- A very funny moment happens when the turntable brings the next contestant in the wrong way. Gene is in shock! We also have audio problems with the think music during the beginning of this episode. Bobby Van, Elaine Joyce, Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers, Richard Dawson, and Nanette Fabray
Strange to see Brett on the bottom row. Bobby Van wa a very young looking 44 here (Elaine was 28). Sadly he died in 1980 at 51 yrs from cancer.
I thought he died from a brain aneurysm? So did Bert Convy?
Elaine kinda looks like she could be the daughter of Mr and Mrs Howell from Gilligan's Island. Probably just the hairstyle and the pearls idk. She is always gorgeous and delightful.
I had to look up Elaine cause I could not remember what else she did besides Game Shows. Reading her bio that she & Bobby were not happily married and tried to get a divorce in 68 a week after being married , but it was never finalized so they continued being married for 12 years. Bobby was a handsome man
But she was dumb as a fencepost.
@@sebastianhamilton5892 I don't think she was dumb at all, although I think she played that up as part of her persona. Watch her play Password because she was an excellent player! She gave great clues and was really good at guessing the answers as well!
I thought the same, like a young Mrs. Howell. I like her other hairstyles better. This makes her look older.

6:07 Turntable turns opposite direction (clockwise) instead of the normal counter- clockwise.
Goofy things things like that happened all the times. It helped make MatchGame what it was!

She's doing much better than she did last time. I think she caught on to what was expected of her.

I admit I didn't warm up to her on her first week a while back, but today she's a hoot. I was so glad she gave Patrick his second win so that their romance could continue! Then I was crushed when he didn't even call on her for a suggestion! (Maybe he regretted it when he didn't get squat that super match round.)

I looked up Gen. Joseph Hooker, that CNR referred to. His information was off. The general did not provide women for his troops. He did throw frequent wild parties, at which hookers were probably present, although it would be my guess that the parties were exclusively for officers. Carousing with enlisted men would have destroyed his ability to command them.
Finally, the term "hooker" predates the civil war by nearly 2 decades. It originated in Manhattan.
Also, Gen Hooker was not active in the Revolutionary War, but rather the Civil War.
@@grayadam Charles told that story on multiple occasions when he gave "hooker" as an answer. Think he may have even said Civil War once.

Nice clean old Quad videotape footage and punchy audio. What a treat.
I remember the days. Quad was hot for about a year then fizzled. But I remember the idea.
@@ts.elliot5870 Quadruplex videotape. 2" tape. Reel to reel. 15 inches per second. The gold standard from the late 1950s to the 1980s. The original hi-def. Not quad stereo which fizzled out quickly. TH-cam compression doesn't even do this old quad footage justice.
Patrick looking very Steve Austin-y in his safari jacket there. The show Gene referred to that featured Bobby and Elaine was "Broadway", a 90 minute special headed by Ed Sullivan, about his 40 years covering Broadway shows as a journalist and interviewer. Nobody must remember it because it has no user reviews on IMDB.com.

Isn’t that strange? That seems to happen to me a lot. Although, it’s usually reversed. I’ll look someone up, then they pass soon after. I Googled Albert Finney to see what he was up to, and a couple days later he died.

So many of the male contestants on here are several inches taller than Gene, and so many female contestants are about the same height as Gene, that I've begun to doubt the veracity of claims that he was 6'1".
