"Musical chameleon" is right. After touring with Nine Inch Nails and hearing their sound, Bowie and Brian Eno - a longtime collaborator of his on songwriting - came up with "I'm Afraid of Americans," a song so much in Trent Reznor's NIN style that when Trent remixed it for the US single release, the end result REAAAALLY wasn't far off from the studio version. I love these reactions, it's so fun to see someone really get into it. His voice is so incredible, and in the mid to late '70s he had a band with a monster of a rhythm section. The grooves in Station to Station are just brilliant.
I'm 58 yrs. old, took early retirement, walk with my head held high, could not care less what people think of me...and dance like a crazy person to songs like these before I go to bed. Never been happier. Maybe these are my 'Golden Years'!
Hearing his records is a mere whiff of his intensity as a live performer - I first experienced Bowie live on his "Serious Moonlight " tour in '83-'84 which started me on a life long quest to experience him as often as I could - I lost track of my live Bowie concerts at 25 or 26 times, the last being the "Reality" tour in Atlanta, GA in 2004 - the single most exciting live performer I've ever witnessed (and I've seen hundreds, if not a thousand live concerts in my lifetime) Ultra talent is correct - never been anything like him before or since - so sad that he is gone - I was lucky enough to witness his superb talents many times
The original title for this was gonna be "Some Walkin' Down The Street Music In The Shaft Movie," but David decided to shorten it to "Golden Years." I happen to like both titles.
@HardNews TV4 They actually had a dispute about the live tour "Serious Moonlight Tour". They shouldn't have worked together in the first place, two big egos.
It's fantastic watching someone discover a Legend! Absolutely amazing voice, this is my all time favourite song! Don't forget the special eyes - gorgeous!
Bowie's natural singing voice was a higher end baritone, with a very pleasant and surprisingly high falsetto. Sounds like two people, but it's all Bowie. One of the greatest artists in rock music. Glad you enjoyed it, Bowie was a treasure.
These videos are unbelievably awesome. Love this dude. In a world of madness, I take solace in the fact that we still got some good people out here spreading nothin but love.
The man was not a legend for nothing. He reinvented himself so many times, always coming in with a new style, and every time was something awesome. Pick any song, there are no disappointments here.
Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar solos on the tracks on "Let's Dance", including "China Girl". The film clips for several of these songs were made in Australia and the 'China Girl' is New Zealander Geeling Ng.
If someone asked me for my definition of “cool,” I’d play them this song. Bowie was a master. Lucky to have seen him live in 2002. Onstage he was a magician of sound and vision. Check out one of my favorite songs/albums by him: “Station to Station.” It’s pretty epic. Was in his “thin white duke” stage persona at the time. Cheers!

Bowie is the man! I was heartbroken when he passed. Fact: he wrote this song for Elvis(who he shares a birthday with) but it got rejected so he released it
According to some sources, John, this song was rejected but Elvis called Bowie & personally asked Bowie to produce his next album (after 1977) which he could've done because Bowie & Presley were both employed by RCA. (They also shared the same birth date -- not year).

That's all David. Sad thing is, he thought he didn't have a great voice. He said he was really a writer, but he was the only one who knew how to "style" the vocals right , so he just sang them himself. I think his voice is perfect.
So glad you're reacting to Bowie - something about his voice... I remember one day driving home, I was incredibly stressed from dealing with crazy stuff at work. I turned on the radio and his song "Changes" came on. Instantly I felt myself totally relax. It was the weirdest (and coolest) thing ever. I have all his albums. His musicianship is incredible - he did one song where the music was in one key, but he was singing in a different key... and it worked! Anyway, hope you keep exploring. His repertoire is extensive and wonderful. He and Queen are my top two favorites. Great reaction, by the way!
Bowie had amazing control popping in and out of falsetto. He was one of the most extreme musical talents of the modern world. He has been one of my favorite artists since I first heard him in the Labyrinth way back in 1986.
The thing I love about David Bowie is he was never afraid to be himself and he always was reinventing his sound and everybody loved it because he killed it every time
He was an absolute original. Fame, Young Americans, Right, Heroes, Rebel Rebel, Diamond Dogs, Ziggy Stardust....the list goes on and on for great tracks to react to. :)
Brother Jamel, you are on a roll. Bowie was a musical chameleon, his music changed which each album. The process is overdubbing. Recording successive tracks rewinding then laying down another layer of vocals.
Cocaine is what really changed his voice. Watch him on Dick Cavett performing Young Americans... then listen to him just a year earlier. Different voice.

Saw David Bowie on Broadway around 1981-82 , he was starring in a limited engagement of ‘ The Elephant Man ‘ needless to say he was unbelievable! What a talent.
Welcome, sir, to the greatest musical rabbit hole that exists - enjoy the ride!
Fame is a must
Fashion is great too
Of course yes FAME!
@@waynestumbo2408 I think it's Fame no?
Yesss!!! My fave! Its so funky!
@@chingaderasymastm6913 Fashion too
"How's he doin' this?" He's David Bowie-musical genius! This was from Bowie's Thin White Duke/Philadelphia soul era. The entire Station to Station album is excellent-check out TVC15, Station to Station, and Stay.
Christian Brasso TVC 15? Now we’re talking!
Amazing album
I love these reactions, it's so fun to see someone really get into it. His voice is so incredible, and in the mid to late '70s he had a band with a monster of a rhythm section. The grooves in Station to Station are just brilliant.
Takes me back to the year of my high school graduation-1976. This song was epic then and it still stands the test of time. RIP Starman 🌹
David re-worked "music" as we know it. Still has the spunk all these years later! Kudos for listening!
I'm 58 yrs. old, took early retirement, walk with my head held high, could not care less what people think of me...and dance like a crazy person to songs like these before I go to bed. Never been happier. Maybe these are my 'Golden Years'!
Right the f...k on! I don't need to be entertained or entertain anyone
I Hope I can achieve that!! Jealous!
I just saw this comment and I'm 54 and ...Man... This comment Brought a tear and a smile to my face🥲🥲🙂☺️☺️
I think if you look up David Bowie, it'll say: "He was smooth and cool as hell!"
Hearing his records is a mere whiff of his intensity as a live performer - I first experienced Bowie live on his "Serious Moonlight " tour in '83-'84 which started me on a life long quest to experience him as often as I could - I lost track of my live Bowie concerts at 25 or 26 times, the last being the "Reality" tour in Atlanta, GA in 2004 - the single most exciting live performer I've ever witnessed (and I've seen hundreds, if not a thousand live concerts in my lifetime) Ultra talent is correct - never been anything like him before or since - so sad that he is gone - I was lucky enough to witness his superb talents many times
lucky you to see Bowie so many times. It is one regret that I never got to see him play live.
The original title for this was gonna be "Some Walkin' Down The Street Music In The Shaft Movie," but David decided to shorten it to "Golden Years." I happen to like both titles.
😂
The guy was genius, he couldn't be pigeon holed, check out Changes
"Man I don't smoke cigarettes but he got me thinkin bout it!" lmaoooo
@HardNews TV4 They actually had a dispute about the live tour "Serious Moonlight Tour". They shouldn't have worked together in the first place, two big egos.
It’s rare to see a picture of him without a cigarette!
Bowieeeeeeee!!!!! He was such a genius!
It's fantastic watching someone discover a Legend! Absolutely amazing voice, this is my all time favourite song!
Don't forget the special eyes - gorgeous!
"And look at that album cover! Man, I don't smoke cigarettes -- BUT HE'S GOT ME THINKIN' BOUT IT!!!!"
EPIC.
Golden age of music.
He's the Goblin King. He can do anything. :)
Is that a Lizard King paraphrase? :-)
Wearing my Labyrinth tank top right now. 😉
You... Remind me of the babe ❤️
Sherri Black what babe?
The babe with the power
Yep. All him. A genius with a great vocal range. Reinvented himself over and over throughout a few decades. Miss him so very much 💔.
Bowie's natural singing voice was a higher end baritone, with a very pleasant and surprisingly high falsetto. Sounds like two people, but it's all Bowie. One of the greatest artists in rock music. Glad you enjoyed it, Bowie was a treasure.
I love this song , especially love it in the movie " A Knights Tale" w/ the late great Heath Ledger . Classic !
I loved the way they used his music in that movie
That was one of the best parts of that movie!
That dance was so great!
“Is this just him all by himself?”
Me: *nodding yes*
Girl. SAME. 🖤
He recruited some great, young, backup singers, including a then unknown Luther Vandross
On the album, that is
These videos are unbelievably awesome. Love this dude. In a world of madness, I take solace in the fact that we still got some good people out here spreading nothin but love.
The man was not a legend for nothing. He reinvented himself so many times, always coming in with a new style, and every time was something awesome. Pick any song, there are no disappointments here.
Jamal , my wife and I just retired and we dance and sing to this often. Love ya. Keep up banging reviews. Always look for your reviews.
He’s amazing. You could do a month of Bowie. Genius.
"Head voice" and "chest voice:" That's the difference between his higher and lower ranges. He was a great singer, that's for sure.
Plus throw in some falsetto too. He's got it all covered. :)
Jamel ... the look on your face every time Bowie hit the high notes .... priceless !!!
Jamel, You'll like "Changes" "Fame" "Suffragette City" "Modern Love" and "China Girl"
Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar solos on the tracks on "Let's Dance", including "China Girl". The film clips for several of these songs were made in Australia and the 'China Girl' is New Zealander Geeling Ng.
Stevie Ray was on China Girl.
STAY and REBEL,REBEL....
Cheers!
I'm 62 and watch alot of reactions but I enjoy your reactions the best. Keep on doing what you're doing so we from New Zealand can peace out with our beautiful memories. Kia Ora
A very vocally talented Singer/Songwriter.
Life on Mars, Heroes, Ashes to Ashes, Young Americans, The Jean Genie, all great songs!
Two thumbs up for Ashes to Ashes!!
Definitely Jean Genie 👍👍
Rebel Rebel
Teenage Wildlife
Ashes to Ashes, funk to funky you know Major Tom's a junkie!!!!!!! Love those lyrics and the shout out to Major Tom"s drug problem. Bowie was a genius................Jamal please review this song I know you will love it
He had a great voice! ❤️
The first time he says angel...your expression makes me smile
Bowie is the man! I was heartbroken when he passed. Fact: he wrote this song for Elvis(who he shares a birthday with) but it got rejected so he released it
According to some sources, John, this song was rejected but Elvis called Bowie & personally asked Bowie to produce his next album (after 1977) which he could've done because Bowie & Presley were both employed by RCA. (They also shared the same birth date -- not year).
@@lastrada52 i hear u i wasn't hating on Elvis dont care what anyone says if they are into him or not he is the king i was just speaking facts as are you✌ 2 great artists love them both
@@johnjedennett2206- Oh, I agree.
I also personally, don't think this song suited Elvis -- Bowie yes.
But it would've been nice to see what kind of production & songs would have come to that Elvis lp if Bowie had produced it. But we'll never know...
I do know to a degree Elvis had a "friendship" with Led Zeppelin, particularly Robert Plant. I wonder if Bowie would've brought them in. Nice fantasy.
@@lastrada52 indeed i think im just like you where we just appreciate the classic music that we got and have and not just with these two greats in Elvis and Bowie. Appreciate this little conversation mate bless you and thank you🤘✌
@@johnjedennett2206 - A pleasure John.
So happy you're doing more Bowie. I haven't even been able to listen to his last album yet, his passing hit me deeper than expected. At some point, see if you can react to "Panic In Detroit". Little known, I find it one of his most gripping, insightful songs. And you gotta dance to it, too!
That's all David. Sad thing is, he thought he didn't have a great voice. He said he was really a writer, but he was the only one who knew how to "style" the vocals right , so he just sang them himself. I think his voice is perfect.
Agree. ✌
Had the good fortune to see him live twice, he never let me down, one of the best of all time
The thing I love about David Bowie is he was never afraid to be himself and he always was reinventing his sound and everybody loved it because he killed it every time
He was an absolute original. Fame, Young Americans, Right, Heroes, Rebel Rebel, Diamond Dogs, Ziggy Stardust....the list goes on and on for great tracks to react to. :)
Also really love Panic in Detroit!
@@Johonnac Yes!!! So many....where to start hahahah
Brother Jamel, you are on a roll.
Bowie was a musical chameleon, his music changed which each album. The process is overdubbing. Recording successive tracks rewinding then laying down another layer of vocals.
David Bowie had such a range vocally! Nobody uses vibrato when they sing anymore. It sounds so good!
First Bowie song I ever heard way back in '77! Been a fan ever since. The man was a musical genius, who's legacy will endure.
Heroes would be a really amazing song!!
There is a great live version of Heroes.
Great song!!!!
“I don’t smoke cigarettes, but he’s got me thinking about it!”
🤣😂
Lol
Cocaine is what really changed his voice. Watch him on Dick Cavett performing Young Americans... then listen to him just a year earlier. Different voice.
Need me a Newport 💯
That picture totally makes me want to light a butt, too
THIS WAS 70s David Bowie ,, I DIG IT ,,
Even with all the accolades and awards, David Bowie is still one of the most underrated musicians ever. It's fun to see you enjoying him so much.
Jamal, that was my favourite watch for a reaction of yours EVER... just loved the surprise for you listening to Bowie's huge vocal range. One of the best vocal ranges EVER...
