The funk influence comes from guitarist and co-writer Carlos Alomar who was one of James Brown's former band members. This song is based on an arrangement he worked out for Bowie's cover of The Flares' "Foot Stomping". James Brown later lifted the riff for his song "Hot (I Need To Be Loved)".

Little story for y'all. Back when I was a teen in the 70's I loved roller skating, so would go every Friday and Saturday night to the local rink. I would often get in for free by helping the bands (they often had live music) set up. There were two songs you could count on being played every time you went. This, and "Last Child" by Aerosmith. Every time I hear either of those songs I am 16 again, my long blonde hair in my face because I am skating backwards fast and swaying in time to the bop. Good times......
Bowie was great, BUT he screwed over one of the greatest guitarists around when they recorded "Let's Dance". He gave SRV no credit and took him out of the video when the guitar solo happened and Bowie was wearing the white gloves. SRV never forgave him and I can't blame him. Maybe a little of that "Fame" got to Bowie. Don't try to compare Lennon to SRV in guitar ability. That ain't happening.
@surfitlive Gaga is an original artist, but she wears ALL her inspirations out in the open. Bowie and his multiple music identities have to be an influence.
The story is that they recorded parts of this song with John Lennon singing on a train moving past the microphone at 60 mph, and that’s how they got the Doppler effect.
I was hitting the dance bars a lot when this was released in the 70's (arggh...ok they were disco bars) and this song would bring down the house, dance floor was packed. And those places played the music LOUD. I mean, really really LOUD. And this song sounded great loud, you couldn't sit still listing to it. Same with Let's Dance, China Girl, etc. Bowie really got what the mid 70's music audience wanted and cranked out a lot of hits.
1975, when Bowie was so funky he even appeared in person on "Soul Train." Of course, he was just copying the US funk artists he was obsessed with at the time, but still, he was good at it.
Which is why David Bowie recorded the Young Americans album at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, PA. David wanted to capture some of the Philly sound that was going on at the time. The song Fame would be David Bowie's first #1 hit on the Billboard Charts.
In case no-one mentioned it in the many comments, John Lennon pushed David to do this song and sings harmony in it. I've listened to this this song since it came out in the mid 70's and had no clue john lennon is singing on it until Alan Cross did a radio tribute upon bowie's death.
My first time seeing David Bowie on TV when performed Fame on Soul Train. I think it took most people by surprise including myself. That's what made even more cool. Great reaction brother Jamal ✊🏾👍🏾

Boy oh boy! This was HUGE in my high school years. In our bell bottoms and platform shoes we loved dancing The Bump to this hit. Bowie was an instant classic when he appeared on the scene. Miss him to this day.
Been away for some time. This is one of my favorite artists... his last song: Black Star: he loved some serious soul. Went on soul train... never acted like someone who he wasn’t. Authenticity to its core. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Come on now who doesn't know "The Thin White Duke" David Bowie He was the first major rock star I got an autograph from when I lived in Cleveland going to the Agora club where he played piano when he toured with Iggy Pop..
I agree with Bowie. He could sing, no doubt. He was a unique performer and tremendous talent. As an artist, he was the great chameleon. He could be whatever he wanted, often inspired by his surroundings. A great, pure singing voice? Not really. Doesn’t matter. He made the most of all he had. We should all try to work so hard.
Bowie was an amazing performer - like a living piece of art. However, I agree with him on the vocal aspect. If you look at vocal ability compared to Freddie Mercury, Bryan Ferry, Robert Plant, Brian Johnson, Mike Patton, Chris Cornell, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, etc, then it's apparent that Bowie's voice wasn't particularly outstanding or powerful. It was Bowies' look, personality, his sense of fashion/style, and a love of being a character performer. Almost like a stageshow or playi instead of concert. I know people will disagree - that's cool.
Please check out any or all of these Bowie tunes: “Stay”, “Fashion” “Young Americans” or “Let’s Dance”. I think that these are all ones that you might enjoy.
vonny b HA! I was gonna say xxxactly the same. “ Took his babies, took her nowhere...” I LOVE his goodbye album with his studio jazz guys jammin. It’s so beautiful, and he’s facing the end of his life consciously, and gave us those songs with images of him as a dark star in the heavens. That’s wonderful . So generous.
David Bowie was so awesome. Married to a beautiful lady, gorgeous kids, wonderful voice and loved everybody. No Hate, No prejudice, No judgement. Just David. I so miss him being in this world....
Jamal. Always keep this in your mind listening to most bands from England and the 60s and 70s that their musical influence came from the United States south, black musicians, from 20s through the 70s. David Bowie himself had a muse in the black south that he could go and see to get musical direction. This particular fit he would see would always have a riff or chorus to play for Bowie. He would pay them handsomely and change it just enough to attract white people as well the black influence of southern usa. You are so fun to watch reactions. Good luck with red rooster thing you are doing.

Every time I hear either of those songs I am 16 again, my long blonde hair in my face because I am skating backwards fast and swaying in time to the bop. Good times......
I always liked his "Let's Dance"
DeAnna Anton and Modern Love.
Yeah, and Stevie Ray Vaughan played guitar on that song. ❤️
@@laurakali6522 Yes, but don't bother with Blue Jean...
Steve Christy I agree.
John Lennon co-wrote this song, and also plays electric guitar on it (distorted riff) .. as well as background vocals
I’m surprised the song didn’t credit him. Like MJ’s The Girl Is Mine has (with Paul McCartney). Why is that? Cuz John Lennon’s voice is quite minimal.
This song was so ahead of it's time -- still sounds amazing.
THIS WAS THE 1970s Baby
1975 BABY
Nobody was ahead of their time. There were just too many people who refused to move WITH the time
"Fame" got David Bowie on Soul Train!!!! Look for that!!!
@surfitlive Gaga is an original artist, but she wears ALL her inspirations out in the open. Bowie and his multiple music identities have to be an influence.
And the Little Drummer Boy got him a duet with Bing Crosby - th-cam.com/video/n9kfdEyV3RQ/w-d-xo.html
Love everything Bowie! Try Changes. It has a message that means more to me the older I get and look back
The story is that they recorded parts of this song with John Lennon singing on a train moving past the microphone at 60 mph, and that’s how they got the Doppler effect.
the back vocal on this is John Lennon
Doing great Bowie songs will keep you busy for some time Jamal..keep it going!!!
Elton John.
I was 6 years old when this came out. Those were the days when every genre of music was on the one AM radio station.
I was 8 years old at the time. My mother loved this song. I remember her bringing home the 45...
loved funk: "Tell me something Good" by Rufus. "It's Your Thing" - Isley Brothers.
Jamel in 1975 when FAME Came out Us 70s Brats were DANCING OUR ASSES Of to Fame ,
parliament/funkadelic...george clinton...so many great funk stars!!
You must do Modern Love- You will know that one.
David Bowie and Bing Crosby singing Little Drummer Boy on Bing’s Christmas special. So interesting to see those two together.
@Scott Olson - always thought their version of this song was the prettiest I ever heard. And , yes an
(cont)very interesting for them to pair up.
In case no-one mentioned it in the many comments, John Lennon pushed David to do this song and sings harmony in it. I've listened to this this song since it came out in the mid 70's and had no clue john lennon is singing on it until Alan Cross did a radio tribute upon bowie's death.
David Bowie was amazing. So much amazing art that man created.
My first time seeing David Bowie on TV when performed Fame on Soul Train. I think it took most people by surprise including myself. That's what made even more cool. Great reaction brother Jamal ✊🏾👍🏾
Bowie '76 to '82 was untouchable. Whatever was fuelling his creativity, and that's well documented, brought him and his music to unprecedented highs.
I was almost afraid you were going to pass out from sheer BLISS!!
Love seeing you enjoy the funk!
Jamel can you make a t shirt saying "y'all done did it now!"
Pleeeease? 😊
Also can you believe this song is 45 years old?????
Excellent-- I want one, too!
You hit it on the head. “There is a difference between hearing a song vs really listening to it.” I have been really listening to songs I’ve heard my whole life with you today and it has been a surprising joy ❤️
When this song came out in the mid 70's. I thought this is the pinnacle of music. Cannot get any better than this!
David Bowie is probably the coolest dude who ever lived lol!!!
^^ this!
I think Prince might have a lil sumn sumn to say about that.😊 lol
You right my sista.
@@wrutledge1 Prince was a "Johnny-come-lately" compared with Mr Bowie LOL.
@@wrutledge1 Prince was undoubtedly a dude, but Bowie was so cool that he managed to make being David Bowie cool.
Dude, I love watching you listen to great music! Super joyful, Brother Jamel. Thank you. 🙏🏾
I love the way they played with sound on this track. Even the vocals just broken down into repeating sound bites. Genius.
Wow, you're just cranking out the hots today. Bowie was so unconventional and innovative. Seen him in 75', and he sure put on a great show. Love your reaction. Thanks!❤🤘
Funky Soul Music 💙❤️💙 my favorite is a song called Let's Dance"
Bowie, so ethereal! He's not dead he just went home! Bright amongst the stars!
Thanks, Jamel. Miss this man so much.
Brother Jamel getting stank faced. Stank steppin'. Love it!
Wow, Thanks for putting a big smile on my face this morning. I remember dancing around my parents living room as a kid when this came out. Awesome
Come on now who doesn't know "The Thin White Duke" David Bowie He was the first major rock star I got an autograph from when I lived in Cleveland going to the Agora club where he played piano when he toured with Iggy Pop..
To think, Bowie often said that he didn't consider himself to be a great vocalist. The genius fool.
I know you don't mean the fool as a bad thing but that just shows you how humble he was.
One of the true unique inimitable voice in all of pop.

Jamal, your reactions are priceless.
I can tell when the music hits you,
Fingers pop and OOOOOOOOOH.
That’s what it’s all about.
Bowie has SO MANY styles and personae. Such is his genius!
Trust us old guys when we request a song. We know what we’re doing. I enjoy your channel, keep ‘em coming.
Bowie and Bing Crosby singing Little Drummer Boy on Bing's Christmas show back in the early 70's. It's one of the prettiest songs ever.
If you ever get around to Bowie's song "let's dance", see if you recognize the guitarist who plays the last solo.
Let's Dance definitely!!! Bowie is another rabbit hole. He has a lot of classic tunes
A guess. Adrian Belew.
He "stole him from Frank Zappa.
Please check out any or all of these Bowie tunes: “Stay”, “Fashion” “Young Americans” or “Let’s Dance”.
I think that these are all ones that you might enjoy.
Love them all love them all love them all!!!💖😘😘💖 and of course let's dance...Young Americans my favorite
Definitely "Young American." All night!
Yes and let’s do some early Bowie as well.... “Moonage Daydream” and “The man who sold the world”
Remember, “Let’s Dance” is where Stevie Ray Vaughn got introduced to the world.
David Bowie was so awesome. Married to a beautiful lady, gorgeous kids, wonderful voice and loved everybody. No Hate, No prejudice, No judgement. Just David. I so miss him being in this world....
You gotta check out Freddie Mercury's collab with David Bowie: Under Pressure, Brother Jamel! Keep on keeping great music alive!

Just so you know, John Lennon, from the Beatles is on backing vocals on this song. I believe he is co writer on the song.
