Enock great work in doing such documentaries. What makes you great is the fact that you are not just looking to give any stories, yours is fresh work small details that otherwise get ignored by others. You are going places.
I remember this very clearly. Believe it or not, I had almost secured a big interview for Uhuru with the topmost black media personalities in the US, to be held in Los Angeles. The commitment was already there on the US side, and I was waiting for Uhuru's response. Then I got the message back that he wouldn't be traveling. Sigh, it would have been unique. The first and only time I ever heard of something like this happening
I disagree with the idea of a mechanical fault with the jet. A mechanical fault necessitates an aircraft to divert and land immediately at the nearest airport, in this case it would have been Bole Intl Airport.
It is dependent on the nature of mechanical fault. Not all mechanical fault demand immediate landing. Pan pan pan and mayday mayday mayday are both distress signals to ATC but at different degrees. So yes, it it possible to have a mechanical fault and decide to return to base.
in that case wont it have been logical to proceed to Dubai, leave president to board emirates then work on the mechanical fault in Dubai? mechanical fault isnt likely. i agree with Gichiri, it would have landed at either Asmara or Bole@@georgevictorowino3269
I love how you've done this video, and the one about KQ 310. Maybe you can also venture into the previous cases of plane crashes in the country, notably the KQ flights and any other ones that maybe be interesting to be known about. Thank you Kenyan Historian for the good work.
Listening to this documentary was nauseating.....hammering at the same point over and over. Left with a head ache. Enock i am not a hater but I was so eager to listen to it....personally it fell flat.
No worries, ndugu. We have several documentaries you can watch and see if there's any worth your time. Otherwise, thanks for watching even if it didn't meet your expectations
Interesting take, if we assess mechanical issues scenario, the aircraft should have been diverted to the nearest airport with is Bole Airport, and not go all the way back to Nairobi. I concur that there was a Tiff between Kenya and Eritrea. Now investigate the day UK refused to board KAF308 in Kisumu 2018.
If Yemen was bad, they woulda kept a northern trajectory into Saudia then turn. I just looked at Qatar currently in the air right now. It will cross into Saudia before aiming for Doha. I'm sure Emirates out of NBO do the same.
One day. Justice will be served. And he who was responsible shall be covered with shame and rejection and pain. The person responsible is one who wanted to end Uhuru so as to take power in an illegal manner. I think his fate awaits him. I think karma will serve him. I think his fall will be greater, disasters and loud.
@KenyanHistorian. This story is very misleading. There was nothing to do with a technical problem. I saw that aicraft take off and return. It was around the same time that a Notice to Airmen was issued for all aircrafts to avoid flying over Yemen due to the Saudi arabia air bombardment campaign. Kenya Airways flights to the far East ,Dubai and India used the indian ocean route to avoid Yemen. Perhaps the failure of the airforce to take this into account during flight planning led to this air turn back. KQ planes are ETOPS certified which simply means they are aloowed to fly over water for extended range even if an engine fails, they can divert to al alternate airport which is at least 60 minutes away. The prseidents Jet is not certified for that. This means the only route they could use only fly near land. The only option they had was though Saudi arabia for which i believe they had no overflight clearance. The best option was to return back to Base and replan the flight. It would have been very embarrassing for a presidential flight to make a sudden diversion in a foreign country yet they had enough fuel to get back home. Offcourse it caught everyone bu surprise including me seeng GSU police lights flashing from the taxi ways into the state pavilion and seeing the presidential aircraft taxing behind in the dead of night yet ih had departed afew hours earlier. Technical issues would mean a diversion to the nearest suitable airport like Addis Ababa. Lastly, the Pilot in Comand or Captain is the person with the final say in the safe operation of the aircraft and not the flight engineer.
Nice documentary. However, it is important to note that a plane can develop a mechanical problem at any time, though the probability of such an event is very low. I find the assertion that someone should take responsibility for a part or system that fails midflight trivial and not well thought out. Every effort is made to ensure that any aircraft taking off is airworthy. But once in a while, even brand new aircraft can turn back due to a mechanical issue. For your information, there are parts that still fail and are switched off midflight, and you never got to know. But the events are recorded in the aircraft log for follow-up. The question should therefore be, how severe was the failure (or fault)? Not so severe, since the plane was able to fly back. If it was severe, then they would have sought permission to land at the nearest airport, depending on protocol. The plane cannot fly onwards or land at another airport where it will be grounded, if it is capable of flying back to its base. So if it was a mechanical failure, then their assessment and decision to turn back was based on the implications of landing and being grounded at a foreign airport. Remember too that this is a military aircraft!
Kindly do a documentary on presidential helicopter flights, to complete this flight series. Helicopter Call Sign: Harambee 1 Type: AW139 Alternative Call Sign without President Onboard: Jedi
This is the flight that ruined the relationship between the president and his deputy it almost brought war between sudan paramilitary and ethiopia airforce
i had rumours that there was a deliberate move to not clear with Eritrian authorities.. so your guess would be as good as mine on what was planned to happen
Nice attempt. But our investigations as far as aviation is concerned are not up to standard. Watching a whole story, but it's full of questions, and they are as well unanswered..just watch foreign investigation on airplane incidences and accidents...you will understand and learn as well
Hey bro. Thanks. Will try to improve. Problem ya Kenya is access to information and people involved... Most a times we rely on some people opening up...mostly in camera. But we promise to make better ones.
The "mechanical issue" explanation is far fetched. Crew could have landed in a nearer airport within Eritrea, Ethiopia or even Kenya. Nairobi was too far away.
If a plane develops mechanical issues they first initiate the pan-pan call to assess the issues. If they cannot troubleshoot it they declare a full emergency mayday call. At this point they should land at the nearest airport so going back to Nairobi the story doesn't add up that would be risky considering the president was onboard the flight.
Not only the president but any other person in an airborne aircraft. But good point. That was not a mechanical emergency. Nearest airport landing could have cemented that idea
If the plane developed mechanical problems midway as alleged it would have called for an immediate landing. Also instead of flying back for more than two hours, they would as well have continued with the journey and get to Dubai which would also have taken a similar amount of time. The only plausible explanation was that of a risky or closed airspace and cause a detour which would have made the president to miss the Emirates to Los Angeles! Also what makes the narrator lie that jkia realised the president was on his way back just a few minutes to landing? JKIA's traffic control radar can see and recognise planes some as far as 300kms inside Ethiopia...
You have a very valid point bro but also remember State House, MFA and Airforce seek clearance for the presidential jet from countries it will cross way ahead of travel... So if it wasn't mechanical, someone still let the president fly without his security being assured...
Some falsehoods shared. This jet has a 2 man cockpit, not 3. Where does the Flight Engineer sit? Secondly, the Captain is the one who makes the final decision. Not anybody else. Not even a flight engineer for aircrafts that have a 3 man cockpit. 3rd, a mechanical faults necessitates immediate landing at the safest airport. Not high tail back home. I think his US trip itinerary changed prompting the return home. Saved Kenyans tax dollars too
the plan was to shootdown the plane once it entered the Yemen air space, and use the war that was going on in the country as an excuse. It was the beginning of the end of his alliance and relationship with that guy we all know. The difference is irriconsilable.

It was not a mechanical issue
There was bombardment of air strikes in Yemem by Saudi Arabia which was a sudden war and its a crucial air filight path.
