- We got inspired to make this after watching another TH-camrs channel from the beginning. This is a walk through of our TH-cam journey, how we hit 100K subscribers, and the non numbers based milestones we had along the way.
We hope that seeing the process from the beginning helps anyone who might be wanting to start a TH-cam channel in 2021 but is a little nervous about hitting the record button.

Yeah the “PM” phenomenon helps but your quality does show thru. Peter did get me here but I stayed with you cuz it’s a pleasure to watch your vids.

I found you guys from Peter’s video and you both managed to take that opportunity and really capitalize off of it well because it not only seemed like a similar space as Peter, but it gave us all an opportunity to know both of you and your personalities. I think so many of us love your personalities and are here for YOU not because of Peter, and that’s pretty damn cool.

I have been uploading for 7 years on YT. My channel has gone through 3 phases and that transition has been hard for growth. But the most recent phase has been by for the most ME. That feeling makes just clicking upload worth it and so exciting. If I found my channel I would be so stoked and that feeling is carrying me through uploading. I carry the advice you guys gave me a few years ago "if you need a year's worth of work, go work for a year" with me every day. Since you told me that, I built a sustainable business editing videos for TH-camrs and get to just do that full time. Im basically a full time youtuber LOL :).

I know you said that you thought grading was the be all and end all in the early days, but it really was what struck me first. When I found you guys I was like "How is this channel so flipping beautiful" and it just pulled me right in

I’ve just recently started to treat my TH-cam account as a channel. Wasn’t entirely sure what it would be about. That is, not until I turned 40. It’s clearer now!! Thanks for the encouragement and constant inspiration!

I didn't find your channel until the Peter McKinnon episode. Have been a fan since that day. I went back and watched all the prior videos and caught up to your current. You've been a huge inspiration! My channel is coming up on 5 years old and I only have about 5000 subscribers but the video making process is sheer joy for me and it doesn't matter how many subs I have. Thank you for letting us come along on your journey.

I needed this right now. Thank you. Been at this for 3-4 years, over 200 videos, and "only" 30k subs. I've been seriously burned out lately and slowed way down. Heck last week I posted an action camera shot video and I hate it. My biggest issue is my subs keep climbing but my views don't. I need to buckle back down and keep at it. Thank you.

I think Cold Island was where I discovered the channel, I actually only stumbled upon that video with Peter fairly recently and didn’t realise it was an older one as I was watching it. The helicopter stuff is a cool niche but it’s your personalities that keep me coming back; keep up the good work guys!

I gained so much respect for you when you previously mentioned not being able to monetize for certain reasons and you kept working hard at making awesome videos because you’re passionate about it. I fell in love with your channel because of the cold island series, because it reminded me of Departures and I've been looking for that fix for years. Departures also inspired me to embark on the photography career path. It's worth noting that what originally pulled me in was Chris' ability to explain camera functions. As someone who taught themselves Chris explained things in a way that I couldn't find anywhere else, it clicked with me better than anywhere else. I've been a dedicated follower ever since!
Thanks for never forgetting the humour. I found your channel through the “real estate phohography” video bc I needed to brush up my editing of a luxurious villa shoot. Real estate and graphic design was my thing when I started my business in 2009.

I don't remember precisely when I started following your channel, but it was around 2018, before millennium falcon. However, I do remember very clearly that after watching a few videos I was amazed with the channel quality and, at the same, I could not believe that you had "so few" subscribers. Fan fact, I discover Matti Haapoja's, Peter Mckinnon's, Cris Hau's and Lizzie Pierce's channels because of you!

I found you guys in the most random way in late 2019. I stumbled upon a video of a not so famous youtuber mentioning the Cold Island series. There was not even a link to your channel. I specifically remember typing your names into the search bar - but not what that original video was about or even what her name was 😅

This is such a cool case study on what works on TH-cam to grow an audience! Also I love departures and I’m inspired to make travel videos as well! That’s why I started my channel!

Great video. We just hit 1k 4 months ago. The first 2 years I watched the numbers (depressing haha) Then when I stopped watching them we went from 200 to 1000 in less than a year. Every day you learn how to grow and things change. I do go back and watch our old videos (this was why I started the channel to preserve our trips and memories too) I think how can I make this better too as I watch old videos. We have worked hard for every subscriber it wasn't just done overnight. Now the people who watch and comment are what keeps you going. I knew nothing about videos so that was a learning curve. I learn more every day but I do have a full-time job so this hinders me. I found your channel from Peter Mackinnon and so glad I did.
Love the idea of the manifesto!! I started our channel to document our travels but then COVID happened so we pivoted to sharing about our minimalism journey as a family living in a small space and I love it!! Hope to still include some travel elements!

I really like how you presented this as a technical skill journey much more than anything else! When I first started following your channel I went back and watched pretty much all of your videos and it was pretty amazing to watch your level of skill and storytelling improve so much! The only ones I couldn’t watch were the videos filmed on the GoPro. Nothing to do with not being cinematic, they just gave me serious motion sickness bc GoPro Hero 5 without Hypersmooth 😂
I’m almost 3 years in, 2.5K subs, 42 videos! I’d be so much further ahead if the pandemic hadn’t sabotaged me big time! It was about to blow up, but then I had this big gap in uploads and everything slowed down. Couldn’t record outdoors because I’m risk group and couldn’t record indoors because we had daily drilling and hammering for more than a year - construction industry boom. Ugh! But hey, things are about to pick up, we’re moving to a new place, quiet and less populated, so it’ll turn around now! I’m thinking 10K next year might actually be realistic if I manage to upload more again?

I think Peter's shoutout did get you some attention, but at the end of the day, it was your style that actually attracted me. I've always enjoyed your videos, they are aesthetically pleasing, you guys are so funny and real in your videos, and I learned so much from your tutorials, especially, as a photographer, I learned so much about home renovation from you!!! Crazy to hear this story....I knew it was this way. 2.5 years in and not hitting 1,000 subs yet, but that's ok. I love the journey and the people in the community are just amazing. My wife is always asking me which TH-cam boyfriend is texting you now? LOL Slow and steady wins the race. Plus I still have a number of things to learn and I am cool with that. I LOVED this! So fun to learn about your journey. I love watching older videos of my favourite youtubers for the exact reason you mentioned. I have a lot of respect for the grind you guys did before and after the PM collab. The fact that you grew as much as you did from that collab means you were doing the right thing and it was just a matter of time to get more eyeballs on it. Sooooooo well deserved!! Also I'm so happy you stuck with it and didn't quit after those 2 years! Crazy how our lives can change, right?!

I started watching your channel when you still about 3k subs. I had my channel up to 20k subs, previously i'm making vids about running but since i'm not running anymore i'm just trying to find a new niche for my channel. I recently start making content again about travelling but with covid , travel is limited. for now i'm just learning using the new editing tools like premiere pro and after effects. I found your channel looking for either color grading stuff or something related to cinematic vlogging or something like that, but I was immediately hooked to you guys.
First cause I was happy to see you are a couple making videos (just like my wife and I), second, you can tell you guys have values, not just great value content, but you know, not the typical youtubers doing anything just to get views.
I also find the quality of your videos outstanding, love the color grading and I feel inspired by what you do to also do it on my channel.
