    The video series on hybridization did a great job helping me understand it conceptually rather than just being able to identify species hybridization based on appearance. The vids help so much more than my textbook lol

    At 12:10 i guess you miscount the carbon atom that's attached to the oxygen atom by sigma and pie bond, which makes it 12 atoms that are sp2 hybridized....!

    i passed organic chemistry by some miracle a year and a half ago now im going into university and are already acredited for organic 1 so im going straight into organic 2. Using your videos to go over the complete course and hopefully not struggle in the fall. So far the video explained concepts i left confused super well. Thank you so much.

    Carbon has sp3 hybridization , it can form bonds through one s and 3 p orbitals,
    How did you know that a bond of p orbital was missing, The s orbital could had lone electron , not???

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, don't forget to study the ground state configuration so you know where the electrons reside initially. See my series here: leah4sci.com/introorgo

    Thank you for these wonderful videos! If you would be able to just clarify one thing? At 6:59, the carbon is single bound to a hydrogen, and it looks to me like the other lobe of the same sp orbital is then sigma binding to the adjacent carbon atom, would this not make 4 electrons in an orbital? One from each hydrogen (assuming both carbons have one hydrogen) and one from each carbon? Would there not be an sp orbital joining the hydrogen to the carbon and then another joining the carbon to carbon?

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  ปีที่แล้ว

      A single orbital can only hold 2 electrons. Each carbon in acetylene has 2 sp orbitals - one of those overlaps with the 1s atomic orbital of hydrogen and one of those overlaps with another sp orbital from the adjacent carbon. In both cases of 'overlap', only two electrons are present.

    Hi Leah, great video! I had a question about the question at the end where you counted 11 sp2 orbitals. Is that because each of the resonance oxygens counts as half?

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! I actually had an error in this video. You can see the note in the description that says:
      Note: At 12:12, the count of sp2 hybridized atoms is incorrect. There are 12 (not 11) sp2 hybridized atoms in this structure.

    why does nitrogen have a lone pair?

    • @Leah4sci
      @Leah4sci  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons. In this particular structure, three of those have been used in single bonds to adjacent carbons. That leaves two electrons remaining in a lone pair on the nitrogen itself.
