    I'm still using my SPY27 Native 5 LW and I've rolled the edge twice (no chipping at all) and it sharpened back up easy. The first time was on a 1000 grit whetstone which I kind of botched and the second time on the Worksharp Precision Adjust and got it scary sharp.

    I’ve been using Spy27 for the past couple months and my thoughts are the same! Easy to maintain and keeps a fairly decent edge for longer than expected.

    Knife blade insights aside, it's good to see some of us are still driving the best transmissions on planet earth, row-your-own MT's! 🚙

    I think I had heard the spy27 was formulated to be easier for Spyderco to machine as well. Which makes sense to me based to your experience maintaining it. Sounds like a great mid-tier steel.

    Glad to see you reviewing those steels, worksharp’s field sharpener is also quite excellent, includes two grits, a ceramic, and a strop.

    My person favorite for k390 is 700 1500 JIS grit followed by 8 micron then 4 micron strop. I love that steel

    I've only had k390 on a little Spyderco Dragonfly but I love it. I need a good hiking, camp, heavier use knife because I'll be starting the vanlife and doing lots of hiking and camping and I'm very interested in the new Lionsteel T6 with k490. I'm going to wait until I hear some reviews on it and how well Lionsteel treated the k490 before I spend that much money.

    I'm really hoping they do a sage 5 in spy27. I'm on the verge of buying the lightweight in s30v but I know as soon as I do they will release what I really want.

    I love my SPY 27 Manix 2 lw. I wish they had an option to pair it with g10 scales though. Not dogging the lw frn scales by any means, they work and have tons of grip, but I would love a g10 Para 2 or Manix 2 xl with with the SPY 27.

    I’ve finally got a spy27 native and I’m using it more than lc200n and my magnacut native. Save those for ocean now the spy27 has a lot of corrosion resistance while having good edge retention !! On boxes at least

    Suboptimal heat treats often lead to a lesser sharpening experience ! Try some M390 at 62-63 HRC and then some 58-59 HRC, it's a pain to sharpen the softer M390!

    • @LordRojaca
      @LordRojaca 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would definitely help to know their austenitizing temps and tempering temp/time. The majority of the hardness comes from the fineness/sharpness of the martensite but when tempering you can get a high amount of carbide and still be softer. This could be why she says the the USA k390 requires the diamond stones while the Japanese is fine on ceramic. The vanadium carbides are harder than the typical alumina ceramic stone.

    A 6 micron Gunny Juice or higher on a strop should bring it back with a few passes too. Nice video by the way.

    Can I switch between diamond and silicone carbide stones for example if I have a 140 diamond then a 240 sic stone and then back to a fine grit diamond? Thanks!

    I really respect your opinion so I’m going to have to try some spy27. I haven’t yet because I heard it was designed by Sal Glesser. He wanted a modern , tougher , and easier to sharpen Vg-10. Even though that sounds great, when Eric took over spyderco he felt that S45 vn was a better edc steel so he has focused more on that. Their are so many steels I can’t use them all so I wrote it off. Can you get para 3 lw in spy-27

    I heard SPY27 has sharpenability. I got it for a powder metallurgy equivalent of N690 Co and VG-10. Got it in PM 2 and mule team. I think for all the good reports and all the trouble of developing a propitary alloy they would use it so much more making at least new models, if not updating all the S30V models.
