    Hi from Scotland. I’ve just binge watched your episodes and really enjoyed them. I’m knitting a Friday slip over by petit knits at the moment. I knit, paper piece quilt and cross stitch as the mood takes me . I bought the hedge which shawl pattern but never made it so really want to now. . Thanks for making your videos 🎉

      Hello over there! Thanks so much for watching and intruding yourself. My sister went on a hiking trip in Scotland this past summer, and brought me back a gorgeous hat pattern book by Kate Davies. The landscape photos in it are stunning - taken in the Millarochy (?) area. I hope to visit one day.

    Congratulations on the new baby! Enjoy him while you can because they grow up way too quickly. Thanks for mentioning the sock book! I've been wanting it for a long time but it was too expensive. I just went on Amazon and ordered it because it is only $12.99 US!!! I was afraid that it was used or from some strange seller but its brand new, softcover from Laine so I'm super excited about it. There are so many patterns in that book that I want to knit so now i can! Happy knitting Mercedes!

      Thank you, Heather 😊
      I’m glad you could also get the sock book! Have fun knitting from it. I can’t wait to cast on something.

    About the sweater that you think is too large: could you put it on a cable and try it on? And if it’s way too big, I think I’d even cut it back to just above the patterned bottom, pick back a row or two- and reknit the top on smaller needles. (Even if you have to buy more yarn?) I sure enjoy your knit talks! ❤

    It was so good to see another episode from you! My opinion on the Marie Wallin sweater - rip it back and try with a smaller needle or figure how to decrease it a bit so it's less wide. I'm struggling with the Birkin sweater right. I ended up completely ripping it out and am going to have to heavily modify the pattern to make it work.
    I kept persevering with my two prior sweaters, going against my gut instinct, and neither of those sweaters are wearable now! So I will be ripping out two whole sweaters. It's talk me to stop and rip back/modify when I first start to question the process.

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m totally with you on trying to listen to the gut feeling when working on a sweater. Better to rip back when you first notice that feeling than get to the end and find you were right all along! Knitting is a process.
      I usually don’t mind ripping back at all. This one is different somehow - I think just because the mohair aspect is delicate. And something else… I don’t know, I have a feeling it’s salvageable, I guess. It’s also exactly the measurements of what my recommended size is in the pattern- problem is that’s way to much ease. So odd.
      I do have a plan though. It involves proceeding with the sleeve and then modifying the top. I’ll be sure to give an update in the next episode (if I get to work on it).
      Thanks so much for your input!

    As a sewist first and a newer knitter I have a suggestion for your oversized sweater. You could think of what you have already knit as a fabric. You could steek it and sew the pieces into exactly what you want. If you don’t sew you may have a brave friend who would love the challenge. As a new mother you are short on time. If it’s between wearing it or not you could take some time to think about this.

    • @songbirdsadeknits

      Thanks for the idea, Beverley. This would certainly be faster than ripping back. I’m going to leave the project aside for now and think on it.

    Congratulations on your baby. You ranunculus looks great on you and you picked the perfect yarn. Although there's a lot of positive ease, the lightweight fabric works very well.

    The Marie Wallin is lovely...are you committed to a sweater? I'm wondering if you could finagle some shaping and turn it into a caplet. When you head it up to your shoulders it looked like a beautiful deep cowl. Enjoying the episodes here. Stay Cozy! Fond Wishes, Sarah

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for watching and offering your thoughts. I like your caplet idea- it certainly would allow me to save most of what I’ve already knit.
      Best wishes to you, too, and I’ll catch you over on your lovely channel! 🍂

    Enjoyed finding your podcast. Just a thought on the Marie Wallin sweater is maybe steek it and make a cardi out of it. Removing an appropriate amount?? 🤷‍♀️. Best wishes with you babe😊.

      Welcome, Linda. Thanks so much for your comment and suggestion for my Muckle Roe. A cardigan is a great idea, since I have a lot of fabric to work with.

    Can you share your dyeing process. Thanks! So glad your are back.

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Laura. I share a little about my dye process with black walnuts in episode 5. That’s when I dyed the very same yarn I used to make the socks shown in this episode.
      Basically, black walnuts don’t need a mordant (because their tannins act as a dye-fastener). So all I did was make a dye bath with a lot of black walnuts. Probably more than I needed. I boiled them for a few hours and then strained the liquid. I soaked my yarn and water first and then put the yarn into the cold dye bath and slowly brought it up to a very low simmer and let it cook for about an hour and then let it sit. Some yarn I took out right away, some I let sit overnight. I got different shades as a result.

    I've heard if you put your mohair sweater in the freezer for a bit, that helps with ripping back the stitches. Hope that helps. It's beautiful colorwork.

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah yes! I’ve heard that too but had forgotten. I love this design, so I think I will rip back to the colour work and do a bunch of decreases to get a smaller size. So much work … but it’ll be pretty in the end. Thanks for the tip!!!

      @@songbirdsadeknits yes it did. I knew from the start that it would not fit, no matter what i never got gauge, so I finished it knowing that i would need surgery, turned out perfect .It was an Alice Starmore, Margaret Tudor made out of panels.

    Congratulations on your new baby! Your ranunculus is beautiful, and the color is stunning! Thanks for the tip about the book about socks, I had no idea either about the price (I went to amazon smile and got it immediately). The pullover is gorgeous, I would cry if it wouldn't fit, and I have no idea what to do. The Day of Reconciliation is an excellent way to honor the departed and make amends with the present. Good to see you!

  • @lyndahackenberg2061
    @lyndahackenberg2061 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think adding mohair to the fingering yarn gave you a DK weight and caused your gauge to be bigger. Yhe sweater looks beautiful.

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes… I think you are correct. I guess that didn’t occur to me when I began. Strange thing is the actual measurements are exactly right for ‘my’ size according to the pattern, but the amount of positive ease intended by the pattern is clearly far too much.

  • @Sharon-ce7gl
    @Sharon-ce7gl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Mercedes, why don't you pick up stitches beginning from the shoulder and knit the arms top down? So you won't get disturbed by those seams. Could be the solution if you like those boxy sweaters.

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Sharon! Yes you make a great point. Actually, the weekender sleeves are worked that way, and they really aren’t that bad. I’ll keep in mind working all dropped shoulder sleeves top down for future, for sure.

  • @bernicejames8014
    @bernicejames8014 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A lot of times after the colour work you decrease stitches so the stocking stitch isn’t so big. Maybe rip back to the colour work and decrease stitches. I’m working on a vest and the pattern I’m working on called to do that

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely an option! This pattern calls for a change in needle size after colour work, so that the bottom and body end up the same width. But… ya it’s still too big as is.

  • @edinacole6382
    @edinacole6382 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Take a break from the Marie Wallin sweater. Then rip out the stockinette stitches and re-knit with smaller needles. No one ever says, "I regret ripping back and fixing"

    • @songbirdsadeknits
      @songbirdsadeknits  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree with you. I usually don’t mind or hesitate at all to rip back. I don’t want to knit things I won’t wear. However, to go down a needle size means I’ll be knitting on 2mm! But, if that ends up being what I have to do to make this thing wearable, then I’ll do it.

    Por favor, como puedo aprender a hacer el punto del Ranúnclos?

      I’m not sure I understand your question fully, but I think you are asking how you can learn to knit the ranunculus? I’d suggest watching all the helpful technique videos linked in the pattern!
