I work as a bartender and I always have baseball games on my TVs. I saw this live and thought I was going crazy because none of the patrons at the bar caught it and everyone thought I was nuts for saying he got pitched after three strikes... Thank you for this vindication!

Okay, I can understand one umpire losing the count. I've had it happen to me more than once. However, I have never had my partner lose it at the same time. NEVER. And that's just one guy. How in the hell do all FOUR of them lose it? Do they even carry indicators anymore?

Jon Bois did a funny video about a bunch of 3 ball walks, 2-strike strikeouts and whatnot, many of which hardly anyone noticed. I forget how many non-strikeout strike 3s were listed but it's fun to add one more. It really does fascinate me how something that can be this important goes unnoticed by so many people but sometimes the flow of the game can mess with everyone's head.
I was in Houston for work and just decided to go to this game last second. This game really had a lot of cool stuff going for it: Mancini’s first hit/HR as an Astro, Red Sox players giving Vasquez hugs before their at-bats, and even a four strike at bat. Never know what you’re going to see at the ballpark.

the saddest part about this, is if the ump knew the count was 1-2, he would've called it a ball. when the count is 0-2, the strike zone shrinks, when the count is 3-0, the strike zone expands.
Depending on where you are sitting, it can be hard to know the count. I’ve seen enough wrong scoreboards on pitch counts live to always look for the umps call on an out. The ump didn’t call him out so most of the crowd at a live game didn’t notice.
It doesn't happen often, but it's hilarious when it does. I've also seen a 3-ball walk where nobody objected. This was a while ago when TiVo was still a thing, and I rewound that at-bat several times to make sure I wasn't imagining things lol

Well, praising his ball/strike accuracy and willingness to admit a bad call, which isn't exactly the same as forgetting the count. My rule of thumb: if the pitcher himself and the pitcher's manager didn't notice, you (the ump) still screwed up, but it's forgivable.
Both of their numbers are 44 the Astros had 4 runs and Hill’s pitch count was in the 40s here. That ump’s mind was in a pretzel. I don’t blame him or anyone there for that matter to get the count wrong here.

The radio broadcasters pick up on it but the TV guys don't. It's almost like a test, like the Raiders giving JaMarcus Russell blank tapes to see if he actually watched them. What did the scoreboard operator do? Like he would obviously increment the strikes when the ump signaled but then he would know it's strike 3 but he can't alert the ump in any way and he also would fear that maybe he had the count wrong earlier. Or maybe he had missed a strike earlier on and everyone was staring at the scoreboard? Rich Hill has that borderline psycho "baseball is super serious business" demeanor on the field but he didn't know he had struck the guy out. That's pretty hilarious. I figure someone like Greg Maddux would have known.

They’re always paying attention, good ones will break down baseball info like Jomboy does, simplifying things but not condescending and letting you get into the nuance of the game. I’m surprised more arent recruited for coaching. P.S. I currently hate my Nationals, but “Charlie and Dave” the radio crew are the best in the business.
The other day in the Yankee game this happened I forget what game it was maybe against Seattle I think, but it was a 1-2 count and a strike was called nothing and what’s also weird is the 3rd strike didn’t even get counted on the pitch count. Just stayed at 41
