Thank you for making this! I am one of those people who had no idea this was a thing. The game has a serious lack of button prompts and tutorials. I even had no idea I was able to hold E to exit the cockpit when in space
I feel like devs can't win with this. If the game tries to explain everything, people complain that the game is holding your hand too much. And if it doesn't, people complain about lack of information.
@@ciri151 Don’t see why people would want to figure out controls for a game. Puzzle solving and exploration sure, keep it to a minimal if possible or have options. But for controls it seems like a must to have them explained or at least an option to opt in/out of tutorials
Holding E is maddening for me. You press E when you want to select a ship and I get out of the cockpit every time! It was the same thing in Fallout 4. The same key for both bash and throw a grenade!
You're not alone Gopher, I thought the thruster skill just did something with the boost too and figured it was relatively pointless. This looks like it will make space combat easier and more fun especially when dealing with annoying ships that get behind my lumbering behemoth of a ship. I wonder how many more mechanics Starfield has that I've completely failed to notice lol.
I found it by complete accident. Actually the spaceflight of this game reminded me of Freelancer and I was just thinking "I miss the enginekill feature of that game, it made combat easier" then at some point I tried using thrusters to dodge only to realize I was turning without changing momentum, which is exactly how engine kill worked in freelancer.
I wrote a reddit article about this the other day because I have been using it to kill the legendary battleship enemies by strafe running them rather than flying at them. The AI has a harder time hitting targets flying past them at full speed than targets flying at them. You'd be surprised how many people hadn't realized they could do this. This can be particularly powerful if you get used to dumb firing missile weapons outside lock range and can land skill shots. I've done entire fights against multiple enemies where I baited them around and flung missiles at them from outside their range and the first legendary ship I killed the Eclipse Battleship Cumulus I did by strafing at around 1700 meters and basically bombing it while it struggled to keep up. EDIT: Also a note this video is marked as "Space Engineers" rather than "Starfield"
I can guarantee you gopher , majority of the people who played this game did not know about it. I myself know several 100 people whow have 160hrs plus in game time had no idea of this mechanic. Thanks for showing this man.
Thanks for the tip, basically the ship keeps momentum, somewhat like flight assist off in Elite. Its great they put this in for when mods will hopefully use these mechanics.
Exactly. I mean, that should be it's own button in my opinion, and the maneuver thruster should have the option to be on completely different keys/controls.
I remember seeing another video where someone compared the spaceflight to Elite and was really confused what he was talking about, but now I get it. Considering spaceflight has this Newtonian model a lot of interesting things could have been done with it like making it toggleable, but I'm guessing Bethesda probably felt limited by the amount of possible inputs on the xbox controller.
Exactly, this is my main hope for the game: someone makes a mod with the integrated flight model where you can control the thrusters without losing control of the main engines or roll. So a mod that upgrades 4DoF to 6Dof.
I watched an advanced combat video a few days ago and learned about it, but your in depth description really helped! Most of my practice with space combat was trying desperately to survive attacks so I never really had a chance to fiddle with stuff
This is great, I had no idea how to work the thrusters. I was going to turn my ship into a doughnut shape to (supposedly) help with combat but now I will attempt this first
THANK YOU!! there are so many content creators out there that just think rank 1 of ship piloting just makes you more maneuverable and dont say ANYTHING about the thrusters. I am continually trying to commit on those videos trying to tell people about the thruster. Thanks for giving out the correct info!
The fly backwards and shooting is a common practice in other space sim games like elite dangerous and star citizen...problem is by the time it occurred to me you can do it in Starfield, I had already built my turret boat.
Thank you! I was the exact same thinking the thrusters meant boost. I actually had no idea there was even a key binding to toggle Thrusters, I would have expected that key to be displayed on the ship HUD.
I don't have this game, and I won't be getting it for a while. I always click on these videos thinking its the next episode of the LP, and then stay for the whole thing because I could listen to you talk about paint dry and still be entertained! Thank you for all the quality content, and glad you are having fun!
First time I read the skill I basically said the same thing you did in your lets play. Aren't I already using thrusters? I knew of the alternate flight mode from the keybinds, couldn't figure it out forever. Eventually saw a comment few days after early access about it being tied to the pilot skill. It's worded bad, should mention alternate flight mode. At least that would lead people to test out that alternate flight mode or something. Some of the skills have that I'm explaining it as if you already know how it works thing. You know, the whole explain how to make a sandwich experiment and people leave out an absurd about of information so you end up just with some bread on jars of jam/jelly or something.
Its a great boon to firefights, you'll be able to mess with enemy tracking if you strafe, particle/laser/ballistics will all fire wide of you I'd say about 3/4s of the time if you are strafing(with exception of rank 6 in the combat sim.... I think they get perks or something that ups their tracking or maybe its "turrets" instead of pilot aim?) missles will still hit you more consistency, boost seems the most reliable way to avoid them but a short boost and return to drift is enough to disengage the lock I do miss having lateral movement bound to Q and E like I had with my Elite setup but the spacebar press works well enough, mouse looking will also use your thrusters, you do not have to use WASD or can use them in conjunction other things of note, ramming does do damage, your target seems to take more than you do when ramming too but be aware your own missles will do splash damage at close range too you, not sure about other weapon types finally... Bathesda should change EM weapons challenges too subsystems disabled instead of damage done..., those weapons do 1 per hit damage for the challenge which is redicolous
If anyone has played "Space Engineers", this system is the same as turning off the "Dampeners" in that game; basically uncoupling your ship oriantatuion from direction of travel and disabling automatic braking.
I came into this video thinking "Yeah, I already know this, but let's see what he missed this time". I'm coming out of it with my mind blown, literal game changer. I had been avoiding space combat because it was frustrating compared to other space fight sims I've tried (and never really gotten on with), but I can't wait to finish work now and give this a go. Thanks :)
This is amazing. I came to the same original conclusion you did - that it was for adjusting your position to dock or something, and was just a leftover mechanic they forgot to scrap.
I kind of knew this but thought yeah its like a docking thing back from when you probably had to dock before they just made it easier, can't wait to try this now! My X4 space strafing senses are tingling and my turning down difficulty when I get in my cockpit shame will probably be thanking you profusely for this video
Nope, you're not an idiot; MANY of us out there had no idea of the use of the thrusters... seeing this video and others has been a true godsend... I'm a high-90's level who hasn't done any of the Main Quest, just adventuring etc. all the time... I just started finding Legendary (!!) level ships and now have been able to beat them with the help of drifting and other tip! Thanks for the video!
I got 3 ranks in the piloting skill and I didn't know what thrusters were until I watched your latest episode and remembered to look it up, I wish they had paid more attention to skill description.
This game has good bones, in the crafting, exploration, space flight, combat. But the quality of life is absolutely bad. Quest writing, voice acting, skill descriptions, tutorials. I plan to get this game eventually, but I really don't want to pay full price for it. :D
The booster is also very useful in combat: as soon as you hear the sound telling you a missile locked you, activating the booster for just a second (I stop it by briefly activate the thrusters, in other word i just press shift then space) get rid of the missile.
No, I had no idea! It's also what prevented me from getting the first Pilot skill and I had over 24 hours of gameplay in the game already! So huge thanks for this! Also, I know you probably know this already, but there's a way to easily upgrade your ship without making it complicated by just hitting the upgrade button. That way your ship is still relatively the same without having to do a check on if your ship is flyable or not.
Nice demonstration and it's very cool that they implemented this in Starfield. This seems very logical, but personally, I rarely see this type of maneuver in space combat. Accounting for the lack of atmosphere, inertia is an important factor and when you use it effectively it can be pretty cool.
I got the perk by accident, because i thought it was the perk to get better ship parts, but turns out it wasn't a waste of a perk after all. This is awesome, and i had zero idea about it before now.
Thank you for this. Knew I got thrusters, no idea what that button even was, basically got decent at space combat through brute force (and lots of target lock)
this is a game changer. thank you for it! I don't think this is well spread knowledge. I've been watching a bunch things related to tips and tricks, and haven't seen anyone talking about that yet. But what really excites me is the new layer of mastering this mechanic provides.
Like you, I was totally unaware of this feature, and as a result of watching this video I searched the key binds. The game lists the Thrusters as 'Switch Flight Mode' just to confuse some of us even more! lol Well off to try out this 'new' feature; thank you very much for this.
Thank you for this, it will be a game changer for me I'm sure. I've been dying a lot in space battles and thought, "There has to be something I'm missing here." Seems like this is that something.
I would honestly say it needs to be called something else to make it clearer. As it pertains to what looks like RCS on the sides of the ship as well as the ability to maintain velocity after a maneuver, which are pretty different things attached to the same skill that only states "You can now utilize ship thrusters" Maybe have it state something like: "You can now override flight assists"
Way back in Wing Commander or X-Wing & TIE fighter, Freelancer, Starlancer and some other space games, this was called 'sliding' or 'combat turning'. Then space sims died out for a bit, and this combat maneuver was largely forgotten in the newer, dumbed-down space sim games. Glad to see it come back. Heartily agree; the description of "you can now utilize thrusters' was severely lacking.
In recent times I think I have only really seen what iirc is referred to as 'Newtonian flight model' is in Star Citizen and Space Engineers. Though I come from a big of chunk of time on KSP so I feel the lack of remotely correct spaceflight bigtime lol@@eugenen.griffiths8335
Thank you! I saw in another video if you boost while turning then hit your thruster button at full speed and turn around, you can go top speed backwards.
Was watching a different video and saw them turn around full speed reversing shooting behind them... no explanation! Really glad I found your video, this will be a game changer!
Thank you, Gopher! I am on keyboard and mouse as well and I have been clueless as to how to fly despite the "brilliant" (heavy sarcasm intended) flight tutorial. I also find the default key bindings extremely challenging for my arthritic hands to manage and have been struggling for alternate key binding solutions. I know you cannot help there because we do not use the same style keyboard.
Thanks for this gopher, I had no idea how to use the thrusters and had exactly the same problem as you in combat, the enemy was running rings around me all the while shooting at me and I was playing a game of catch me up and getting spanked at the same time,
Thanks for the advice! :) I just finished my Starfield playthrough, and it never occurred to me to actually try drifting with the thrusters. I tried the thrusters once whilst stationary, also thought they were just for fine movement control, and I never used them again. I got pretty good at maneuvering and fighting without them, but now that I know their real capabilities... This is a game-changer.
Try this, aggro enemies then fly away at a top speed, hold spacebar for flight controls and rotate your ship to face behind yourself, you can now shoot as you run away, and its useful with long range ships with particle beam and missiles.
I learned something too. Just like you, I took the first rank in piloting and had no idea what thrusters did or how to use them. I was about to Google it but your video gave me the answer before I even started digging. Thanks!
Thank you for this Gopher. I'm one of the people like you who had zero idea what it meant by Thrusters and had been looking for ways to skip the ship combat because I was constantly frustrated by the slow turning while being chased down by three ships. I now know what I'm spending my next skill point on.
I play this with a Joystick and Thrustmaster and let me tell you it just works. This is the most fun that I've had since X-Wing, Tie Fighter and Wing Commander. One thing that I noticed when using my Thrustmaster. When I set Thrust forward and hold it there, the ship will go as fast as possible, even while turning. If I apply max thrust, then bring the throttle back to neutral, the ship will still keep max thrust until I start turning at which point the engines will autopower down to "max turn" speed and then when I am flying straight it will power up to max thrust. That way you set it and forget it for a fight. Potentially.
Great tips. I had no idea how versatile the thruster system was. I'd only been using it for minor flight adjustments and hadn't thought of this application.
Thank you for the video, it's a useful feature that would be easy to miss. On that note, another thing I've seen many people miss (including you actually) is that you can focus the beam of the mining laser to mine a lot faster. You hold right mouse button for a second or two (you will see it focus in on the crosshair) and then you mine away 😉
Revolutionary. I unlocked them and tried the left stick, and was like "strafe, okay, I guess somebody might find that useful somehow". I never tried the right stick! You've saved my life.
I also had no idea about this. I was wondering why space flight seemed so terrible, not even realizing that there was some kind of flight assist stopping forward momentum after turning the engines off, because that's not the way space is supposed to work.
Very nice tutorial. Thank you for that. I keep wondering how many interesting things this game has. This feature is physically very correct, because in space you don't have air or road to stop you, so if you turn engines off you keep flying the same direction and thrusters just let you turn your ship keeping the same direction.
I learned about this from watching a short, though he never explained how to do it. I found it by accident after jumping into a planet and being attacked by bounty hunters. Trying to hit alt and redirecting power from the grav drive to weapons or shields I hit space by mistake and yeah... game changer.
Did not figure that out. Had the same experience. Played with it, but assumed it was for landing or docking. Didn't really think about it again, until now. Thanks for the tip!
I just started playing with this feature out of combat for the moment. Passing space stations and stuff. Time to hit the MAST piloting sim again. Project Sypheed on the 360 had such feature, but at the cost of engine overheating. Which doesn't make sense, but it's there to limit such powerful ability.
Didn't know this, thank you very much! This is the first thing I wish would be possible when I started. And I did though the perk is the boost as i started with it.
Great video, well explained and your defo right - Thrust is a Must! Im going to ask this on your channel because you sound like an informed guy but dont feel bad if you dont know as most ppl that answer this tell me 'Im using thruster mode' but its definately not that! I love thrusters, its what makes it space flight!!! So heres ny question: Ive entered into an UNLISTED FLIGHT MODE, as far as I can tell since Bethesda hasnt mentioned it or put it in help section, but I know its real because Ive accidentally entered into it on several occasions but I cant figure out what key presses are doing it but ITS PART OF FREELOOK BUT MUCH DIFFERENT AS IT ALLOWS YOU TO MANUEVER/STEER YOUR SHIP WITHOUT A HUD! This makes aiming difficult as you can imagine but it very cinematic (as Ive seen a few youtubers use it, see below!) and its a great challenge! If you can help me then you dont need any of this info but Im gonna post it for all others that may see this! Freelook is the ability to go into a NO HUD view. It can be done in 1st or 3rd person, but you normally are ONLY ABLE TO CONTROL CAMERA MOVEMENT! IM TRYIN TO ENTER I TO FREELOOK W/ SHIP MOVEMENT CONTROL AGAIN... See help section under ship control for more info on freelook... (Hold down on 'toggle pov' keybind - Q on PC and the share button left of Xbox button on controller) Im going to leave a link to a video that show exactly what Im talking about. Look for parts where there is NO HUD. I would say it was editing magic IF I HADNT ALREADY DONE THIS MYSELF! th-cam.com/video/28nzVWf-RsY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zwHJVGj9cSmWYlw6 Jump to around 2:53 for the 3rd person as well as the very beggining for the 1st person, in cockpit NO HUD mode where you can go full immersion by using only the actual ship MFD (multi function displays). Anyway, sorry for the long spiel and the posting of some else video but Ive posted this question in various other places but Ive gotten no answers beside the nice ppl that said I was using thrusters mode. If you know, then Id crap myself in appreciation 💩👀 Realky good video though! I suprized were not hearing more about this kind of stuff. Apologies if some grammatical issues, I threw this down too quickly! I hope it makes sense!!!
Just found your channel and subscribed. Awesome stuff. I mentioned this a while back on another channel and was hoping someone would get slick with this ability. On top of this, holding the view button will snap to a free view spin camera. This changes slightly along with system maneuver and weapons function depending on whether you have a target selected or not. It’s a cool way to check or track targets on your 6. Now I’m not good at this at all, but the day someone mixes this with what you have displayed here, they will be a beast in space. Catch a smile out there.
Yeah this is pretty cool. They had the same thing in Elite Dangerous, it was essentially disengaging the auto pilot, I forget exactly what its called but it makes for some sick space battles, you can just flip around when you're being chased. I only wish that there was a way to make the thrusters more powerful so the flip happens very fast.
Im not sure how I did it but until earlier today I though lvl 1 Piloting was just a weaker version of lvl 2. I read an article, but that didn't help, then I found your video. Thank you for clearing it up, I just cleaned up a trio like it was nothing. 3 ships has always been pretty much run away protocol.
Yep... just assumed the thruster skill did stuff automatically, and help you turn tighter... i was not aware of this ability 😁 Going to see if i can rebind this somehow so its easier to use.
Took me a while to work this out as I'm use to a much better system of using the mouse wheel for speed up/down, (mouse movement for steering) Q/E for rolling, and WASD for "thrusts" --- none of this key switching stuff they have in starfield. Really wish I could change the keys, Yes I'm a keyboard player.
Oh my god. I knew about thrusters and how to activate them, but didn’t see the point. Thank you I understand now, will definitely help in combat manoeuvres

On the NASA Shuttle and on the USS Enterprise it is called RCS Thrusters (Reaction Control System).
Always great info. Thanks for all you do and for the great content!
I just finished my Starfield playthrough, and it never occurred to me to actually try drifting with the thrusters.
Thanks!
2 months ago you made a video on this... and today I found out why the crap I've been terrible at this game for 2 months! Thank you!
Gopher I love you. This is a literal game changer.
What joystick you use man? Thanks
So that's what pilot rank 1 is for. This is going to make space fights so much easier!
Thank you!
Great tips. I had no idea how versatile the thruster system was. I'd only been using it for minor flight adjustments and hadn't thought of this application.
Thank you! I had heeard about the thrusters but never understood now this changes everything
Holy! I had zero idea this was even a thing. Thank you so much for explaining it clearly for me.
When I first started playing this game, I hated ship combat, but I didn't understand thrusters. Once I figured out thrusters, I love ship combat!
So then my question is if I install more thrusters, will they make me faster in drifting?
I have over 200 hours in this game and had no idea this was a thing! Thank you Gopher! This is why your my favorite Bethesda guy.
Now this makes sense. Thank you and have a great day.
This is incredible! Thank you for sharing!
Holy cow this really is an absolute game changer. I can’t wait to try this out later
Best explanation and tutorial ive seen! Ace Combat eat your heart out! Thank you
I've been playing since it was open in early access, and had no idea this was a thing. Thank you!
Did not figure that out. Had the same experience. Played with it, but assumed it was for landing or docking. Didn't really think about it again, until now. Thanks for the tip!
You're a God!!! Thaught me to Mod Skyrim 10 years ago and now the thrusters .... thank you papa Gopher 😅
Took me a good long while to figure out too, I died .. a lot and only realised when I held thrusters while boosting
I definitely hadn't realized this either. Thank you!
Thank you! I SUCK at space combat so will give this a try.
i knew about the thrusters but i didnt know they were so freaking useful, thank you
This is gold. I am also a member of the incredibly dense club, it seems. Thanks for sharing.
Oh actually didnt know thag you could keep the momentum and drift. Good to know
I just started playing with this feature out of combat for the moment. Passing space stations and stuff. Time to hit the MAST piloting sim again. Project Sypheed on the 360 had such feature, but at the cost of engine overheating. Which doesn't make sense, but it's there to limit such powerful ability.
I almost left this video before the drifting advice - thank you!
Didn't know this, thank you very much!
This is the first thing I wish would be possible when I started. And I did though the perk is the boost as i started with it.
Another commonly missed spaceflight tip is that the white bar in the middle of the thrust bar represents where you have max maneuverability.
Is that what that means?? Wow
Bloody awesome, mate! I wasn’t aware how the thrusters work...
(Hold down on 'toggle pov' keybind - Q on PC and the share button left of Xbox button on controller)
Im going to leave a link to a video that show exactly what Im talking about. Look for parts where there is NO HUD. I would say it was editing magic IF I HADNT ALREADY DONE THIS MYSELF!
th-cam.com/video/28nzVWf-RsY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=zwHJVGj9cSmWYlw6
Jump to around 2:53 for the 3rd person as well as the very beggining for the 1st person, in cockpit NO HUD mode where you can go full immersion by using only the actual ship MFD (multi function displays).
Anyway, sorry for the long spiel and the posting of some else video but Ive posted this question in various other places but Ive gotten no answers beside the nice ppl that said I was using thrusters mode.
If you know, then Id crap myself in appreciation 💩👀
Realky good video though! I suprized were not hearing more about this kind of stuff.
Apologies if some grammatical issues, I threw this down too quickly! I hope it makes sense!!!
WOW, way too dang long too! gheeez
Had no idea you could do this either. Thanks for sharing!
I did not either... thanks for the video - nicely done!
Thank you! You're definitely not the only one who didn't know this.
Omg! I had no idea about this. Thank you Gopher! This will help me so much!
Yep... just assumed the thruster skill did stuff automatically, and help you turn tighter... i was not aware of this ability 😁
Going to see if i can rebind this somehow so its easier to use.
Thank you good sir.
This was exactly the tip I was looking for 😊
I made the exact same mistake as you. I can't wait to jump back on and clear out some spacer scum.
OMG...thank you, thank you. LOL. I needed this in my Starfield life.
Took me a while to work this out as I'm use to a much better system of using the mouse wheel for speed up/down, (mouse movement for steering) Q/E for rolling, and WASD for "thrusts" --- none of this key switching stuff they have in starfield. Really wish I could change the keys,
Yes I'm a keyboard player.
Oh my god. I knew about thrusters and how to activate them, but didn’t see the point. Thank you I understand now, will definitely help in combat manoeuvres
