just to clarify, "dinner" was, at the time, the word they used for "lunch" and they commonly would eat later in the afternoon then we do now. So, what we consider "dinner" today, they called "supper"
Actually dinner was, and still is, defined as the main meal of the day. It is just a cultural shift that that meal is now supper (the evening meal) and was the midday meal then. Not just a synonym for lunch. I would guess the cost of lighting to illuminate a large evening meal was part of the reason the midday meal was the main one. Eating a smaller meal wouldn't require the ceremony and associated lighting in the dark.

fun fact: dolly actually ordered a fifteen year old black slave to save it and then she frickin bolted. a Frenchmen tried to help but then other servants, that were saving stuff bc dolly just grabbed silverware and ditched, ran in to the burning White House and told the Frenchmen and 15 year old Paul Jennings that the British were like ten miles out. so then, the French servant just left along w other slaves while Jennings had decided to break the frame to save the canvas. Fun facts about James Madison! 1) He was the shortest president to date, standing at 5’4! 2) James would tell the same jokes all the time, the the point that people would be far more interested in the different ways he’d tell them. 3) Speaking of his jokes, he had a pretty dirty sense of humour. 4) He really liked ice cream!
1. James' wife would also make jokes about his height (in a good way) and often give him piggy back rides. 2. He squealed when he was served cream puffs at dinner. Thats adorable.

Except it also sort of isn't, because it'll most likely be more than that, that is just taking into account inflation of currency without taking into account the changing of market prices too. For example exotic foods have become cheaper due to mass transport (cargo ships, planes, trucks) but accommodation has become more expensive due to more people. It's always hard to determine the true value of old money but if $500 was enough to buy a small house it would be worth $200,000 or if it was only enough to rent for a year it may be worth $20,000.
I couldn’t find any inflation calculator that went back to 1812, but $2000 (the total of both ears and the head) in 1913 equates to $50,585.10 today. $25,292.55 for the head and 12,646.28 for each ear.

BRING THIS BACK! Why do you guys do this with the best series?? Every video in the first season has MILLIONS of views, so please bring it back. I genuinely love this series. P.S. WHEN you do bring it back, make sure Shane is still the host. Love that guy. ;)
Shane and Ryan have their own channel called watcher now, and they have a series called puppet history. :) It's similar, and it's quite fun.

Dolly Madison saved much more than just one photo of George Washington, including the Declaration of Independence (yes, she did that not Monroe). And she threw the dinner party knowing that the British were closing in so as to show her resolve and help make those still in Washington feel a bit more safe. She deserves more credit than she gets
Chloe Davis yeah but she's a woman in America so... haha this country is fucked
A woman anywhere. British women weren't exactly getting recognition at the time so I guess they're fucked too?
Shane and Ryan need their own channel of their shenanigans!
Ruining history and Unsolved are my 2 most favorite series on youtube.
They do now! It’s called Watcher and boy oh boy do they post their shenanigans. Their Puppet History series is kind of like a reboot of Ruining History 😁😁

This comment is kinda old but on Shane’s new series “Puppet History” he just did a video on it !
It was Thomas Jefferson who started the tradition of calling the President “ Mr. President”
fun fact: dolly actually ordered a fifteen year old black slave to save it and then she frickin bolted. a Frenchmen tried to help but then other servants, that were saving stuff bc dolly just grabbed silverware and ditched, ran in to the burning White House and told the Frenchmen and 15 year old Paul Jennings that the British were like ten miles out.
so then, the French servant just left along w other slaves while Jennings had decided to break the frame to save the canvas.
Dolly saved herself w these “letters” and the Madison family had a painting made to portray dolly all elegant and fancy and on the left side there’s Jennings but he looks like a middle aged man instead of the 15 yr old he was

Fun facts about James Madison!
1) He was the shortest president to date, standing at 5’4!
2) James would tell the same jokes all the time, the the point that people would be far more interested in the different ways he’d tell them.
3) Speaking of his jokes, he had a pretty dirty sense of humour.
4) He really liked ice cream!
andretheinternaut omg im taller than jimmy madmanson, who knew?
and he was a HUGE hypochondriac
1. James' wife would also make jokes about his height (in a good way) and often give him piggy back rides.
2. He squealed when he was served cream puffs at dinner. Thats adorable.

You learn about the war of 1812 in Canada in grade 7.
I'm in grade 7.
You just couldn't post this few weeks ago when my class was working on it.
redrose 101 I'm in grade 7 too! In Canada. And we haven't learnt about it yet
lol I’m in grade 10 and we are just now learning this. we mostly learned about local history in grades 7-9 (junior high)
i remember they taught us that canadians burned down the pink house and its a monumental time in canadian history. we are the reason why they turned the white house from pink-white LOL ur welcome americans

You should talk about the Three Hundred and Thirty Five Years' War, which was an alleged theoretical state of war between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly. Read about it, it's hilarious.
Aiden Rose Grey yes that one:)
Bahahaha that is hilarious
JustSarah the Isles of Scilly are part of Britain, it was a result of the English Civil war. The Royal Navy were on the Parliamentarians side therefore Charles’ attempts to gain support from European countries failed. The Dutch engaged the Royal
Navy off the Isles of Scilly and lost a treaty was signed in 1985z

BRUHH.... HAMILTON IS ROLLING ON HIS GRAVE LAUGHING AT JAMES MADISON 😂😂😂
I find it hilarious that this showed up in my recommendations today.
I love how each episode has Sarah in it, like obviously there's the stars Ryan and Shane, but I find it cute that Shane is just like "yeah I don't really care who else is in it other than my girl has to be in every episode" 😍
Also, Shane and Ryan are the backbone of not only buzzfeed blue but just Buzzfeed in general 💗

Albert Gallatin was the US Treasurer: politician, diplomat, ethnologist and linguist. He was born in Geneva and spoke French as his first language.
@@KevinHandydfw Hamilton was the treasury secretary
@@lilhinata_02 You are 100% correct EXCEPT during the James Madison administration the Treasury Secretary was Gallatin. Hamilton served from September 11, 1789 - January 31, 1795. Gallatin served Jefferson and Madison from May 14, 1801 - February 8, 1814*. Hamilton was our very first and that's a fact. But he was the first. Not the present at the time of the burning nor the intervening Treasury Secretaries either.
Why does Ryan look so done in the picture at 22:44 ? 😂😂 It's like Ruining History is the opposite of Unsolved - Shane getting really deep into research and observations and Ryan just regretting the life decisions which lead him to the point.
i wish they continued this series it was so entertaining
Ryan and Shane are not at Buzzfeed anymore. They have their own channel called Watcher. Shane actually has his own series on that chanal about history and he kind of makes it like this, but as almost like a gameshow and he took like a whole week to make puppets for the show.

I finally found this comment
$500 in the year 1812 is equivalent in purchasing power to $8,865.95 in 2018
holy fucking GOD
