  • CHECK OUT PART TWO: • Wildwood Story Time / ...
Let's take a moment to appreciate something other than guitar shredding for a moment. Sure, we live and breathe stunning guitars. We all quest after tone, and want to see players tear it up online for hours on end, but there's something deeper that goes when you see a player run up and down the fingerboard. There's depth to the mind of a guitarist that needs to be appreciated -- history, ideas, creativity, expression, pseudo-insanity -- all of it exists beneath the surface, and sometimes we just need to take a little time to listen. Join us for this special series -- Story Time with Greg Koch.
In this video Greg talks about the influence of Danny Gatton, and shows us a few cool tricks!

My friend used to manage a place in Dallas where young artists EJ and SRV would play together. He would invite players to sit in with them. Adrain Legg played there w/ Eric several times when he was with PBS in Dallas. l was told Stevie Ray refused to play with Danny Gatton one night after a near by Gatton show at Sons of Herman hall. Danny played w/ Eric for about an hour at the club 'Tango's'. Jaws dropped to the floor. SRV was a no show. He was very picky about who he played w/ tho he obviously broke that w/ Beck but he didnt want to be upstaged on the TX blues game which Danny could do. I saw SRV and EJ there together about once per month for a couple of years but missed the Gatton set dang it.

Nice tribute. I was surprised that you didn't mention the "N.Y. Stories" jazz CD that had Roy Hargrove and Joshua Redman on it with Danny. His tribute to Lenny Breau called "One For Lenny" is one of of the greatest virtuosic guitar compositions I have ever heard. The entire CD is just tremendous.

Hey I came across a few of your videos a while back for the first time and loved them! I got a new iPad and I wasn’t able to watch videos for a while then I wanted to watch your videos again and made the mistake of not remembering your name. I’ve been trying to find you for a few months and finally the algorithm popped up one of your videos and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been playing rock guitar for a while and recently got into this whole chicken picking rockabilly music and I never thought I would ever be into this type of music but this is where the best guitar players are at. You talk about how Danny Gatton was an influence on you and now your this generations Danny Gatton and your influencing many other guitar players today.

I had never heard of Danny Gatton until a few weeks ago when a performance came up on my TH-cam feed. I didn't know what to expect and I'm not easily impressed. What I watched absolutely floored me. He was crazy good and hugely entertaining. He had a few gimmicks like playing with a bottle and playing with a cloth over the strings. Normally gimmicks would put me off but his playing was stunning. I'm getting into Danny Gatton now. What a tragic loss he is to the music world.

The Guitar Player, Unknown Greats had Danny on the cover with a mask covering part of his face and huge bonus, the square tear out record (no auto cue!!!) with Nitpickin. It's great when you're in the horse latitudes and something comes along and pulls you right out of your doldrums and kicks you back into the game. Danny did that for me and I'm eternally grateful. If originality is a fresh pair of eyes Danny's 20/20 will light up the horizons of your playing like none other. Greg I saw you doing a Fender promo in Lynnwood Wa/Kennelly Keyes Music. Can't tell you how cool it was to be sitting next to the 16 yro kid that won the Baja Tele, I thought he was gonna pop. I had the same number minus one. I already had guitars but I saw by his Mom's face this was a golden moment. SIDENOTE: YOUR BAND WAS IN THE SLOT with Robbens old drummer and a great bass player

A quick Danny Gatton story, I never met him, but a friend was taken bass lessons from Danny Gatton in MD. So this was always a topic of conversation for us, and basically I would ask him about Danny Gatton. One night, we were talking and he said, "You know there was this kid that would come by and man this kid was young like under ten years old and was a demon on the guitar. For the life of me I cannot remember his name, but it had a lot of vowels in it. When you see it or it that name you would know who I am talking about." Ten years late, I went over to a friend's house to jam and I heard the most amazing guitar ever. I asked who is that playing? The host Joe Bonamassa, he was a student of Danny Gatton's.
