After he died, she took his place as Pirate Lord, a role she took very seriously. She was a strict leader and placed laws for the pirates under her command, such as the crime of raping women being punishable by death. Ching Shih commanded over 800,000 sailors and 400 junks - a fleet bigger than most countries' navies. When the Chinese government realized that it was near impossible to defeat her, they offered her (and I believe her crew as well) full amnesty, which she agreed to, and she got to keep her loot. In retirement, she opened up a brothel and gambling house.

But the thing is, this incident made Ching Shih realize that she can't be a pirate lord forever - sooner or later, she'll either be killed or captured, likely by the hands of the navy. So she planned one last fatal raid and basically coerced the navies to her conditions, and the Chinese imperial govt begged her to just stop raiding and pirating. They say she was hot tempered and ran wild but think of the time period. If a woman spoke before being spoken to she was considered out of line. If a woman had any other goal in life than becoming a mother she was judged. She was probably just a modern woman ahead of her time, and didn’t want to be oppressed or have her life dictated by a man. It’s also of value to take into account that all these anecdotes were from that era, so obviously she would be made out to sound crazy.
FLIPPIN WEEABOO yeet well I’m not justifying that, I think it’s just important to take into account how women were seen back then and that most of these anecdotes come from men of that time period. I'm picturing a full on anime plot right now with Anne's child who was left in Cuba, growing up to be a social, unruly and twisted child and finding out that his mother is a Queen of the sea and then he becomes a pirate to take his mother's seat... or something like that.. This is funny because many of history's greatest pirates were women. My two personal favorites: Cheng I Sao (Ching Shih), a Chinese pirate who controlled trade in Canton for a while, got super rich, backed the government into a corner, escaped all her pirating with no consequence and lived a full, happy life and Jeanne de Clisson (Lioness of Brittany), who revenge-killed a bunch of people for the unfair murder of her husband and terrorized the Normandy area, she also (I think) lived out her life happily.

I can't believe they left out her signature move. When she killed someone, she would expose her breast (or she fought with one breast exposed) so the dying man knew he was just slain by a woman.
My favorite pirate was Jeanne de Clisson. She was a Frenchwoman in the 1300’s who sought revenge for her husband’s beheading. She had three ships, each painted black with red sails. Jeanne was infamous for leaving only one survivor alive after plundering a ship and telling him to take this message back “tell the king I am coming to kill him.” Also, about the whole dressing the girl as a boy thing, boys were easier to explain. Young boys were commonly apprenticed, so having a young boy hang around you, especially if it was a family member’s, wasn’t that uncommon in those circles.
Christine C. Part of what makes them so amazing is that women were literally not allowed to be pirates. So it makes their stories even more exciting, since they faced danger on both sides.
I love this series. Buzzfeed's longer series are actually really well-produced. I prefer this, "Unsolved," and "Try Guys" to "I tried these Instagram famous foods for 24 hours"
Joyce and Selorm are so delightful! Their energy fits perfectly with the chaotic energy of Shane and Ryan. Along with Sara’s sweetness - this is the perfect episode
This is my favorite series on Buzzfeed! I love how Shane narrates the story with a mix of seriousness and mischievousness. It really works and sets the tone of the video. I wish there'd be a more regular schedule of episodes but I also appreciate the quality of these few ones, far apart as they may be.
Nathan Bruce But she wasn't an exception to that though, the girl had ten kids, did not die at child birth, and lived quite a long life even by today's standards.

LITERALLY ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT THIS EPISODE 😂 I’ve been looking for a comment to see if anyone else thought he looked like a watered down Boy George 😂
Saying that the daughter is a relative's son would be because, in the 18th century, there would be a much greater likelihood of apprenticing a boy to learn a skill, than a girl; training a girl as a female clerk would have been almost unheard of at the time, and would have raised neighbors' suspicions. A bit more common would be a woman who helped her husband in his work, learned it well, and, as a widow, took over her husband's work after his death. Training girls beyond the "feminine arts" (sewing, knitting/crocheting, regular and fine needle work, etc.) was highly unusual in this time period.
Good point. Plus, the local people would know the maid had a baby daughter...if the child actually was a boy then it couldn't be the bastard child of Cormac and Brennan.
They probably dressed her as a boy because it was more common for boys to leave home to apprentice, whereas there was no point for girls to do that. That way it just looked like William, his maid, and his nephew. The only explanation he would have for having a niece come to live with him was if she was orphaned.
19:53 was literally me for all four seasons of “Black Sails” and their portrayal of Anne. And yes, I remain devastated no one ever uttered “squally squoop” on that show.
Different pirate crews had their own flags. Jack, Anne and Mary's flag is the one we now call the Jolly Roger, probably the only pirate flag most people know today. Also don't feel bad for John - the reason Jack tried to buy her a divorce was because John had her publicly whipped. The two escaped together after the refusal. Jack had actually been fully pardoned before this but threw that away to steal a ship and run off with Anne. Mary was with them at the time they left Cuba, so Jack, Anne, and Mary were the whole crew of the William until they recruited more pirates.

he looks really good with it tho
"Hell yeah. Smoking's bad."
Selorm and Joyce are so sweet while Sara and Ryan are being relentless trolls. I love it.
Like there’s teams or something 😂
My favorite pirate was Jeanne de Clisson. She was a Frenchwoman in the 1300’s who sought revenge for her husband’s beheading. She had three ships, each painted black with red sails. Jeanne was infamous for leaving only one survivor alive after plundering a ship and telling him to take this message back “tell the king I am coming to kill him.”
Also, about the whole dressing the girl as a boy thing, boys were easier to explain. Young boys were commonly apprenticed, so having a young boy hang around you, especially if it was a family member’s, wasn’t that uncommon in those circles.
Anne Bonny and Ching Shih are the most AMAZING pirates ever and they are both badass ladies
I agree! And Ching never was punished.
don't forget mary read!
Mrs Ching is essentially civilian admiral. 1st woman civillian sea admiral. Altough in ancient china..that was a big BIG NONO!
There were far more amazing pirates than them. Can we stop kissing women's asses just because they're women?
Christine C. Part of what makes them so amazing is that women were literally not allowed to be pirates. So it makes their stories even more exciting, since they faced danger on both sides.
I love this series. Buzzfeed's longer series are actually really well-produced. I prefer this, "Unsolved," and "Try Guys" to "I tried these Instagram famous foods for 24 hours"
Ummm Shane looks more like George Michael than he does a pirate
MsLovelifetothefulle THANK GOD I WASNT THE ONLY ONE
MsLovelifetothefulle He really does. But also I can vouch that he has a giant head.
Girl I was finna say that lmao
Definitely looks like a lesbian mom from the 90s.
this is true of any situation
I have rewatched each of these like 20 times... I am desperate Shane... hook us up with some more ruining history
Bella B your prayer has been answered in the form of puppet history
The 5 of them should always do Ruining History together! I love this series, I just wished they were made more regularly!
"yarrr mommy" 😂😂😂😂
Ok but in all seriousness can Joyce and Selorm stay please??? Their commentary is 100/10 and they add such a fun spice to the episodes!! Love them!!
Joyce and Selorm are so delightful! Their energy fits perfectly with the chaotic energy of Shane and Ryan. Along with Sara’s sweetness - this is the perfect episode
IF HE DOESN'T WEAR THE EARRING IN THE NEXT EPISODE OF UNSOLVED I'LL SUE
Mon Bon For how much?
Mon Bon probably recorded before this last season started lulz
Mon Bon same
update: he did not wear it, i'm very disappointed.
*yes sir i am a boy as hell*
She was already dressing as a guy for a while. It didn't bother her when she was a pirate.
Cmere ill make ya pregs
Ftms when they finish transitioning
*this group needs to be permanent to this series PLEASE ESPECIALLY JOYCE AND SARA*
Yes please !!
YES!
15:27
Did anyone notice that the barrel says "Red Rum", as in "Murder" spelled backward?
i didn't but that's amazing
Shining tingz
HERE'S JOHNNY
Shane with an earring was the highlight of my day
This is my favorite series on Buzzfeed! I love how Shane narrates the story with a mix of seriousness and mischievousness. It really works and sets the tone of the video. I wish there'd be a more regular schedule of episodes but I also appreciate the quality of these few ones, far apart as they may be.
It's every sunday now!
“I think if I was born in this time I would just walk into the sea” LMAOOO
S Q U A L L Y S Q U O O P
Sorry did Ricky Goldsworth show up in place of Ryan?
and.rosie 👏👏👏👏
and.rosie can you please say everything in one comment?
and.rosie your a genius
Yes. Ricky Goldsworth is Fucking back bitches
👏👏👏
life expectancy for a woman in the 1700's was 25-35 years old. She was ancient compared to that.
Abi Foster: mainly cuz of how many people died at birth though. Women that made it past that lived a lot longer
No that was the AVERAGE life expectancy for a man.
Nathan Bruce But she wasn't an exception to that though, the girl had ten kids, did not die at child birth, and lived quite a long life even by today's standards.
Abi Foster Eliza Hamilton lived until her 80’s. For that is non accurate, the life expectancy for a woman back then was 40-55
Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton lived to 97 years old like damn
"Yaar, Mommy!" 😂😂😂
Pau Esin “Ahoy I want gold!!”
How buzzfeed clickbaits: Put Shane and Ryan on the thumbnail.
Sara Starburgers or Eugene
Gertude The Great no. Just no.
How is it clickbait when they're IN the video?
Dove M well think of this, if they had Shane and someone else people would be less likely to click on it.
"Yo what up I'm broke" - John Bonny
Same.
So pirates are kinda like..... Old timey mafias on the ocean?
some were, protection rackets are way more sustainable than thievery
that's one way of describing them lol
Exactly what I said!! La Costa Nostra!!
some of the most interesting characters in history were from the Golden Age of Pirates. Bonny, Blackbeard, Calico Jack, they would all be celebrities nowadays because of their flamboyant characters
Can Joyce and Selorm please become regulars???? Their commentary had me cry laughing
Squalisquoop
Sydney Riley yes! 👏😊
SHE HAD ME DYING ON THIS ONE !!!!! BUT SERIOUSLY WAS IS A SQUALLYSQUOOP ???? These girls are a great addition. Keep them comin' !!!
Omg yes! Their commentary was gold.
*If Shane taught history at my school school would be a lot less dull 😂*
*sees shane and ryan*
Me: Today will be a good day.
*learns its about pirates*
Me: HELL YEAH
Shane is such a happy boy in this episode I love itttt
‘He has a plus sized head, its not his fault’
Callie Johnston Next to Squally Squoop, this is my fave
as a witch i can actually confirm that any time someone breaks an egg into large pieces one of us is chosen at random to immediately teleport directly behind them and we HAVE to eat the whole egg otherwise we can't go home
also my favorite conspiracy theory is that mary and anne escaped prison and ran away to virginia to open a bed and breakfast
Very important to break it because some of us are allergic.
really
this is true
can confirm, i was the egg
"What you never stabbed a guy and threw him in the ocean? Grow up." I'm dead 🤣
only in vegas
So... Petition to start season 2?
Yup lets do that
@@megangrant7412 Shane is continuing it on their independent channel (Watcher Entertainment), and it's now called Puppet History
"He has a plus size head" lolllll
RandomReanna I have one too
the way she said it was so cute!!
okay so i think you've finally found your group for ruining history. i'm gonna need this whole team from now on thanks i haven't laughed that hard in a long time.
karinleigh I’m fine with Sara staying with Shane and Ryan
The group from Battle of Alesia was great as well
SAMMME THEY HAD ME DYING
they should change every time, variety is better
Miss Marie keep Shane and Sarah and rotate the other 2
"I just went to church for 5 min."
I can't stop laughing. I live for her commentary.
I’m living for the two lovely ladies that told Shane he looked intimidating when he really just looks like a watered down Boy George trying to blend in with the common folk
LITERALLY ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT THIS EPISODE 😂 I’ve been looking for a comment to see if anyone else thought he looked like a watered down Boy George 😂
👏when 👏will👏this👏be👏an👏official 👏series 👏
Kaitlyn Forster yeah I thought the same.
I never knew ow much I needed Shane to pierce his ear until this video
“Oh sure, you’ve never stabbed a guy and pushed him into the ocean? Grow up!”
Ryan's pirate name should've been Ricky Goldsworth
Morgan yes!
It's so nice to watch this. It's like a social studies/history review for me since this was apart of my schooling (I live in The Bahamas)
baybeetricia Do you just watch pirates of the Caribbean for history lessons?
Real talk I thought your profile pic was someone I knew and I had to check their Facebook to be sure
Yasmin Scanlon what about the profile picture?
bigbigcheese2 Nah. I watch Pirates of the Caribbean for Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom :)
George Hoyle Really? That's interesting.
19:53 was literally me for all four seasons of “Black Sails” and their portrayal of Anne. And yes, I remain devastated no one ever uttered “squally squoop” on that show.
Okay but *SHANE AND SARA HAVE MATCHING MUGS*
when mom and dad are serving looks AND hot chocolate
-SCREAMSSSS-
and.rosie also where do I get said mug because I love Sara’s
Awww relationship goals
keepcup i think?
whoever does the art for these videos deserves all the medals in the word
I feel like Shane and Ryan kinda switched roles in this show
True !! I never noticed!
I mean tbh I can see ryan being all like "you tease me relentlessly in my show so im gonna do the same to you in yours." XD
