- We start our Real Cambodia series by delving deep into the capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.
We begin our Cambodia vlog today by setting off to explore the Royal Palace which is one of the top things to do in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Royal Palace is not too big, making it pleasant to walk around, it is also very well maintained and beautiful so it really is an enjoyable place to check out when in Phnom Penh Cambodia. We do advise going early in the morning in order to avoid the afternoon heat.
After checking out the Royal Palace we make our way down to the Ton Le Sap where we went for a lovely stroll along the banks of the river. Phnom Penh is located around the convergence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap River. The riverside promenade has a lovely sidewalk to walk along. Here you can see a lot happening, just like Laos the Mekong River is always a hub of activity.
After the Royal palace, we decide to escape the heat by enjoying a nice cold coffee in a café with a view of the Mekong Riverside. We loved how good the coffee was and it was really affordable. In fact, Phnom Penh has a variety of cafes and restaurants that serve local as well as international cuisine, at affordable rates.
Later on in the evening, we make our way back to the river to experience the lively evening life and watch the sunset. This is another one of the popular things to do in Phnom Penh, and it was the perfect time to be out as the weather cools down around sunset in Cambodia and makes it pleasant to walk around. We saw a few sunset cruises on the Mekong River, lots of people working out and in general a vibe of community.
Our day 2 in Phnom Penh starts with a brunch at a really nice café. This is quite an important day as went learnt a lot about the history of Cambodia. It was not easy to see but we are grateful to have a deeper knowledge of the countries past and we urge others to take some time to learn when visiting Cambodia.
Our next was at the Genocide Museum, it was once a school but then turned into a prison called S-21 used by the Khmer Rouge regime, led by Pol Pot. Walking around and seeing what went on during the genocide was heartbreaking. After getting a history of the Khmer Rouge and seeing where it all happened, we made our way to the killing fields. This has to be one of the saddest places we have walked around. As much as it is hard to face it is important to learn and experience these moments for yourself.
We can say with confidence that Cambodia is a must travel destination in Asia in 2024. We were taken back by how modern the city of Phnom Penh was and how foreigner and budget friendly everything is in Cambodia.
Getting around is very easy, a lot of people speak English making it very easy to ask for help and people in general just want to help you.
So, what do you think? Is Cambodia worth visiting? Hope you enjoyed our first impressions of Phnom Penh. Stay tuned for an episode of our Finding the Real Cambodia series.

We love Cambodia and are having the best time exploring the country. 🥰 Thank you for the support
Thank you for showing both sides of Cambodia. I think it's so important to show the world what can happen when genocides take place and how they have such devastating ripple effects for everyone. Maybe one day those responsible for these atrocities that still go on today will stop - I don't know. But, as harrowing and heart-wrenching as it was to watch your tour of the museum and killing fields, I am grateful for the awareness you have created and salute those who have survived. Enjoy your Cambodia travels!
Thanks a lot for your comment. We totally agree and feel that it is a responsibility for us to bring awareness to topics such as these that we learn from during our travels. The people of Cambodia have been unimaginable tragedies and we want to pay tribute to their courage, resilience and kindness in our future videos.💕
I love your video, and for sharing about Cambodia 🇰🇭. I am new friend ❤
Thanks a lot for the support ❤️ We feel it is a responsibility for us as travellers and to share what we learn during our travels, and learning about Cambodia’s history was eye-opening, and we have a lot of respect for the Cambodian people 💕
Important and instructive video. Words desert me. It is important that we get to see and understand the history of the horror that turned Cambodia, a beautiful country, into a mas grave. We must get to know what evil humans have done to other humans, and must try to understand WHY. The two places you covered are lessons for life, wherever one is. Thank you.
This might be a bit of a late comment but it always saddens me to think about what happened during the Khmer Rouge. In fact, every Cambodian in the country has been through or have immediate family members who went through the Khmer Rouge and a relative who lost their life under the KR. The part that saddens me the most is what Cambodia could’ve been without the Khmer Rouge. Sometimes I lay down at night and wonder what it would be like if I could actually meet my grandparents who died during the KR. I highly recommend you to watch some videos of Cambodia in the 1960s and 1970s right before the Khmer Rouge and you’ll be very surprised how prosperous Cambodia used to be.
I love Phnom Penh. It keeps changing and progressing every year.
