  • Mac heads up Forest Service Road 19 just outside Westfir, Oregon in the Willamette National Forest to join the volunteer Scorpions Trail Crew - part of Cascade Volunteers - cascadevols.org - who work in cooperation with the Forest Service to clear trails...logouts...brushing...treadwork.
We've brought the pickup camper for a three day weekend of what's reported to be 100 plus logs down, blocking the trail...and some equestrians who helped clean up and repair the Box Canyon Horse Camp requested our assistance with cleaning up this trail.
Mac heads in late and plans on catching up with the crew on the Chucksney Mountain Trail...which is accessed off the Grasshopper Trail...and we're working counter clockwise...so Mac heads right at the second fork following his Avenza map app...carrying three bottles of chainsaw gas, a half gallon of bar oil, a Fiskars axe, a Husqvarna 562 XP chainsaw with a 28" bar and a True North scabbard...and plenty of tools, chains, first aid gear (not enough water...3 liters wasn't enough!)
It takes hours...four and a half miles in...before Mac catches the crew for the day. Most of them are beat and are ready to head down the trail. Both of the chainsaws they were using were carbureted saws...and at close to 5700 feet of elevation their mixture was off and they ran lean and overheated...fuel was boiling in the tank...so not many trees were cut, and several by hand using Silky Katana Boys or a D handled crosscut saw.
Mac and Sig clean up a few trees and head to the summit while everyone retreats back down the way they came up...and Mac and Sig are treated with gorgeous views of the Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor, Broken Top and a lovely panoramic scene of western Oregon's volcanic peaks.
We head down the trail counting logs...we want to make sure they're still there for tomorrow...because someone has been up here cutting and clearing...we count around 40 more trees before we hit the intersection with the Grasshopper trail...and continue hiking back to Box Canyon for a 11 plus mile loop...a hard, heavy day with the promise of the same hike tomorrow and a lot of work ahead!

Glad to see you on the trail again, thanks for taking us along. You might be out of shape but considering the 'load' you were carrying that might have something to do with it. Enjoyed the count of the down trees on the way out... might as well have fun with it. As a sawyer volunteer in Fla, thank you and the crew for what y'all do for the trails.

@@workshop4128 Awesome... cutting out trails in Florida must be interesting! Make some videos! Maybe one day I'll make it out your way and we can document some of your excellent work!
