I dislocated my brothers arm doing this years ago. He’s 26 and still has problems with his arm today. I’ll never get over it!! Thanks for these suggestions!

I also did that to my baby sister and dislocated her shoulder. 😢 I regret doing that to this day she was in so much pain crying nonstop and no one knew why until we took her to the hospital.
I was doing this pull up exercise as directed by an Occupational Therapist to help build arm and core strength because my baby did not like tummy time...sad to find out it's not true. I'll stop this immediately! Thank you!

I use one hand to cup her booty the other to cup her head then hold her up to me. She's prob only 7-8 lbs right now, so, it's easy to do it that way. I think she gets neck and head control exercises in when I'm laying down and letting her lay tummy down on me when I burp her. I do kind of let her sit up but in my arms. That way I can control her head movement. I put her on her side when everyone comes back from work, & I let her watch TV or to follow everyone's voices. My 8 month old still hasn't achieved full head control and I have been doing this pull up since yesterday apart from the exercise her therapist suggested. I saw the therapist do it and misunderstood that it was part of the exercise. Glad to have come across this video.
Love your videos! My baby has a large head, but thinner long body (>95% height) and she hated tummy time, even the different options so we really focused on #4 stabilizing her head while holding and we saw huge improvement in even just 1 week! ❤
I started doing this since my baby was 4 months old.she dislikes tummy time she prefers to lay on the back most of the time. Recent days Ive increased watching your videos and try to follow your advice. Thank you 😇
My paediatrician told me to do this with my son who had no upper arm strength. However the way she taught me to do it, is don’t just lift him yourself because that can damage the joints, go off of him, if he pulls upward slowly and gently start pulling toward you while still being able to support him. She specifically told me to follow his cues, and to not just pull him. I did this for about a month and now he has strong upper body strength! But this is good to know
I kept seeing recommendations for pulling to sit up but I did it once and it freaked me out how strained his arms were. Thank you for these alternatives!
Love these! My girl loves tummy time and I was looking for things to help her be able to sit up. She is so interested in food and I don't want to start her until she can hold her self up in a highchair. Thank you!!!
My baby has really good head control at 6 weeks. I can hold him upright without worrying much at all. I did a version of tummy time on a blanket or pillow across my knees and he could hold his head up really well because of the slight incline easing the difficulty. I have been holding him in sitting positions for weeks… I support his torso and spine in a straight line while he looks around and works on his neck control, or sit him back against my chest. He loves it. He hates being on his back too much after waking. He fusses or all out cries. I do flat, firm surface tummy time in short stints because he hates it. He has way better neck and head control than back and shoulder strength …so I am working on upping flat tummy time. I didn’t know letting my newborn sit up was damaging him. I feel bad now, because he enjoys it.
You are describing my son there as well 🤣 He is 6 weeks old and he loves to get carried around in an up-position. He loves to sit and cries if i put him on his back. I also have him on my knees and he is such a strong little bean. He also rolls around since week 2. He is pretty heavy though. The pediatritian checked him and was amazed by his strength I didnt even knew 😅
She's talking specifically on pull-to-sit. Sitting itself isn't bad when well supported for short periods. However, taking a childs hand or arm, and pulling them into a sit is dangerous. It can cause soft tissue damage or dislocation. Much like baby wearing can cause hip dysplasia if done improperly. Hope that helps clarify! :)
We've been followed by an OT for plagiocephaly and she helped us with general milestone builders. Pull to sit was one of the exercises she recommended. We started from the shoulders, worked our way to the elbows, and eventually the hands when he had strong enough anterior neck strength. I think it's how it's executed?
my son could lift his head by himself since he was 12 hours old 🙃 I never pulled him up myself but did offer my hands (seemed better than the tshirt he tried to grab) as he tried to pull himself up, but only let him when his head en neck were in a good place. otherwise I didn't let him do it. I let him grow like this on his own strenght for everything. now he just turned 8 months old and he's learning himself to walk, at the moment still with 1 hand holding onto something but he keeps trying to let go 🙈 he is really fast and strong, always has been

Hopefully you find the other four activities helpful. Baby's really enjoy our funny faces, smiles and kisses that parents typically do when doing a pull to sit - you can do these funny faces and kisses when they are lying on their back or in tummy time and they will love it just as much!
Hi Emma, I really like the bassinet that I see in this video. Which one is this one? I am currently looking for one. Could you please recommend? Thank you for the informative videos!
I did it only per therapist recommendations. My daughter had a bit of left torticolis and her muscles on her right side was kind of stiff so we did during therapy session and when I’m working alone with my daughter on her muscles it never as a play time exercise. She doesn’t have that stiffness anymore so I probably won’t be doing it anymore if therapist says so.
They did this to my daughter the full 9 days multiple times a day in the hospital 😂 and ive done it home to evaluate if she needs to go into a quite space
One of my girlfriends just told me that the baby's head shape can get deformed in the early months and there are ways to prevent that and keep the head in a somewhat rounded shape. Can you please post a video regarding which activities can help with that?
I'm doing it but only as an assistant, the baby does all the work, we started since month 1 working on the grap, then the arm pull (all the force comes from the baby, he pulls himself up, I don't apply any force) and now at 6 months old he is able to pull all the way up BY HIMSELF, he likes it and he asks for it when it's playtime
There’s nothing wrong with it though. Telling parents not to do it makes it sound like it harms your baby. My baby loves to take my hands and pull up. It makes him smile.
Actually it does harm your baby. It can cause rounded back in future when baby is sitting as well as ligament damage in her shoulders. If your baby grabs a knife and smiles it doesn't mean it's good for her...
During a pull-to-sit the normal response is the baby will right their head and maintain it in line with their shoulders. Baby's initially have very limited neck control and their head is very heavy in comparison to the rest of their body. Until they have sufficient neck control their head falls backwards. When you pull your baby into sitting there is a risk your baby will sustain a neck injury. When doing a pull to sit in an assessment we do the movement very slowly and actually stop the movement as soon as the baby's head falls behind their shoulders to ensure they do not sustain a neck injury. The movement is done slowly to ensure the baby has time to react and turn on their neck muscles. I agree babies do appear to like it when this is done, but from my experience it is the funny faces, kisses and reactions from the adult doing the movement that they are enjoying and not the movement itself.
@@ekaterinakonstantinova814 yeah, you wouldn’t want to whiplash your baby. In the case of mine, he’s 6 months old, and I don’t pull him. He grabs my hands and pulls himself up.
@@EmmaHubbard can you please clarify, are you saying this is NEVER a good thing to do, or at what point is it ok? My kiddo is 2 with Cerebral Palsy. He is not sitting unassisted but has great head control. He loves to do this and I'm curious what your opinion is. (Like is this ok when they have good head control.) Edit: I know the video specifically says newborn, I'm just trying to find exercises to help him work on sitting.
What if you put your fingers in your baby’s hands and she uses her arms/abs to pull herself to sitting? My girl seems to love doing that, she also pushes herself to a standing position after she’s sat up!
@@Black_Samurai-fish thank you, my little boy, 3 months now and crazy head control, pulls himself up into a sitting position. Grins madly when he achieves to bite our finger when he's finally sitting :)
She said that if it's done quickly, it can give your baby a neck injury. When pediatricians do it, it is slowly, and the moment the head molls back, they stop the movement. So there isn't any lollygagging of the baby's head, or any whiplash incurred.
My daughter is 5 months now and has great head control and very strong. I do a version of this, I don't pull her arms, I hold her hands/forearms and I let her pull herself up. Is doing it like that okay?
What if when holding their hands they pull themselves to sitting without us pulling them up? My son is 5 months and pulls himself up to sitting. I will start with the rolling to side for sitting
So, we don’t do it to exercise our baby (he’s a little over 5 months now), but because he seems to like it. He particularly wants to stand, so we let him pull himself up, and then get his feet underneath him to stand. We help him, but we don’t really pull him. Again, we don’t see this as exercise, but something he just seems to enjoy doing. We do loads of tummy time, and he’s starting to enjoy that as well. We also place him in a sitting position to play with toys or look at a book (which is really just another toy to him at this point). So as long as we’re giving him “proper” exercise, is it detrimental to be doing the pull-to-sit activity? Should we stop doing this?
Hi @Emma hubbard my baby is 4 months old when i give her fingers she try to pull it and try sit up right and sometimes i am making her sit Is that ok? Is it have any risk in future?
Curious why pull to sit, which you mentioned is used to assess head control shouldn't be used as an exercise. If its being used to assess it, doesn't it mean its engaging the same muscles required for head control?
The only time I ever saw pull to Sit used was literally when I took my daughter to physical therapy and the doctor did it and it scared me but she did hold her head up. They never said not to try it at home but I’m glad I used my gut and didn’t
The wonders weeks recommend doing an easy variation of this at a 90° angle on your legs at 6 weeks. I tried it, and went "No way!" Just think if someone did this to you as and adult. What muscles engaged to maintain proper form
I never did this as an exercise with my kids I just followed them trying to pull up whenever they grabbed my hands and because it made them giggle like crazy
Would this also be true to avoid if my baby has super stiff hips? Our OT helping with tongue tie issues recommended doing this every time we pick him up to help loosen up his legs/hips so he doesn’t keep straightening them so tightly.
There's a channel called "pathways." They show the development of 2 month old babies called typical and atypical, being pulled into the sitting position. The babies didn't seem to like it.
I have a question though, my daughter is almost 5 months and she pulls herself up using our fingers or the baby gym, but we never actually pull on her, its her own strength always, is it safe if done like this?
But isn’t it okay when you just hold their hands and they pull themselves up and you just assist him slowly, holding his hands while he pulls himself up? My 3 month old son does that. Just wondering, is all ☺️
Hi @Ivy Dini-ay and @Priyanka Kannan if you are going to do a pull to sit with your baby then doing it slowly is better as it gives them time to switch on their core and neck muscles. Just check to make sure your little ones head is not falling backwards. I find babies tend to love the funny faces /kisses and giggles parents make when doing a pull to sit and not necessarily the movement itself.
Hi emma. My baby is 2.5mos old. Should i be worried that he still cant carry his head? He was in and out of the hosp recently so we couldnt do tummy time for him.
My baby is 3 moths old. He is already trying to sit by himself as I am holding him on my stomach lying. He has already a good head control, he's flipping on his sides, can reach some toys, he's doing "a humster grab" (he puts everything in his mouth with bouth hands) etc. He didn't reach his feet though. Should we avoid that sitting with support position if he is trying hard to put him into it? And when to start otherwise? When we should let our babies to sit with our support? 🤔
😡 most recent nurse review, she said my 12 week old needed to practice this lift which no one had told us to do before and I felt like it’s not good for her arm joints.
My baby is 4 months but can't raise his head even a single degree when placed on tummy time. Is it okay or something to worry about? He was born premature though at 7 months

My baby too. She loves to pull herself up when I hold her hands. She stands up immediately after too.
She's 4.5 months.
It’s fine. All babies are different and there’s a big difference between pulling a babies arms and baby using it’s muscles.
@@Black_Samurai-fish Thank YOUUU
@@Black_Samurai-fish thank you, my little boy, 3 months now and crazy head control, pulls himself up into a sitting position. Grins madly when he achieves to bite our finger when he's finally sitting :)
I was wondering the same
So glad i basically been doing everything but also been doing the pull to sit she is almost 5 months old but wil not do it again
Good tips! Thank you for sharing. Curious as to your rationale for not doing that pull to sit.
She said that if it's done quickly, it can give your baby a neck injury.
When pediatricians do it, it is slowly, and the moment the head molls back, they stop the movement.
So there isn't any lollygagging of the baby's head, or any whiplash incurred.
Ooooops was doing the pull to sit ! Will stop it immediately !
thank you for this info. can we start doing from 1month baby ?
Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome!
My daughter is 5 months now and has great head control and very strong. I do a version of this, I don't pull her arms, I hold her hands/forearms and I let her pull herself up. Is doing it like that okay?
Hi Emma, if possible please suggest the times in weeks or months to make changes in an activity.
Thank you so much! I really needed this
You're so welcome!
What if when holding their hands they pull themselves to sitting without us pulling them up? My son is 5 months and pulls himself up to sitting. I will start with the rolling to side for sitting
My baby’s PT told me to do this to help her abdominal muscles.
Hi @Emma hubbard my baby is 4 months old when i give her fingers she try to pull it and try sit up right and sometimes i am making her sit
Is that ok? Is it have any risk in future?
Curious why pull to sit, which you mentioned is used to assess head control shouldn't be used as an exercise. If its being used to assess it, doesn't it mean its engaging the same muscles required for head control?
The only time I ever saw pull to Sit used was literally when I took my daughter to physical therapy and the doctor did it and it scared me but she did hold her head up. They never said not to try it at home but I’m glad I used my gut and didn’t
My 1 month old baby he can stand when I’m holding him other can stand straight his legs. Your video is very helpful.
Glad it helped!
Please don't make he to stand much cos he's still a baby
I started pulling my baby just today, i did it 3-4 times and suddenly this video appeared in suggestions, thank you ♥️
You’re welcome 😊
Important tips, Emma. Really appreciate it!
Glad it was helpful!
My osteo told me to do this just yesterday after assessing my son!
The wonders weeks recommend doing an easy variation of this at a 90° angle on your legs at 6 weeks. I tried it, and went "No way!"
Just think if someone did this to you as and adult. What muscles engaged to maintain proper form
I never did this as an exercise with my kids I just followed them trying to pull up whenever they grabbed my hands and because it made them giggle like crazy
Awww. I just did it because they thought it was fun
Haha haha
Can you please explain the reasons to not do pull to sit? Why not? How does it negatively impacts baby?
Thankyou doctor
How long 2 months old baby should stay on their back? Can I put down on floor for her to play when she wake up or should I be holding her ??
I have a baby exercise app, and they actually recommend doing it........ cant believe it
Our maternal health nurse said to do this as much as possible
Thanks for sharing this video it’s very helpful to me ..
See this is scary bc there’s always someone contradicting something everyone says 🤦🏾♀️
Would this also be true to avoid if my baby has super stiff hips? Our OT helping with tongue tie issues recommended doing this every time we pick him up to help loosen up his legs/hips so he doesn’t keep straightening them so tightly.
Thanks, this means a lot to me. thans so much
Thanks for the tips 😊
Thanks sis i really appreciate it so much dear
There's a channel called "pathways." They show the development of 2 month old babies called typical and atypical, being pulled into the sitting position. The babies didn't seem to like it.
Emma, I love your videos. You’re fantastic. I always recommend your videos to new mamas.
Thank you so much!
Just wondering, is all ☺️
Same! My son is 4 months old now and he just holds my hand firmly and pulls himself up , is it okay then?
Can’t you just have do planks with them to strengthen their core?
Simply say.. Thank you. ❤
Thanks.
I have been doing this for ages omg. Omg omg. My baby is almost one!!! Why did i find this vid nowww
My son is 8 months old and I just learned the pull to sit isn’t good 😢 he can sit unassisted, but still cannot get into a sitting position from laying down. I’m so afraid we’ll need PT because I’ve been doing an exercise I learned in an app 😢
What a cute little baby!
