The fascinating part to me is that they blew the lyrics to Marvin Gaye's song. I wonder if they had hearing issues. Marvin's lyrics were so profound. Marvin's version, "People say believe half of what you see, Son, and none of what you hear." Versus CCR "People say, "You hear from what you see Not, not, not from what you hear" But having nonsensical lyrics doesn't hurt because just as someone is thinking, "I am confused" they are singing, "I can't help but be confused."

Loved CCR right out of the gate. Born on the Bayou was my introduction. Went to Viet Nam just after Proud Mary was released and I took CCR's music with me on my journey. When I came home in June of 1970, I found out that they were coming to Cleveland Oh in a few weeks. Got a couple of tickets and went to the show. It was great to see my heroes playing the songs that saw me through 12 months of the hot country.

I was a teen in the 70s, and times have changed. People, including kids, are so depressed, and unhappy. Dating is a thing of the past it seems. Swip right to ignore, swipe left and F..... Or just pay some photoshopped gal monthly and jack away. I'm so glad I grew up when I did.

I've seen John Fogerty live a couple of times in my life. I can distinctly recall him singing "there's a bathroom on the right" in the second to last chorus, just before the end of the song. I also remember him scratching his head with his index finger, a symbolic gesture to the crowd as if to say, "You guys really think those are the lyrics???" I used to have his Premonition album, and I believe he also sang that line there as well.

Way back in 1970 or 71 I was 7/8 years old and just learning to play the piano. My Dad’s youngest brother was 20 and played keyboards in a band. Dad & I called passed Nan’s one afternoon after my music lesson and Uncle Phill asked me to show him what I was learning. I was being classically trained, so I played the pieces I was learning. He listened, said that I was doing well..but now he was going to show me what *real* music was..and he put CCR on the record player and turned the volume up. I’ve never forgotten it, or the fact that many years later he got to take his own 20 yo son to see CCR..and now we’ll into his ‘70’s, he still plays in a band, at nursing homes for the folk of his generation, who love it!

My Uncle James fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He married our mum's older sister Ena and she emigrated to the States with him after WWII from Cardiff, Wales UK. In the '60s he was stationed in Lincoln, NE and my aunt summoned our mum to come visit. Aunt Ena took our mum to go see my Dad and Uncle George's (Jorge) band's gig at the University of Nebraska where they both attended as engineering students. They were both immigrant students from Bolivia. My twin brother and me arrived on the scene pretty quickly after that meeting. And that is how Welsh/Bolivians are minted in Lincoln, NE... lol. Uncle James was the very catalyst for us ever existing. He was also a second father to my twin brother and me. He taught us how to wrench cars. Cancer took him slow in the early '90s... I am very grateful for all his love and guidance. He retired from the Air Force as Chief Master Sgt head of the MPs on McChord Air Base in Lakewood, WA.
McChord is also where a young Airman would soak up all the Soul and Funk grooves from the other black Airmen musicians from the South that he served with him at McChord. When that kid got out of the Air Force, he became the drummer for one of my fav bands Tower of Power. I had no idea David Garibaldi spent time in our 'hood when we were just young kids.

When I was a kid in the 1970s, I asked my dad where the restaurant bathroom was located and he sang, "There's the bathroom on the right" while pointing in the direction of the bathroom door. To this day, I still remember him doing that!
My dad grew up in grinding poverty and in a dysfunctional home. He dropped out of high school after the 10th grade and joined the US Army in 1960.
A couple of years into his four-year hitch, he was asked to volunteer to go to Vietnam to serve as an advisor. He told me that he remembered a corporal telling his unit, "Don't EVER volunteer for ANYTHING!" He then admitted that he had never heard of Vietnam before. Remembering his corporal's voice, he DID NOT volunteer.
When I was in my 20s, I was helping my dad do some work in my parents' basement. He had the radio playing, and "Fortunate Son" began playing. I'll never forget my dad getting a a somber expression on his face as he said, "It ain't me; It ain't me." That was all he said.

Not only do I have "CHRONICLE" but hanging on my wall, with a 2-tone orange, and green label, is a 45 (rpm, for anyone who doesn't know) of "BAD MOON RISING" bought at the AAFES Public Exchange (PX) in Dallas, Texas. It was a late Christmas gift that arrived on January 23, 1976 (The PX wrote a note on the sleeve that they had notified my mom of its arrival.) The B side is "LODI" I can't tell you how many times this spun on my old suitcase-looking record player. It's amazing that it made it through all my rough times & is still in the plain white sleeve, still clean with no scratches or warping.
I always knew the words because I would play my favorite songs over & over with my earphone connected until I knew every word. But I can't listen to or even sing the song in my head with anything but the real true lyrics: "There's a bathroom on the right."

Back in 1987 or 88, John came to the Oshkosh Air Show in Wisconsin. He was staying in a Holiday Inn along with many WW2 aircraft owners. My friend gave him a ride in his P-51 and that night in the club , I was at a front table. About 10 PM , he and his followers came in and assumed a table higher up in the club. It was not long before the band started Proud Mary and stopped almost immediately. Then the leader said, let's get the writer of this song down here to play it for us. John came down and played a set of songs with the band. He saw us sitting near the stage and when he finished came directly to our table and sat down next to me. What happened next is why I am writing this story. While the band continued to play, their girl friends and wives were sitting behind us and started to berate John for taking away whatever from the band members, they were very rude and insulting. After a bit of time he turned around and apologized that they felt that way as it was not intended. He was a Saint from where I sat. He told the women that the band was one of the best he had ever worked without a practice. They still ragged on him and he was a perfect gentleman!. CCR put out great music and you can’t argue with the fact that nobody has a voice like John. CCR is a treasure of classic American Rock regardless of your political spectrum. You have to appreciate the talent. I personally … love their music. If, but and however. You do have to understand what some of the content means and appreciate it even if you didn’t agree with their themes. I think I can, because I believe my military career stood to defend everyone’s point of view and freedom to speak it. If nothing else.
I think your analysis of Bad Moon Rising is, as always, just spot on, Professor. My main point is off topic of that, but that another great CCR song, “Fortunate Son” was a favorite of deployed units to use as the background song in making Hooah videos of their operations. Our guys put one together from my last deployment to OEF and used Fortunate Son for videos of our helicopter ops. Being one of the Senior Warrants in our brigade, they were pretty stoked to show me before they uploaded it to social media, like our unit FB page. It was great, but I asked them if they knew what the background of the song was or what the lyrics even meant. They weren’t really understanding. I just advised them that first, it was written in a time when the draft was still active and it was about young men who didn’t have a say about going to war and that we were all volunteers. Also, there’s a gigantic element of mistrust of senior military leaders in it and I told them probably most importantly, the band might not like, probably wouldn’t like, their anti-war classic turned into the exact opposite thing.
And there’s Hooah videos out there with Bad Moon Rising too. I just always wondered if the band ever saw any of them and what they might have thought.

Until one day I was singing it while driving a girl around on a first date, trying to impress her. After the song was over, she enlightened me about the lyrics. After that she called me, Jive Ass Man everytime she saw me. Needless to say things didn't work out. She saw me years later at the mall, I was renting a tux for my brother's wedding, she stuck her head in the store and yelled at me, Oh now you want to be a Sharp Dressed Man !! I had to think for a minute and then busted out laughing. I had to explain to my friends and others in the store. To them it wasn't that funny. I tracked her down in the mall. We have been married for 25 years. I met John Fogerty when my dad Dickie Harrell drummer of the band Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps and my uncle backup singer Tommy Facenda. We were backstage at John's Concert at VA Beach Amp They presented him with a Bluecap like the band wore and made him an honorary Bluecap. They did that because John had been the one who inducted Gene Vincent and the Bluecaps into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The were talking about misheard lyrics because one of Gene's song was banded from the radio because of a misheard lyric on one of their songs. I was going to say something about my misheard ZZ Top lyric story, but my wife stopped me😂

Thanks for your stories. I play in a band, and we cover Bad Moon Rising. Sometime after we learned it, the guitarist said "there's a bathroom on the right," and we include it in the lyrics. It's part of our show: before we play the song, I'll say "I'm gonna need a mens' room - it's up on the right, isn't it?" Then we play the song, and for the first chorus we sing "there's a bathroom on the right." Geographically, we are just North of Lodi CA, which we consider the home of CCR. I don't know whether our guitarist came up with the phrase independently, or heard it through some vocal grapevine.

With AA batteries and no wires, this they could blare out whatever music was on the boombox next to it. It was CCR they were playing for the neighborhood. Everybody came outside to see where this sound was coming from. All of this was going on while my Father was singing along with the music!!!! Amazed does not begin to tell my reaction. I knew the words. I was in my early twenties and had been listening to music for almost ten years at this point. I thought I knew all there was to know about music. Turns out I didn't know squat about music and still don't. But I love the Professor of Rock.

I was at that CCR show at the Fillmore!!! I was a freshman at Stanford it was my very first live concert ever. I’m 73 almost 74 now and that concert turned me into a huge CCR fan. What a small world to actually have attended a concert The Professor talks about in a video. Great memories.

My parents were a part of the Baby Boomer Generation and they both really liked CCR’s music. I remember hearing a song or two of theirs on a local AM radio station growing up as a kid. The first time I heard the “bathroom on the right” misheard lyric was on a SNL Wayne’s World Special where they had a Top 5 misheard lyrics. It was pretty funny and I’ve referenced the song with the misheard lyric ever since. I have since downloaded the CCR greatest hits from iTunes.

Our ancient traveling jokes are to
    1) sing “On the road againnnn . . .” at the start of a trip, and after every rest stop,
    2) sing “There’s a bathroom on the right . . .” when one of us _needs_ a rest stop.
    3) sing “We gonna walk down to / Kmart* and buy some shoes; / they only cost a dollah . . .” when someone spots a sign for the store from the highway. *now, it’s “Walmart.”
    Another great video, Professor!

I am both astonished and appalled to learn CCR never had a #1 hit! Also, I can literally say I have never heard of the misheard lyrics you spoke of on here. "Bad Moon Rising" has been my second favorite song by CCR for about 20 years (prior to that, it was my absolute favorite, but it was at that time when I heard "Long As I Can See the Light," which immediately replaced it at the top of the list), and even when I was little (late 70s/early 80s) I always understood what he was saying just fine.
Speaking of "Long As I Can See the Light," if you want to cover the story behind that one, I would love to hear it! Or "Up Around the Bend" (which I still say had one of the greatest guitar riffs EVER; I will die on that hill!).
Love your videos, and been subscribed for at least a couple years now. I have to admit, though, that I don't watch most of your videos. I'm generally not interested in the story behind music that lies outside of my own musical tastes, and since you don't name the song, or even the artist in the video titles, I only watch when it's someone I recognize and am interested in since you generally have the artist pictured in the thumbnail, unless a video title catches my eye (but in a lot of those cases I end up only watching the first few minutes as it usually ends up being a song or artist that I don't like or don't know).

It's really amazing that John himself was prophesying about the future with out realizing it. Neil Peart did the same thing in many of Rush's songs as well. Hey God works in mysterious ways !

Another great video. I’ve got to add, I got two pair of Zenni glasses six months ago. Best eyewear decision I’ve ever made. Both frames and lenses are great. Getting all the lens add-ons does add up, but it’s still less expensive than local shops. My previous optician/eyewear shops gave me glasses that just didn’t work well for distance. I did my own prescription tweaking, sent it off to Zenni, and I just love these glasses.

I'm impressed that, despite how things were at the time, the members of CCR didn't do drugs or get drunk. In my mind, that makes them craftsmen, those dedicated to "doing the job right", and that always earns my respect. Always loved their songs, but that puts a new spin on it for me.

I was very young when I first heard CCR. I enjoyed listening to them then and to this day when they come on the radio I turn up the sound. I believe if they started their band today they would fall more into the country genre. Love the fact the CCR members made a pact not to do drugs and alcohol. Thank you CCR for not polluting your sound, your minds, and your actions. Love the sound of John Fogherty's voice. When I hear John Mellencamp sing I think of John Fogherty. I know they don't sound the same, I do think that John M could do a good job singing some CCR songs. Hope he sees this post.
Thank you for making this video on CCR's Bad Moon Rising and CCR. Also, thank you CCR for the music and showing that being drug and alcohol free in the music scene is possible.❤🌚

I'm the same age, but was already into music before the Beatles, because my mom was a classical pianist, my dad was a jazz pianist, and my older sisters were into rock.
My inspirations to take up guitar were Wes Montgomery, Paul Simon, and classical guitarist John Williams.
But I also fell in love with the Beatles when we saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Thank you for this facinating reveal of why the band fell apart and what kind of person Mr. Forgerty was and hardship he endured to somehow keep going. I never knew about the drug free stance the band had. This was a great band with an amazing string of hits. 'I Put A Spell On You' definitely put a spell on me in the beginning with this band and even his great solo tune 'Center Field' just made me happy every listening. Peace!

As a grade-schooler, I had two different friends that had terribly misheard lyrics. One thought the Go-Go’s “Our lips are sealed” was “Honest Lucille” and the other thought Pink Floyd’s “No dark sarcasm in the classroom” line from Another Brick In The Wall was “No ducks or chasms in the classroom.”
