    I just watched your whole series on the 15hp rebuild. Awesome work. I enjoy the positive attitude you have even when things go wrong. I’ve been on the fence about trying to rebuild my 77 Johnson 140, but this has inspired me to give it a try! Thanks!

      @Derrick Smiley I use marine batteries from Walmart. I don't use just deep cycle batteries because I use them as start battery too. If I was just going to run my electronics and trolling motor only. I would buy deep cycle. I can buy a new one every year or two and it will last the season.
      PS I always have at least two batteries on the boat.

I have a 1986 15hp evinrude. I gave 100 bucks for it and it was locked up. I got it free and compression is 85 on one cylinder and 90 on the other. I'm considering rebuilding it soon. I want to rebuild a old out board to see if it would last as long as new one when I am done. If the out board performs like it did when it was new. If I get a thousand hours out of it. That would make it worth my time. I have always been told that a outboard is only good for a thousand hours. That is way a inboard is so much better. Captains that I know that run out boards use both of them to get off shore and only use one the rest of the day. Then the next day use the other one. This way the get twice the time out of them.

    • @davidelton8860
      @davidelton8860 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't know that about outboard's life span....I would guess that it depends on it always having the correct oil/gas mix, a good working water pump, and of course salt water vs. fresh water. With all the work you have put into that 15, I think it would outlast a new one hands down. Back then, those motors were made to last. I have a 1961 Johnson 10hp on a little 14' aluminum V-bottom here that runs great. The fellow I bought it from just did the regular things to it over the years, and she does love her 16:1 oil mix:) Cant wait to see your vid of that 15 running on a boat :)

    Sure hope you put sealer/grease on those screws....Was the water tube grommet OK? I'm sorry you pulled that driveshaft out of the white gearcase, now you have to mess with getting those shift detent balls back in place. How the heck did the prop shaft seals get like that? Sounds real nice buddy, can't wait to see her on a boat purring away...

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did use sealer on those screws, I have had to many problems when others didn't. The water tube grommet looked very good. I made sure I was easy when handling the exhaust tube and water tube. I have no idea how the seal got like that in the lower unit. The bearing look good. I have went this far I was ok with the prop shaft pulling out. I did not try to stop it. I did fine both of the detent balls and the spring. The way the rest of the build went I wanted to be sure the lower unit was ok too. I was pleasantly surprised when it started and sounded so good. Next I am going to put it on the boat and take it to the lake.

    • @fleetwin1
      @fleetwin1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool! Like I said, the original style upper water tube grommets were best, so I'm glad you left it in place....The replacement grommets get crushed in salt water... I can't remember just how those detent balls get reinstalled, perhaps it is not as difficult as the ones used on the 30-35 models....Can't wait to see this beauty on the lake!

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the 15 hp it is possible that the ignition coil is getting hot and breaking down. You did not say how long it runs before it quits. Most of the time it is in the carburetor or the linkage settings. That is what I would check first. On the 6hp I would check the upper water tube grommet make sure that the tube is in it and there is a good seal. You probably already change the lower grommet with the impeller assembly kit. I assume you made sure the gear case works so you know the drive shaft is turning. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting and watching.

    Hey I was just curious when you started this motor the compression test you did was at 60 and 70. Which you said was bad. What is an OK compression for that motor? • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Any time the compression is under 80 that is getting low. The big factor is if one cylinder is a lot lower than the other.

      The fuel pump or the fuel line has a leak some where. If the fuel line looks good and the o rings on each end look good I would say fuel pump.

    I have a 15R77M Johnson motor that I purchased a year ago that's been giving me a hard time, it won't idle. Ive been watching alot of your videos for pointers. Do you sell your outboards somewhere after you fix them?

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When I fix up the old outboards I so far I just let family and friends use them. Selling them would make a lot more sense. That old 1977 Johnson motor you have is a good motor. I had one of those when it came out new. We went to Canada fishing every year. What have you tried so far. With a little time and patience your motor will idle fine. The Johnson 15 HP Start UP video you watched that motor will run in the tank until you shut it off. Just keep idling.

      @@OmFishing thanks for the reply 😊. watching your videos I was able to rebuild and clean the carb with a kit, replace the fuel pump, replace the fuel line, replace the power pack, new spark plugs, replace the water pump with a kit, fresh gas and oil with ring free plus yamalube. When I can get it to start, It'll run if I keep the throttle maxed out but soon as I let off it bogs down and dies.

    Did you do a compression test on this engine??

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did a compression test after it was put back together. It was about 100 on each cylinder. I was disappointed. I thought it would be around 120. I will check after I run it for a while. I will let you know if it comes up.

    Bottom seal/driveshaft guide causing motor to get really tight.. anyone know why?

    • @OmFishing
      @OmFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say gets really tight. Does this happen when the lower unit is installed or when the unit is off. If the lower unit turns free when off I would check the drive shaft pin not seating properly if when on.

    • @Michaelhanley15
      @Michaelhanley15 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It happens when lower unit is disconnected. Just the little seal/guide on the bottom causes the motor to basically lock up if I torque it to spec... I have no idea why.. I have two lower seal/guides that ive tried and they both lock it up. Is there some-sort of spacer or something that im missing?
      Thanks

    I have watched and subscribed to your channel ever since i got my first boat back in the fall of 2018. Your videos were (and are) a huge help for me to get my 1965 Evinrude 6hp running and I thank you for that.
    I featured your channel in my latest video that I put up today. It's a video about what I did right and wrong with my old boat trailer - but I have a section of the video about your channel. I try to feature another TH-camr that I like in each of my videos now.

      Si está hablando de la unidad inferior, retire el tapón de drenaje. El tapón se verá exactamente igual al de la placa de cavitación. Luego, drene el aceite. Coloque la manguera de llenado en la bomba de aceite en el orificio inferior y bombee el aceite hasta que salga por el orificio superior. Vuelva a colocar el tapón en la parte superior y luego retire la manguera en el orificio inferior y vuelva a colocar el tapón. Gracias por ver.
