Danny is the best guitar player I've ever seen. Saw him at the Bayou in DC in 91. He lived down here is So. MD. Thank Johnny. RIP Danny Gatton.

Danny Gatton had his ovn style. Did first hear about him with Guitarplayer magazine. There was a plastic record with the ''nitpicking''. There was a brutal guitarpicking and speed there very few can match. It's not only singel lines, but also cord movement and pulloffs. Can hear he do some B3 comping. He did really like these B3 players as Joey DeFrancesco. I did like the performance Johnny Hiland do with 'Funcy Mama' and Arlen Roth. This feel like a tribute for Danny Gatton.

So true, I honestly never understood when Gatton would get lumped in with some of the other country players. He certainly had shared some of the same influences but didn't sound like them. He had a more raw tone and played more bombastic (at times) than players like Brent Mason, Albert Lee, Jerry Donahue etc. To me a lot of those players become indistinguishable from eachother. It's worse today, spend a few nights watching top tier Nashville players at Robert's....they're all Gods but also sound very similar. Gatton is immediately recognizable.

Only a player as fine as Johnny Hiland could get us inside Danny Gattons unique playing. I had the good fortune of seeing Danny play live a few times and he was something else. It's good to see that his playing is getting the attention and respect it deserves.

Musically-speaking, the closest thing to immortality is to influence others and have them carry your ideas forward after you are gone. This is a wonderful and obviously heartfelt tribute to Danny Gatton by Johnny Hiland - and he really hits the nail on the head by saying that no one can play "exactly like" Gatton - which is true - but that one can learn from his style and try and incorporate his innovations and ideas in one's own playing. Isn't that what guitar heroes are all about, no matter who we are or who we idolize and respect?
I would never presume to speak for the late Gatton, but I have a hard time imagining that he would be anything but pleased as can be that such a monster of a player like Hiland is so influenced by his style. And I have no trouble at all imaging them hanging out on the porch or in the studio trading licks and swapping stories and just being pals. Or maybe even talking hot-rods and muscle cars or something.
I had the pleasure of speaking with Johnny on the phone some years back and he was just as nice and down-home of a person as you'd ever hope to meet. A true gentleman as well as one of the world's finest guitarists. And I count seeing Danny G. twice live and in person as highlights of my musical life. Sure do miss him...

"Had to put a little Johnny Hiland love on that with a bend on the end" Imagine if Elvis had played the guitar like JH, we'd all be living in a blissed out rocknoll other-world dimension somewhere south of Alpha Centauri.

Danny said in an interview that he used a special Leslie cabinet he built for use with his Maggie dingus box. Said it took three men and a boy to move it around though. 😂

He could control the rotation of the horns with that box, among other things.

Johnny, its a shame not to see you with Ernie ball guitars . They sounded so much better and to me there is a bit of a difference in your playing .

@Enlightened Martial Artist: Yes it does. Just about anyone familiar with Gatton's sound would say these licks are reminiscent of his playing.

Doesn't seem too enlightened when it comes to Gatton.
