Brazilians mostly don't cultivate what english speakers call "Kale", so he probably doesn't know the distinction. We simplify calling collard greens "Couve" (which is really called Couve-Manteiga in Brazil) so he just tried to translate it, it's wrong as you said, but it's more confusing than the east and west mistake.

It literally translates to " All of the mines " or "general mines". In portuguese language It sounds very odd and weird like there is many other references that are quite funny in brazillian culture. Because in the past history of Brazil's discovery that area had an extensive extraction of gold ore diamonds crystals iron and everything else relates to minerals and metals soo they named the state after it.
The state of Minas Gerais has landscapes very similar to the landscapes of the Lord of the Rings. It is the Brazilian state that has the most mountains!
Lisa Jones praça da liberdade is a great place. My university is just next to it. A really good place to spend some time. And the liberty palace is there as well, a beautiful palace from (I believe) the XIX century. The inside is just gorgeous.
