Johnson/Evinrude 15 hp Outboard Engine Carburetor Rebuild

  • The EASIEST, step by step, do it yourself video on how to rebuild your 15HP Johnson/Evinrude outboard boat engine CARBURETOR. Learn how to rebuild a johnson 15 horse carb. The process is the same for most all carbs, including the Evinrude.
    The rebuild kit is from Sierra. They make a lot of aftermarket parts for boat engines.
    HERE IS A LINK TO THE ONE I BOUGHT ON AMAZON
    amzn.to/2vozGqk -----------CARB REBUILD KIT.
    Sierra part number is 18-7219
    Tools needed are a Phillips and flat head screwdriver.
    The whole project cost about $20 and takes about 1 hour.
    If all you need is a carb gasket change, then why pay a marine mechanic to do a job that is this easy? I highly recommend doing this maintenance each year before the boating season begins.
    Also, change your fuel pump and water pump. Proper maintenance will allow you to have so much more fun on the water.
    Also, make sure you only use rec fuel in your boat engine. I never mentioned this in the video, but very important. Only use ethanol free gas.
    Thanks for watching and please comment and give a thumbs up if the video was helpful.

    One of my favorite videos.
    However, that difficult carburetor nut can be gotten to by removing the pull start mechanism.

    I just subscribed and wanted to let you know what a great job you did on this video. I've been looking at a lot of different ones about the Evinrude 15. I picked one up about 10 years ago and it has been sitting since. Not sure how long it sat before I got it. I'll find out soon what I'm dealing with. Your a gifted teacher. Keep em coming. Cheers.

    It's good to not have you taking off the starter rope assembly therefore you can just count on dropping one of the Nets to hold on the carburetor because you can't get a tool on it and you can't get a hold of it with your fingers unless you got small hands once you take the starter assembly off it is easy to take the carburetor off

    Jake, nice video, I have the same motor on my little fishing boat and I had trouble last weekend with idling, high speed was fine, but idling in the marina gave me few stalls, I reached down on pumped the primer bulb at the tank and it restarted. I first thought fuel pump, saw your video on the pump replacement too, nice job, but I think it unlikely to be the fuel pump if the high speed rev's are reached easily. Maybe I have a bit of gunk in my carb so a cleaning may be needed, I haven't had the carb off before, in fact, I haven't had the motor that long, maybe a few months, anyway, your video was perfectly narrated and recorded, I'm confidant with the cleaning and rebuild after seeing your work, thanks for taking the time to post it!!! Thanks Roy. Listen, it might seem to be obvious, but check this out if you have not done so yet: On the tiller handle tip, there is an idle adjustment knob. Its on the very tip of the handle. When the engine is running, see if you can pick up the idle a bit by turning it either way, left or right.

  • @Gutslinger

    I have an old Johnson 15. Got it years ago. It would run amazingly, and would always start on the first pull. The guy that sold it to us never faxed us a bill of sale like he said he would, so it's just been sitting for years now. The last few times that I used it, I thought that it seemed to be running a little slow on full throttle. Then out of nowhere on rare occasions of running on full throttle, it seemed to pick up speed for a short time. I have noticed that a couple of teeth are broken on the gears near where the throttle handle meets the motor, and the gears won't line up correctly. I doubt that would be the main problem with it picking up speed out of nowhere, since I was already giving it full throttle and couldn't torque the throttle any more.

    you can take the starter pull unit out but dont remove the screw out of it you just keep it in the gear and spring and do not take it out just loosen the big screw and slowly screw it out just enough to where you can pull the manual start out this way you have access to the other nut that holds carburetor on on putting this start back you have to alien the tap on the bottom back with the slot on the motors base pan but this is a steady hand and not letting that bolt come up any father than what it takes to remove the starter spool and hang it over the front of motor base do not remove pull handle the reason for this is you dont want the spring to come out of there and then you will have to watch video on how to rewind and re-install this step is only for the brave unless you been there you did a great job on this video i have done a few and your right on i just took the start unit out because the nut was so tight on that side i had no choice but to get a better access

    Didn't read through all the comments so I don't know if it was mentioned in the comments, but to add something to the rebuild video is that top black "plastic" plate on top of the carb be very careful not to torque down to tight when replacing those phillips screws because that plate can crack, I know because I bought a 1990 15 hp Johnson here lately and that plate was cracked from someone bearing down to much on the screws. That plastic plate is $100 bucks new, outrageous.I have not tried it but I have read that the plastic cracked plate may be saved by JB Weld.

    Thanks for the video! I have been searching the internet for a manual download and I cannot seem to find one. I picked one up a year ago and just now tried it over the weekend. I need to get at least a kill switch for it. Anyways, I am having trouble with the idle and also no water out the "pee hole" I found the pee hole to be plugged, so I will attempt again to see if it works. I saw the comment on the thermostat, I will check into it. My biggest concern was when I was at full throttle, it bogged down, almost stalled then kicked back in. Long story short, I took a swim after that when it kicked the handle out of my hand. Would you have an idea on what may cause that? It is intermittent. I cannot duplicate it every time. Thank you- Anthony

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Alexander Winkler ---> Hi Alexander. Generally, what you want to do is GENTLY turn the screw in to where it seats. Gently is the word because it doesn't have to be closed all the way.... just until you feel the resistance of the screw and you know you have turned it enough. Then turn it back 1 and a half turns. When you get it all back together and you start the engine, that's when you make the fine tuning. Start by continuing to turn the screw counterclockwise just a drop at a time until the engine starts to stumble a little, then at that point turn it back in like a quarter turn. That should be about correct as far as tuning it, and that's where the screw should be until it's ready for any other tune up.

      It’s a safety mechanism that prevents pull starting if you’re in gear and the throttle is wide open. Keeps you from pull starting and getting thrown out of your boat. Mine broke and I didn’t replace. Not needed to run.

    Hi Jake, yep, that was the problem, guess I hit the knob a few times, twisted it and got great smooth idle, thanks for the tip. I replaced the impeller a few weeks ago because the pee hole, (Tell-Tale) wasn't streaming water well, under way I get a slight stream, well the new impeller hasn't helped, I think the line may be clogged, any tips?

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Roy Michael --> Hi. This model engine won't give you much of a water stream, if any, however, I understand your concern. Also it's been a while, but I'm pretty sure your engine has a thermostat which will open only when it gets hot enough. When I get home later, I'll try and refresh my memory...I believe there is a cover under the hood and you can open it and take out the thermostat to test it. (Just drop it in hot water and you should see it open). I'd also flush or blow out the passage ways from the top down. One more thing, if you take the thermostat cover off and start the engine with the earmuffs on the lower unit, you should see that it's pumping water up from the bottom...

    I just bought a 1980's Johnson 9.9 and am trying to get it to run. Rebuilding the carb now. I have a question on the center piece you mention. Is there supposed to be flow through the small brass tube? Mine is clogged and been sitting in carb cleaner for a couple of days and still clogged.
    wondering if I can clean it out with a small piece of wire. Just not sure of the flow path on the small brass tube that the small hose goes into.
    Thanks!!!!!

    • @jakeguitar01
      @jakeguitar01  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      carboman2010 ---> I recommend using compressed air or carb cleaner to clear the ports and passages and jets in your carb. Hold on to it tight so it it doesnt fly across your garage and get lost with the high pressure. Soaking it is fine but might not clean it thoroughly. Be careful running a wire through things because you can damage it.

      Thanks! I just go it cleared. Soaking it for a while in carb cleaner and using a smaller wire and air did the trick! Happy not to drop another $50!!!!!!!
      Thanks again!!!!!

    There is a website on the net called LeRoy's Ramblings, it's a treasure trove of information on these Johnson / Evinrude 15 hp. If you look on there his article on 9.9-15 hp motors in the carburetor article he shows a picture of a homemade modified wrench / carburetor tool for accessing that hard to get to nut.

    Take the 2 bolts off of the coal cord and it would've made it accessible

    Hi. I think that you should've named your video ,,the Hard way'' ,because best way to remove the carb is by just taking the pull start off and you than have easy access to the flat head screw which is holding throttle linkage and than you are able to get to the nut.
    Your way is not best,because using pliers is really wrong.

      Hi. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. The top part of the carb has to come off anyway because there is a gasket there that has to be changed, so I wasn't too concerned about removing it. The amount of extra work involved was negligible, and the pull starter was having some mechanical issues anyway so I didn't want to mess with it until I had the parts in case it fell apart when I removed it. As for the pliers, I agree. Not the best tool for the job, but still worked out very nicely without any damage at all to the nut. Again, thanks for your comment, my friend.

      I 100% disagree. Nothing easy about pulling the pull start. Mine came off so much easier leaving the pull start In place. You should rename your user name the moron way
