drain expansion tank tank on old boiler

    Question. In my area 99% of these plain steel tanks have no airtrol fitting on the bottom. Just a regular bib or gate valve. This makes it time consuming to drain these things down. Would you add the proper fitting or retrofit an extrol style tank?
    Another question.. every time I drain one I end up with a Pressure reducing valve that doesn't open to fill and then sticks open and I have to valve it off. Would you replace the PRV or leave it valved off?

    No bladder to go bad, Won't lose the 12lbs of pressure from a leaking Schrader valve. There's something to be said for the old style expansion tank.

    Does anyone know if that old style drain with the air port is still available and what is it called? I would really appreciate the info. I have a similar tank and it is difficult to drain.

    Dont know if I will get a comment being this video with so old but got a question. We have a tank like this and when I drain it down and open the PRV back up, it instantly feeds the tank. Almost back to the top to make 12PSI for the PRV To quit supplying water. What am I doing wrong? Every cycle ends with a relief valve popping off

    The old expansion tanks are the best

    I just bought a house that has an old expansion tank similar to this, however it only has one threaded hole to connect it to the system with a boiler drain on a tee, no bleeder, no sightglass.
    When you reopen the valve that isolates the tank from the system, the tank just fills up with water. Does it only partially fill with make up water? How do you stop it from just flooding the tank right after draining it?

      Hey did you ever figure out the answer to this? I have the same type of system and am dealing with the same problem

    • @worlddomin623
      @worlddomin623 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I decided to just run the system and see if it would pop the relief valve when it reached high limit, and to my surprise, nothing happened 😁
      System pressure reached maybe 18psi, even after running for 10+ minutes. Not sure if this will lead to problems down the road, but it has heated my house just fine so far

    • @worlddomin623
      @worlddomin623 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do plan on replacing the whole boiler myself, and I will switch to a bladder tank with an air separator, as well as a magnetic dirt separator to keep some of the iron particles from my system out of my new Weil-Mclain

    • @akakeanu
      @akakeanu ปีที่แล้ว

      @@worlddomin623 Wow thanks for the quick response! Just to clarify, did you leave the valve between the expansion tank & system closed? Or if you opened it, did it stop filling up with water eventually? I'm planning on switching to a bladder tank soon as well. But in the meantime I am still stuck with the bladderless one and trying to get the house heated.

    • @worlddomin623
      @worlddomin623 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@akakeanu No, I left it open. Based on how they are supposed to work, theoretically that valve would need to stay open for the water to have a path to the tank to 'expand'.
      It did stop filling eventually, I'm guessing once the tank was full. I would turn it on and see what happens like I did, my system is an old converted gravity system with lots of large radiators with long runs to the boiler, I have a lot of system capacity for a little 150k BTU boiler. Not a hydronic heating expert, but it could be that based on the large volume of my system, the boiler doesn't have a chance to actually reach 180°F and therefore expand enough for the relief valve to open.
      I would put a bucket under your relief valve vent to see if your system will expand enough to reach 30psi, and I would also sit there and watch the system heat up and keep an eye on the pressure gauge until you're sure nothing will happen.

    Hey Steve I have the same expansion tank on my system, I have a Benjamin cc500 wood/oil boiler. I recently bought this house and new to hot water radiation. I’m having a hard time to heat my house with just wood, the lady that owned the house before said she had antifreeze added to the system. I’m going to drain the system and replace just water, do I need to drain the expansion tank.?
