
I think she made an excuses in the past, that she did it to show realism because relationships like this really exist but like?? It’s literally just romanizing it, and at the end Hardin “changes” and he’s all of sudden a good guy. Which is just teaching young girls that if you wait long enough your abusive boyfriend will change and that’s not the case. She 100% should of did something in the end showing how it’s not okay to be treated like that. It’s a terrible message to send. I kinda get it if it stayed a Wattpad story because they’re a lot of Wattpad stories like that out there, but to make it into a book/movie is beyond me
the worst part is that author wasn't a child that would normally romanticize things like this bc of 2013 wattpad influence. THE AUTHOR WAS ALREADY A GROWN 23-25 YO WOMAN
I feel sorry that you watched this in theater, but it's also hilarious that everyone burst out laughing at Hardin's nightmare of Tessa "cheating" on him. Lmaooo it's like DUDE they weren't even together at that point. So who the eff cares if she did move on with someone else?? This isn't love, it's obsession. It hurts when an ex that you might still have feelings for moves on but like...also you can move on too? lol.
the dad has a skull + snake tattoo, the Hardin actor played a young Voldemort... AND he wants to go to London. Pretty sure the fourth one will have Hogwarts in it.
I feel like Hardin and Tessa’s children are gonna be the ones who’re always in their room distracting themselves with video games or music so they don’t have to hear their parents arguing downstairs for the 5th time that day For anyone who’s gone through that or still is, more power to ya and bless your souls
Ok but why did you describe my childhood. I literally can't stand these 3 movies and the only way I've watched is through movie commentaries like this one

We read something similar in high school in class and let me tell you I still hated it
Let’s be honest. If hardin and tessa had a child, hardin would find a way to get rid of it out of jealousy
I would imagine it being very similar to the scene in 50 Shades Freed when Ana tells Christian she’s pregnant and he throws a temper tantrum.
I actually read the last book when I was in sixth grade and they do have a kid or a few I think and he’s a devoted father for some reason I don’t know, seems like bs 🏃♀️
He would be the type to get jealous that she's giving too much attention to the child
Yea we would see him pouting and confront Tessa with that look on his face
I honestly agree. My step dad is similar behavior wise to Hardin and I can tell you he gets jealous a lot whenever my mom pays attention to me.
So... Daddy issues?
What about Hardin makes people go "Daddy!"?
@@myunwantedopinion7278 more like he's terrible and that's kinda the sort of stuff daddy did
@@myunwantedopinion7278 all early relationships can affect how you form them later on, especially a big one like a parental relationship that young. it also shows how her mom likely chose bad partners and what they were used to putting up with for multiple reasons. the bs tolerance meter is higher than other healthy individuals. it's not uncommon for kids to follow their parents' habits subconsciously. it would be a bit more interesting, if not very cliche, to explore that part of Tessa but her and her trash bf are both the worst so I think ending it would be better and finally send a healthy message after the toxicity that the audience had to endure.
her having no/a poor relationship with a parent that left them like that, it makes sense that she'd be more likely than others to put up with poor behaviour from others regardless of the type of relationship, but also that she doesn't have a great example to model or compare with a healthy partner in a romantic relationship.
but unlike her mom, she doesn't have kids so she doesn't even have that to consider as a reason to stay -- like girl, just run and work on yourself.

It's kind of wild because when I was a teen, I used to eat stories like this up and I never realized how toxic it was (especially since my mothers relationships have always been toxic as well) It wasn't until college (majoring in psych) that I realized how horrible these relationships are.
"He's been dying to spend more time with Hardin..."
"Said no one EVER!"
:'-D
I think he was worried she'd get along with her dad and no longer have daddy issues so she wouldn't need him anymore. Lmao
On another note, this has to be my favorite commentary by far 😂😂😂😂
I love how the only thing that really made Dylan happy was establishing shots and Hardin crying. This is literally the worst toxic relationship i've seen in a movie and I agree with Dylan that they could've made Tess and Hardin have happier scenes and not either:
1. Harding being in a mood or
2. Them...doing things...yeah
I just want to say Dylan that I love your videos and I always look forward to watching them after school and when I haven't had the 'best' time, I know you and the troublemakers will be there to make me happier. You make me smile and laugh every time and it's amazing.
dylan: it's probably because her dad left, that's why she's attracted to hardin.
me: *twerking in daddy issues*
Daddy issues you say…. Wassup

@@manasvijain8304 Oh cool cool cool cool cool, no doubt
What does it for me is that the author didn't write this toxic abusive character to put a spotlight on abusive relationships or inspire people to get out of them, but because they genuinely thought all of the abuse was romantic and hot... It's so messed up and I can't believe it was made into a movie 💀
And now 4 movies 💀
Yeah the books and films are legitimately harmful for young people
I think she made an excuses in the past, that she did it to show realism because relationships like this really exist but like??
@@malena6539 REALLY ? i thought she was like 14 when she wrote it 😵💫
I watched it in theatre.
And when Harden’s nightmare came everybody collectively burts out laughing.
You went to the theater for this 😭
@@gee2541 i can feel your disappointment all the way here 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I feel sorry that you watched this in theater, but it's also hilarious that everyone burst out laughing at Hardin's nightmare of Tessa "cheating" on him. Lmaooo it's like DUDE they weren't even together at that point. So who the eff cares if she did move on with someone else?? This isn't love, it's obsession. It hurts when an ex that you might still have feelings for moves on but like...also you can move on too? lol.
@@fflarexx9061 Lmaooo I was saying it with no judgment, truly, but could not understand why someone would put themselves through that 😆
LMFAO
UGH dylan your excited, cheeky little grin when you find a clever segway to the sponsorship is SO ADORABLE
the dad has a skull + snake tattoo, the Hardin actor played a young Voldemort... AND he wants to go to London. Pretty sure the fourth one will have Hogwarts in it.
I would actually love that 😭💀😂
that would make it better honestly
This comment 🤣🤣
The sheer annoyance when Dylan found out there’s gonna be a fourth movie and he’s not actually done with them is so relatable.
Wait actually? There’s gonna be another one???
@@cuziknewyou Sadly yes.
@@DrGregoryHouseIT WHHHYYY!
Just imagine when he finds out there'll also be a prequel and a sequel
Dylan saying Fuckin Treva is everything I needed in life and more
What time?
i love this guy
he keeps me from watching shitty movies and wasting hours of my life and also makes me laugh?? thank u dylan you're awesome
I feel like Hardin and Tessa’s children are gonna be the ones who’re always in their room distracting themselves with video games or music so they don’t have to hear their parents arguing downstairs for the 5th time that day
For anyone who’s gone through that or still is, more power to ya and bless your souls
SPOILER***
Actually if you read the books, they have such beautiful relationships with their children and their connection is so much stronger
You literally just described my life, I feel so seen right now 😂🤚
I cannot imagine the life of those children with a controlling father and a submissive mother. These people should not have children.
Ok but why did you describe my childhood. I literally can't stand these 3 movies and the only way I've watched is through movie commentaries like this one
