I’ve gotta be honest I have no idea why Colonial Marines lasting impact was tons of people saying “clearly Aliens games don’t work” and not, why doesn’t someone just make the fucking game in the first demo trailer that everyone loved
As a long time fan of the ALIEN series and ACM i applud you on a fair review on a great fun game that Randy Pitchford mis- managed, aka ballsed up! To this day it is still my favorite ALIENS game of all time. Infact in got me back into the ALIEN franchise again, even joining the NZCM, New Zealand Colonial Marines costuming group. Thank you again Oohraa marine 👍
Happy for you bro, this game could have been much better but with a few tweaks it aint bad and people gave it a much harder time because of what the devs have done and not necessarily just because the game was poor, i still like to replay it & the stasis interrupted dlc. My all time favorite is the 2010 AVP, it really holds up, AvP 1& 2 are awesome of course and probably the best in the franchise but they need a remake for sure. My current new favorites are Fireteam Elite & Dark Descent, both solid games in different genres, but the "best" entry in the Aliens franchise has to be Alien isolation, wich is crazy since it came out not long after Colonial Marines.
I know generally speaking this game was widely panned and despised by the fan base but I personally enjoyed playing this game with my wife on Co-op for many times running through the entire game we had the time of our life so I've got nothing bad to say about this game.
Glad there where some mods out there giving this game the love it deserves for everyone who hated this game on release its getting to a stage where alit of the original alien and aliens cast are getting elderly or have punched out already Hudson ash Kane will never reprise their roles again unless by ai I think there is parts of alien colonial marines that are worth saving stasis interrupted dlc should have been free it was such a core part of all the story
omfg....i can relate! I waited 12 freaking years for this and i went all out preordered the collectors edition. On the day of release, my cousin called me at 6am and told me 'I'm sorry man. I'm sorry.' I'm like, oh hell naw! Checked gamespot review and telling myself 'Its ok! its probably from a non Aliens fan.' lol I played it, and i have never been so disappointed in my entire life. We dont get alot of Aliens games while Halo fans can get a crappy game but still get more Halo games. This hits hard.
So, I have the most random side story to your very entertaining video...seriously was my recollection of the entire debacle. I was working in the game industry and made friends with someone at sega (we worked within 5 blocks I think). So, before I think an office move or something, I was invited to come grab some promo swag from the "closet". She knew I love aliens, so there was just a..very very cool large box of "alien stuff I found"... concept art, a zip up hoody, a few collector statues..and what I considered the biggest jaw drop..was 4 huge HUGE vinyl back drops, I assume for trade shows..it was honestly the oddest alien come up, alot more I don't recall off the head (was about 10 years ago I think...) but I'd meet someone who shares the xenomorph obsession I do, I'd unload some of this box of swag I hung on to. Anyhow..Great video and thought I'd share.
I was so excited for this game as I was/am a huge alien fan as well as a huge fan of that Avp game from 2010. I had it fully paid for with the pre order. They day of I couldn’t help but watch some gameplay and a brief review during study hall…. That was all I needed. I went to GameStop after school and switched my pre order to bioshock infinite, the guy was like “good call”. It’s okay though because we got alien isolation which was everything we have always wanted!
I'm just glad Aliens: Fireteam Elite exists now, between that and Alien Isolation we still have decent modern... ish, Games to play. Only just started playing Alien Isolation again to continue from getting the trauma kit after chickening out a couple years ago, love the game but man that Xenomorph AI is terrifying
The double barrel is a reference to the Allen Dean Foster Novelization of Aliens. In the book that's what Hicks' shotgun originally is. He pulls it out of his combat leg armor. I believe the book has Hicks reference it as a "Heirloom"
As someone who has almost 200 hours in A:CM (yes, I'm that insane), I really gotta say this an extremely well-made video! I'm one of the few people who can say I didn't mind the game's problems when it came out, and the mod truly does give fans what we should've expected from day 1. I'm glad to see someone still having fun with it! ^^
really enjoyed the video hex, bug hunt was very fun, I completely forgot we played through the campaign that time must've been over a year ago at least XD
Great video the beginning had me laughing and almost crying because I was hyped hard af too.😂😂😂😂😂 The end about the Templar mod was spot on. I got major replay value because of it. Especially bug hunt where you can make it so unlimited corpses stay on the ground. 🤤 🤤🤤 In fact I am going to replay it all again soon with the mod.
About the "crusher" / rhino alien, it was probably some form of cattle. Bulls are known to be big and charge. However, the game should have had some cattle remains in the game as evidence of such a thing.
The biggest problem with this game is that gear box bought it off of another company that bought it off of another company that bought it off of another company that went out of business. It mostly completed at that time, and was about ten years old at that point. Gear Box did very little work on the game play and graphics of the game and spent most of budget they had for it on borderlands 2
Honestly best part of this game was the Left for Dead style game mode where Marines went from safe room to safe room, while Aliens tried to stop them. It was by far the most intense the game got. With humans taking control of the Aliens they could actually be a threat and the one life the Marines had made both sides actually think and the motion tracker was so useful. I remember playing with friends with someone always being our "motion tracker bitch" and the the thrill it was calling out where they were coming from or being told where to look, just in the nick of time. Then when we were Aliens it was so fun having one or two people play the distraction, screwing around with them on the motion tracker. So the others could ambush. Then seeing the Marine players adapt to us. Making us mix things up. No other game has really replicated that feeling in my friend group. Which is something I will always praise the game for. Just wish the game was better overall. Also I don't think it was just because the game had to come out on consoles the graphics had such a downgrade. I know games have to be toned down for the consoles but just compare this game on 360 to say Halo 4 that came out a year prior. Or heck even Halo 3 that came out 5 years before Colonial Marines. It looks worse in almost every way. The game being on console wasn't the reason it looks bad, it was just a rushed job with not enough time, people and money behind it.
One detail almost everyone misses, is that the Queen can grab you if you run under her, regardless of your health/shield. The killing animation is pretty nice.. until you fall, lmao Also you forgot one thing, in the Overhaul mod, you can change the Smartgun's HUD, and it disables auto-aim, just like AvP3!
Hey hex, don’t know if you remember, but I do. I remember the day I was playing Cu Chi or Hue City. Playing with you and how I told you in chat that you were the one that got me to play RS2V. Gotta say without you, I would’ve missed out a lot of fun, especially with the friends I made in that game. Hope you have a good one - Mexican Immigrant
theres a fix for this overhaul mod also on mod db that fixes the ai even further, adds more graphic fidelity, and fixes the crashes on status interrupted its called: TemplarGFX's ACM Overhaul Mod Crash Fix and Patrxgt Ultra Config. it came out this year in 2024.
Smells like an executive decision to me. See, investors usually inject a huge payload of money into a project and expect a quick return from it, with pompous interests of course, and that's where all the problems begin. To appease those investors, rushing executives tend to go over their dev's team advice about the right schedules and resources, usually by shrinking both to milk even more money. They can even affect game classification during its mid-development, altering the gore and detail levels to appeal to a broader age range of players - a task that will lead to a lot of rework, worse, without any clear salary adjustment for the workers. So, the closer the deadline, the more feature droppings will happen bc wrong decisions have been made at the wrong timeframe, all for the sake of keeping a smile on the investors' faces. Then the game is released. It bombs. Investors are not pleased. Executives blame/badmouth devs and punish them, even firing them to diminish losses. Let's face it, NO DEV wants to deliver a bomb to the public, they want to be recognized for their work. All of this happened before and is happening again.
The tether AI typo fix only tethers the enemy to the player so they don't laughably wander around. It makes the game both difficult and easier. Difficult because enemies now rush at you more, easier because they're closer to shoot if you see them.
Just bought and installed the Collection edition for £5.19 before watching all of your video when you gave it a 4/10. 6/10 with mod is worth the price for me and in the mood try out an Aliens shooter tied to the 2nd film.
I wish devs would allow online matches to be created without human players if none are found, optionally fill open slots with AI, but in the server browser show the human player only (1) in the match, then replace the AI with a human players when slots are filled. This will let people searching for a game see that there are matches available, instead of thinking no one is playing, which kills the online longevity.
There was a Colonial Marines collectors edition in my local store for years. Cost 20 bucks and i never bothered. Now i kinda regret it. Not because of the game, but that powerloader statue for 20 bucks would have been a nice purchase.
I feel so sorry for console players. They never got TemplarGFX 6.2 version of A:CM. It's day and night difference to stock. It is such a beautiful game and story. It's the Aliens sequel I always wanted. Esp. SI. Also acmv140+6tr
I remember picking up alien colonial marines on Walmart and they ask my age to play the game but they said nah just give the money n you go home play game 😊
That's fine, you aren't unique. There are millions of people out there with low expectations and a propensity to throw their money away for garbage. It's not uncommon.
just started playing this tonight and took a break and found your video. I agree 100 percent with everything you've felt/said/opined on. My god this mod is hard though lol. Only problem I'm having is weird gray gray graphics at a distance. Otherwise I'm having a great time with this, using a controller no less!
Can you please tell me how you're getting it to work on pc with a controller? My son wants to play this game soooo bad but I can't get a controller to work :/ :(
I never understanded the hate on this game, to me this is easily one of the best Alien games ever made. I would love to see a remake for it, or at least a simple release on modern consoles. The multiplayer feature would be really interesting to see on modern consoles too.
If you can’t understand the hate, I’m not sure what you are able to understand about anything. There are objective issues with the game whether you like it or not.
@@Hexdkit’s not that he likes the game. It’s that he seems to think that there’s near nothing wrong with it. It’s not like the criticisms of the game are vague
Since 1986 I've always thought that Ripleys taped up Flamethrower/Pulse Rifle had to have been a heavy weapon on top of also carrying a pre-teen child around while fighting, running, and killing multiple aliens without even tripping herself up not even one single time....JS
They actually had to give her a doll that resembled Newt while shooting the movie. So Ripley did mission impossible xD.. But its why i love her character. And women nowadays say there are no great female action heroes. Ugh..
I too was very excited to recieve this game on release. Sadly I didn't buy it after seeing how terribly made it was. Even worse still I didn't buy the next installment which actually not only formed out to be good but , attained legendary status. Alien isolation. I waited to buy isolation but once I heard it was good I bought it and was SO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. Alien isolation IMHO was a9.75 out of 10 and have beaten this 40+ times. Still wanna play it more. But now after having this recommended in going to give colonial marines a shot with the Templar gfx mod. TBH on just excited to play isolation 2.
My game doesn’t load up it closes as soon as I try to launch can someone please help I’ve tried verifying the game files didn’t work I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no dice Someone pleeease help me
I remember the fact that Sega came in and deleted EVERYTHING, the backups the main code, which was almost completed.... the "lies" were SEGA claiming that they wanted to have GBG make a game the fans wanted, the lies were SEGA wanted Call of Duty but with Xenomorphs... they used a team of developers to delete the original code and replace it with what SEGA wanted... CoD, but due to Gearbox's code being the way it is... delete 1 piece and the whole thing breaks.... but SEGA already had the team delete the back up's all because they had had inside info that while ACM was in the final polish phase, GBG needed to shuffle some resources around cos of Borderlands 2 was slipping behind the development time... work didn't stop on ACM until SEGA came in and demanded all work on ACM to be handed over, claiming that GBG had breached the contract.... after deleting the backup's and buggering the code, and their up and coming dev team who wanted to impress their new bosses couldn't figure out how to fix what they had broken at the order of SEGA... SEGA ran back to GBG and demanded that they fix the game... which would wouldn't have needed fixing if SEGA hadn't have stormed in and deleted everything.... GBG was set up to fail, due to the deletion and destruction of the backups, rebuilding the game would be nothing close to what was originally created.... and as such... would most likely take many more years... SEGA gave them mere weeks... what we got was a damned miracle they even managed that.... GBG even offered to fix and work on updates and code which would have to be released after SEGA's decision to release anyway.... when the Modding Community suggested that they could possibly fix it or do what they could to at least try.... GBG was supportive of this suggestion, and was prepared to release the SDK for ACM, however ultimately SEGA chose to cut losses and refuse the SDK to the community, in their minds SEGA wanted GBG to take the fall and they wanted to bury the game.... and focus on Alien Isolation instead... the ironic thing is, SEGA did a similar thing to Rebellion with Aliens vs Predator 2010.... and the developers of Shogun Total War.... it seems that everyone who is contracted by them to make a game or project.... the door only swings one way in SEGA's eyes.... yet despite the lack of an SDK the modding community, like TemplarGFX and the mod which was called Just Another Bug Hunt... which the latter I helped test for a while.... did remarkable jobs in bringing back the feel of a game that was snuffed out too soon.... due greed or ignorance or impatience or even just a personal issue against what the fans actually wanted.... we never wanted a CoD Aliens game, but SEGA seem to be no different to most AAA developer these days who assume they know better and know what the fans want more than the fans...
@@Hexdk not so much direct inside knowledge, I just mod tested with people who did... and SEGA did the same thing to Rebellion too which seems like the way they avoid keeping to the contracts they make
@@Hexdk some of the things I do believe they could have improved for the game to at least soften the blow of shame.... Bug Hunt should have been objective based... similar to the 4v4 escape mode.... but kept the hoard stand your ground style at least until an APC came to rescue Escape should have had Xenomorph AI in overwhelming numbers with the objective to reach the extraction... Extermination should have been PVE too and each batch of eggs you destroy should have upped the level of Xenomorph threat, so start with drones, then Lurkers, then Preatorians, and so on... Custom map support so we could have made our own maps or the map making community could for it... and a custom game settings would have been a huge benefit for the multiplayer aspect too these would have resulted in a game that would have not been viewed as a complete fail.... also removal of that tethering system to allow for players to explore, to find the hidden items etc... and that ridiculous every time you get to a certain point your character is locked with their gun next to their head and their other hand on their comms device.... there's been a few times where a xeno has slipped past certain points and I've been killed by them cos my character chose to have a length discussion on comms... the mod I really wish had continued was from a guy called Preatorian if i remember correctly, and added objectives to the Bug Hunt mode, along with welding/cutting and a more logical spawn of Xenos who also went after the few Mercs who spawned in at certain points... along with some levels between every 5th level which added the blind exploding kamakazi Xenos into the mix... but you had to be very quiet or risk them finding you... then on every 5th wave you'd have Xeno's and a boss Xeno... I really wish I'd still got the backup for it cos that was seriously fun.... also weapons were closer to their movie versions too
Does anyone know how to get a ps4 controller on PC to work with this game other than ds4? Ds4 doesn't seem to work for it. Or does anyone know how to play it on ps4?
I don't know how Pitchford is even still allowed to be in a game company after this. There are a lot of cases of unknown companies scamming people and doing nothing to make it right. That's bad enough as it is, but this was the president of a AAA developer who lied to millions of people and did nothing to make it right. They cared so little about the game and the people who bought it that the Alien AI remained broken for years after release, only to be fixed by a modder who realized what the devs didn't care enough to - that there was a one letter typo in the code. One letter, and the devs couldn't be bothered. Bad writing, bad plot, plot holes, fighting humans more than aliens in an alien game.. the bait and switch of the graphics, UI and so many other things.. Battlefield 3 came out a year and a half earlier, was also released on consoles, and had to be made to run well with way more going on, much more in sight being rendered, many more effects going off at any moment, while in a jet flying super fast across the map and rendering even more at once, with 24-64 players on multiplayer servers. Despite all of these things that make BF3's visual clarity more difficult to achieve with good performance, they did it, and the game still looks good to this day. Not only did Gearbox completely fail to deliver on their promises, behind the scenes they outsourced development, showing even more how little they cared. There is no excuse for what Gearbox did, especially after showing and promising something completely different; something completely better.
Gearbox needs to get off their lazy butts thank this man and properly get his finished version of c.m out as remastered version on current gen consoles anyone agree yes or no ?
It was a huge disappointment. Alien isolation made me feel better... but i was looking forward to see with my own eyes LV 426 and go on a bug hunt...but it was caca...😢
I got the ACM on xbox 360 when the game came out.. I was hyped as hell. I remember going trough first few lvls thinking wtf is going on, where are all the aliens?? Why do i keep fighting PMCs?? Campagn was so boring.. i hated it Then i jumped into MP and that was only saving grace for this game Idk how the devs could fk this up so much.... Now i have it on steam, sad its nearly impossible to play MP Note: i loved the small retcon of alien 3 with Hicks being alive. Loved it ( i hate alien 3)
You are welcome!

Can I pay you to mod out the cash register sfx that plays exclusively in Bug Hunt mode?

There was a Colonial Marines collectors edition in my local store for years. Cost 20 bucks and i never bothered. Now i kinda regret it. Not because of the game, but that powerloader statue for 20 bucks would have been a nice purchase.
Maybe you can get lucky on Ebay.
I remember being so damn hype for this game. 10mins in…. hype died real quick
The review embargo told me it was going to be bad. Held off and glad I did!
I feel so sorry for console players. They never got TemplarGFX 6.2 version of A:CM. It's day and night difference to stock. It is such a beautiful game and story. It's the Aliens sequel I always wanted. Esp. SI. Also acmv140+6tr
Great review! Well done
I remember picking up alien colonial marines on Walmart and they ask my age to play the game but they said nah just give the money n you go home play game 😊
I liked this game when it came out.
I still like this game.
I don't care what anyone says.
My son wants to play this game soooo bad but I can't get a controller to work :/ :(
@@Rysdad1 I just plug my Xbox 1 controller in and it works
I never understanded the hate on this game, to me this is easily one of the best Alien games ever made. I would love to see a remake for it, or at least a simple release on modern consoles. The multiplayer feature would be really interesting to see on modern consoles too.
If you can’t understand the hate, I’m not sure what you are able to understand about anything. There are objective issues with the game whether you like it or not.
@@ExpertContrarian Don't insult the man, just because he likes the game.

Missed your vids man!
this game isnt as bad as people say . once you patch it and remove the path bug for the xenos its freaking fun
Your friend saying "it wont make any difference" felt like it had infinitely more soul and taste than any reference in the game propper
Ugh..
@@czechultimatestylewomen 5 years ago tbh a lot has changed since that girl boss talk first started
I honestly think another company should have a go at redoin the game with a better storyline
Thanks for thé vidéo.😉
My game doesn’t load up it closes as soon as I try to launch can someone please help I’ve tried verifying the game files didn’t work I tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no dice Someone pleeease help me
We remember.
yeah with the mod on, it keeps crashing after i save the first marine
Great video 👍, I have a question is there a way to add in Bots in Multiplayer modes like Escape.
No, not that I know of.
CoD, but due to Gearbox's code being the way it is... delete 1 piece and the whole thing breaks.... but SEGA already had the team delete the back up's
all because they had had inside info that while ACM was in the final polish phase, GBG needed to shuffle some resources around cos of Borderlands 2 was slipping behind the development time... work didn't stop on ACM until SEGA came in and demanded all work on ACM to be handed over, claiming that GBG had breached the contract....
after deleting the backup's and buggering the code, and their up and coming dev team who wanted to impress their new bosses couldn't figure out how to fix what they had broken at the order of SEGA...
It sound like you had some real inside
knowledge.
There are things I've never heard of before.
Bug Hunt should have been objective based... similar to the 4v4 escape mode.... but kept the hoard stand your ground style at least until an APC came to rescue
Escape should have had Xenomorph AI in overwhelming numbers with the objective to reach the extraction...
Extermination should have been PVE too and each batch of eggs you destroy should have upped the level of Xenomorph threat, so start with drones, then Lurkers, then Preatorians, and so on...
Custom map support so we could have made our own maps or the map making community could for it... and a custom game settings would have been a huge benefit for the multiplayer aspect too
these would have resulted in a game that would have not been viewed as a complete fail....
also removal of that tethering system to allow for players to explore, to find the hidden items etc... and that ridiculous every time you get to a certain point your character is locked with their gun next to their head and their other hand on their comms device.... there's been a few times where a xeno has slipped past certain points and I've been killed by them cos my character chose to have a length discussion on comms...
the mod I really wish had continued was from a guy called Preatorian if i remember correctly, and added objectives to the Bug Hunt mode, along with welding/cutting and a more logical spawn of Xenos who also went after the few Mercs who spawned in at certain points...
along with some levels between every 5th level which added the blind exploding kamakazi Xenos into the mix... but you had to be very quiet or risk them finding you... then on every 5th wave you'd have Xeno's and a boss Xeno... I really wish I'd still got the backup for it cos that was seriously fun....
also weapons were closer to their movie versions too
Thank god for Templar gfx …
Love your vids hex
thoughts on Aliens Fire team?
Not yet, but eventually I will cover it.
I missed all this only found out about this game years later when I got it on sale for 12$, I liked it a lot never understood all the hate it got
It’s as if buying it for 12 bucks is different that 65 dollars retail at launch 😂
@@CoercedJab Nobody said it was

Does anyone know how to get a ps4 controller on PC to work with this game other than ds4? Ds4 doesn't seem to work for it. Or does anyone know how to play it on ps4?
Hey man, do you know why in templar mod i cannot pick up ammo of the guns, sometimes it says full, or a symbol of prohibited
Sorry I don't know. Meby in the Stream forum you can find someone who do.
Some guy/modder fixed it as the dev team messed up the Alien AI and it was just one wrong letter in the coding.

The only good thing about this game was the resin figure that came with the collector ed.
I was expecting more of a AVP 2 Evolution of Fear Marine gameplay
Im in the minority that loved this game. I spent so many hours with the multiplayer on ps3. I wish there was a way to get matches on ps3.
Question? How do you weld a door open. You weld it shut and cut it open. Dah.
Only in some of the multiplayer maps, can you weld doors open, and shut again.
They need to remake it and do it right
29:44 😅😂
I loved this game
I did like the multiplayer a lot even though it was unbalanced at times.
Also Templare is awesome I just wanna know how to get mod and if someone’s down to try everything with me :3

It was a huge disappointment. Alien isolation made me feel better... but i was looking forward to see with my own eyes LV 426 and go on a bug hunt...but it was caca...😢

Idk how the devs could fk this up so much....
