This is, to my knowledge, the ONLY place on the internet where I've seen this explained in this manner. Even in my Kaplan MCAT books, they do not do this. In my opinion, this is much better
yes...goddamn textbooks confusing the hell out of me. I can't believe how much this simple approach is going to change my life henceforth. A hearty thanks.
was totally a joke btw, you can't marry a brain =D but I do admire your ability to bring chemistry down to a level thats easily understandable by those that have chemlexia
This method really is far superior and also much more intuitive to understand. Thank you. I found this method in another place a few years ago and you have helped me to relocate it. Makes me wonder why they keep pushing the other approach - this cuts to it much more directly.
Wow, you got yourself a new subscriber. I also took your video and pasted it in the comments of another video to show them how it is suppose to be done. The "should"-"has" technique. Thanks and I will be checking out more videos RIGHT NOW.
You are the best!! I see a lot of organic videos but you explain well and give shortcuts !! You are making me to love organic Chem a little bit more :)
Thank you for sharing this method. I used the traditional method on a quiz & took too much time. I have 1 question. I don't know how to apply this approach when I am given only the Condensed Formula. Do you have a video addressing this concern? BTW, I was asked to computer FC for (CH3)2CNNH2 Great content. Will recommend to my friends.

Leah4sci your video helped me a lot.. but damn the exam was a nightmare.. probably the toughest paper in all these years.. preparing for other exams now😃
Sister,is it possible to calculate formal charge without the info about lone pairs an atom has.I mean if structure is given how do we know how many lone pairs an atom has?
This is something you need to memorize for organic chem. See the list of atoms I show you to memorize in the 'periodic table' video leah4sci.com/introorgo

fantastic method leah! That formula was tedious and you made it easy for me!! Thanks.. I want to see your video on Mole concept( Including equivalence and calculation of n-factor) N-factor freaks me out!!
What if your teacher doesn’t include the drawn out electrons? When you get to the “Has” do you just add the electrons from the table to the ones in the bonds?

Question:From where is an extra electron coming on oxygen if H has 1 and O has 6 how are there 7 electrons on O. Similarly in the example of NO3 how does e have 7 electron outside while it should have 6 is N giving electrons? Please tell me how. Please reply as soon as possible.

Why do teachers commonly make things as complicated as possible? My chem teachers assign 3x the work of my other classes combines. It's unfair. then they do stuff like this, making uncomplicated things complicated. Thanks for letting us know how to do this without making it hard for no reason!!!
Thanks for watching and asking! Formal charges can be calculated for any covalent compound (for which a Lewis structure can be drawn). This concept is first taught in general chemistry and continues to have applications in organic chemistry classes.
I'm sorry, but I don't offer tutoring over social media . For help with questions like this and more, I recommend joining the organic chemistry study hall. Details: leah4sci.com/join or contact me through my website leah4sci.com/contact/
You would do it the same way: Should-Has. Read this: leah4sci.com/formal-charge-formula-and-shortcut/ If you're having trouble with this topic, I recommend joining the organic chemistry study hall for more help: leah4sci.com/join
Wow! That shortcut was a game changer for me. Thanks! Your basics series is the most helpful tool I have found.

Just reviewed this video because I'm going back and redoing basic chem, and I needed to review this part, I'm about to go to resonance structures.
So happy I could help!
OMG!!! I've been struggling with formal charges and trying to remember that loooong formula, you made it SO EASY AND SIMPLE!!!! THANK YOU!!
Glad the video helped you understand the topic better! You're welcome! :)
I just want to marry your brain....me and chemistry don't get along... yet i had to take 15 months worth of chemistry.. and you have been a savior...
