- My first day in Phnom Penh, Cambodia was all set to be an epic day until I sadly encountered this... Besides this event I did enjoy the the beauty of a modern city, exploring historical landmarks and enjoying some famous fish amok as well. Hopefully the rest of my time here in Cambodia isn't as rough.

Nice your in Cambodia. Cambodia is an underrated country. Yeah , Cambodia is poorer country compared to the neighbors. Due to the past dark history that happen which set the country far back. But the country is modernizing pretty fast. Hope you enjoy the country, culture, food, and people overall. .People there are very nice. Should visit Angkor Wat it is a UNESCO world heritage. There are beaches there also. You should reach out to youtuber - Cambo vlogs, he a American who lives in Cambodia & can speak the language pretty well. Mark didn't seem like a bad person, just trying to make a living. They were hit hard during covid and as they rely on tourism. Cambodia did recently open back up for tourism. Take care and enjoy your travels and time in Cambodia.
80% of the people of Cambodia is under 40. They have one of the youngest populations in Asia because of war. They are right behind Syria, Iraq, Laos and Pakistan.
Dave, the first rule you need to learn in Cambodia is ignore the tuk tuk drivers, because they will ALL rip you off, no matter how friendly they may seem.

Be super aware of your surroundings while in Cambodia. Lots of kidnapping cases for ransom or scam syndicates in the news lately 😢

The kidnapping cases are mostly related to casino and gambling especially Chinese and Taiwanese Chinese. As long as you don't go to casino or involve in gambling activities, it will not happen to you. However, be aware of pickpocket and phone/bag snatching along the street.

Because the Economic Exclusion Zone status of the casinos there, the local authorities have no jurisdiction, so people will get kidnapped there and nothing ever happens to get them out.
The truth history about Cambodia is not what you get from your Tuk Tuk driver. In 1802 after Nguyen Phuc Anh become an Emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, he invaded and expelled the Thai overlord with the exception of Siem Reap and Battambong remained under the Thai controlled. The rest of Cambodia were under the Vietnamese controlled. The Nguyen classified all Vietnamese as HAN Nhen and inaugurated the Chu-HAN as the national administration language which was know as the Mandarin. When Ang Chan II died in 1834, the Vietnamese placed Ang Mey to be queen of Cambodia. By this time the entire administration in Cambodia were filled with Vietnamese official including Cambodia region of Prey Norkor (Saigon). Ang Duong with the Thai help failed to expelled the Vietnamese from Cambodia but end up with the joint suzerainty between the Thai and Vietnamese and he had to paid tribute to both the Thai and Vietnamese. The French slowly making inroad into southeast Asia and Ang Duong had the idea of seeking the French help to protect Cambodia territory integrity. Ang Duong died in 1860, the Thai released his eldest son Norodom to be crowned as Cambodia King in 1860. With Khmer Prince Sisowath help, the French captured Prey Norkor (Saigon) in 1858 and made it a French colony 1862 called Cochin China because Saigon was filled with refugee from the dying Ming Dynasty in the late 1700th century and Khmer. Followed up with his father idea, Norodom made the entire Cambodia the French protectorate in 1863. Rebellion against the French happened as soon as the second year of Cambodia become the French protectorate. All anti-French rebellion were put down with the help of Prince Sisowath from his base in Prey Norkor (Saigon). For his help, the French rewarded Sisowath and crowned him as Cambodia King in 1904 instead of Norodom eldest son Norodom Duongchak. If all anti-French rebellion in Cambodia were put down with the help of Prince Sisowath from his base in Prey Norkor (Saigon), then the entire Mekong delta was still a Khmer territory before the French Protectorate. It was the French import of the Chu-Han (Mandarin) to run its administration in Cambodia that caused Cambodia to loose the Mekong Delta to the Vietnamese. The Brevie Line in 1939 become the de factor border of Cambodia and Vietnam. For Khmer reader, the three competing princes after Ang Duong was Norodom, Sisowath and Si Votha.
Norodom Base was in Phnom Penh, Sisowath stronghold was in Prey Norkor (Saigon) and 10 years after Norodom crowned as King, Si Votha stronghold was in Kratie, Cambodia. The pro-French was Sisowath and the Anti-French was Si Votha. The Chu-Han (Mandarin) remained the administrator Cambodia officialdom and most rebellion against the French were waged by these people. It was during the 10 years rebellion waged against the French by Prince Si Votha that Pol Pot's grandfather killed by the French trapped because he was help organized supplies for rebellion.
