Water Powered Backup Sump Pump

  • Here is my water powered backup sump pump setup using a Liberty Pumps Sump Jet SJ10. I chose this setup after spending a night bailing water to save a family members basement. They had a battery powered backup pump which lasted about 45min after the power failed and the power remained off for several hours. The water powered pump should continue to work as long as you have water pressure.

I've got a Sumpjet myself. I run it as a 3rd line of defense. I have a primary, a battery backup, and the Sumpjet. I highly recommend replacing the float switch used on the primary pump. A vertical switch is at most big box home improvement warehouses and typically run less than $20. Just a recommendation. Also, instead of unions on the discharge, just run furnco fittings. They are easier to install, maintain, and perform quite well.

Realizing how short-lived is life of battery backup, your 3rd line of defense makes perfect sense. Do need check valve on sump exhaust pipe, and separate breaker for installed AC backup pump.
Not sure how much extra backup I need. Not in a flood plane, have very low water table, and all downspouts drain via pop-ups downslope from house. Sump fills only with HVAC condensate, humidifier excess, and ocassional dribble from gas hot water heater. During recent 27 hr pwr failure, all sump related water generating eq was inoperative. Hence, extra protection seems unneeded. Thoughts?

Nice configuration. Access to water for flushing adds a nice touch. I lug water in a bucket. As a new homeowner & DIY Guy, wondering if any advantage to mounting alarm sensors inside sump, to signal you before water hits the floor. Also, wondering how you address radon? Should sump be covered for safety, especially when grands or grand nephews arrive? I lost a nephew 30 years ago after he wandered into his parent's backyard pool.

We have an SJ10 and it works just fine for the three years we've had it but I would like to raise the float level by about an inch. Can this be done without the services of a plumber?

Got a buddy who welds? Cut an inch off the float rod.

I haven't installed my SJ10 yet but noticed that the float switch seems to only operate in a half inch to one inch window. It will be on and off far too frequently instead of just completely draining the pit every few minutes. Do I have a faulty pump or is that how they operate ? Has anyone found a work around for this ? Thanks.

So what if you have a well with an electric pump in the well fo water....ie if the electric goes out the water pressure goes to. Will this pump work?

no it won't unfortunately... If you're using a well you have to stick to battery powered back-up pump or a gasoline/propane generator

      I'm 37, and been a homeowner for 14 years.
I've NEVER lost water from a storm.
Growing up as a kid, never lost water from a storm...
Granted we were in a pretty major metropolitan area though...with city water.
I'd imagine if you had a well, this could be a problem.

I’m 70 never have lost city tap water but I’m concerned if I will be doubling my water bill because I can’t find any information regarding how much water will I be using while pumping out my basin….. would it be 1 to 1 ratio??? If so with what this guy is pumping it would cost me a thousand dollars a year!!!
