I'm 68 and it seems to me that Neil Diamond has been around my entire life. His music transcends the decades. It feels so comforting to listen to his songs.❤
@@elaineproffitt1032 I'm 78 and I've been listening since 1970 when I picked up a copy of his Gold album. When I play it today, it still sounds as fresh as it did back then.
I've read somewhere once that Neil Diamond has never been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, or a lifetime achievement award. If this is true, then this would be a misjustice. I hope they aren't waiting to award him post humously. Give the man his glory and honor him while he's still living😢🙏☠️🗣️🗣️
My mom raised me on lots of great music but Neil Diamond was her favorite. She has developed advanced dementia and she doesn’t remember much these days but when I get a chance to play her the music she grew up with I get her back for a little while. She claps sings, remembers all the songs and we sing and play many many of his classic tunes. Thanks professor for sharing this video and thank you Neil Diamond for your incredible timeless music.
@@gennyolson2257 It is amazing how much music can break through the memory banks. As you know It is such an awful disease. No one can quite understand unless they have been through it with someone close to them. The music is basically the only thing that changes her whole personality in the moment.
@rjjabjiniak8848 that is so true. It really is a horrible disease. It's emotionally painful for family to go through. No one can understand until they have experienced it themselves. It was amazing how mom my new the words to songs and it would bring her so much joy. It's such a mystery how the brain works this way.
@@ProfessorofRock Unfortunately, no I have not. I have been to about 70-80 concerts in my time and haven't seen Supertramp or Queen either. Two of my favorite big name acts. btw: Thanks for the GREAT videos!
I had joined the US Navy at 20, trying to repair a severe broken heart. I was gone from home for 5 important years and lost track of my roots and grew distant from my family. After discharge from the military, I was able to settle down physically but not emotionally and still had not repaired connections with my family. I had contemplated suicide on occasion. These were not knee-jerk responses to momentary situations. These were calculated responses to a pointless life. Coming out of work late night (PM shift) this song was on the radio in my truck. I AM I cried! I AM said I... and I am lost and I can't even say why. I felt Neil's loneliness and disconnection. It was my own. I wrote those lyrics in my journal along with some brief commentary. Tears stained the pages and notes. I bought the cassette and listened to all his music but especially this song. I sang it as my own. 10 years later, I got saved. (That's a long story) and now, being a Christian -- I looked back at my journal and saw those lyrics I had recorded. "I AM" I cried. The bible records that God's sacred name, given to Moses, is "I AM" In the NT Paul had written to the Roman church, "Anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." All those years I had been calling upon the name of the Lord but didn't know it. He heard and he saved me. Did you ever read about a frog who dreamed of being a king, and then became one? Well except for the name, and a few other changes -- when you talk about me, the story's the same one. He who has an ear to hear should listen to Holly Holy, too!
I was about 12 years old when one of my mums friends made a cassette tape for her of Neil Diamond. It contained tracks from the Hot August nights album and some others. I would listen to that tape when I was sad, lonely and depressed, it comforted me and helped me through a rough time. That was around 1978. I still listen to Neil Today. My biggest regret is that I never got to see him live. In concert. Thanks Neil for helping me through my rough times, it was a kind of musical therapy. 😊
As a member of a Neil Diamond tribute band, Diamond Gold, we've researched all the big hits. A lot of Neil's inspirations for his songs (like "Cracklin' Rosie") are a bit surprising! You've given even more detail than we'd found, so thank you!
My son was about 15 when he came home from school unhappy with me because on the ride home with his friends, "Sweet Caroline" came on the radio and the other boys made fun of him because he knew all the words and sang along. I told him not to worry, I'm sure they know all the words too, they just don't know how to sing.
@@karentrimmer there are entire university foot ball stadiums ( Penn State and others) that singe sweet Caroline at games and have a great time...every one...Greeks, independents and townies.....love it.
I was into Bowie, punk and proto-electronica in the 1970s, but I never felt any reticence about saying I liked Neil Diamond and none of my mates gave me any lip about it. Admitting to liking the Carpenters or Abba could be foolhardy, but Diamond was never viewed as a guilty pleasure. Seems like everyone is on the same page now, as Sweet Caroline has become a football (soccer) song in the UK.
I dated a girl named Rose for seven years. I learned the song on guitar, and would sing it to her... she loved it. The song will always remind me of her, regardless of its origin and true meaning. I love your channel. Keep up the good work. Three chords and the truth, brother!
Whenever someone asks me who my favorite musical artists are, I NEVER even think of Neil Diamond. But, honestly, he has so many songs I not only like, but just can't stop singing after I hear them. Cracklin' Rosie, Song Sung Blue, and of course Sweet Caroline to name a few. Thanks for another eye (and ear) opening episode Professor!
....y'know, I have a confession.....I HATED 'Song Sung Blue' (too "Muppets", for a dude like *DIAMOND* ) .....but, I LOOOOVE the Johnny Mathis version! ...I guess, "Mathis IS"! ...ha-HAA!
I don't think of him first either. But his music spans the length of my life with one iconic song after another. In fact, Hot August Night at the Greek Theater was my first concert-with my parents!
Sweet Caroline is one song I will immediately shut off if it comes on. One of the most over rated songs in history and I find it extremely annoying. Of course we all have our own opinions.
I remember seeing Neil Diamond about 7 years ago. I wasn't expecting much, but what a concert. I remember the crowd sing along, and I was amazed at how many songs I knew. What a great singer.
@@Frankie5Angels150Well, just as is said in What About Bob, Bill Murray’s character DOES propose that theory: “(Doctor Marvin) There are two types of people…those who like Neil Diamond and those who don’t…” 🤷🏼♂️😆
In '92 I was very pregnant and saw Neil Diamond @ the Forum in the round. So many stretch limousines, stars pouring in. Dick Clark had better seats than me. My son stayed off my bladder while be bopping to Neil. Though everyone was constantly singing along, Coming to America was the finale and the entire audience was on it's feet as well. An incredibly memorable performance.
My college roommate told me the secret of Crackling Rosé. I couldn't believe it at first and I do find it sad that men comforted themselves for their lack of female companionship with cheap wine. However, Neil touched every song he wrote with such a depth of emotion that even knowing the truth behind his poetry does prevent me from singing along with a heart filled with joy! And Hot August Night, I sang that so loud the neighbors heard me. Coming to America always brings me to tears because my Dad's folks were immigrants and Dad's love for this country ran deep. Neil Diamond has always been a beloved artist for me. Heck, I even bought his Jonathan Livingston Seagull album and loved it. Neil spoke to the heart, or sang, rather. His voice wasn't a brilliant trained voice, but it was a brilliant voice that opened hearts and minds to being alive and feeling. His was a rich voice, human and emotional. He will always be a bright star, unique and unequaled.
HOW can Holly Holy be underappreciated??? It is one of Neil Diamond's best. I love how it starts out so calmly and builds to such a crashing crescendo. For someone who grew up in the 60s my favorite of his is Beautiful Noise which just so well captured that era.
Holly Holy is a masterpiece! The music and the lyrics. Neil seems to set an almost sexual, orgasmic experience into a religious, miraculous context. And anyone who knows the world of religious ecstasy, knows that it works. At the end of Neil’s performance of Holly Holy on the BBC special (1972?, available on TH-cam), Neil Diamond is seeped in sweat and physically exhausted. Most brilliant performance of that song.
So many childhood memories attached to Neils songs. I was able to see him in concert ( on my bucket list) in 2010. That was the greatest concert I've ever been to. He sang each song like you hear them on the radio with enthusiasm & vigor. An absolute showman.
Saw Neil twice in Indianapolis, when he played coming to America....it literally raised the hair up on my arms!!! The whole crowd was on their feet cheering!!! He could've played 3 hours non stop!!! What a fantastic performer!!!
Am I the only person that has to go listen to the video of every song The Professor tells us about?? Then I'm down the rabbit hole of the artist he highlights in each video! Thank you for reminding me about Neil Diamond!!! Can't wait to go down this rabbithole!!!
I'm another guy who's not afraid to say I have ALWAYS loved Neil and at one time fortunate enough to attend one of his concerts at the L.A. Forum. Your spotlight on "Crackli'n Rosie" will have me never listening to it again in the same way. I actually love the history so much more than the way most everyone perceives it to have been. Go Professor Go!
I've seen Neil Diamond four times over the years. When people ask me who puts on the best show of all the concerts I have been to and I answer Neil Diamond, they look surprised. He truly is the "Jewish Elvis."
....AND for someone who actually still LIVES in his Old neighborhood in Brooklyn, NYC (me), I can attest to his 'reach', 'round these here parts! ...ha-HAA!
I discovered Neil in the 90's. I'm now a big fan. Our local minor league baseball stadium plays Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" on a regular basis. The whole crowd sings along. I had no idea about any of this history. Thank you.
You do know that the Boston Red Sox do this and have done so for many years . My wife and I traveled to watch our Orioles play the Red Sox at Fennway . The whole stadium erupts into the song . The Orioles have used John Denvers " Thank God I'm a Country Boy " not long after the songs release in 74. I wonder what other MLB teams use ?
He wrote the Monkees "I'm a Believer." When his hit "Sweet Caroline" is powerful enough to stir a ballroom of army officers to participate in the "bom bom bom," and "so good, so good, so good," even when played by a woodwind group (it did help they had a few drinks).
Absolutely Love Neil Diamond . I sent my mom and dad 2 tickets to see him in concert in San Diego, Ca back in the early 90s. I’m not sure who felt the Neil Diamond love the most. Was it mom n dad seeing Neil in concert playing they’re most favorites songs or me knowing how much that gift meant to the ones you love. Maybe it’s true , “ it’s better to give then to receive”… love that is. Thanks for the fantastic trip down memory lane
I wasn't what I would consider a fan of Diamond, but I (somewhat begrudgingly) went to see him when he played Summerfest - here in Milwaukee. WOW !! What a performer !! After 40some years it still remains one of the best concerts I ever attended.
I’ve been a Neil Diamond fan my whole life, thanks to my parents, and he was my first “pop” concert, in 1985. I was one of only a few teenagers in attendance, but I loved every minute of it - what a spectacular live performer.
This comment is for the segment on Neil Diamond!Even heavy metalers, like myself, love him. We love him for his genius song writing skills... There's no one better but Gordon Lightfoot comes a hair close. He's timeless and is as relevant today as he was then & no one comes close 2 being consistently popular over decades with new material sprinkled throughout than the legendary Neil Diamond! He transcends all jaundras of music & people!
The only time I saw him perform was...at a baseball game. Last June I was in Fenway Park with my sons and during the traditional middle of the eighth inning rendition of "Sweet Caroline", Neil was there in a suite and led the crowd in singing it. Totally unexpected and a great memory.
Cracklin' Rosie' brings back childhood memories. Takes me to a wonderful place. My introduction to Neil Diamond was Song Sung Blue. I was instantly a fan. Cracklin' Rosie remains one of my favorites. I never imagined what it was about. I had quite a different vision in my head. I can't pick one Neil Diamond song as my favorite, but Cracklin' Rosie is one that is tied for the top spot. Thanks for another great episode, Professor and for taking me back to some wonderful memories.
I'd never have guessed the true inspiration for this track, and Neil has a knack for lyrical genius - both obvious and obscure. There's a reason that Niel Diamond impersonators exist. He's timeless, classic and comes with a sound and vibe that spans generations. One of the more memorable impersonators is a Vancouver, Canada performer who goes by the moniker "Nearly Neil".
I’ve never really been into Neil Diamond but I can recognize the talent in making music that you can’t help singing along with. As always thanks for the excellent content!
This channel is astounding. How do you put out so much high quality content daily? I love the samples of songs immediately after they're mentioned. Really keeps the info humming along instead of me thinking, "Wait..what was that song he mentioned?"
You have done some amazing episodes, professor, but this one is definitely top 5. My childhood was filled with songs by Neil Diamond. Crackin Rosie was always playing on the radio. It's one of my favorites. I never knew the story behind it. I just assumed it was written about a lady of the night. The inspiration behind this one just further validates Neil's songwriting prowess.
Some of my earliest memories are hearing Neil Diamond songs on the radio. Thanks for featuring this one! I’ve seen a lot of concerts and Neil Diamond put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Thank you for doing this. Neil Diamond is one of my hero's and I've always felt he has never gotten the credit due to him as a songwriter. When I'm feeling stuck and cramped up with writers block trying to create my own stuff I will go on a N.D. binge where I listen to no one else. Doesn't always cure the block but I sure do feel better and more connected with music every time I do It. Great video.
Inspiration is such a versatile thing. That's why composing and songwriting is such an endless journey. Gotta love how that is why music is endless in and of itself!
My mom LOVED music of most genres, and she sang all the time. I noticed that she could come up with a real song for just about any topic. My brother and I used to challenge her to come up with a song about the weirdest things we could think of, like space travel. Too easy! as she crooned, "Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars..." One time one of my friends asked if she could think of a song that was about dogs. My brother and I rolled our eyes and told them to think of something harder because we'd be there all day if she sang every dog song she'd ever heard! "Ol' Shep" by Red Foley "The Puppy Song" by Harry Nilsson "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton "Me and You and a Dog Named Blue" by Lobo "How Much is That Doggy in the Window" by ? "Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog" by Johnny Cash "Move It On Over" by Hank Williams... and I'm sure if Mom was still here she'd be able to come up with at least 4 more doggy songs!
Put a group of friends together to play cards...sheepshead here. Put on Neil Diamond music. When 'Hello again' comes on...listen...everyone stops talking and listens. That's how emotionally moving his music is. He used to put on great performances too. Always worth covering this genius.
Mr. Diamond is battling Parkinsons and no longer records or performs except on very rare circumstances. Since he retired in 2018, he has done one live performance of Sweet Caroline and a TH-cam video of Sweet Caroline". Unfortunately, he has been downgraded to "was".
I was a late to the game regarding Neil Diamond. But needless to say, he is one of my favorites. I was extremely fortunate to get to see him on the last stop on his last concert tour (in San Diego). It was a fun concert, and I felt bad that I missed so many of his previous concerts. There will never be anyone like Neil.
Neil is undoubtedly one of the best songwriters, composers, and performers of all time. I've loved his music since I was in grade school, in fact we sang some of his songs in my award-winning children's choir in the 70s. Such a wonderfully talented and kind gentleman.
The great Neil Diamond 💎 Solitary Man is my favorite of his, but I can listen to all his songs all day. Didn't know that he wrote Red Red Wine. Once again you have given me facts Professor. Thank you
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Similar to 911, this is planned to do a proxy war with IRAN. Sadly, innocent casualties are always allowed. I was raised on Neil Diamond and raised my kids listening to him. Absolutely one of my very favorite artists and I’m instantly transported back to my childhood with my mom singing along happily every time he came on the radio. 😊
I went through the ‘70s and now my son, 11 years old, sings Mr Blue Sky and also some Neil Diamond songs ;”) talk about synchronicity. Love these stories!
Great story behind this tune. Yes, we loved our cheap wine in Canada back in those days. There wasn't much selection, as alcohol sales were heavily regulated and favoured the Canadian wine industry which was in it's infancy. Cracklin Rosie, Baby Duck and Spumante Bambino and other "fine wines" were mainstays for many of us. Things have thankfully come a long way since then! Thanks, Adam!
Another home run, Prof!❤ love Neil Diamond. Hollie Holy was a fave before i heard any of his other's. Its no wonder that The Band had him on stage for the Last Waltz. To me that's high praise if it comes from Levon and company. I'll have to share that story with my rez friends at the pub down the road.
The fact that my first name is Caroline has nothing to do with my love for Neil Diamond! My last memory of Neil is of his very last concert ever in Wichita, KS. I had been given 2 tickets to this concert for my birthday and I went with my then 14 year old grandson. He was quite amazed that I sang along quietly with nearly every song! Sweet Caroline was one of his encore songs, and the audience was on their feet! I am so thankful today that I was there to enjoy my favorite from the 60's and forward to that last performance! One of my favorite singers, composers, and heartthrobs of my teen years!
My Mom loved him so much. She passed on February 22, 2023. I'm 52 so I have been listening to him a LONG time. He is family to me. He is fantastic and I LOVE his music 💖🥰💖🥰
The last week in September was the 22nd anniversary of my mom's passing. Neil Diamond is one of many artists that always reminds me of my mom. My mom's name was Carolyn and "Sweet Caroline" was her song.
My Mom loved Neil Diamond, with good reason. When I was a teenager I bought tickets for she and my Dad for her birthday. She loved it and I am so glad I was able to do that for her.
Many childhood memories of listening to Neil Diamond when my family went on road trips. My parents (Baby Boomers) raised me and my sister (gen X) on musicians like him. Through my parents, I gained an appreciation of music that their generation grew up with. Neil Diamond's songs could make me either sing along, or (in the case of songs like "Hello Again") make me cry. He is a genius at evoking emotions through his songs. Thanks for the beaitiful music, Mr. Diamond! Thank you, Professor, for highlighting another musical masterpiece!
Neil was a member of the Freshman Chorus and Choral Club, along with classmate Barbra Streisand at Erasmus Hall HS. Greatest high school chorus of all-time! lol
.....and, get this....me charts indicate Oct 10. 1970, Neil had the #1 tune in the USA w/ "Crackin'...", and Babs had the #1 Movie with "Hello Dolly"! ...talk about makin' your Alma Mater PROUD, even though it was High School! ...HA-HAAA!!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Yes, they both grew up in Brooklyn, New York and sang in the high school chorus together. What a fantastic sounding school chorus that must have been. Of course, later, in 1978, Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand recorded together the classic duet "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" that reached #1 on the pop charts.
@@stephenhanft1226 Now, THAT makes so much sense! Barbra graduated in 1959 and Neil in 1958, so they would have definitely seen each other in the school halls.
Maybe you have to be Canadian to say this, but "Cracklin' Rosie" is about EXACTLY what I thought it was about. (I grew up seeing ads for André's wines all over TV and print, so there's that.)
I’m not Canadian, but it’s about exactly what I thought it was about, too. I grew up in the 70s when both the song and ads for said wine were everywhere. So, the connection seemed pretty clear.
Neil Diamond has always been a favorite of mine, even when he wasn’t cool to listen to in the mid 70’s. Red, red wine was remade by a rap group and when I was able to sing most of the words to this remade song my son was flabbergasted that I knew such a recently released song. I said it was an old song that was remade and my teenage son immediately switched the radio channel. I prefer the original songs.
Such a cool story - and the metaphor it evokes applies to how ordinary every day people viewed it as finding happiness in someone that everyone sees as an outcast, yet who means the world to you, it works but as it was based upon and how people viewed it as expressing how the person you choose no matter how undervalued by everyone is everything and more than everything to you.
love Neil Diamond so many great memories with my friends growing up drinking all those cheap wines singing Sweet Caroline man you keep making my days brighter was having a bad morning until i seen this and you played that clip of Sweet Caroline and it brought me back to such better days and a big smile on my face thank you for making my day brighter i still have one of my Neil Diamonds cassette tapes that i use to play on my portable boombox thanks again for making my day better you are trully doing the the Lord of Musics work and saving us from our cloudy bad days thanks brother 🤘🤘
Neil Diamond was always the one I would choose if I had to be a great singer/songwriter. I can listen to him for hours. My dad told me the greatest concert he went to was Jazz Singer tour in Chicago. My favorite song is Shilo. The song about his imaginary friend. I Am I said another one. Too many for me to list. Thanks for covering Neil Diamond. Adam you been on a roll lately for me. It’s like you looked at my CD collection.
MY ALL TIME FAVORITE NEIL D SONG!! Talk about a singing cowboy song & it being about not enough girls so guys got hammered makes it perfect!! Thanks for finally doing this gem Prof!!! If this lasted for an hour that’d be all right!🤠
My greatest Neil Diamond memory was my brother buying a picture disc for Judas Priest's Screaming for Vengeance. Giving in to temptation, he busted it out of its packaging to play it only to hear Diamond's America. The picture disc alone in its package would be worth a lot today but the mislabeling would make it even more valuable.
Thank you for this history of this fun song. I am such a Neil Diamond “Lifer” and you bring proof to what we Diamond Heads know; Mr Diamond is a master of the English language… spinning our imaginations along a carefully crafted tune into the poetry of his mind.
"Tap Root Manuscript" was the first album I ever owned. It was a Christmas gift from my parents in 1970. My family had always been into music and when "Cracklin' Rosie" came on the radio it sort of became my anthem for awhile. When I first listened to the entire album "Soolaimón" became my favorite song on it. While I believe it was actually released before "Cracklin' Rosie", it didn't really get into my head until I heard it on the album. When I was in middle school, I lent the album to a friend and never got it back. I've since purchased it in many formats including cassette, cd, and now on iTunes. It will always be one of my favorite albums.
Unique synthesis of lyrics, music composition and voice makes the songs infectious and memorable. I do not consider any other artist come closer after having heard almost every singer of his generation and beyond, till today. There is something in his personality, body language and style that rivets you in his live performance.
Thank you POR. Your outstanding picks of songs to cover lately has been the biggest reason for the addition of new titles to my personal TH-cam playlist. Thanks for the great inspiration. Your story telling is amazing! Edited to add that my late husband and I LOVED a good bottle of Boone's Farm Strawberry Hill. Thanks for the memories.
Came to your channel for the music history but stayed for the nostalgia train. Love the context you always provide for the time the songs were written. Thanks for bringing back all the memories video after video.
My mother would play Neil Diamond all the time, making me roll my eyes as a kid. But, as I grew older I really began to love his music. Can’t imagine my record collection without Hot August Night and other great Diamond records!! Thank you Adam!
I've said it to you before, Adam, and I'll say it every time I get the chance: Hot August Night is the greatest live album ever. I've worn it out on every form of media possible. Worn out my Mom's 8-track, my own vinyl and cassette, played the CDs till they were all scratched up, and if I can wear out a TH-cam playlist, I probably will!
Never seen many concerts due to being a single mother most of my adult life, I never saw Neil either. My sisters did in the early 70's & loved him. Not sure if it was in Idaho Falls or Pocatello, that was a long time ago. I have many songs of his as my list of great songs. Thankx! Adam for the great video on him
I've stated numerous times on the channel that I was an '80s metalhead, particularly in my teens. With that said, Neil Diamond has always been one of my favorite artists, a guilty pleasure if you will. My friends in middle and high school would have had a good laugh, if they knew I liked Neil Diamond. It wasn't cool at that point and age. One of my all-time favorite songs is Neil Diamond's "America". In fact, it's my favorite song of his. I'll play it and Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" back to back during our Independence Day celebration at my mother-in-law's house. Those two songs, and a couple others, just go so well with fireworks.
I don't even remember how many Neil Diamond concerns I went to. Once I even went to Charlotte, NC, from Atlanta, just to see him there. Amazing Songwriter, musicians, and perforiert! Brings back a lot of happy memories.
When I was younger my then wife was a Neil Diamond fan. Her friends would get together to watch a concert recording. I'd roll my eyes but my brain sang along every time.
Neil Diamond is my all time favorite singer/songwriter. I’ve seen him in concert three times and it was fantastic! I love the instrumentals on tap root manuscript. Moody Blues, John Denver, BeeGees top the rest of my favorites!
I have loved Neil since I was 15 and my older brother came home with “Gold”, Neil’s live at the Troubadour album. Omg, I couldn’t stop listening to it….I was able to meet him backstage at the Greek Theatre in ‘71 ( I was 15 he was 30!) and have seen him many times since including the first night of his last tour. Crackling Rosie has been my ringtone since I got my very first cellphone! Thank you so much for the video! 😊
I mention this in my comment above. Gold was the first ND record I ever heard (except for singles on the radio at the time). In my comment, I wrote that I thought it was at the Greek.. I think you're correct in saying the Troubadour. We played that LP all the time. It is still my favourite version of Brother Loves Travelin Salvation Show (better than Hot August).
When I was in high school I literally played Hot August Night so much I wore the album out and had to by a second. It is still my go to. ❤️ Neil Diamond.
Came from a home filled with all kinds of music and Neil was a favorite throughout life. Can't recall the first time hearing his music. Diamond is a familiar old friend bringing joy, harmony and peace in times of trouble and sunshine in the blues. The blemish of the time signature near the end is highly discernable and a necessary piece of character making 'Cracklin' Rosie' exactly the song it is... So well known that when it comes on, it's impossible not to mindlessly sing. With B.J. Thomas...Diamond is a favorite male singer of that time.
Wow. Thank you for this video! I'm big Neil Diamond fan; he was actually the first singer I saw in concert (at the Greek Theatre). I love "Cracklin' Rosie," but never knew the story behind it. The lyrics make sense now!
Great stuff! Interestling enough, Red Red Wine WAS written about a woman! :) One of my favorite artists. Got to see him once in concert and it quickly became my favorite live shows! He (and he alone) made Saving Silverman one of my favorite bad comedies!
One of only a handful of incredibly talented and prolific musicians, singers and songwriters. Who among us born in the 50's and 60's doesn't sing along when they hear Neil Diamond? We can't help ourselves! I shamelessly adore, and always will, John Denver, Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond! Great video!
This is a great video where you have described the passion and meaning of this great hit perfectly. Keep up the great work, your productions are fantastic. Keep it groovy, regards from Oz🇦🇺
This song absolutely ROCKS! Brings back good times when me and my buddy met once a week at a local bar and always had to play this song at least once while we enjoyed a few cold ones and hashed out life 😆. Neil Diamond is a definite icon! Thanks for sharing this story of the song!
One of the first albums I played on the turntable when I was a little kid and I still have my late father's copy. Foundational in my eclectic taste in music.

My mom was the same way. She couldn't remember who I was but put on a Johnny Cash song, and she was so happy and sang along.

Adam, Neil Diamond's 'Hot August Night' was his crown jewel. From beginning to end. One of the greatest live performances ever!❤
“Tree people out there, god bless you, I’m singing for you too!”

I agree. It’s such a well crafted song.
Yes, saw him perform it live, three times!❤
The bible records that God's sacred name, given to Moses, is "I AM"
In the NT Paul had written to the Roman church, "Anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
All those years I had been calling upon the name of the Lord but didn't know it. He heard and he saved me.
Did you ever read about a frog who dreamed of being a king, and then became one?
Well except for the name, and a few other changes -- when you talk about me, the story's the same one.

Not afraid to say I love Neil Diamond. It's shallow to feel threatened to not be able to admit it. He's awesome 😎.
Same. I just walk straight out and say it.
@@karentrimmer, and he'll be the one the girls want to date 🙂

Whenever someone asks me who my favorite musical artists are, I NEVER even think of Neil Diamond. But, honestly, he has so many songs I not only like, but just can't stop singing after I hear them. Cracklin' Rosie, Song Sung Blue, and of course Sweet Caroline to name a few. Thanks for another eye (and ear) opening episode Professor!

I don't think of him first either. But his music spans the length of my life with one iconic song after another. In fact, Hot August Night at the Greek Theater was my first concert-with my parents!
He’s like that artist you forgot you loved.
Put Solitary Man on that list too
Sweet Caroline is one song I will immediately shut off if it comes on.

Such a legend.

I absolutely love Neil Diamond! The world is a better place because of the songs that he wrote.
So many amazing songs.
So true!
Neil Diamond was among the very few artists emerging from the late sixties who gained fans from the older generations.
He will always be a bright star, unique and unequaled.
seagull... BE ... LONLEY LOOKING SKY OUR FATHER... ALL GREAT SONGS ...
So well said!
Cracklin` Rosie a top song that peaked at 2 in November 1970 still gets a fair bit of air play today;here in Australia
It still gets played on some radio stations in The Northeast of U.S., too. I hear it almost every month.
I’m glad it does, Peter!
That’s because you are alcoholics and gave up your guns.
Southeast too! Love all Neil Diamond!
HOW can Holly Holy be underappreciated??? It is one of Neil Diamond's best. I love how it starts out so calmly and builds to such a crashing crescendo. For someone who grew up in the 60s my favorite of his is Beautiful Noise which just so well captured that era.
My personal #1 of ND.
Holly Holy is such a great song.
One of my favorites too. “Sweet Caroline”…not a fan.
@@nadogrl I used to like Sweet Caroline until Neil Diamond revealed the back story. Just felt a bit creepy even though it was not meant that way.

I discovered Neil in the 90's. I'm now a big fan. Our local minor league baseball stadium plays Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" on a regular basis. The whole crowd sings along. I had no idea about any of this history. Thank you.
So good! So good! So good!
He wrote the Monkees "I'm a Believer."
When his hit "Sweet Caroline" is powerful enough to stir a ballroom of army officers to participate in the "bom bom bom," and "so good, so good, so good," even when played by a woodwind group (it did help they had a few drinks).
That’s right!
He penned 4 Monkees songs. I love all of them.
Neil’s studio sound is way different than what he’d done live. And that surprised a lot of people.

When did you see him?
Too easy! as she crooned, "Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars..."
One time one of my friends asked if she could think of a song that was about dogs. My brother and I rolled our eyes and told them to think of something harder because we'd be there all day if she sang every dog song she'd ever heard!
"Ol' Shep" by Red Foley
"The Puppy Song" by Harry Nilsson
"Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton
"Me and You and a Dog Named Blue" by Lobo
"How Much is That Doggy in the Window" by ?
"Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog" by Johnny Cash
"Move It On Over" by Hank Williams...
and I'm sure if Mom was still here she'd be able to come up with at least 4 more doggy songs!
It is all connected in some way, shape, or form.😊

The last week in September was the 22nd anniversary of my mom's passing. Neil Diamond is one of many artists that always reminds me of my mom. My mom's name was Carolyn and "Sweet Caroline" was her song.
My Mom loved Neil Diamond, with good reason. When I was a teenager I bought tickets for she and my Dad for her birthday. She loved it and I am so glad I was able to do that for her.
Hot August Night was the soundtrack to my childhood, mom listened to it at least daily. Still my favorite live album of all time.
Have you heard comedian Tim Hawkins’ spoof of “Hello Again” in his piece about how OLD rockers should sing some of their famous songs? It’s epic!
Neil was a member of the Freshman Chorus and Choral Club, along with classmate Barbra Streisand at Erasmus Hall HS.
Greatest high school chorus of all-time! lol
That's right! Small world!

Maybe you have to be Canadian to say this, but "Cracklin' Rosie" is about EXACTLY what I thought it was about. (I grew up seeing ads for André's wines all over TV and print, so there's that.)
It's news to me as an American, and I like knowing the story!
I knew it had to be about wine!
I’m American and Rose’ wine was popular when the song first came out.
I’m not Canadian, but it’s about exactly what I thought it was about, too. I grew up in the 70s when both the song and ads for said wine were everywhere. So, the connection seemed pretty clear.
I'm a wine drinker in the US, and I've never heard of Rosé pronounced "rosie."
Not a rap group but reggae
Same here. I’m 59. My son was shocked that I knew the words to one of his favorite songs. 🤣
Just saw the Broadway show about his life and music. Great show and performance. He is a complex, solitary man and very relatable.

One of the best writers, with a wonderful voice. He brought me through some great and sad times.
I really enjoyed this. 45 years ago, I was in high school. I did my senior thesis on the poetry of Neil Diamond. ❤ Such a talented writer.
LOL! That's hilarious. I can only imagine the look of shock/bewilderment on your brother's face when he heard Neil Diamond's voice and song!
Mr diamond is one of a kind sir thank you for all the wonderful music.
I close my eyes and sing out loud every time I hear a Neil Diamond song.
Love his voice and music❤️❤️
Never seen many concerts due to being a single mother most of my adult life, I never saw Neil either. My sisters did in the early 70's & loved him. Not sure if it was in Idaho Falls or Pocatello, that was a long time ago. I have many songs of his as my list of great songs. Thankx! Adam for the great video on him
Neil’s voice, lyrics, everything just reaches the soul.
Saving Silverman helped me feel better coming out as a Neil fan.

The Jazz Singer soundtrack was fantastic.
What don't you like about him?
@@ProfessorofRock it was pop and ballads. I was a die hard rocker. But now that I'm much older (30 years later) I appreciate him.
I love this song, especially the guitar riff that you hear just after the first line. Gets me every time. Yeah, I’m weird, I freely admit it! 😅
Thanks Adam for keeping Our music in the forefront!!
