It failed at the North American box office, but set an opening-day record in Russia. It grossed $284 million at the worldwide box office, resulting in a $200 million writedown for Disney, becoming one of the biggest box office bombs in history. With a total cost of $350 million, including an estimated production budget of $263 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. At the very least it can still stand on its own. Honestly to many films these days are made expecting to get sequels so they end them with cliffhangers or open threads. This one more or less you can some up he got he what he wanted, will go back to mars and reunite with his bride.

This is the film that awoke me and made me see Disney's true colors. From that day the film came out, and after seeing how poorly it was treated financially and critically, I increasingly began to despise Disney. Although I'm happy that John Carter got removed from the likes of Disney and reverted back to Burroughs to find another studio, to this day, I can't get over it. They had an opportunity to make this into a franchise, based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' beloved science fiction books. A story that inspired great works and even inspired me. This was pure science fiction history, essentially the grandfather of Star Wars, Avatar, Flash Gordon, even SUPERMAN HIMSELF! And this is coming from a person who hasn't read any of the books before, but was introduced the moment I saw that trailer after "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2". They had SO many chances and potential. And they blew it. Not the cast and crew in particular, just how it was presented to the public. They don't put their best minds into something gratifying and unique other than their tired Pixar ripoff CGI films and live action reboots and Marvel films and apparently Star Wars. Because that's what gets them money. I'm not against them for making money (that's obviously the main task for every company), I'm against them for putting that as a priority. If you truly care about your demographic, the fans should be your number ONE priority. Originality and faithfulness to adaptations should be another priority. I really dislike companies that try to appeal to audiences who would most likely not care about what the company publishes or presents. Say what you will about other companies, at least some are owning up to their mistakes and trying to make themselves better. They have hits and misses, but they keep trying no matter what happens to them. Disney doesn't want to do that. Look, I'm not going to act like I know a company well because I don't know what truly goes on behind closed doors. But what I do know is that I see the same routine from them. I noticed how films like John Carter and A Bug's Life gets overlooked. I've noticed how many people weren't so happy when Tron 3 was cancelled and other cancelled films. I've noticed how many people still loved Fantasia or Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I've noticed how many lost gems are still considered timeless to a minority of fans. Apparently, Disney doesn't, from what I'm seeing. So...until they change their ways and go back to what made them great, as far as I'm concerned, I will never ever watch or buy another Disney product from them ever again. I'm boycotting anything that is associated with Disney. It's bad to waste Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Tron and even Treasure Planet. But they've wasted such a golden opportunity. Oh well, obviously they don't care what I think. Or what other people think. Thank you, Disney...for "making movies to make more money."

This movie is great and one of my all-time favorites. TRON and TRON: Legacy, as well. And I agree with you. Disney has disgusting business practices. Yes it is how to make money but art should be a consideration. John Carter was a beautiful movie and the cast, crew, composer, director, and all the creatives involved made a work of art. Disney screwed up the marketing and didn't give it the attention it deserved. Its about the time they landed the deal with Lucas and so they abandoned John Carter. They should have named it John Carter and the Princess of Mars. Or something to that effect, as just A Princess of Mars would give people the wrong idea and most people didn't know who John Carter was on his own as a character. They could also have named it Barsoom. Something mysterious like that would have perked interest. The movie is well done and honorable to the first book. Sure some things are different but every movie adaptation is different. Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit are different, sometimes vastly different than the books. Especially the Hobbit, which was one short book and most of the things in the movies are not in the book. Disney chose to abandon all of their independent scifi movie franchises. John Carter and Tron are the two that hurt me. The cast, crew, director, composer, writers, everyone was back, scripts for movies 2 and 3 were ready and they were ready to film John Carter 2 and 3 named Gods of Mars and Warlord of Mars. And in interviews they were going to be epic. But Disney pulled the plug. TRON: Legacy set up a great story progression and they pulled the plug because another movie Tomorrowland didn't do well financially. I love a lot of Disney but they really piss me off with some of their decisions. At least we get cult classics out of John Carter and TRON. And the way John Carter ended it can be a self contained singular movie. But i wish they went ahead with parts 2 and 3 with the same cast, director (Andrew Stanton), composer, writers, the whole thing.

I am quite certain that John Carter WAS screwed over by the higher-ups at Disney simply because it didn't fit their agenda of acquisitions, pre-existing franchises, and endless spin-offs. Read this article: mayersononanimation.blogspot.com/2013/03/john-carter-and-gods-of-hollywood.html
On another note, some of Disney's greatest classics were actually box office bombs. Yes, films like Bambi, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland! And how is it that we know about them? Walt Disney re-released all these films every decade and represented them in Disneyland! In other words, instead of pushing his failures under the rug, Walt actually allowed generation after generation to be exposed to them, which allowed their reputation to be vindicated with time! The Disney property wouldn't be nearly as strong had Walt treated his failures like how the Disney company of today treats its failures. Disney NEEDS to understand that they have a gold mine of materials like John Carter or Treasure Planet and that these failures have an audience. Instead of looking to outside sources like 21st Century Fox to grow their audience, perhaps Disney should look into their own library and give their underrated gems more exposure. Surely, their corporate synergy would allow more people to be aware of them!

I really liked this movie as well. I quote the Talisman/Amulet incantation to get to Barsoom all the time-like a mantra to keep me centered and focused.
My only regret with film is that they did too much condensing the first three or four of Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter/Barsoomian books ('A Princess of Mars', 'Gods of Mars', 'Warlord of Mars', and Thuvia, Maid of Mars'). Though I'm not sure of the last one because lots and lots of time has gone by for John Carter and Dejah Thoris by the time you get to that book. Anyway, if they had just stuck with the events in 'A Princess of Mars' they would have been just fine-especially that epic ending where "I could hardly breathe!" Trying to be non-spoilery here...
No need for the Therns in this movie; they could have waited to use them in the sequel. And they could have simply stuck with them being 'false gods' like the Goa'uld. No need for them to be like the aliens in Independence Day, the Harvesters.
And they definitely needed to call the movie 'A Princess of Mars' or 'John Carter of Mars' the operative word being MARS, so people would know what the hell the movie was about.
Really, the whole Barsoomian Chronicles should be a series on a streaming service like Game of Thrones or Lost in Space. That's do the story justice.
But I love these characters and am committed to reading all 11 books in the series now!
Guess we'll see what the EBR estate comes up with next now that Disney isn't in the picture...

After so many many years of waiting for John Carter of Mars to finally get the big screen treatment, it was totally worth the long wait!!! Disney crafted a truly fun epic & endlessly entertaining Sci-Fi swashbuckler based on 2 of the greatest stories ever written!!! Unfortunately thanks to the inept shoddy & lazy-a@$ idiots that Disney put in charge of marketing & advertising this great film, it didn't receive the kind of attention & exposure it deserved thus severely hindering it's chances at box office glory & thus consequently killing any & all hope of a sequel or 2 :(
It took dozens of decades for the John Carter of Mars series to finally make it to the big screen only for this more than worthy film adaptation to be unjustly & unfairly overlooked!!! Who knows how many more years we'll have to wait this time for someone to attempt a new John Carter of Mars adaptation :(

nah, time actually flows slightly slower on earth, due to its higher mass..although the difference is too small to be noticeable..the only difference would be in earth years..he was away for 10 earth years, which equal roughly 6 years on mars, but those 6 years actually have pretty much the same duration of the 10 earth years in terms of pure flow of time.

I just told you that it's the same for Mars...they only have the longer year due to the planet being farther from earth, which changes 10 earth years into 6 mars years..but the total amount of time that has passed is exactly the same, actually a bit more on mars, since the lower mass of the planet makes time flow a tiny little bit faster.

To everyone who called this movie a ripoff, you're entirely wrong. The source material was written over a century ago. The Barsoom series has inspired a hundred years of science fiction. Star Wars took from it. Buck Rogers took from it. Doctor Who, Flash Gordon, Star Trek, Superman, Avatar, The Matrix. All of them borrowed elements from the Barsoom series. Andrew Stanton shouldn't have to change the entire source material just to avoid comparisons with other films.

Every bit the story telling as Avatar but thanks to Disney's horrible marketing of it, woefully under appreciated. I don't know of one single friend of mine who has seen it that didn't enjoy the movie so that, in of itself, tells you Disney failed this cast and crew. They couldn't even put "Mars" in the title, what does that tell you about the marketing skills of the suits? And another thing, Lynn was stunning in this movie...that wedding dress was "youza!" lol

100% totally fantastic movie. Only Disney's hack of a marketing/publicity team prevented it from becoming a blockbuster the same way that Prince Of Persia (a video game movie that was finally done right) was also sabotaged by said marketing clowns! Fingers crossed that Disney will continue the series if not with a sequel than in some other format like a animated series like what they're doing right now with Tron.

(Spoiler Warning for the 2nd book if you interested on how the sequel would've began had it adapted to film).
For those who want to know what happens to John after he returns back to Barsoom if the sequel (John Carter: The Gods of Mars) had been made, here's what happens...
Basically, John does return to Barsoom after 10 years but his body doesn't materialise to where it originally was but to the place where nobody can leave: The Valley Dor (AKA the Barsoomian afterlife). He also finds Tars Tarkas who has taken pilgrimage to the Valley Dor to find Carter. So yay! In the first few minutes we would've gotten more fun banter and engaging moments with Taylor Kitsch and Willem Dafoe.
Shame we'll never see it. 😢
At least we still have this awesome movie. 😀
