My brother joined 3 years before me - I joined in 1980. He had already taught me how to bull up my boots
    And keep good kit.
I could already run well as did cross country at school and rugby.
Thirty joined up -28 of us were 16 and 2 were 18.
Fitness and kit are a lot of it as well as square bashing,
Gym is probably the most disciplined part of it.
Swimming test, shooting, damaged control and firefighting as well as assault courses.
They have probably added more since I was in.
You get maths and English tests, naval knowledge and church parade.
As well as passing out parades.
You really do bond as a group.
It takes you through civilian to being grooved into the naval life.

I went in as what was called a stores accountant but now called logistics.
I wanted to be a marine engineer but unfortunately found out that I was colour blind.
I just wanted to be in so this was the job I picked in the end.

Remember as they will tell you, you don't have to be Superman when you get there. Just a good level of fitness will help. The Marines will get you fit enough pretty quickly and trust me they are horrible doing it, but you learn alot about yourself at the same time. If you can boff up on your knowledge of the Navy and our current platforms and what they do roughly that may help with Naval General Training (NGT). You will be shown how to do everything when you get there so don't worry about that either, and you will work together as a division to get it done whilst in the mess deck. If you are rubbish at ironing but good at bulling shoes, then no doubt you will be on shoes and your ship mates will be help you iron. Its a family for your 8 weeks or 10 as it is now. And then when you join your ship it will be the same, but your family can then depend on eachother to stay alive and not worry about your shoes being shiny. She is right that Church will be amazing. Our Bish used to record Match of the Day for us to watch for an hour after church and you were left alone. Eat as many biscuits as you can!!! You do it once at Raleigh and its amazing if you live it breathe it and love it, and also hate it whilst you are there as that is part of the point of it all. You leave a better and stronger person and then its straight into phase 2 professional training which is not as rigerous certainly, but is still lots of the BS factor with marching everywhere and polishing shoes etc...and then the hardwork really begins when you finally join your ship, but then you start to reap the benefits that the Navy has to offer also. A side note is that I can't imagine what it is like to have had my phone though during basic training!!!!!!!!!!! You will certainly get shouted at when you never did anything wrong yourself and punished severely like standing in the rain etc, but suck it up, grin and bare it and you will be much better when it happens to you again onboard, and that is when you get really threaders with it all. The joke is that you are putting your notice in on days like that and you may have lots of those days. The collective punishments are a way of building individual repsonsilbilty towards the good of the team, but you will get some wasters that never understand that...you will deal with them as a group on your own no doubt or they get binned. People's fingers have a way of getting caught in hatches for example and I guarantee nobody will know it happened how if any questions are asked. So from that perspective, the collective certainly works in more ways than one and its normally problem solved. Or getting zipped up in your kit bag for a while or tapped to a table or something good like that. Just for you to be here though and asking questions shows me that you will do fine. Good luck.

My daughter only had the weekend 'off' after finishing basic training. She 'passed out' on the Friday and started phase 2 on the Monday. She's a submariner and her phase 2 was also at Raleigh. Yes, she had weekends off and it was much much more relaxed then basic training! You're allowed 'out' when you want pretty much. Some of her friends had 'hold over' for a few weeks before they started their training; depends on the branch you're going into etc.

I was 37 when I applied in December 2020 for the Engineering Technician (Marine Engineering) position. 38 when I had my formal interview, and if Capita get their act together with my medical assessment, I'll hopefully get a start date towards the end of the year or early next year when I'll be nearly 39.
I had a chat with my recruiter after my interview about the age factor, and he said the same as any recruit, they break you down and build you back up in the militarised way that's needed, but he also told me that the instructors might have a word in your ear about the young recruits who're hanging stuff out of windows, not pulling their weight with the kit musters and PT etc.
If this does happen, I'll just use it as a way to train my social skills within a team, and how to be diplomatic and get the best out of myself and others. It could put you in good stead for later in your career.

I haven't lost hope in our youth, especially when they make such rare and demanding decisions such as joining the armed forces.
