- Military train CSX W830-06 with KCS units was the highlight of the day on the CSX Abbeville Subdivision. Chasing this train was challenging until emergency braking brought the train to a stop on the southend of Howie Siding. The reason was an air leak. Other trains in the video are MoW train A003-08, intermodal Q194-08, and manifest Q614-07. [© 2016 MBMARS Productions. Exclusive rights for TH-cam channel "mbmars01" only.]
Great video. KCS is my favorite color on engines and rolling stock.
Thanks! I also like it. We should enjoy it as long as we can. The paint scheme is likely to change after the merger with CN.
@@mbmars01 I believe the merger will be with CP. CP is smaller. CN has a North/South route that is parallel with KCS. I saw two KCS engines working with CP units in the Twin Cities last month.
I also think the KCS/CP merger would be more logical, but CN made the higher offer and KCS has formally accepted it. Now it's up to the authorities to approve it or not.
@@mbmars01 now that the stb and doj don't like cn's deal. CP look the favourite.
Damn, somebody ordered the complete playset. What you've got right there is a truck for every occasion!
Lol
"Somebody ordered the complete playset". Best line I've heard in quite a while.
is this all u have to do all day get a life
Oh don't be butthurt, someone has to do it!
David Anderson shut up pig head.
I just had to watch this great military train video again. Thank You.
Cool. Yeah, I also have to watch some videos multiple times to capture all details. You're welcome!
Thanks for posting this! You've managed to combine two of my interests here: military equipment and trains! This is great stuff!
+ichigorobei That's awesome! I saw another KCS military train here today, so there's more stuff to come.
Absolutely premium rail fanning! I LOVE watching your work.
Only thing I could ask for is for you to leave the captions up for a bit longer, for the few of us who can't quite get it all to soak in so quickly. :-)
Thanks, man.
Thank you very much. The captions are somewhat short, but I don't like to show them longer because they cover a large part of the scene, which is particularly annoying during close-ups. I keep it in mind, but maybe just briefly pause the video for reading.
I respect your judgment. I have been, and will continue to use the pause.
Thanks again.
Thanks, Dale. I'm glad you like watching the videos :)
14:00 good sequence highlighting easily recognizable differences between two seemingly similar locomotives for those of us who have to rely on videos such as yours for exposure to the various and sundry different types of locomotive power.
Some are easier to recognize than others, but after all they look quite similar.
Really great recording with descriptive detail. Marvellous change from the static-camera-watches-passing-trains formula. Not surprised that you had trouble keeping up as the road speed limit signs for 45 mph can't have helped. Watching the cars move up and down on the track and the track move up and down under their weight suggests a freight only line. Your zoom on the camera is very persuading about the undulations of the track across the land surface. Very enjoyable and thanks . From the U.K.
Many thanks, Tom. Great you like the video style. Keep watching!
Cool video! A military train AND a MOW train. Thanks for posting!
You're welcome!
Thank You , Very entertaining and excellent shooting.
You're welcome! Good you enjoyed the video!
Those RED BLACK n YELLOW locomotives look like Fiery Darts headding for Battle. Mighty Impessive. Thanks for sharing.
Lol 😂 You’re welcome!
Well that was handy that it was right behind the engine. Again, you're in just the right spot for some terrific powering-up sound as it pulls away at 13:55. There's just about everything on that train, including some damn great artillery pieces towards the end.
Yep, but no tanks...
WHAT WOULD TANKS BE USED FOR TO LEAVE TRACKS TANK TRACKS
Because the stuff belongs to Ft Bragg, they don't have tanks.
you got to be the Damn best Train Video filmer, thank you so much man, you film everything I only imagine seeing in my head, this train I dreamed of driving when i was a child when my parents took me to see trains when i lived in Texas and this is the other train company (KCS) that operates in Mexico good job buddy!! ;-D
Cool, many thanks. I'm very happy you like these vids. I put a lot of effort into the production of the content and therefore I'm glad if some more people other than only me like 'em ;)
mbmars01 I like them also.
JAMES PURKS
Thank you!
You have the best train videos thanks for posting them keep up the good work
Thank you. Your feedback is very much appreciated. I'll try... :)
You obviously know your subject matter and your audience well. Along with good pacing, you've made a very engaging and enjoyable video
Thank you very much. I try to get it right...
Nice vid... We used to dread pulling some of the old DODX flats from post to the interchange because they often had all sorts of issues, especially the old wood-deck 60-footers. Going into emergency wasn't unusual and the old Paducah-geeps we had at the time were equally cantankerous.
Finding someone riding in one of the Humvees was always possible, especially in winter... They'd burn the little bit of fuel in each for heat, then move on to the next.
Loads were supposed to be inspected and secured but I recall a slide out generator we got back after it hit cars on an adjoining track. CSX was bad about bringing them in with bridge plates on the oldest cars hanging between cars or a handbrake set... lol
Thanks! Haha, cool, I can imagine...
Impressive stopping! Have seen them stop by us for one reason or another. It was neat you caught the air hose👍👍👍
Thanks!
Mb, May you and yours have a Golden New Year!
Thanks very much! I also wish you and your family a happy and healthy New Year!
Nice catch. Really enjoy your videos.
Great, glad you like watching them!
That train is better armed than some countries are.

Very good camera work and editing! I'm enjoying this particular chase very much! That one car that crossed right in front at Elberton, holy crap people terrify me sometimes!
Many thanks. I completely agree, it often scares me when I see people try to beat trains at crossings.
great clip! many thanks for your upload!
You're very welcome! Cool you like it!
Awesome video, thanks for sharing with us!
Many thanks and you're welcome!
Man that thing was hauling ass and to stop that fast is pretty cool
not So cool when you stop that fast and you feel the slack rollin in on you.
Flava Town Imagine getting smashed into by millions of pounds while at around 5 mph that would hurt...
that is why as one other commenter explained the braking action is rear to front to lessen that i would think
@@jays106 that would kinda depend on where the break in the train was.
But.. regardless, when your train goes into emergency you're supposed to also put the rear end into emergency too with the end of train device. Yes, It could help soften the blow of the whole thing coming in and kicking you in the ass
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the DC motors in these diesel-electric locos help with the stopping power. They are variable speed whereas an AC motor is at a constant RPM. There is no way with brakes alone that that much mass could be stopped so suddenly without the aid of the motor.
That's some heavy hauling power pulling some heavy hauling power.
Only in America! :)
Love the KC`s, great video.
Many thanks!
Hey mbmars01,
This was epic! Love this video, and the KCS power, plus the MOW. Awesome work and driving! I just caught pure CN leading K685 myself. Not so nice with the air leak; but prior, it looked like he was hauling @$$!
-Don
Thank you very much!
Another WOW! The engineer probably wasn't happy about the emergency, but I just loved getting a good look at that collection. Did someone throw a rock at that MoW?
I just wonder why they hit the brakes so often when I stand next to them lol. Why do you think someone threw a rock at the MoW train?
At 27:25 -27:31 an object hits the v-shaped blade on the piece of equipment last on the flatcar, and makes that booming sound.
Ha, I don't think anyone threw a rock, since there was no-one else. My guess is that what you saw flying was an insect, which can look big if it passes close by the lens. The booming sound was more like slack action of the couplers or a flat spot. So I would say the coincidence of both events was accidental.
great catch of those Csx trains
Many thanks!
No problem
My name is my name is Mike, I used to work for Conrail and CSX. I also work forfor the US army at the military ocean terminal in Bayonne New Jersey. As a veteran I was honored to work and pull these military trains
Very cool!
cool video!! once in a while we see a military train go through here but not very often.
+Mike Howey It was the same here, but recently they sent through some.
well at least you got to si there and admire those beautiful KCS locomotives
I salute the military and their trains
I've never seen people saluting trains.

Yep!
Awesome video! Great catch. I live a couple miles from the Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) in 29 Palms, Ca. and I see convoys of these vehicles on the highway all the time. That being said, being on that train is the fastest they have ever gone!!! Lol. Subbed!

Trains (Engines) are eerily quiet but serene when they are parked-up at their various yards when not in use, Boy! Did anyone else notice that at 8:08 the middle humvee's right rear door is hanging open?
^^^@Specter307 .. A lot of them don't have doors at all Ha!!! :P] .v (Nmcfmamf) ..
^^^@Specter307 .. I saw that, it's the job of the switcher-shunter back at the rail yard siding where this Train came from to check that all cargo is secure either he missed it or the door came loose whilst in transit but I doubt that happened here, some vids I've seen box car doors open nothing was inside of them but that's not the point, they are supposed to be checked where they came from and secured and or rectified .. .
WE WANT THEM OPEN THAT WAY WE GET ALL THOSE MRE'S AND ALL THOSE TOPO MAPS..........THEN THE MEDIC TRAINS WITH THE YELLOW GYRO LIGHTS ON TOP WE WOULD TURN THEM ALL ON SO THAT AT NIGHT ALL KNEW WE WERE THERE...........
Yup
that was an uparmored Humvee. Those things doors often pop open on their own somehow in the middle of the motorpool. So its not surprising that on pops open on a shaking train. The ones missing the doors have CLOTH doors. cheapo things that often break in a strong wind, so we are told to take them off when we put them on a train to keep them from flying off and nailing someone.
Nice video. I especially liked the lower view of the manifest train at the end..Just seeing the wheels and the bottoms of the hopper cars. Kind of a different view of a train.
Thank you! Yeah, I like to change the perspectives repeatedly.
Excellent video. . . Thanks!
Thank you for watching it :)
As I’ve never seen a freighter go into emergency braking before, I was quite impressed with how quickly it stopped!
I couldn't believe it either when I stood next to it!
@@mbmars01 What did you hear. a bunch of popping and hissing. or just a fast stop?
Well done to the train drivers , the control of the train's are awesome , one must know what you are doing on the track's .
Nice catch! Thanks.
Thanks!
Fantastic Video!
Great you enjoyed it!
So many emergency brake applications in your vids😳👍😂
I think I remember my old man mentioning... the maybe 3 times that he had to in 40 years..??
Lol, I know. There was a time, about four years ago, when I could have bet on something going wrong during my visits to the line. CSX has improved much since; there are much fewer problems (but also fewer trains to begin with...).
mbmars01
I imagine when your drawbar loads are so much higher than our 3k ton trains..😂
what a great train very fast and very long and lots of good gear on there
It was a nice catch, for sure.
Military consists have #1 priority. no stopping of slowing these guys for other freight. dispatcher must have been pissed at that leak!

awesome catches. sweet catch of the Military train with KCS locomotive's nice. cool KCS loco's an EMD SD70ACE and a GE ES44AC nice. cool 4 GE 3 ES44AH and a ES44DC nice. #6912 GP40-2 and #2300 Road Slug nice.
Thanks. Yep, the latter ones were the same as in some previous videos. I came across this MoW train four times, I think. It was always in my way somehow lol
mbmars01 your welcome sir and cool.
Great video! I seen several KCS Military Intermodal trains heading your way but yea sweet footage
Cool, thank you!
I dunno about the horn on the kcs locomotive that makes the whole thing badass
When the engine goes into emergency, the sanders kick on... that's how you can see and hear when it happens.
I'm not sure about that, they might or might not. But I do know that when the train is put in emergency, air pressure is rapidly released from the brake pipe along the length of the chain.
You got that right Benjamin. there is 90 lbs of Pressure in the air line and either when the engineer or conductor Dumps the air that is the releasing of air from the Break line and the Breaks are applying from the rear of the train forward to the Engine or engines to stop the train at a safe speed and distance.
@@Kevin-ev7hw actually never realized that and its a great way of doing that as starting at the back i would imagine almost eliminate chance of things going south in a hurry if braking were done front to rear
I actually think that's just dust and dirt being kicked up since hes cooking right along.
Cubs Fan22 naw he’s right. It’s supposed to combat wheel slip. You can hear the air dump around 4:08 and the sand kicks on at 4:10
Three great vids, Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, glad you like them!
Love the sound of the EMDs
Oh yes...
Could someone explain what the bell on the locomotives mean? I'm from UK and we've never had anything like that.
Hi UK! A bell on a train is used to alert people & traffic at intersections & other congested areas.
Thanks! Is it automatic or does someone have to remember to switch it on and off?
The engineer has to turn it on or off
Thanks! I've been wondering for years.
PS. Like your user name & avatar.
leftover traditions, just like the horn, ,many crossings are digital now and use a local speaker at full volume to simulate, cool idea, helps to free the engineer from the mundane
Great Catches . Man that car around the 17:22 Mark was cutting it close . I Didn't realize JCB Made a Backhoe for the military (Looking by the shape of the logo on the boom. I Personally like a 3 stick & 4 stick Case Backhoe .) & the D6K Cat dozer towards the back & in front of the G Series Cat motor grader needs a little bit of grease in the track , track needs adjusting . Guess I Been around Equipment & trucks too long ..lol . I Have been around it all my life & can spot the little things ..lol .
+B422TMack Cool. I see, you have an eye for details :)
great video
Thank you :)
@@mbmars01 welcome man
Being from California, I am just AMAZED at the way there are these gently sloping roads that parallel the trains for MILES in the Midwest and Southern states!
About how many miles long, do you estimate this train was?
Oh this wasn't that long, maybe 4,000 ft or 0.8 miles. Some trains here are almost 3 times as long, though.
Thanks for the video. Two questions was the military going faster than a manifest train ? Have you ever been pulled over for going to fast chasing a train? I enjoyed watching the different pieces of military vehicles this train was hauling. Thanks for the close up shots of the engines you could feel the power these engines put out. Thanks for your work I appreciate it. Take care
It was certainly a rather light train. This means it accelerates faster after a slow period than a heavy manifest, which takes its time to gain speed. The track speeds for trains in this section are 30-50mph, for cars on the highway 35-55mph. So, one can overtake the train without speeding, but it takes time if the train goes at track speed. To answer your second question: No, because I don't stress the speed limits.
We have trains like that coming thru often. Usually headed to White Sands for war games for 4 weeks or so, then haul then back to home base.
That's very cool.
Amazing the way the military equipment is loaded and unloaded!
bobaroo58 more like scary...I did this in the army and when you drive one of these things up a ramp and down a line of rail cars to its spot you have to drive over ramps between those cars takes lots of trust in the guys and gals you work with because a small mistake or miscalculation on the part of the driver or the main hand signal person can cause a huge problem...in training I had to back an old duce and a half off two cars because we didn't get a turn around it was the most stressed I was during the whole event but I was one of the more capable people and instructors always put me up first or on the hardest technical things...88H coolest job I ever did
Hey MBMars, Great video, impressive train! Is this the hardware the US government was going to use to stage a military take-over of Texas?
Question: Do military trucks have ignition keys, or do you just jump in and hit a start button?
I would not want to be caught shadowing a military transport. Sounds like a good way to schedule quality time with a bunch of pissed-off federalies.
Thanks! Haha, that's funny. I had to laugh about your comment lol
Unless it's an "off the shelf" commercial vehicle like an M880 (Dodge pickup) or Chevy Suburban, no they don't.
They probably use a code, and have a keypad.
@@claycollins2862 no just a padlock around the wheel and brake
In the "Olden Days" our equipment (Deuce and a Half's and Jeeps) we used chains and locks. You could start them, but...
Quality filming, enjoyed in UK,by DC
Thank you! I'm happy there are so many people from the UK who like to watch these videos!
We used to get quite a few battle-damaged M1-Abrams coming from one of the eastern US ports headed to the Anniston (Al) Army Depot for repairs. These were kept more "under wraps" than your regular military train. They were shipped on a normal shitter train with no more than one or two cars. The tanks would often be covered up.
Wow, interesting. I never thought about it but sure they would transport the damaged equipment by rail as well.
I live not too far off the KCS Heavener Subdivision. It stretches from Pittsburg Kansas to Heavener Oklahoma. (It becomes the Pittsburg Subdivision north of Pittsburg Kansas, and the Shreveport Subdivision south of Heavener Oklahoma.
great video! greetings from italy
Cool, thanks. Greetings back to Italy - I enjoyed all my many travels to Bella Italia!
Railfan newbie here. I was under the impression that the forward facing Loco in an MU was pulling the train, but at the 14:20 mark or so, as they train starts moving again, the engine exhaust was coming from the 2nd engine #4692 which was operating in reverse. Was I mistaken in my thinking?
The first loco is typically the lead loco, which controls the other engines in the train. In most cases all of them run and contribute power. That's the main purpose of a multi-unit consist. However, it also happens that engines are just transferred from one location to another, in which case these units are typically unpowered. If you see a train with 6 or more modern engines, it's most likely that not all of them are "online".
Great video thanks
Awesome, thank you!
I LOVE Your videos
I'm glad you do :)
Don't know if anyone has answered this, but what was the CSX equipment on those flatbed cars at 27:30? was it track laying equipment?
what is the max speed of this trian??? and you were very lucky to film the leak of air!!!!
The average track speed is about 45mph on this line.

Ha, very cool. Maybe they knew you watched a video on this channel :)
You're the best!
Thank you, but I guess that's debatable lol :) At least I try the best I can to produce some reasonable content that people like to watch.
Have you noticed how much quieter the KCS rail lines are (not much "clackety-clack")? that's because they replaced the standard rail section with longer, "seamless" rails that were welded together and ground smooth. Most of the noise you DO hear is from flat spots on wheels.
Well, this video was filmed on the CSX Abbeville Sub.
@@mbmars01 I lived in K.C. until 1989. A friend lived right next to the KCS tracks where we could see them upgrading the tracks. No telling how far it went. But that's the first video I've seen, that had the KCS train running on it with the "seamless" rails. Less noise, less wear, smoother ride, less maintenance (on the track and the trains), more efficient.
4th time this year you stand next to a train in emergency? You're not jinxing them are you? You make great videos by the way.
This was last year and overall it was finally 6 times I think. I'm not jinxing them - emergencies like this just happen on a daily basis here. Thank you, glad you like 'em.
mbmars01 I know. I was joking about jinxing them. Keep up the good work recording.
Oh, Noooooo, MB didn't jinx them, but by a strange coincidence, he has been banned from comming closer than 25 miles from CSX tracks, I think they tried to get a restraining order, but the Judge didn't buy their story. Now that its been 2 years, I hope the bad luck mojo has worn off. Be safe out there MB. ;-)
It's always funny reading comments from people who have absolutely no idea
what they're talking about.
The funniest part is remembering back when you yourself were just as naive. XP
Benjamin Esposti I was never this bad.
I just scroll and try to make sense of it all...
Wait what
Some beautiful sounding horns on these trains, esp the last one, #6912.
I wonder what makes the freight car wheels hum. Must be the bearings.
I think it's a resonance of the track that makes this sound. One can sometimes already hear it long before the train is close.
4th time i have seen 590 (3 times on your channel and once in Marshville NC)
Lol, I know. This happens.
What was the time between stop initiated and it coming to a stop? Seemed quick! Mine sweeper MRAP @ 8:05
Maybe 30 seconds or so. It was very quick.
great compilation , question can you make a vid from inside an moving train ?
Thanks! I'm not working for a railroad and cannot make a video from the inside.
@@mbmars01 still you make great vids thank you
for doing that
Cool, appreciate that!
Interesting.
Did you clock how fast he was going or how long he was?
That white car barely beats the train through the crossing at about 17:30!
I didn't, but he was certainly running at track speed, which is about 40 mph in this section.
The dust being kicked up is from the traction motor blowers. Odds are they had a "kicker" in the train. Sometimes the brake valve on a car will dump the air thinking the train is in emergency rather than doing a controlled reduction of the air for the brakes.
what is the weight rating on the triple axle bogies compared to the twin axle
wow, very Nice video ! There must be a couples millions dollars on that train !!!!!
Thank you!
What type of locomotives are these as I would like to read about them (I am speaking of the units that pull the train) I see the rail line is KSC. Perhaps this info is provided but I do not know how to interpret it.
The engines of the military train are a SD70ACe by Electromotive Division (EMD) leading and ES44AC by General Electric (GE) trailing. The line is actually the CSX Abbeville Subdivision, but the military train came from KCS's network, which is why they kept the engines.
Thanks, what interests me is the fact it seems that these are the only two engines and that looks like a long heavy train, going fast. Am I going to find out these are especially powerful engines? It would not at all be surprising.
Absolutely, times are changing. Only two modern engines can nowadays do what in earlier times 4 or 5 units were needed for. These locomotives have about 4,000 hp each. The military train is light-weight anyway.
These trains aren't typically that heavy. If I remember correctly less than 7,000 tons
fstop61 lol no if it's has M1A2 abrams 60 tons it gets extremely heavy
Nice on the military train and MoW equipment train.
Interesting video
Thanks!
mbmars01 Your welcome. Truly some old school type stuff that the modem americans forgot is a vital part of our nation. You dont see this in the inner cities.
That's right. I know many young people who claim they have never seen a train...
Daaannnngggg that thing stopped quick. I didn’t know trains could stop that fast even with emergency.
That's actually a light load for a train. 🤣
One question, If the train went onto emergency. All of the brakes on every car engages. How are they able to move? If they corrected the problem. Wouldn't the train go back into high speed and continue prioity?
that was a quick stop. it is going up hill though so that helped. going to be a pain to get it going again up that hill
The train was definitely rolling, they probably don't want the military equipment to be exposed, trying to get it from A to B quickly. Also, it looks like National Guard equipment
Nah, its the 82nd's sustainment brigade on the way back home from a JRTC rotation in Ft Polk
I'm not sure, but, military trains probably have priority over everything else. Sort of a wartime thing.
bitsnpieces11
Yeah, with WWIII coming soon and all that ... XD
They would keep them moving...didn't want to stop them outside of a yard for too long. Too many vandals and thieves
Ya, those howitzers tell me that this is the military not the National Guard.
Fabulous!
Good you like it!
Interesting side story involving a military train. We were pulling one southbound between Atlanta and Macon. Around 10 am we were passing a u-pick peach grove. I noticed 3-little boys (ages 4-7 +/- ) were lined up on a small bluff to watch us pass. I believe they spotted the tanks and other army equipment prior to our arrival. Since they were on my side of the train, I decided to open up the cab window and give them a friendly wave. All three of them flipped me off. True story
Haha, that's a funny story. Thanks for sharing. Typically, kids and railfans are very thankful for any wave or positive response by the train crews.
I was crestfallen, I hope they enjoyed the military train....maybe it was the UP motive power?
I can imagine... Well, that's a weird experience that I also made. There are apparently people (kids?) who are fanatic about a certain RR, but hate the others. I personally enjoy to see all colors I can get :)
The last part was a joke.....
I agree, whenever we had foreign power the railfans must've beat the drums; as they'd follow us from Atlanta to Macon or vice versa
470 comments. Too many to search for answers but that lineup of vehicles certainly opens up a lot of questions in my mind as to what they all do. Quite the line up.
15:56 certainly comes to mind.
A gr8 way to move a complete Unit
I agree! Imagine all this stuff would have been transported on the highway.
Man!! That's a huge freight train!! How many miles long!?
Trains can be 3 or more miles long here.
Beautiful train
Yep, it was a good one.
Don't see many GP30's anymore; I wonder if it's a slug for unit 6912?
