This genuinely opened my eyes. For so long I’ve been feeling stuck, knowing that I haven’t made any progress in life like I _want_ to. To cope with those insecurities, I turn to self pity and doomscrolling because it helps me to avoid those feelings of shame, guilt, and frustration. In the end, it never helps, and I know this, but it’s a bad cycle of bad habits. I’ve been feeling disappointed in myself, thinking that if I just had motivation or energy, that I could accomplish even the smallest amount of progress and break those bad habits. I knew my mindset was holding me back, but I was waiting for some sort of curtain to drop and the clarity to somehow appear, I didn’t realize how MUCH it was my mentality, though. Knowing that what I “should”be doing is the same as what I truly want has genuinely helped me see that I CAN improve my life, and that there’s literally nothing holding me back from achieving personal goals. Thank you.
Also, I went to my notes as soon as this video ended and wrote down everything that came to my mind, so I’ll share it here: What I should do, is actually what I WANT to do Know the difference between compulsion and satisfaction. You may act compulsively to have temporary satisfaction, but that’s not real. Doing what feels good in the moment makes you feel terrible and anxious, but doing what you “should” do is actually what you want to do. What you should do is what you want to do, because what you really want in life is genuine satisfaction, relief, happiness, and improvement. Don’t scroll on your phone for hours and waste your day by putting off what you “should” be doing, bringing guilt and shame and insecurity, instead do what you want to do. If you want to be a good artist, then DRAW. If you want to get good grades, then do your work. If you want to improve in any area of your life, don’t believe that the work it takes to make progress is “bad” and that temporary satisfaction is better; put it into a new perspective. “If I do this assignment, even if I don’t want to, it will actually give me what I want, which is good grades and relief from anxiety. I may feel like getting on my phone instead because it’s easier and I’m given all sorts of things to do on it, but in the end, if I spend 10 hours on social media, then I’ve made no progress at all, and I’ll just feel terrible in the end, but if I’ve spent even just 2 hours on my assignments, then I’ve made progress, I’ll feel good about myself, I’ll have less to worry about for the future, and it will give me security in my goal of having good grades.” “If I want to be a good artist, then I need to stop comparing myself to others on social media and just start drawing. i think the focus on "games = compulsion = bad" is way too much in this video, like, he got back to some games after having a productive day, how's that gonna hurt him? the difference is, now he's not doing that 24/7 but integrating that into a productive lifestyle and things like that are healthy asf if you mantain the balance, we all gotta have fun sometimes, there's no need to completely cut off what you enjoy just because that's "healthy for you", that's like cutting yourself off the food completely to lose weight only then to compulsively overeat bc you're really hungry, that's not gonna be nice for you too

As someone who majorly changed the trajectory of my life in my early to mid 20s: Try something new. If you do not know what brings you fulfillment, the most important part is the realisation and acceptance that you arent fulfilled where you are right now. Have the courage to try out something new. For yourself, nobody else. Understand what part of your mind is feeling like you're just trying to live up to others expectations.
As someone who has and still is suffering the same things, trying new things everyday and seeing what truly brings you joy from those new things can help you find what you genuinely want as a person. What type of happiness you are seeking from yourself. Try just going outside for at least 5 minutes, read one page of a book, bake something simple just for you. From that you can pick snd choose what youd want to try more often and look forward to bring happy with.
Try looking into Islam, without any prejudices. Read the Qur‘an and learn about Islam through sources Muslims believe in, understand the fundamentals of the religion, as Islam really teaches how to live life
"Compulsion and genuine satisfaction" I can't believe how I've fallen into these traps and led myself to path of self-destruction by thinking that scrolling all the time, lazing around is what I wanted. But often at the end of the day, I felt so unhappy and that there was something missing but could never figure it out. After seeing this video, I recalled the times I worked hard, for example during finals, while keeping the phone away, I got good scores. It felt rewarding to see the scorecard. I regret so many things for I had let myself become this doom scrolling zombie but no more now. I want a real fulfilling life. I will identify these "compulsions" and stay far away from them. That's it.

I think the common misconception is that we're ignorant of what's good for us, but as this video has to awkwardly shift around, is everyone already knows that. We don't do the fulfilling things because life is exhausting us, we're anxious about surviving, being fired, being attacked all the time. And we have to repress our impulses to fit in, to protect the little we have. So is it any wonder when we get a break we use it to soothe? To degen. To indulge our repressed impulses? So no, we're not just ignorant of what's good for us, it just that it takes a lot of discipline to avoid the pain relief; the bad for us things. I think we first have to accept it's not our fault, we're reacting to a hostile world. It is (however unfair) still our responsibility. But it's worth it to take your life back.
Now add addiction into the mix. I’ve unbrainwashed myself and know what the right thing to do is, but cannot escape. Everyday I fail again and again and because I have the clarity to understand what’s right and wrong, I have only the ability to sit back and watch myself destroy what’s left of my life.

The message of this video is though that it isn't really pleasure, but a compulsion. That people / society / and later you tell yourself that this is pleasure, when it's not. Repeatedly doing the same over and over again is not pleasure, but a compulsion that overrides everything else and a *memory* of pleasure.
This is like how schools do it, they always tell you what you should do, instead of saying what you want to do is the same thing and they're only giving what you need to do to accomplish what you want to do
Fr. Recently my motivation was actually working, and I worked on like three animations I'm proud of, which is rare for me bc I'm usually art blocked. But motivation for doing what I HAVE to do, which is my enormous amount of homework, due on the first day of school, which is in 4 days? I barely did any of that. As someonee who's lived what Billy is living for the past 7-8 years I can safely say living the easy life gets old eventually. Making sure your place is clean, maintaining a garden, setting up a Christmas tree in the holidays, things that I thought didn't matter when I was younger. I now realize all those things absolutely do matter to keep yourself sane and feel fulfilled.
I am Billy😢 I used to be the "golden child," the academic over achiever, I loved success and praise. Now I'm crippled by the thought of initiating many important tasks. I've made the distinction before between complusion and genuine satisfaction, but it often isnt top of mind. Thank you for this sobering reminder that my most authentic self actually wants to win, again❤
I relate to this very much! I’ve always been very academically inclined because it’s what I’m supposed to do. Being academically inclined has brought me great opportunities, don’t get me wrong, but it for sure didn’t allow me to discover more of myself. The fact that it’s easier for me to be doing homework all the time rather than actually doing activities that truly fulfill my creativity and passion is concerning. This is coming from someone who is studying graphic design and photography, so it’s expected for me to be naturally very creative, yet I struggle to come up with ideas for myself. My work has mostly been determined by what others expect of me, NOT what I actually want to experience. It’s quite sad, but I do want to make a change because I can’t keep on living without creativity and inspiration forever. Hope your journey to become the best version of yourself goes well! @@gustaviyo take comfort my friend I was/ am in the exact same boat. However as time (and age) has passed I have struggled to find a balance. Treating my day job as the source of funding my creative pursuits. This small change in thinking was such a blessing and changed everything. Also, I’ve had to start small- as simple as taking a sketch pad everywhere and sneaking in time to sketch wherever I can. On the phone- doodling, at lunch a quick street scape, at home on the couch… I haven’t got the $$$ for all my resources/ or the space but (like you) I need to breath- making a start like this has given me hope, kept me focused and continually looking/ thinking of ways on how I can find more time, expand my resources and how I could have a studio space… I’m currently exploring expanding cupboards: they close up to look like a wardrobe but when you open them they fold out with a table, shelving and draws… God Bless, I hope this helps. :)
this came out at a great time. i've fallen into habits like overeating, a lack of exercise, and more because it feels good to relax that way in the moment, but it's almost always worse afterward. i started going on walks again a couple weeks ago and it's helped a lot along with some other stuff. i definitely need to sit down and think about the things that i enjoy doing in the moment *and* can look back on with joy and satisfaction

People have to know it takes years of experimentation and failed tactics to unbrainwash yourselves. But you won't jump directly from 0 to 10. It'll be gradual and that's why the journey will be good.
I'm glad I stumbled across this video, as it felt like exactly what I needed right now. One thing I already knew though is that the more struggle you go through to finish something (fulfilling) the better it will feel once it's done. Life is boring, mundane, and frankly pointless without struggle. In school, this looks like being presented with material that is way above what you know. If you take the right steps, you learn quicker and more effectively than if the material was easier. In work, if you're given a tight deadline on a project that's above your pay grade you will feel more accomplished once it's done than if the job was easy, because you had to fight to finish it. Weird how the brain works.

Billy running off when he first heard that he can do what he wants is just like me and others who read, watch, or hear something to get what we feel are the key points without actually consuming the entire message that makes those key points make sense. The problem with this is that we are actually so close to getting the full message at that point, and if we just spent a little more time really listening to the rest of the content, we could save so much more time in the future when trying to apply our incomplete advice to our lives. This raises an interesting question. The thing is that we do that in order to avoid wasting time going through the fluff in the message. In a perfect world, everything that everyone has ever said will be very important to everyone who hears it. Sadly, that is not the case. This also becomes more complicated when we realise that what one person may consider fluff (unimportant information) varies depending on their experiences and goals. Therefore, the question is *how do we get better at finding the complete information that we need quickly without having to go through all the fluff?* The question is important because we can't simply afford to just consume everything in existence. There's only so much time that we have to live, and it's draining away with every second regardless of your station in life.
This is such a mindf*ck. Logically, the only way Joey can create a video that so perfectly captures this trap of compulsion is if he also has experience with being trapped in this dark place himself. But then, I think to myself, he has the willpower and discipline to produce, shoot, edit the video, plus lead a balanced life in between (presumably)... how is this possible? He connects so accurately to people like me who are wasting away on their phones day in and day out, and the only way to do that would be if he was also going through that... but then this video comes out with a mindset shift/solution that shows he's also found the way out. My life actually took a turn after my diagnosis And meds , before then no Amount of self help books or videos helped. Although í crash whenever i come of my meds. My point is fOr a normal brain sure these help but if not your going to be in a consistent battle with yourself, the world and body.

That is something that I discovered myself a few years ago when I lost a ton of weight and stopped gaming so much. It was hot and sunny outside when I started asking myself "I obviously don't enjoy sitting at home alone, so what's stopping me from going outside swimming and enjoying the day with someone? " I start asking myself the same question whenever a similar situation arises, this mindset changed my life completely and I'm so much happier and healthier.

Which was absolutely wrong. I stopped thinking about others and just go with the flow now. I'm not perfect, but damn life has so much more to it than what I was doing before (gaming, sleeping, working, youtube) Weird thing is, gaming is also much more fun now that I have more things going on.
@@sh0bm0 yeah that's a tough spot you're in. I know this issue, I was pretty much alone and also in home office, so didn't even meet people at work. Only thing you can do, is evaluating your position and identity options. Go on breakes with your colleagues, call your grandma more often, spend more time with your parents. Don't let opportunities pass where you could meet new people (for example a colleague wants you to participate in something) Do this regularly and eventually it will become a habit and people will feel more drawn to you.
People seek motivation from self help books. But for me nothing can be more inspirational than a good ficiton book. Like the one I read recently which is Voyagers of Hell. Highly recommendable.
This resonates so much and reminds me of when I first get into self help, consuming so much self help content: books/videos, thinking that I am improving and it can solve everything but in fact nothing has really changed. After a while, I lose interest towards those content and back to the slump. This goes to show that external things won’t take you so far unless it is intrinsically driven by our mindset and willingness to just do it. I’m still working on it everyday by taking real action and I wish everybody all the best with your journey.
It's not solely about the mindset. Understanding how our reward mechanisms can be hijacked by simple pleasure to avoid that trap is all well and good. But as you describe it leads nowhere when you can't, within a reasonable timeframe, achieve the kind of life our brains are designed for. Meaning, living as part of a community that you care for and that cares about you. Spending your working hours on something you feel makes sense. In general: finding a sense of purpose. Without that, it's always an uphill battle, that we sooner or later give up.
this video just randomly popped up on my feed and i'm glad it did, it truly felt like i was watching a movie based on my day to day life and once I realized that what you should do is really what you end up wanting to do, it just gave me even more motivation to finally quit all of these bad habits that we sometimes develop without even noticing. It was really unsettling watching him keeping the same behavior, despite all of the advice he got, especially since it felt like it was me doing it. from this day on, I'll make my best effort in getting rid of this lifestyle and hopefully in the future I can give an update of how everything changed for the better.

most inspirational video I have ever seen, I have read books like "atomic habits" and "dopamine", I grabbed their ideas but never really want to put it into my life, thank you for your video, it really brings my desire of making self-improvement up
It doesn't take long for a pleasurable thing to become a habit. Once it does, it's helpful to practice awareness. Meditation is something that has really helped me, it clears my mind, gives razor sharp focus, gives me a taste of transcendental bliss, and afterwards I am hyper aware of every thought and feeling I experience. Don't resist the urge to indulge in a habit, for example, doom scrolling youtube shorts. Instead, notice the desire to do it, and whilst you're doing it, reflect on the experience. Think to yourself, "am I enjoying this?". Usually when I'm indulging in the internet I'm not even enjoying doing it, I'm simply doing it out of habit, and as a form of escapism. When you're watching video after video, scrolling through meme after meme, it doesn't take long to go into a "zombie state" where you're just kinda not even thinking or conscious but rather just staring at the screen, the entire experience of your being being on whatever you're focusing on. Then, when you actively reflect on what your doing, and realise that you actually AREN'T enjoying it, you won't want to do it anymore. Though I'm not much better to be honest. When I'm exhausted I easily indulge in the internet and video games and eating rubbish and not exercising, meditating, working, reading, socialising, enjoying life... Good luck, hope this strategy helps.

The videos just keep getting better and better. It’s like my life’s lessons are being expressed through video for others to see. Luckily, I already know a lot of this stuff. I’ve been there. but knowing that others may be watching this, feeling unsatisfied and unmotivated, gives me deep satisfaction because they are seeing what they need to see, just like I did. I hope they can enact the changes they need to.

The mindset shift that had the biggest impact on my life was to understand that pleasure and happiness are NOT the same thing. Once I was able to disentangle them, it was easy to see how I was actually spending my time chasing pleasure not happiness.

@@duolingoowl920 Ehh. You’d be surprised, most neurodivergent people are predisposed because of chemical imbalance. But yes, for others it can be external.
The thing about mental illnesses is that they can be mitigated. It's not easy, I have ADHD and MDD, and some days are always the color beige, no matter how hard I try... but I used the resources available to me to sit down and get the bottom of those issues. They're both chemical imbalances for me; I take meds for the MDD, and use some coping mechanisms for the ADHD. Some days it doesn't work out, I'm not as productive as I want to be, but there's always tomorrow. We can always try again.

This genuinely opened my eyes. For so long I’ve been feeling stuck, knowing that I haven’t made any progress in life like I _want_ to. To cope with those insecurities, I turn to self pity and doomscrolling because it helps me to avoid those feelings of shame, guilt, and frustration. In the end, it never helps, and I know this, but it’s a bad cycle of bad habits. I’ve been feeling disappointed in myself, thinking that if I just had motivation or energy, that I could accomplish even the smallest amount of progress and break those bad habits. I knew my mindset was holding me back, but I was waiting for some sort of curtain to drop and the clarity to somehow appear, I didn’t realize how MUCH it was my mentality, though. Knowing that what I “should”be doing is the same as what I truly want has genuinely helped me see that I CAN improve my life, and that there’s literally nothing holding me back from achieving personal goals. Thank you.
Also, I went to my notes as soon as this video ended and wrote down everything that came to my mind, so I’ll share it here:
What I should do, is actually what I WANT to do
Know the difference between compulsion and satisfaction. You may act compulsively to have temporary satisfaction, but that’s not real. Doing what feels good in the moment makes you feel terrible and anxious, but doing what you “should” do is actually what you want to do. What you should do is what you want to do, because what you really want in life is genuine satisfaction, relief, happiness, and improvement.
Don’t scroll on your phone for hours and waste your day by putting off what you “should” be doing, bringing guilt and shame and insecurity, instead do what you want to do. If you want to be a good artist, then DRAW. If you want to get good grades, then do your work. If you want to improve in any area of your life, don’t believe that the work it takes to make progress is “bad” and that temporary satisfaction is better; put it into a new perspective.
“If I do this assignment, even if I don’t want to, it will actually give me what I want, which is good grades and relief from anxiety. I may feel like getting on my phone instead because it’s easier and I’m given all sorts of things to do on it, but in the end, if I spend 10 hours on social media, then I’ve made no progress at all, and I’ll just feel terrible in the end, but if I’ve spent even just 2 hours on my assignments, then I’ve made progress, I’ll feel good about myself, I’ll have less to worry about for the future, and it will give me security in my goal of having good grades.”
“If I want to be a good artist, then I need to stop comparing myself to others on social media and just start drawing. I have a goal, and reaching towards it feels a whole lot better than staying where I’m at with a bunch of insecurities.”
“I want to build my relationship with Jesus, but getting on my phone in morning instead of reading my Bible doesn’t help at all, and is more damaging than beneficial. I may feel like doing that, but it’s not what I want. I want to spend time with my God, I want to improve, so I have to do what will bring genuine progress and satisfaction and growth, which is giving my attention to Him, even when I don’t feel like it.”
I can do whatever I want, which means that I can scroll for hours, or do good things with my time. I can do whatever I want, and there’s nothing stopping me but myself. If I want to improve, then I can. There’s no “I should,” or “I need to,” it’s “I want to improve, so I will.”

Be a good artist
Play the guitar
Go to the gym
Learn to dance and sing
Have good grades
Find my calling in life

I had this realization earlier this year. Life feels so much better when you simply do the things you know you need to do. When things start going your way, your self esteem improves as well.

i think the focus on "games = compulsion = bad" is way too much in this video, like, he got back to some games after having a productive day, how's that gonna hurt him? the difference is, now he's not doing that 24/7 but integrating that into a productive lifestyle and things like that are healthy asf if you mantain the balance, we all gotta have fun sometimes, there's no need to completely cut off what you enjoy just because that's "healthy for you", that's like cutting yourself off the food completely to lose weight only then to compulsively overeat bc you're really hungry, that's not gonna be nice for you too

As someone who majorly changed the trajectory of my life in my early to mid 20s: Try something new. If you do not know what brings you fulfillment, the most important part is the realisation and acceptance that you arent fulfilled where you are right now.
Have the courage to try out something new. For yourself, nobody else.
Understand what part of your mind is feeling like you're just trying to live up to others expectations.
As someone who has and still is suffering the same things, trying new things everyday and seeing what truly brings you joy from those new things can help you find what you genuinely want as a person. What type of happiness you are seeking from yourself. Try just going outside for at least 5 minutes, read one page of a book, bake something simple just for you. From that you can pick snd choose what youd want to try more often and look forward to bring happy with.
Study prophecies. Watch "Identity Crisis" by Jim Staley then go to Revelation 11 and 13. People will get even more lost in the near future.
Try looking into Islam, without any prejudices. Read the Qur‘an and learn about Islam through sources Muslims believe in, understand the fundamentals of the religion, as Islam really teaches how to live life
Try helping someone else and youll figure it out

I can't believe how I've fallen into these traps and led myself to path of self-destruction by thinking that scrolling all the time, lazing around is what I wanted. But often at the end of the day, I felt so unhappy and that there was something missing but could never figure it out.
After seeing this video, I recalled the times I worked hard, for example during finals, while keeping the phone away, I got good scores. It felt rewarding to see the scorecard.
I regret so many things for I had let myself become this doom scrolling zombie but no more now.
I want a real fulfilling life. I will identify these "compulsions" and stay far away from them. That's it.

I think the common misconception is that we're ignorant of what's good for us, but as this video has to awkwardly shift around, is everyone already knows that. We don't do the fulfilling things because life is exhausting us, we're anxious about surviving, being fired, being attacked all the time. And we have to repress our impulses to fit in, to protect the little we have. So is it any wonder when we get a break we use it to soothe? To degen. To indulge our repressed impulses?
So no, we're not just ignorant of what's good for us, it just that it takes a lot of discipline to avoid the pain relief; the bad for us things. I think we first have to accept it's not our fault, we're reacting to a hostile world. It is (however unfair) still our responsibility. But it's worth it to take your life back.
Now add addiction into the mix. I’ve unbrainwashed myself and know what the right thing to do is, but cannot escape. Everyday I fail again and again and because I have the clarity to understand what’s right and wrong, I have only the ability to sit back and watch myself destroy what’s left of my life.

As someonee who's lived what Billy is living for the past 7-8 years I can safely say living the easy life gets old eventually. Making sure your place is clean, maintaining a garden, setting up a Christmas tree in the holidays, things that I thought didn't matter when I was younger. I now realize all those things absolutely do matter to keep yourself sane and feel fulfilled.
I am Billy😢 I used to be the "golden child," the academic over achiever, I loved success and praise. Now I'm crippled by the thought of initiating many important tasks. I've made the distinction before between complusion and genuine satisfaction, but it often isnt top of mind. I relate to this very much! I’ve always been very academically inclined because it’s what I’m supposed to do. Being academically inclined has brought me great opportunities, don’t get me wrong, but it for sure didn’t allow me to discover more of myself. The fact that it’s easier for me to be doing homework all the time rather than actually doing activities that truly fulfill my creativity and passion is concerning. This is coming from someone who is studying graphic design and photography, so it’s expected for me to be naturally very creative, yet I struggle to come up with ideas for myself. My work has mostly been determined by what others expect of me, NOT what I actually want to experience. It’s quite sad, but I do want to make a change because I can’t keep on living without creativity and inspiration forever. Hope your journey to become the best version of yourself goes well! Treating my day job as the source of funding my creative pursuits. This small change in thinking was such a blessing and changed everything. Also, I’ve had to start small- as simple as taking a sketch pad everywhere and sneaking in time to sketch wherever I can. On the phone- doodling, at lunch a quick street scape, at home on the couch… I haven’t got the $$$ for all my resources/ or the space but (like you) I need to breath- making a start like this has given me hope, kept me focused and continually looking/ thinking of ways on how I can find more time, expand my resources and how I could have a studio space… I’m currently exploring expanding cupboards: they close up to look like a wardrobe but when you open them they fold out with a table, shelving and draws… God Bless, I hope this helps. :)

this came out at a great time. i've fallen into habits like overeating, a lack of exercise, and more because it feels good to relax that way in the moment, but it's almost always worse afterward. i started going on walks again a couple weeks ago and it's helped a lot along with some other stuff. i definitely need to sit down and think about the things that i enjoy doing in the moment *and* can look back on with joy and satisfaction

I'm glad I stumbled across this video, as it felt like exactly what I needed right now. One thing I already knew though is that the more struggle you go through to finish something (fulfilling) the better it will feel once it's done. Life is boring, mundane, and frankly pointless without struggle.
In school, this looks like being presented with material that is way above what you know. If you take the right steps, you learn quicker and more effectively than if the material was easier.
In work, if you're given a tight deadline on a project that's above your pay grade you will feel more accomplished once it's done than if the job was easy, because you had to fight to finish it.

Billy running off when he first heard that he can do what he wants is just like me and others who read, watch, or hear something to get what we feel are the key points without actually consuming the entire message that makes those key points make sense.
The problem with this is that we are actually so close to getting the full message at that point, and if we just spent a little more time really listening to the rest of the content, we could save so much more time in the future when trying to apply our incomplete advice to our lives.
This raises an interesting question.
The thing is that we do that in order to avoid wasting time going through the fluff in the message. In a perfect world, everything that everyone has ever said will be very important to everyone who hears it. Sadly, that is not the case. This also becomes more complicated when we realise that what one person may consider fluff (unimportant information) varies depending on their experiences and goals. Therefore, the question is *how do we get better at finding the complete information that we need quickly without having to go through all the fluff?*
The question is important because we can't simply afford to just consume everything in existence. There's only so much time that we have to live, and it's draining away with every second regardless of your station in life.
The production quality is getting significantly better through each video.

This is such a mindf*ck. Logically, the only way Joey can create a video that so perfectly captures this trap of compulsion is if he also has experience with being trapped in this dark place himself. But then, I think to myself, he has the willpower and discipline to produce, shoot, edit the video, plus lead a balanced life in between (presumably)... how is this possible?

That is something that I discovered myself a few years ago when I lost a ton of weight and stopped gaming so much.

I start asking myself the same question whenever a similar situation arises, this mindset changed my life completely and I'm so much happier and healthier.

I know this issue, I was pretty much alone and also in home office, so didn't even meet people at work.
Only thing you can do, is evaluating your position and identity options.
Go on breakes with your colleagues, call your grandma more often, spend more time with your parents. Don't let opportunities pass where you could meet new people (for example a colleague wants you to participate in something)
Do this regularly and eventually it will become a habit and people will feel more drawn to you.

People seek motivation from self help books. But for me nothing can be more inspirational than a good ficiton book. Like the one I read recently which is Voyagers of Hell. Highly recommendable.

Can’t comprehend how good this video is
This resonates so much and reminds me of when I first get into self help, consuming so much self help content: books/videos, thinking that I am improving and it can solve everything but in fact nothing has really changed. After a while, I lose interest towards those content and back to the slump. This goes to show that external things won’t take you so far unless it is intrinsically driven by our mindset and willingness to just do it. I’m still working on it everyday by taking real action and I wish everybody all the best with your journey.

It's not solely about the mindset. Understanding how our reward mechanisms can be hijacked by simple pleasure to avoid that trap is all well and good. But as you describe it leads nowhere when you can't, within a reasonable timeframe, achieve the kind of life our brains are designed for. Meaning, living as part of a community that you care for and that cares about you. Spending your working hours on something you feel makes sense. In general: finding a sense of purpose. Without that, it's always an uphill battle, that we sooner or later give up.

this video just randomly popped up on my feed and i'm glad it did, it truly felt like i was watching a movie based on my day to day life and once I realized that what you should do is really what you end up wanting to do, it just gave me even more motivation to finally quit all of these bad habits that we sometimes develop without even noticing. It was really unsettling watching him keeping the same behavior, despite all of the advice he got, especially since it felt like it was me doing it.
from this day on, I'll make my best effort in getting rid of this lifestyle and hopefully in the future I can give an update of how everything changed for the better.

@@lizard_leeaf definitely a bit better than it was before, already managed to do somethings that I was kinda procrastinating about, although obviously it hasn't passed that much time yet to notice a significant difference, but hopefully I'll keep it going and continue to improve each day. :)

most inspirational video I have ever seen, I have read books like "atomic habits" and "dopamine", I grabbed their ideas but never really want to put it into my life, thank you for your video, it really brings my desire of making self-improvement up
It doesn't take long for a pleasurable thing to become a habit. Once it does, it's helpful to practice awareness. Meditation is something that has really helped me, it clears my mind, gives razor sharp focus, gives me a taste of transcendental bliss, and afterwards I am hyper aware of every thought and feeling I experience. Don't resist the urge to indulge in a habit, for example, doom scrolling youtube shorts. Instead, notice the desire to do it, and whilst you're doing it, reflect on the experience. Think to yourself, "am I enjoying this?". Usually when I'm indulging in the internet I'm not even enjoying doing it, I'm simply doing it out of habit, and as a form of escapism. When you're watching video after video, scrolling through meme after meme, it doesn't take long to go into a "zombie state" where you're just kinda not even thinking or conscious but rather just staring at the screen, the entire experience of your being being on whatever you're focusing on. Then, when you actively reflect on what your doing, and realise that you actually AREN'T enjoying it, you won't want to do it anymore. Though I'm not much better to be honest. When I'm exhausted I easily indulge in the internet and video games and eating rubbish and not exercising, meditating, working, reading, socialising, enjoying life...

It's a dumb video that makes no sense
The videos just keep getting better and better. It’s like my life’s lessons are being expressed through video for others to see. Luckily, I already know a lot of this stuff. I’ve been there. but knowing that others may be watching this, feeling unsatisfied and unmotivated, gives me deep satisfaction because they are seeing what they need to see, just like I did. I hope they can enact the changes they need to.

I love the quality of this short movie and also the story telling, it really feels refreshing to see such a video because I can notice how much effort there was put into it
The mindset shift that had the biggest impact on my life was to understand that pleasure and happiness are NOT the same thing.
Once I was able to disentangle them, it was easy to see how I was actually spending my time chasing pleasure not happiness.

Very few people who are depressed are genetically predisposed to it. Most of the time the modern world crushes them into it.
@@duolingoowl920 Ehh. You’d be surprised, most neurodivergent people are predisposed because of chemical imbalance. But yes, for others it can be external.
The thing about mental illnesses is that they can be mitigated. It's not easy, I have ADHD and MDD, and some days are always the color beige, no matter how hard I try... but I used the resources available to me to sit down and get the bottom of those issues.
They're both chemical imbalances for me; I take meds for the MDD, and use some coping mechanisms for the ADHD. Some days it doesn't work out, I'm not as productive as I want to be, but there's always tomorrow. We can always try again.
