This film still holds up. I actually dont live too far from where this film was shot. It was filmed in Wallace Idaho. Many of the shots in this film were done using minitures, the bridge scene also used minitures for the bridge and the vehicles.
Fun fact the bridge scene was a model the entire set was a model the cars were little RC cars and the water was spilled from a small water tank. You never know until you see the behind the scenes blew me away.

As someone who saw this movie at the same age and was too scared to sit through it all, I apologize for the inconvenience. Saw those 2 teenagers in the hot spring that got boiled like lobsters, immediately started crying and dragged my dad out of the theater. He was pissed that he paid full price to see all of 10 minutes of a movie, lol. Good times.
Here is a little-known fact about pyroclastic surges. Although they reach temperatures of up to 1000* F and speeds of 300 mph, they instantly stall and cool down to room temperature when they reach the mouth of abandoned mines. /s
I remember watching this back in high school during science class. Our teacher was a fun guy to be around. At the scene where Dreyfus gets taken by the lahar, our teacher said "He just got "la-hard"." We couldn't stop laughing under our breath while watching the movie. Oh, good times.
I wish another volcanic movie will come next year. Maybe like Yellowstone movie or other big volcano. Because dantes peak and Volcano ( los angeles) is good movies
sadly for a fact on the late actor Charles Hallahn 1943-1997 this was one of his last films before he passed away from a Heart Attack while Driving his car from the very year of 1997 while he made his last ones from Ambushed (1998) as Sheriff Carter and The Fantasticks (2000) and Mind Rage (2001) as Sheriff and i do believe that was a film he was gonna be in but only played a small part from memory and well they probably did not release it as he died before it was completed if i remember rightly but yeah if he was alive today i know most people would love him in today,s films and that,s for sure.
@@heathercontois4501 It should be noted that CGI does have its place. Namely when you're dealing with situations that the cost (be it time or financial) is too constraining (you can only blow a miniature up once, and if something goes wrong, you gotta go through the whole process to do it again), or in situations where you're dealing with things that simply do not exist any more (for example the Japanese Fleet in WW2, or walking dinosaurs). The problem, at leas in my opinion, is when it's used in places where it isn't necessary, or is done in a way that doesn't blend well (at least when you're dealing with live action). Contrary to popular belief, CGI was used in the making of Dantes Peak. The "Making Of" video that came with the DVD does talk about this. Namely the wide shots that show the volcano, and the opening shot with the background volcanoes were all CGI. The former is a good example of it being used correctly, since the film makers wanted to give us this vibe of doom throughout the first couple acts, with the Volcano just looming over the town, and it's blended in so well that if you didn't know it was CG, you'd think they were filmed somewhere in the Cascades (where the film is set). The shots of the volcano actually erupting were also CG, but it was blended well with the practical effects of using ground up and wadded up newspaper to represent the ash fall. Couple this with all the other elements they used, and it's no wonder it holds up almost 30 years after release. It helps that much of the crew actually cared about what they were doing, compared to many film studios which just want to make money at the cost of everything else.
I have a view of Mt. Rainier. She is absolutely beautiful but is potentially the deadliest volcano in the United States. I hope we never see her erupt here in Western Washington State
I remember, I was so young when this was released, I was so impressed with awe, I watched it so many times, and I can watch it today with the same intrigue.
I don’t remember his name in the movie, but Tzi Ma is known - among other roles - as Cheng Zhi (Cheng Gow) from “24” Days 4, 5, 6, and “Live Another Day”.
A pyro ash cloud travels faster than a bus has a mean temperature of 1000 degrees centigrade and contains enough energy and superheated gas to wipe out an entire town.
The only not convincing detail to me, even back in the 90s, are the rock formations on the left & right, when the dam breaks. That definitely looks more fake than just fake. 😅 Everything else, even to this day, is exeptionaly good. The quality in general is impressive. And now that we have a "Twister" sequel, kinda, they should do more natural disaster movies in general. Another volcano movie with practical effects would be nice. It is possible. Another very good presentation of a volcanic eruption, though using CGI in part, is also 90s "Congo" in the finale. The "Volcano" movie with Tommy Lee Jones is good too, in it's own way, though here it lacks the believability, I guess, because it's in the middle of a city. To be fair, it's a "what if" scenario. The 90s pushed effects quite a lot, mixing both areas for the best outcome. Usualy. It's still such a shame models & big sets (with certain effects on site) are mostly gone today. CGI is very good, but it became the easy, lazy solution for everything, and especialy Disney proved it can get very faketastic at times.
In addition to the eruption of Mont Pelee, Archaeologists also found remains of a group of people who hid from Vesuvius in a cellar and initially survived the pyroclastic flow. It’s thought they later smothered to death because they were trapped, but they initially survived the flow. So it is possible. Improbable, perhaps, but possible.

Knowing that scream, even in the most serious of scenes, makes me smile.

Funny thing, the eruption effects were so well done some documentaries used them to depict real eruptions.
Honestly this is better than todays special effects
Scale models are always better than CGI. Imagine the amount of work put into making those scenes look real. The bridge scene alone is mind blowing.

Some of the best SFX from any movie ever. Even today the movie looks fantastic.

These are the best miniatures..so believable!!
All practical effects. My son was 8 years old and this scene scared him even though we told him it was not real. Just a movie.

Except it could be real. Lots of dormant volcanos on the west coast, not to mention the monster Yellowstone caldera
