It’s good that you have your system piped in such a way that you can isolate AND drain the piping to expansion tank. Makes swapping them out far easier than having to drain, refill, and purge a boiler
Thanks for the Positive Feedback. It makes it feel worth my time when people let me know it helped. Depending on how easy your tank is to get at it typically isn't too hard of a job! Thanks for taking the time to send a thanks!
if you check the air valve on the bottom and air comes out, tank is ok ,but don't let out to much. you can check the pressure with a tire pressure gage, but I have no idea what pressure you need. if nothing comes out, it has lost air for some reason or is bad. if water comes out ,it is definitely bad.
I made a mistake by taking out all the air from the expansion tank, not my hot water radiator make loud noise (very scary). Is there way i can put air back without taking the tank. Also, tank is full of water inside when i took out the air. Please advise, thanks.
@@AZ..... there is a rubber diaphragm inside the tank, with air on the side with the air valve like you see on a tire, and water on the other side of the diaphragm . when the water gets hot, it expands inside all the pipes and furnace. if it cant expand into air side of the expansion tank, because there is no air to expand that rubber diaphragm into, it will raise the pressure inside the pipes until something gives. Usually and hopefully, you will blow off the pressure release valve and scalding hot water will come blasting out so a pipe doesn't blow up. all kinds of noises can start happening . but when the pressure release valve goes of , that will scare the crap out of you. To put air back in with an air compressor, You should call home depot and ask a plumper if you can just put in air and how many pounds of pressure to put in . OR , if you first need to , shut furnace circuit breaker off, let everything cool down, turn off the house water and run the water somewhere till it stops and there is no pressure in the lines . and once the hot water in the system has cooled, you may need to depressurize the heating system to by opening a drain valve or the pressure release valve to. that way no pressure will be pushing into the air side and you can put in the recommended pressure. but call some plumbers and ask . someone will help . and call home depot too. they will probably walk you trough it. I call and ask stuff all the time.
@@immrnoidall Thank you so much for you advice and taking time out doing it. I really appreciate it. I will contact HomeDepo and go from there. Again, Thank you.
Would it be fairly easy at the same time for me to add to my system those two valves you have (the one you used to shut the water off and the one you used to drain the water/release the pressure), or is that likely a more involved project?
Were you having issues with them? I'm a minimalist and if they weren't leaking then I wouldn't change them. The relief valve may need to be changed, but I figured if it wasn't what was causing the leak why fix it. Although being proactive is never bad. I'm not sure what you system looks like, so no idea what you're working with or the age of your system or how it was installed.
Great video. My tank is mounted above the pipe, I tried to twist it off but it started to also twist the pipe underneath. Is there a tool to counter the twisting of the pipe it is inserted into?
What about if Nothing comes out air or water? Can I put air back into the tank? The hole oil furnace without a water heater/tank was down for quite some time..all I have is this expansion tank maybe 4/5 gallon...Ty if anyone answers this question ✌️
@@kertrowlins3954 If nothing comes out, you probably need air. Don’t put that much air in it, I think it only holds 12 to 14 pounds. But look online for the correct information.
What's the problem if I CK the pressure on the expansion tank and I get nothing? (4 or 5gal) No pressure or water & it's the only tank I have. I don't have a water tank...
You probably need to replace if old. If you remove it and it's super heavy (water logged) then the diaphragm is usually bad. You can also check this link out. stallionplumbingsaltlakecity.com/5-common-expansion-tank-problems-and-how-a-plumber-can-help/
If you had that much pressure from a system closed just above the expansion tank, wouldn't it make sense that the tank was still good (ie, the bladder still intact with 12-15#'s of pressure pushing against the water?) If it was blown out and you vented the system by opening the pressure relief valve, it should be full of un pressurized water. Perhaps your inlet water pressure reducing valve (50 psi to 12-15#'s psi) has gone bad, allowing increased pressure in the system and it wasn't your expansion tank? Probably not a bad Idea to replace it anyway, as they are made in Neverland...they never last. My $0.02 anyway.
you didn't pressurized you new tank to match your system pressure. tanks usually come with only 12psi . and you didn't change out pressure valve? no need if the tank was bad.
i WONDER ABOUT THAT, I SEE IN SOME VIDEOS PEOPLE DONT MATCH THE PRESSURE WITH HOUSE PRESSURE, AND SOME DO, SOME JUST INSTALL IT WITH FACTORY 12 psi, WHO IS RIGHT, DO YOU KNOW ?
You don't drain the system. You just shut the water off to the tank by closing the valve. After you install the tank just open the water valve and you're done.
Tip: Water is 8lbs per gallon, multiple by your tank size to determine the max weight "if" completely full to know if you can handle it alone.
That is correct and definitely important... I'm going to pin this one at the top. Thanks!

Yikes if there is room you may want to put in a couple valves. Hope you got it and the job went smooth

Good job...that was awesome--thanks a lot for making this video...it was straightforward and helpful.
did your expansion tank come pre pressurized or did you have to use a bicycle pump to set the pressure inside?
Many thanks !! This video was very helpful to get my heating system fixed !!
Thanks man, had same problem and this was an easy fix.
Appreciate the comment. Wish everyone sent a thanks that it helped. Glad it worked and saved you some $$$
do you match your water pressure coming in. for a boiler. you didn't talk about the tank pressure. Curious I'm gonna change my tank out
thanks for this no nonsense "layman" walk through appreciate it.

If I press on the air valve and water squirts out is the tank broken?
yes

Are you sure about 150 lbs pressure in tank and with air pressure in tank I would think tank was ok.
It looked like you put the tape in wrong direction.
My parents never taught us this shit (well a lot of shit) thanks 🙏
Just fyi.. you wrapped the tape in the wrong direction on the tank
Wrapping clockwise and the tank spins on the same way which does not cause it to unravel.
