Another week, another married couple. We've had Brett and Jack Klugman, Dick Gautier and Barbara Stuart, and now we have Bobby Van and Elaine Joyce! This was the first of five weeks for Bobby, an actor and singer who honed his skills in the Catskills, initially as a trumpeter in a band, before being asked to fill in for a song-and-dance man. A star was born, and he soon found himself appearing in Broadway musicals and eventually onto film and television. In terms of other game shows, he hosted the flop that was Show-Offs (another Goodson-Todman production) and a series of Make Me Laugh. Sadly a brain tumour would cut his life short in 1980 at the age of 51. I've been dying to write about Elaine for ages, because she's a fan favourite who would appear in many more weeks of Match Game. It's not hard to see why - as well as having such a fun and bubbly personality (and a very creative mind), she's also bloody gorgeous too! Elaine made her film debut as an extra in West Side Story, she soon carved a niche in musical films before moving into television, having recurring roles in soap operas and TV dramas and sitcoms, which is where we are at the time of this episode. She would have her first starring role in the 1976 private eye drama series City of Angels alongside former MASH star Wayne Rogers. Game show-wise, she also appeared on Tattle Tales with her husband, and also appeared on Password Plus and its successor, Super Password. She finally got her own show in 1986 when she took the Jim Lange role (or should that be the Cilla Black role for us Brits?) as the presenter of the first season of The All New Dating Game. Elaine's final Match Game-related appearance was in 1984 in the ill-advised Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour. As of February 2018 Elaine Joyce is the last surviving panelist from this week. Fourth week for Charles. Not quite a regular yet. But we'll get there. Brett demoted to the fourth seat again. Second and final week of Nanette Fabray. I've already written at length about her so I won't repeat myself here.
8:49 gene and charles like the theme song, they would soon grow tired of it, gene constantly complaining about it. 8:58 hilarious exchange between nanette and gene.
I'd guess that was one of the first instances of it coming to the public's attention. I didn't care for that contestant's rudeness in laughing at Nanette's question, which was not ridiculous, especially since tai chi isn't really dancing.
Blakeney-Spreaker, round 1, question A: "Tell me this counts, judges: SKINNY-DIP." (Ding!) "Thank you." Question B: "Naturally, they feed the lions pretty well before doing this trick - a little *too* well, in this one's case. LOST HIS LUNCH." (Bzzt!) Round 2, question B: (lay out) Question A: (just holding up the card, probably) BABY Super Match, part 1: ABBY Part 2: WIPE Spreaker-King, round 1, question B: "Of course, in Galahad's day they used chain mail, and that makes it hard to SNEAK UP ON PEOPLE." (Bzzt!) Question A: "Raquel was in 'Fantastic Voyage', wasn't she? So the doll SHRINKS." (Bzzt!)
Those of you thinking $6550 isn't that much, that's enough to buy two nice cars in 1973!
Elaine’s face at the end of each question makes me laugh every time. No wonder they start the camera on her lol

Have you seen the shots of the audiences?
The reason they put Brett on the lower tier is so Bobby Van and Elaine Joyce can sit next to one another since they are married
Then why no phuckin' ring on Bob?
@@joeambrose3260 Not all men wore a ring..... They were married from 1968 to 1980

LOL at someone calling Match Game "class and civility".
Really in their stride now. Interesting to see the early, early episodes.
noticed that too, the questions are now longer and funnier than "john and mary went to _____."
